RUST magazine: Rust#15

RUST magazine: EnduroGP saw big changes for 2016, but can the world championship survive the massive overhaul coming in 2017? RUST’s own W2D grudge match – can you beat the boss and still keep your job? Riding the Road of Bones – which should you fear more: the bears or the mosquitoes? Yeah, we’re asking the big questions again, here at RUST… We’re offering answers, too, only we’re not quite sure how correct they are. You can decide on that. It’s a monster issue by the way, our biggest yet at 77 or 154 pages (depending on the format you view with), so it’s a big read even before you reach the sticky issue of the 1980s trials bike restoration project at the tail end. And in case you miss the cue: the Dear Diaries are fictitious (you know, made up), so stay relaxed… Enjoy your riding – and reading! Best JON BENTMAN

condition cyclists call ‘bonk’ or ‘the wall’. He
wasn’t looking too flash but I reasoned with him
that while he was drawing breath, while he still
had a pulse, he should be able to ride. So we
stuffed some energy bars down his throat, gave
him a drink and I ordered him to follow my
mudguard. I’m never that fast so that wasn’t
exactly a tall order. Like that we got to the next
check ahead of time and got more food into him.
WM: It was two days of polar opposites – this
day I just felt horrible and couldn’t keep my mind
on the job at hand. I was making stupid mistakes
and was slow as you like. By 11am I had
‘bonked’ – hit the wall – I was spent. On a rocky
switchback that I had railed the previous day I
seriously cocked-up and nearly landed upside
down in a very steep ravine, saved only by the
gorse. I waved JB to ride on, to his credit he
gave me a stern talking too, in the nicest possible
way of course, and told me to stay on his tail.
I dutifully obliged and we somehow made it to
the next time check with time to spare. I really
don’t remember much other than him feeding
me at every opportunity and me consuming as
many goo sachets as I could manage.
