One of the functions of the Authority is to manage the South African Ship Registry as well as promote the Register with a view to
attracting investors to register their ships under the South African Flag. We anticipate that the promulgation of Maritime Transport
Policy and the Tonnage Tax Policy will provide the basis for the revamping of the Ship Registry to generate revenue for the country and
also provide employment for South African Seafarers.
At the close of the financial year 2015-16 1 455 ships with a gross tonnage of 434 428.93 tons were registered under the South African
flag.
The table below reflects the number of ships and tonnage registered over the years in their various categories.
