Suspect sentenced
for armed robbery
THE King Williams Town
Regional Court convicted and
sentenced Themba Mali for
committing an armed robbery
in West Bank, King Williams
Town in 2010.
The suspect was arrested
following the incident and a
firearm recovered.
The conviction and sentence
follows an investigation by
King Williams Town Detectives
who worked tirelessly in
investigating the case.
After his arrest Mali appeared
several times in court.
He was found guilty of robbing
the victim of cash, cellphone
and cigarettes from his shop.
The suspect was arrested on
11 September 2010 and an
unlicensed firearm with 7
rounds of ammunition was
found in his possession after
police and traffic services
spotted him and gave chase.
He first appeared at the King
Williams Town Magistrate
Court on September 14, 2010
for robbery and the illegal
possession of an unlicensed
firearm and ammunition.
Bail was denied and Mali was
remanded in custody. On
October 30, 2010 he was
granted bail and released on
warning.
He appeared again in the
regional court on November
12, 2010 and was convicted
on August, 22 2016.
On 23 August 2016 he was
convicted to ten years (10)
imprisonment for armed Robbery,
and ten years (10) for
the possession of unlicensed
firearm and ammunition.
The court declared him unfit
to possess a firearm in terms
of Section 103 of the
Firearms Control Act, 2000
(Act No. 60 of 2000).
The Station Commander of
King Williams Town, Colonel
Andile Lamana has welcome
the
sentence
and commended a sterling
job by the investigating team.
He said that the sentences
will definitely send out the
message that the law will
deal harshly with
perpetrators of crime.
*During the past weekend
police conducted routine
patrols in the Central Business
area of the King
William’s Town policing area.
“Police did foot patrols doing
stop and search in the areas
and they managed to arrest
thirty eight (38) suspects
aged between 20 and 49
years for crimes ranging from
drunkenness, possession of
stolen property, common
robbery, theft, common assault
and housebreaking and
theft,' said police spokesperson
Captain Siphokazi Mawisa.
'While police were busy with
stop and search operations
they managed to arrest
suspects with dagga in their
possession.
'Two suspects were also
arrested for drunken driving
with the assistance of the
traffic services,' said Mawisa.
The suspects were due to
appear at the King William’s
Town Magistrate earlier this
week.
St Thomas Private School
Bids ‘Adieu’ to Matriculants
“Bliss was it in that dusk to be alive, But to be young was sheer heaven!”
From Left:- Mr Mbane (Guest speaker), Mrs Makuzeni (Deputy Principal),
Mr Mtyida (Guest Speaker) and Mr Rajah (Principal), during the
presentation of tokens of appreciation at the Matric Farewell.
These words by the
renowned English Poet,
William Wordsworth, at the
time of the French Revolution,
reflects succinctly the
feelings and emotions of the
St Thomas Private School
Matriculants at the Farewell
Function held in their honour.
Yet, like the French citizens
during the time of liberation
from the imperial yoke, the
War Memorial Hall was
pervaded by feelings of
exuberation about their
imminent departure from the
bondage of school life.
However, their emotions
were tempered by the
trepidation and concern
about their future prospects.
The parents, also, who were
cordially invited to this
banquet, shared in this
euphoria of the matrics, and
were hopeful of their
children’s success in the
impending exams.
This event was a
collaborative effort of the
Grade 11 learners and
educators- Ms Mabindisa,
Mrs Myburg, Mrs Karshagin,
Ms Matroos, Mrs Delport.
They left no stone unturned
to make this farewell
prestigious and memorable
for the matriculants. The
décor, reminiscent of a
Masquerade Ball, brought a
feeling of Deja’ Vu- aligned
with last year’s (2015)
French theme!
The tantalising and titillating
aroma of the night’s cuisine
provided a conducive
atmosphere for the two
highly influential and
inspirational guest speakers,
Mr M. Mbane [EDO-DOE]
and Mr J.Z.M. Mtyida [Acting
Chief Director: Education-
Social Support Services].
The motivational speakers
emphasised the need for
greater and sustainable effort
if success is to be attained.
Both concurred that: “We are
unable to choose and
change our backgrounds,
but we are able to choose
and change our future.”
To add to the ambience of the
evening, the harmonious
musical group, aptly called
‘Harmony’, had the audience
asking for more!
It was indeed a marvellous
and entertaining evening.
