(Costa Animal Society) continued from page 42 CAS CATS UPDATE The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is often thought of as a canine rescue organization, but the volunteers care just as much about cats. And it’s been a busy summer in the feline department! Two kittens, Billie and Bambi (above), were found a new home in Puente don Manuel at the end of June, while Bobbie, who had been abandoned, was taken in by a family in Cómpeta. They also took an older cat, Sasha, to keep him company on their 20,000 square metres of land! Shadow and Sunshine (below left), found abandoned by an inquisitive dog, both found new homes. Shadow has joined a gang of three dogs and a cat in Cáleta while Sunshine is being thoroughly spoiled by her new owners in La Viñuela. Poor little Kenny was found by the lifeless body of his mother by a holidaymaker in Frigiliana who contacted CAS to ensure he’d be OK after she went home. Just after a foster home had been arranged, Kenny’s owner came forward and took him home. One of our speedier successes! Skyla (above) was one of eight very young kittens found by some rubbish bins in Almayate and who, after living rough, needed a period of fostering and socialization before finding a new home with a kind Spanish man. Sadly, only three of the eight were saved because of lack of willing fosterers, proving that fostering for a few weeks does save lives. And as for the other, other two, Pepsi and Smokie Joe? They are together, in a new home with two older ladies. An unforgettable experience María Elisabeth Buchanan Cobos, student at I.E.S. Sierra Almijara Nerja Finally, a gorgeous little ginger kitten was found abandoned in the street at El Borge by a young Spanish lady who has three dogs and asked CAS to help. It looks like a visitor to CAS’s stall at the Tuesday market at Trapiche will be offering him a permanent home. There are always kittens and older cats looking for new homes, but it does cost money in vets’ fees and for food. Kitten food, of course, is considerably dearer that cans of cat food from the supermarket. Your donation to help the CAS cats can be made at the charity shop in Nerja, at Trapiche market on Tuesday mornings, or via the website www.casnerja.org. For a no obligation chat about re-homing or fostering a kitten or a cat (or a dog!) from CAS, please call the charity’s secretary Diana on 679 714 612. CAR BOOT AND CAS SHOP Volunteers who run the Costa Animal Society (CAS) stall at Nerja’s Sunday car are there every week with good quality bric-a-brac and clothing at bargain prices on offer. Look for the CAS sign and giant cat at stall 174 located on the right hand side as you enter the market. Meanwhile, the CAS charity shop in the centre of Nerja calle Dr Ferran and is clearing out summer stock, so there are bargains to be had. All the money taken in the shop goes directly to CAS. My experience began one day when my physics and chemistry teacher told my class that there was a summer science camp. It was an initiative of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport in collaboration with the “Obra Social la Caixa”. The idea appealed to me so I decided I would like to go. The camp was for students that were in fourth year of ESO or first of Bachillerato and lasted a week. We had the opportunity to choose from projects held in Universities all over Spain. The students that were selected had quite good exam results. It was not very expensive as we only had to pay the enrollment of 80 euros and the transport to and from our designated University. I went to Madrid, to Carlos III University from the 10 th July until the 16 th July. The first day I was very nervous much like the rest of my group. We stayed in the Halls of Residence “Fernando Abril Martorell”. Each bedroom slept two people and they were really well equipped and comfortable. It had a volleyball court, a dining room, a recreational hall, a TV room, computers, 44 THE MARKET PLACE air conditioning etc. The first day was spent meeting each other and talking about our hobbies and what we want to study in the future. The following days were a little bit harder. We woke up at half past eight and had breakfast in the residence. Then we took a bus to go to the university and once there each person went to his designated project. There were 30 young people from all over Spain in the Halls of Residence and in total 4 projects at Carlos III so between 7 and 8 people were in each Project. I was in one called “Cyber Security”. We had five hours of classes from a university lecturer with only a break of half an hour. I have learnt a lot about encryption, attacks on the internet and medical concepts related to the internet. We ate all together with the monitors and we had another break of half an hour before having to begin again. In the afternoon we had talks about psychology, business and renewable energy. One of the days was a free day and we had some activities in the swimming pool and we learnt a little bit more about Madrid. We later returned to the Halls of Residence, where we played more volleyball, table tennis or basketball before having dinner. In the evening we played games and sang songs. The last day was of course the worst because of all the farewells to people I had come to know. I sincerely enjoyed the experience and I feel I have learnt a lot about science and about the people that were around me. I don’t regret going and I would again if I could. I recommend it to everyone who has the chance. It is an experience you will never forget.
