Annual Review
2015/16

Clive Sykes
Welcome from our new
Chairman
Welcome to our Annual Review
I took over the Chairmanship of Marketing Cheshire last October. My career has been in tourism and my family
is now settled in Chester, so I hope I have the right credentials for the job. I’m hugely enthusiastic about this
area - there is enormous potential in Cheshire to develop our offer and welcome even more visitors.
Over the past few years Marketing Cheshire has had to become a more commercially astute agency to survive in
a world where public subsidies are drying up. I am now encouraging them to use their knowledge and
relationships to broker more win/win collaborations that help partners grow their business and Marketing
Cheshire earn more revenues that it can use towards promoting Cheshire. So if you have beds to fill, tickets to
sell or experiences to offer, please talk to us.
Our partners have been especially generous and creative this year and I want to thank in particular:
I hope that over the next few months I will be able to meet as many of you as possible and that you will continue
to work with the team and me to promote Cheshire in every way we can.
With all good wishes,
An update from
our Chief Executive...
The big news this year has been the
Northern Tourism Growth Fund - £10m in
one year to pump prime the rebalancing
of England’s Visitor Economy. We saw a
number of benefits: above the line
promotion, increased visits by journalists,
reduced prices for partners at key events
and conventions. We were proud to
organise three trade events, all of which
exceeded their KPIs. Our ‘Best of the North’
event was the first large trade event for
buyers featuring exclusively northern
product. And now, after several years of a
barren funding horizon, there are glimpses
of light on the horizon with opportunities
to bid which we intend to grasp with both
hands.
Once again our partners hit the high notes.
Chester Zoo on television with charming
and heart-warming “The Secret Life of the
Zoo” and still the no. 1 paid for attraction
outside London. Crewe Hall voted “Best
Business Hotel” at the Visit England Awards
and Edgar House rated “Best Small Hotel in
the World” by TripAdvisor. Chester Cathedral
winning “Best Large Attraction” at our
Tourism Awards after a couple of years of
sustained innovation and persistence, and
Jodrell Bank planning to open an amazing
state-of-the-art visitor centre so that we can
all understand more about the universe we
inhabit.
Our partnership with the Cheshire and
Warrington Local Enterprise Board has
meant we have been able to help them
engage with a wide range of stakeholders
and work across Cheshire with a number of
regeneration boards, all of whom are trying
to grow the distinctiveness of their patch.
Last, but certainly not least, we were sad to
say goodbye to Edward Pysden and
delighted to welcome as our new Chair Clive
Sykes, who has quickly rolled up his sleeves
and got stuck in.
I hope you enjoy our Annual Review.
2015 Highlights
Northern Tourism
Growth Fund
Marketing Cheshire was tasked with organising three events for UK based, inbound
operators who focus on international tourists from core markets.
Stately Homes and Gardens:
27 buyers met with 27 suppliers at Tatton Park on the 29th September, where 1,080
appointments took place overall. Cheshire also hosted a FAM visit on the back of the
event showcasing Chester city centre, Chester Zoo and Ness Botanic Gardens. The
feedback from the evaluation has been very positive, the overall satisfaction of the
event is 88% and 93% of the buyers have stated that their perception of the North has
changed and they will add the North to future itineraries.
Best of the North:
A “Super” Marketplace-style event was held at the Harrogate International Centre,
where 60 buyers met with 60 Northern suppliers and a total of 2,880 appointments
took place. There were also four FAM trips, which took place in the Peak District, York,
Durham and Harrogate. Overall satisfaction for the event was 88% from buyers and
86% from suppliers.
Captains of Industry:
On the 17th March we hosted 15 senior inbound travel trade business leaders in
Manchester, with the intention to transform their perceptions of what the North has to
offer and create a group of Northern evangelists. This event provided money can’t buy
experiences , including a VIP behind the scenes tour at Manchester City Football Club
with legend Tommy Booth, a behind the scenes tour at Media City and the BBC and
finally a presentation on the programme followed by dinner at The French at the
Midland. After the main event, delegates had the opportunity to further their product
awareness and attend a FAM visit to either Cheshire or Yorkshire. 92% were very
satisfied with the event, with 100% advising that they would attend a similar event in
the future. Great buyer relationships have now been formed with businesses including
MIKI travel, Manchester Airport and SuperBreak.
2015 Highlights
Heritage is GREAT –
International Marketing
We worked to promote England’s Heritage
Cities to consumers in Northern France
using funding secured through the GREAT
campaign to raise awareness of the cities
outside of London, and to drive
consumers to a new French content page
on the England’s Heritage Cities website.
Working with 10 other Heritage Cities around
England, as well as Visit England, we planned
an outline targeted marketing campaign and
led on the creative and accompanying PR
programme for the campaign. We created an
advert for YouTube and online banners to be
used as the visuals for the campaign, which
were translated into French.
The advert had over 530,000 views during the
campaign, from January to March 2016, and
the accompanying competition received just
under 15,000 entries.
The webpage received 70,000 visits, 62,000
users and 95,000 page views, and the display
adverts over 3.5m impressions. The eight
press visits achieved circulation of 1.6m and
8.4m reach.
300,000 additional nights for trips have
already been booked and 64,000 additional
trips booked as a result of campaign.
Marketing Consultancy
In 2015 we provided marketing consultancy services for a range of clients both in the private and public sectors.
ChloBo – Social Media Analysis & Strategy
The main objectives of this campaign were
to align the brand with their top
competitors, to build a loyal, engaged
audience, and to increase online sales via
the website.
The project kicked off with an in-depth
analysis of ChloBo’s existing social media
channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and
Pinterest) providing an insight into the
audience profile and how well engaged the
audience was with each channel. We then
developed a bespoke, tailored social media
strategy for the marketing team at ChloBo
to deliver. The strategy covered topics such
as tone of voice, hashtag development,
frequency and timings, scheduling and
using analytics.
By following the social media strategy, the
team at ChloBo saw a significant increase in
traffic to the website, as well as a notable
increase in online sales and substantial
increase in engagement from their
audiences.
Lion Salt Works – PR Management
Following a £10m restoration project, Lion
Salt Works re-opened in June 2015 offering
a fascinating journey through the life of the
country’s last open-pan salt making site.
The objectives of the PR contract was to
position the museum as a new ‘must see’
attraction in Cheshire, as well as
establishing relationships with several key
sectors such as industrial heritage,
museums, archaeology and arts press.
We developed storylines pre-launch as well
as a series of press releases highlighting the
key features and events. Familiarisation trips
including a specialist Geology themed event
with over 45 of the UK’s top Geologists and
salt experts.
We achieved national coverage with several
pieces in high-profile publications, as well
as extensive local media coverage.
Anderton Boat Lift – Marketing Management
Anderton Boat Lift, managed by Canal and
River Trust, outsourced their entire
marketing activity to Marketing Cheshire.
This included management of their social
media channels, design, print and
distribution of leaflets, including the main
summer visitor leaflet door-dropped to
postcode targeted households, eventspecific
radio campaign and digital
marketing.
We have also recently confirmed that we
will be supporting Anderton Boat Lift with
PR management for the coming year.
have gone ahead with the conference,
