The relevance of Summerhill today is probably that its ideas, shared worldwide via Neill’s books have, for nearly a century, influenced other free-thinking educators and schools. It’s a case of buyer beware, with all these schools and it’s all too easy to let your liberal principles get the better of you so that your child is sold short. The best independently minded schools focus on rigour and firmly reject the word ‘alternative’. Take Hampton Court House School for example. “We don’t reject the tenets of traditional education, not at all,” says headmaster Guy Holloway, who talks to staff applicants by Skype before inviting them in for interview because he wants to be sure that they are committed readers and have a range of intellectual interests and passions for sharing them. Holloway himself teaches a history of music course, teaching is bi-lingual (English and French) in Years 1-4, Mandarin is taught to all as part of the curriculum and many pupils can chat in it. Holloway teaches a Cultural Studies course which allows for plays and novels outside examination specifications. He believes strongly that children must be helped to learn how to make the very best possible use of their time. The school achieves all this without the trappings of uniform and it’s Christian name terms throughout. “Our staff are not friends with the children but we are friendly,” says Holloway. It works. 42% of all HCHS GCSE grades were graded A or A* this year. Another example of a different way of working began with Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). He was an Austrian philosopher who applied his ideas about how human beings function and develop to a number of fields as well as education. The first Steiner School was opened in Stuttgart in 1919 (interestingly, two years before AS Neill’s Summerhill). Today there are 26 such schools in England (including one in Brighton, one in Canterbury, one at Forest Row and four in London. In Britain these are fee charging schools. In most European countries they are part of the maintained sector. The emphasis in a Steiner school is on the needs of the whole child and the unforced development of a love of learning with an emphasis on artistic activity and the development of the imagination. The idyllically rural Canterbury Steiner School, for instance, has a well-equipped theatre space for musical and theatrical learning and performance which is fairly unusual in a primary or prep school. Controversially, technology is not usually used at primary level so there are no computers and tablets in Steiner classrooms.
