Boutique<br />
A small, privately-owned store that sells high-end<br />
merchandise.<br />
Convenience stores A small store that sells a variety of packaged foods<br />
and household items. Convenience stores are usually<br />
located in central areas of town and have longer<br />
opening hours than grocery stores.<br />
Department store A large business in a mall with many different<br />
departments ranging from clothes to housewares.<br />
Discount stores These shops sell items at reduced prices.<br />
Ethnic stores Shops that sell ethnic or cultural goods, which are not<br />
found in mainstream shops or supermarkets.<br />
Farmers’ market A bustling place where you can buy fresh fruits,<br />
vegetables and dairy products directly from local<br />
farmers. St. Jacobs Market, located in St. Jacobs, is<br />
Canada’s largest year-round farmers’ market and<br />
accessible with your GRT bus pass. The Kitchener<br />
Farmers’ Market is another point of interest.<br />
Flea market<br />
A market where you can buy new and second-hand<br />
goods (often located outdoors).<br />

Kiosk<br />
A small, mobile shop, often located in the middle of<br />
pedestrian areas in large malls.<br />
LCBO/Liquor store A store or shop that sells alcoholic drinks (see page 32).<br />
Mall<br />
A large building that contains 50-100 different stores,<br />
restaurants and sometimes even a movie theatre — all<br />
under one roof.<br />
Plaza or strip mall A mini-mall where all the stores are arranged in a row<br />
and are not necessarily under one roof.<br />
Pub or bar<br />
A place where people go to drink alcoholic drinks.<br />
Some pubs and bars offer food and dancing as well.<br />
Salon<br />
A place that offers hairdressing for men and women,<br />
manicures and other beauty treatments.<br />
Second-hand stores Stores that sell used goods, from clothing and books to<br />
appliances and home decor.<br />
Student discounts<br />
As a student you may be eligible for a number of discounts from local stores.<br />
Watch for student specials, especially around the beginning and the end of term.<br />
Some grocery stores offer a student discount once a week.<br />
International Student Identity Card<br />
You may be eligible for additional discounts if you have the International<br />
Student Identity Card (ISIC). The card entitles you to discounts on museum<br />
