Discover Chester & Cheshire
Chester has been welcoming visitors since the Roman Empire built the
Fortress of Deva here 2000 years ago.
The ancient city is truly a breath-taking
experience. Your group will follow where
Roman Legionaries marched to war, Viking
raiders wreaked havoc, a civil war siege took
place and Norman invaders conquered
Anglo-Saxons. Each chapter of history is
etched into the very fabric of the city.
The magnificent Chester Cathedral, located
in the heart of the city centre, was founded
as a Benedictine abbey in 1092 and has a
rich and varied history.
Places to Visit and Things to
Do in Chester & Cheshire
Shopping
Chester has been a major retail centre since
the Middle Ages and sees national chains rub
shoulders with specialist shops. It has the
oldest shop front in England and the
inimitable Rows are over 700 years old and
give you a unique shopping experience. A visit
to Chester during November and December is
a must with the return of the Chester
Christmas Market, where shoppers can
wander around the 70 wooden chalets selling
quality local merchandise and refreshments.
Just outside Chester shoppers will find
discounts galore at McArthur Glen’s
Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet.
Conveniently located at junction 10, off the
M53, this is the UK’s largest designer outlet,
with over 145 stores selling designer brands
at up to 60% less.
Stately Homes & Gardens
Cheshire is home to magnificent stately
homes and a variety of glorious gardens. The
impressive double Herbaceous Border at
Arley Hall & Gardens is probably the first of
its kind in England, whilst the Hall is an
impressive example of a country house built
in the Elizabethan style.
Tatton Park is a Georgian estate sitting
within 1,000 acres of parkland and includes
mansion, garden, farm, old hall, shops and
“Gardener’s Cottage Tearoom” offering
visitors delicious home-made refreshments.
It is host to the RHS Flower Show each July,
which is a must-visit event for all keen
gardeners and garden enthusiasts.
Norton Priory Museum & Gardens is a
fascinating combination of historical,
archaeological and natural beauty. There is a
large Georgian walled garden, woodland
walks, pear orchard, and is home to the
National Collection of Tree Quince. Visitors
can also explore the medieval ruins and
discover 900 years of history in the brand
new museum which opened in August 2016.
Ness Botanic Gardens has stunning views
across the River Dee to North Wales. These
award-winning botanic gardens contain
superb collections for genuine all year round
interest. Onsite there is a well-stocked gift
shop plant sales area where people can buy
interesting plants as well as some grown in
the garden plus a super Garden Kitchen Café
that can cater for group visits. The gardens
run regular events throughout the year.

Iconic Attractions
The area is rich in iconic attractions. Chester
Zoo is an award-winning Zoo and is the most
visited paid-attraction, outside of London in
the UK. Here groups can discover over 20,000
wonderful animals and 500 different species
including some of the most endangered and
exotic in the world.
Islands, is the largest zoo development ever
seen in the UK. It recreates the amazing
tropical environments of six South East Asian
islands, and makes them yours to explore.
Islands is based on real places and includes
the Lazy River Boat Trip – giving you a
different view of each individual island.
Industrial Heritage
Industrial heritage offers great opportunities
for visits, including the Lion Salt Works, near
Northwich, which re-opened its doors to the
public at the beginning of June 2015
following a major restoration. It is a
fascinating journey through the life of the
country's last open-pan salt making site. Why
not combine a visit to nearby Anderton Boat

Discover Chester & Cheshire
Getting Here
Lift, the world’s first, was built in 1875 to lift
cargo boats the 50 feet from the River Weaver
to the Trent & Mersey Canal. The lift was fully
restored in 2002 and today visitors to the site
can enjoy a boat-trip through the lift and
along the River Weaver Navigation.
Meanwhile, at Weaver Hall Museum and
Workhouse in Northwich, stories are told
about local industry, market towns, transport,
archaeology, and the building’s former history.
The National Waterways Museum, with its
dramatic location on the banks of the Mersey
and the Manchester Ship Canal in Cheshire, is
home to extensive in-door displays, boat trips
and historic buildings. The museum offers a
great day out where time slows down and
history comes to life.
Just 10 minutes’ drive away is Port Sunlight
Village with a museum, gift shop, tearoom,
tours, trails & holiday cottages. Port Sunlight
Village Trust manages this impressive
destination built in 1888 by William Hesketh
Lever, creator of Sunlight Soap.

Exploring Chester & Cheshire
There are plenty of ways to explore Chester &
Cheshire. ChesterBoat offer relaxing daily
cruises along the River Dee and The Mill Hotel

accessible by road, rail and air.
The M6 motorway runs directly

just over 2 hours, whilst overseas
travellers can board direct flights
to Manchester and Liverpool,
both within a short journey from
Cheshire.
There is a new direct train
service operating to and from
Manchester Airport from
Chester.

Coach Parking
All coach parking in Chester is now
centralised at the Little Roodee Coach/Car
Park located next to the Grosvenor Bridge,
Chester Castle and the River Dee. There are
fully accessible toilets on site.
It’s a short walk from here to the city centre
but there are convenient drop-off points
located across Chester.
It is open daily all year round apart from
when the Fun Fair takes place there in the
first part of May – during this period coaches
can park free at the Wrexham Road Park and
Ride site on the A483.
