Beauty Balmy High Keep your skin radiant - despite the radiators - with Josephine Fairley’s moisturising musts In my office, for years, I’ve had a really useful little humidity meter. It was sent to me by Volvic, years ago, and it tells me how damp or dry the air is. Over summer, the needle was occasionally pointing at the ‘Damp’ zone – but mostly ‘Normal’. But I know the minute I switch on the Dyson heater in my non-centrally-heated office, and turn up the thermostat on the timer downstairs, that needle will head ‘Dry’-wards – and it’ll be bad news for my skin. Central heating is one of skin’s least-recognised ‘enemies’. It strips the moisture from the air – and sucks it out of our complexions. That’s why, come autumn, your lips feel dry, your elbows go flaky, and your body may even start to itch. There are, however, ways to combat the problem. Some of them are ‘lifestyle’ fixes, others come in cream, oil or buttery form. But you won’t just be helping skin’s ‘comfort’ factor when you set out to counteract the effects of a dry indoor environment: you’ll also be helping skin to defend itself against ageing. When skin’s all moist and dewy, cells ‘communicate’ perfectly. They get the message to produce lots of lovely collagen and elastin, which gives skin its ‘bounce-back’ factor, and to turn over at a healthy pace. Not enough water? Cells may take up to 40 days to renew, which is going to leave your complexion looking flat and dull. This month, it’s all about moisture. But the very last thing you want to do is spritz on water or toner (contrary to what many a beauty ‘expert’ will tell you), to try to combat dryness. Those are fine in summer, when the air’s damp. In winter, the water will evaporate – and take some of your skin’s precious moisture with it. By contrast, what you want to do is use the right product to optimise skin’s ‘barrier function’. I’m not a big one for blinding readers with science, so here’s the simplification: when your skin’s barrier is impaired, it acts a bit like a sieve - liquid escapes. When it’s robust – almost ‘sealed’ – natural moisture is kept in, that cell communication happens efficiently, and skin looks ‘plumped-up’ and radiant. One of the best-known ‘barrier products’ is of course Vaseline. Now, I’m absolutely not suggesting that you slather your skin in Vaseline – even if Joan Collins does swear by it; it’s way too greasy for applying make-up and there is probably even less of a pleasure factor in using it as part of your night-time regime than in applying it to a small person’s derrière. Like, less than zero. But at least in part, one very good reason that the ultra-rich, somewhat pricy Crème de la Mer earned its impressive anti-ageing reputation is that it, in common with Vaseline, is brilliant at maintaining skin’s ‘barrier’. (La Mer The Moisturizing Cream is priced from £60 for 15ml. Not only do I have friends who swear by it, but it did very well in some of our Beauty Bible trials.) The good news is that great moisturisers are now available at every price-point. A couple which have most impressed me lately happen to be real ‘steals’, actually. The Sanctuary Illuminating Whipped Moisture Creme SPF15, £15.50, leaves skin looking incredibly healthy, thanks to some light-reflecting particles in the light-as-air, bliss-to-use formulation. (There’s an SPF15, too: enough for this time of year, but you’d want to up that come next summer.) Soap & Glory Speed Plump Overnight Moisture Mousse, £14 for 40ml, is equally joyous to use: as the name suggests. It harnesses, I’m told, something called ‘Bubble-BoostTM Technology’: each time you open the jar, the ‘self-bubbling’ mousse regenerates, refilling with air. 143 wealdentimes.co.uk
