Selga Mence

Selga Mence è una compositrice che ha
acquisito una significativa importanza
sia nel panorama della musica corale
lettone sia a livello internazionale per
le sue composizioni da camera vocali e
strumentali. Diplomata in composizione
al Latvian State Conservatory, dal 1985
è lettrice alla Latvian Academy of Music,
dove attualmente insegna e dove dirige il
Dipartimento di Composizione.
La musica di Selga Mence è stata eseguita dal
Coro della Radio della Lettonia (Latvian Radio
Choir), dallo State Choir Latvija, ai Latvian
National Song Festivals nonché in occasione
di numerosi festival internazionali, dove
molti cori esecutori dei suoi brani hanno
anche ottenuto premi e riconoscimenti. Le
sue vibranti emozioni, le gioiose immagini
musicali, l’amore e il rispetto per la
musica popolare, per le tradizioni e per la
cultura del suo Paese trovano la migliore
espressione nelle sue composizioni corali.
Le melodie popolari lettoni e i testi (spesso
annullando il confine tra arrangiamento
di canto popolare e musica originale)
sono collegate alle tradizione romantica
locale ma sviluppate attraverso tecniche
compositive contemporanee. Le opere di
Selga Mence sperimentano sonorità e giochi
d’improvvisazione tecnici caratteristici della
musica aleatorica.
Selga Mence – a composer, who has
gradually taken her place as one of Latvia’s
significant composers of choral music, as
well as vocal and instrumental chamber
works. She studied composition at Latvian
State Conservatory. Since 1985 she has been
working as a lecturer at the Latvian Academy
of Music and is currently a professor and
head of the Composition Department.
Mence’s choral music has been performed by
the The Latvian Radio Choir, the State Choir
Latvija, at Latvian National Song Festivals
as well as various festivals outside Latvia.
Many choirs performing her works won at
victory titles in international competitions.
Selga Mence’s vivid emotions, lively musical
images, admiration for Latvian folk songs
and their traditional and firm ethos find
their expression in choir songs. Popular
Latvian folk melodies and texts (often
blurring the boundaries between folksong
arrangements and original music) are
related to the national romantic tradition
but are developed through contemporary
compositional techniques. The compositions
of Selga Mence explore sonorities and
improvisation games characteristic to the
aleatoric technique. Melodic material as one
the most important facets of her music is
purposefully and logically developed to set
the work alight.
