Money and Medicine at the Grosvenor 

You can catch two exciting new 

exhibitions at Chester’s Grosvenor 

Museum this month. 

First up is In Good Humour: Disease, Doctors 

and Dying in the Roman World, which 

explores the fascinating and 

occasionally gruesome world of 

Roman medicine. You can 

explore objects from right 

across the Roman empire, 

including many on loan from 

national museum collections. 

Get hands-on with interactive 

exhibits and find out all about health, 

medicine and surgery — Roman style! The 

exhibition also showcases some high tech 

analysis of 2000-year-old skeletal remains. 

The second collection is all about the 

money. Minted: Making Money and Meaning 

Stars at The Brindley 

shines a spotlight on the museum’s 

important coin collection, with Roman, 

Anglo-Saxon, Medieval and modern 

examples on display. Discover how coins 

have been made and spent throughout 

history, as well as how monarchs 

have used money to establish 

power. Minted will also include 

remarkable photographs from 

local artist Kat Hannon. 

In Good Humour runs until 6th 

November, and Minted until 23rd 

October. Entry to the Grosvenor 

Museum is free.

Runcorn’s The Brindley theatre has a stellar line-up this Autumn. 

Recently awarded a prestigious TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, the venue is 

keeping up its eclectic programme, including none other than Spandau Ballet and 

Eastenders star Martin Kemp, whose show, An Audience with Martin Kemp, is on 

Tuesday 22nd November. 

There are two great comedy plays to enjoy, like Desperate Scousewives on 4th & 5th 

October, which follows four ordinary women in the run-up to a wedding. Following 

that is riotously funny Halloween play, Seriously Dead. 

There are more laughs to be had at Manford’s Comedy Club, with acts hand picked 

by TV favourite Jason Manford. This Autumn’s stand-up stars include Lee Hurst and 

Phoenix Nights’ co-creator Dave Spikey. 

For something a bit different, the Ladyboys of Bangkok touchdown for a show on 

13th October and the creepy Circus of Horrors shows on 23rd November.

Make a date in Cheshire 

There’s fun to be had throughout September and October in 

Cheshire. With events, festivals and attractions all over the 

county, there are unmissable days out right on your doorstep. 

Don’t miss these highlights: 

The Nantwich Food Festival takes over Nantwich’s historic town 

centre from 2nd – 4th September, with tons of local and national 

producers and artisans mingling with the town’s independent 

shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. 

There’s still a chance to catch some giant jurassic creatures at 

Chester Zoo’s Dinosaurs: The Next Adventure, but you’d better 

hurry before they disappear on 4th September. It’s the zoo’s 

largest and most fearsome collection yet, with a terrifying lifesize 

Giganotosaurus and a very ill-mannered Baryonyx. 

The country’s biggest cycling event comes to Cheshire, as the 

Tour of Britain winds its way from Congleton to Tatton Park on 

6th September. 

For a more leisurely pursuit, Tatton Park’s Outdoor Cinema is 

screening three silver-screen classics, Top Gun, Dirty Dancing and 

the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, from 9th – 11th

Also at Tatton Park, the Cheshire Decorative Antiques and Art Fair 

returns from the 16th – 17th September, bringing together a huge 

array of antiques and artworks, including many truly rare pieces. 

Pull on your running shoes for the MBNA Chester Marathon on

Racecourse, the route takes in all the 

city’s iconic landmarks and the picturesque 

surrounding countryside. 

For those who prefer a little more horsepower, the Dayinsure 

Wales Rally GB roars into action from 27th – 30th October. The 

penultimate round of the World Rally Championship features 

stages in North Wales and a fun family event at Cholmondeley 

Castle. 

Treat your tastebuds with The Food and Gift Fair, Tatton Park 

from 29th & 30th October, with mini shops chock full of 

specialist traders from all over the north west, 

with everything from chocolates and 

cheese to original art and fashion. 

Finally, those with a strong 

constitution can embark on a special 

Halloween Ghost Tour of Chester on 

31st October. Your ghoulish guide will 

take you on a nighttime journey through 

the city’s gruesome past, and some of its 

most haunted spots.

Chester Pride 

Chester Pride returns the the city on 

Saturday 1st October. The day brings 

together live music, a funfair, kids’ 

activities and a parade to celebrate 

equality, diversity and support for the 

local LGBT community. 

The annual Chester Pride parade kicks 

off at Castle Square at 12 noon, lapping 

the city with colourful costumes, dance, 

models and music. Back at Castle 

Square, live music takes over three 

stages — The Main Stage, the Glitter 

Lounge and the Drum With Our Hands 

Original Music Tent — with local and 

national acts, and some well known 

names. 

The Pride fairground returns with loads 

of old-school carnival fun, while there 

are games and activities for kids in the 

youth zone. The marketplace will be well 

stocked with great local food producers 

and popup gift shops. 

The Health, Life and Wellbeing Zone will 

be back at the event giving free 

confidential advice and information. 

This year’s event is focused on raising 

awareness of the mental health issues 

that face the LGBT community.

BBC Proms in Colwyn Bay 

The BBC National Orchestra and the 

Chorus of Wales welcome some very 

special guests to Parc Eirias for the BBC 

Proms in the Park 2016. The event, on 

Saturday 10th September, marks the 

proms’ first visit to North Wales and will 

be broadcast by the BBC. 

Performers include Tony Hadley of 

Spandau Ballet, accompanied by a full 

orchestra. Grammy-winning 

singer/songwriter Amy Wadge (who cowrote 

Ed Sheeran’s smash Thinking Out 

Loud) will take to the stage, as well as 

Wynne Evans, equally well-known for his 

BBC Radio Wales show and his operatic 

performances in a certain insurance 

comparison TV advert. 

The evening will include a unique digital 

performance, in conjunction with other 

Last Night of the Proms events around 

the UK.

Celebrate history in Middlewich 

This month there are two great events celebrating the history of 

Middlewich in Chester. 

On the 10th – 11th September, the town will be taking part in the 

national Heritage Open Days. Learn more about Middlewich’s historical 

salt industry, which stretches back to its Iron Age settlers. Explore its 

historic brine pumps site, which is about to be restored into a visitor 

resource. Learn more about the Murgatroyd salt company through 

exhibitions and guided tours. 

On 24th September the town relives its Norman past as it journeys to the 

era of the Venables. Expect living history displays and re-enactments, 

hands-on activities, displays and tours of the grand Norman church of St. 

Michael and All Angels, where you can see the restoration work being 

carried out on the Venables Screens. 

Also on 24th September is the popular Middlewich Makers’ Market.

Kelsall Hill 

All the fun of 

the fair 

On Sunday 4th September, Clonter 

Opera sees the return of the Clonter 

Fair, raising money for Cancer Research 

UK and the Clonter Farm Music Trust. 

The fair will feature loads of unique gifts 

for the discerning shopper, with handmade 

crafts and vintage items. Plus 

there’ll be plenty of old-fashioned 

fairground fun, like plate smashing, a 

coconut shy, fortune teller and more. 

Running alongside the fair is the muchloved 

Clonter Car Boot Sale, a perfect 

place to grab an unusual find — or to 

clear out your pre-loved paraphernalia. 

There’ll be live music throughout the 

day, from opera to folk and rock, and 

guided tours of the theatre available too.

The second British Eventing Horse 

Trials of the year will return to Kelsall 

Hill from the 23rd – 25th September, 

combined with a fun new Pets on the Hill event. 

Come and see the horses put through their paces and the riders show their 

skill and control in dressage, show jumping and cross country. The 

equestrian event caters for rider combinations from grass roots level to 

Intermediate, with some world class rider combos competing on the cross 

country. 

The cross country course, designed by Captain Mark Phillips and built by 

Olympic course builder David Evans, takes in the fabulous Cheshire 

countryside. Photographers are always guaranteed some great action to 

capture at the water complex and ski jump. 

Pets on the Hill, on Sunday 25th, is a new addition to the event, run by the 

Willows Veterinary Group. Visitors can enjoy a fun dog show, ferret racing, 

canine fashion show, training displays and an exotic pets tent with some 

very friendly tarantulas and snakes. There’ll also be lots of pet-related stalls 

to browse. 

As well as the usual equestrian trade stands, there’ll be plenty of food stalls 

for everything from burgers to Thai noodles. Or you could pack a picnic and 

enjoy a great day out in the country.

Opera Grill 

The curtains are about to open on a brand new Chester restaurant. 

Opera Grill, part of the new Pepper Street Dining District, is ‘an internationally 

inspired grill using outstanding ingredients.’ 

Opera is set in a spectacular listed building, originally a Methodist church then a site 

manufacturing Spitfire wings during WWII. Following a painstaking £3m restoration

The Tatton Park Antiques, Decorative 

and Art Fair is a three day antiques 

spectacular from 16th - 18th September, 

filling its stately setting with antiques 

and decorative pieces to browse and buy.

the Midlands and North of England,

Conwy Feast 

Gwledd Conwy Feast is a celebration of 

food, music and art, coming to the 

riverside town of Conwy, North Wales 

from the 21st – 23rd October. 

Now in its thirteenth year, the festival 

expects to attract over 20,000 visitors. 

Brand new for 2016 is a pop-up surf and 

turf restaurant, dishing up local lamb 

with Conwy mussels and Great Orme 

lobster. 

The Mermaid bar will be serving local 

beers, plus Champagne, wine and 

Prosecco. The nearby music marquee 

will host two days and nights of music 

from some of North Wales’ finest. 

Conwy Feast is also home to the biggest 

craft event in North Wales. This year local 

makers will be collaborating to bring 

some truly imaginative pieces. You can 

also get stuck in at crafts like papercutting, 

pottery and textiles at a 

workshop. 

Festival-goers can get into the kitchen 

and rattle the festival’s pots and pans at 

the Kitchen Academy. Host and TV chef 

Melvyn Thomas will lead you through 

some quick and easy new recipes. You 

don’t even have to wash up afterwards!

Antiques at Arley Hall 

The bi-annual Antiques and Fine Art Fair is back at Arley Hall from 2nd – 4th 

September, with all manner of decorative antiques and original artworks to 

delight collectors, aficionados and window shoppers. 

The period grandeur of Arley Hall near Northwich provides the ideal setting for a 

day spent browsing pieces which span five centuries. There’ll be antiques, vintage 

wares, decorative items, and fine art on show, all from 30 trusted suppliers from
