New Nursery in 

Puente don Manuel 

A new nursery school has been formally 

opened in Puente don Manuel. The 

regional government has provided over 

372,000 euros for construction of the new 

facility which has 41 places for the underthrees. 

Last month, they were amongst 

19,000 toddlers in the same age group 

who started the new school term in the 

province of Málaga. 

New park for Málaga 

The long-stalled project to turn Málaga’s 

old Campamento Benítez military base 

into a large public park has finally 

received the green light to move forward. 

Some three years after the central 

government handed over the 28-hectare 

site to the city, the Junta de Andalucía 

notified Málaga town hall that the 

regional government’s Environment 

Department has given final approval 

to the development plan allowing the 

creation of the park. 

Málaga Airport record 

The first eight months of the year saw 

1.5 million more passengers pass 

through Málaga airport than in the same 

period in 2015. Following the best June 

and July in its history, the airport also 

had a record August serving almost 

two million travellers, 12.4% up on last 

year. Data from AENA also show that 

over 14,000 aircraft movements were 

recorded during August.

ramparts of the Castle of San Miguel. The 

Local Councillor Louis Aragon said, "This 

task follows up our efforts to remove 

weeds from the castle walls a couple of 

weeks ago and is being conducted by 

municipal workers under the watchful eye 

of an expert." 

The operation must be undertaken 

with the supervision of a professional 

archaeologist to make sure that the castle 

does not suffer any damage from the 

cleaning. It is a very tedious task as it 

must be done with certain products so as 

not to damage the walls. 

Nerja's Caves take high technology 

deep underground 

The latest 21st-century technology has 

met prehistory with the installation of a 

fibre optic network inside Nerja’s famous 

complex of ancient caves at Maro. The 

popular tourist attraction is believed to 

be the first of its kind to deploy such a 

system underground. 

The foundation which manages the caves 

says that the new equipment allows the 

exact location of each visitor to be known 

so that relevant photographs, video 

and audio can be presented to them on 

a hand-held display unit. The network, 

which was installed in phases to reduce 

impact to a minimum, is specially adapted 

to the conditions inside the caves, which 

have high levels of moisture. 

Dog beach could face closure 

A dog beach in Torre del Mar, close 

to Almayate, could face closure after 

environmentalists have protested that it 

poses a threat to hygiene and marine life. 

The environmental group GENA have 

said that it was opened without proper 

authorisation and threatens the wetlands 

of the river Velez. 

If the beach is closed it will spark an 

argument between the many dog lovers 

who just want an area of beach to 

exercise their animals. 

GENA protest that there are laws in place 

prohibiting pets from entering public 

waters during the summer bathing season, 

unless the beaches are unfit for swimmers. 

Someone had put up a poster claiming 

that this beach was unfit and therefore the 

council got away with making the beach 

dog friendly. 

There is sure to be more to be said on this 

topic as the conflict between dog lovers 

and environmentalists continues. 

Children's medicine does 

not warn against side effects 

Consumer organisation FACUA has 

warned that the side-effects of colourant 

E-110 'sunset yellow' have not been 

included in the prospectus of a painkiller 

medicine for children. 

Dalsy, a mild Ibuprofen solution targeting 

pain and fever in children aged from three 

months to 12 years, contains the yellow 

colour E-110 but does not mention its 

possible adverse effects as required by 

European Union Regulation CE 1333/2008. 

Side-effects sometimes, although rarely, 

seen as a result of the 'E-number' 

included issues with a child's 'psychomotor 

capacity', says FACUA – which, 

roughly translated, can cause 'negative 

effects' on young patients' 'attention 

ability and activity'. 

Campaign to clean dog mess 

Almuñecar and La Herradura have 

launched a campaign to make people 

aware of the dangers of leaving dog 

excretion on the streets of the province. 

This is something both Nerja and the rest 

of the Axarquia should also address, as 

there is still far too much dog mess left 

uncleaned on the streets of a so-called 

tourist area. 

The Councillor for the Environment of 

Almuñecar and La Herradura has teamed 

up with the company who are responsible 

for cleaning the streets to make a 

campaign to educate people. 

The council representative, Louis Aragon, 

reminded residents that it is everybody's 

responsibility to keep the streets clean 

and even tell neighbours to clean up after 

their animals if they fail to do so. 

The cost of Brexit 

The EU is set to impose new border 

controls which could affect British 

citizens travelling to Europe from a 

post-Brexit UK. These include an entryexit 

system designed to tackle visa 

overstaying and the European travel 

information and authorisation procedure 

based on the US fee-paying system. 

In his State of the Union address last 

month, European Commission (EC) 

president Jean-Claude Juncker stated: 

“We will defend our borders with strict 

controls on everyone crossing them.”

In October, Cútar pays tribute to the 

Monfíes, that is, the Moors who, after 

the Reconquista, resisted expulsion 

from a land they had lived in for eight 

centuries. During the Monfí Festival, the 

village’s streets get filled with centuriesold 

customs and traditions. Tents and 

gazebos are set up to offer foods, while 

all sorts of period arts and crafts are on 

display at the souk. 

There is Arabic music, buffoons on 

stilts, belly dancers, people wearing period 

costumes, and flavours, smells and 

melodies taking visitors back in time.

La Fortaleza de Velez Malaga 

As with many things in 

Velez Malaga the Fortaleza, 

like the historic centre 

of Velez Malaga, seems to 

have been overlooked by 

tourists and visitors. But, 

again similar to the old 

town of Velez, the Fortaleza 

is another hidden gem 

in Velez Malaga's arsenal 

of secret weapons! 

I 

myself first explored the Fortaleza a 

number of years ago before much 

restoration work had taken place. It 

had fallen into a state of disrepair with 

litter and squatters. I subsequently had 

forgotten all about it but frequently 

passed by on my travels around the 

Axarquia. Now the local council have 

invested in the Fortaleza and made 

it more of a tourist attraction with information signs, lovely 

gardens, times when the actual fortress itself can be accessed 

and seating areas to admire the magnificent view over Velez 

Malaga and the coastline. 

You can really get an understanding of why the Fortaleza was 

situated where it is when you visit, perched high up 80 metres 

above sea level, it really commands the ultimate position for 

military defensive purposes. 

The Fortaleza dates back to the 10th century. Its most significant 

period of expansion was during the Nazari period of the Moorish 

occupation from the 13th century. During the 14th and 15th 

centuries it was one of a few Nasrid strongholds of the Nasrid 

Kingdom of Granada until the Catholic Monarchs' conquered. 

Some of the original defensive walls can still be seen to this day. 

The fortress and town formed part of a very important trade 

route between Malaga and Granada via 

the Zafarraya pass. 

During the 19th century the fort was 

abandoned and sold and then became 

a quarry which led to the forts ruin 

and destruction. The tower itself was 

rebuilt in 1973. But only recently has the 

Fortaleza become popular once more 

and with weekend access to the tower 

between 10am and 1pm, it is a great 

way to soak up some culture, explore 

the walls and garden areas, climb the 

tower and imagine with awe what the 

area looked like in the height of the great 

Moorish time in the 14th century. 

Directions: Take the turning for Velez 

Malaga off the motorway and follow the 

signposts for "Arenas" passing the fire 

station you turn right up a hill and at 

the next junction right and immediate 

left up a small hill to the parking area.

Cortijo Jurado 

One of Spain's most haunted houses! 

This emblematic agricultural estate was built by the Heredia family in the 19th 

century and is situated just outside of Malaga on the Malaga to Campanillas 

road. Legend has it that the house is haunted and it's dark mysterious history 

and legacy has led to the various owners over time moving on rather quickly... 

A 

project back in 2004 attempted to convert the 

crumbling building into a luxury 4 star hotel but this 

venture became another victim of the economic 

downturn when work to transform this old farmhouse into 

a luxury 210 room hotel was suspended. The property is 

now back on the market again since 2015, for a whopping 

16 million euro;- maybe the potential investor will not be 

intimidated by the black history of the legend and finish

Over time the legend grew and the Cortijo Jurado has 

become a place of pilgrimage for paranormal investigators 

and journalists. There is talk of strange lights and noises at 

night and cries of pain, all this has created a spine-chilling 

mystery of fear and suspense.

HEMINGWAY AND SPAIN 

A fully illustrated lecture in 

English by Roberta Kettel

Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) had a 

life-long love affair with Spain, visiting 

the country over a period of forty years 

more than fifteen times as travel writer 

and war correspondent. Several of his 

books including “For Whom the Bell 

Tolls”, “Death in the Afternoon” and 

“Dangerous Summer” were inspired by 

these experiences. His larger- than- life 

image and fearless exploits together 

with his unique writing style turned him 

into a twentieth century icon, and in 

1954 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for 

Literature. 

In this illustrated lecture Roberta will 

follow in Hemingway’s footsteps through 

Spain, taking a closer look at the man 

and the myth. Readings from his works 

by Ian Crawley will help to illustrate 

“Papa” Hemingway’s admiration and 

fascination for Spain, and the many 

facets of his literary output. 

About Roberta Kettel 

Roberta Kettel has lived in Spain since 

1991 and has been involved with 

NADFAS in Nerja since its beginnings 

in 1993. Roberta was the society’s 

chairman for four years from 2002- 

2006, and has organized more than 

twenty trips around Spain for the 

society between 1996-2008. She is 

presently responsible for the Capistrano 

lecture season, organises trips for the 

Capistrano Travel Club, and has given 

lectures on different topics associated 

with Spanish culture and literature to 

the Nerja History Group and NADFAS 

societies along the Costa del Sol. 

Due to high demand this year the Nerja 

& Costa del Sol DFAS (Decorative & Fine 

Arts Society) Annual Cultural Tour was 

extended to 2 separate tours a week 

apart. Over 80 members arrived in Bilbao 

by Land, Sea and Air to stay at Hotel 

Barceló Nervión located on the river 

Nervión between the Old City Centre 

and the Guggenheim where we met our 

very knowledgeable guide Danny (who 

regaled us with detailed history about the 

whole area as we journeyed around in 

our coach). We then enjoyed a welcome 

dinner in Basque Restaurant high above 

the City with amazing views. The next 

day saw the groups leave Bilbao by coach 

passing some architectural highlights on 

our way to La Rioja and then visiting three 

interesting Bodegas which have been 

designed by famous architects. Bodega 

Ysios (Calatrava), Bodega Marquez de 

Riscal (Ghery) (with a wine tasting!) and 

Bodega Lopez de Hereda (Zaha Hadid) in 

Haro. 

The 2 nd night was spent in Santo Domingo 

de la Calzada, a town on the Camino de 

Santiago, in the beautiful ambience of the 

Parador, a 12 th century hospital next to 

the Cathedral built by Santo Domingo to 

house the pilgrims who were on their way 

to Santiago de Compostela. 

The next day we set off for 

San Millán de la Cogolla, 

which was visited by many 

pilgrims on their way to 

Santiago de Compostela 

where we visited 2 famous 

monasteries of Yuso (11th 

c ) and Suso (10th c ), both 

World Heritage sites. After 

an excellent lunch in Asador 

Jesú we departed for Burgos. 

The 3 rd night saw us staying 

at the superb Hotel NH 

Collection Palacio de Burgos 

and was completed with a 

guided tour of the centre of 

Burgos including a visit to 

the beautiful 13th c gothic 

Cathedral. 

Then onto Santo Domingo de Silos. 

The cloister of the monastery has large 

capitals with carved scenes and relief 

panels, and is considered a masterpiece 

of Romanesque art. Here we listened to 

Gregorian chanting. To help finance the 

restoration of the Monastery the monks 

made a recording of the Chants and 

reached the UK Top 10 with their album! 

We had our Farewell Lunch close by. 

And so a return to Bilbao where, after a 

night’s rest, in the morning we enjoyed 

a walking tour along the river and across 

the Zubizuri bridge (Calatrava) to the 

Guggenheim Museum (Ghery) which 

culminating in a guided walk of the old 

quarters. 

80 weary travellers then made their way 

South on a late night flight satisfied in 

the knowledge they had gained over 5 

days in this most fascinating part of Spain 

and thinking of the 2017 Cultural Tour 

which will be in April 2017 with excited 

anticipation. 

Forty dogfish born at the Almuñécar Aquarium 


Almuñécar Aquarium is at the 

forefront of dogfish breeding, 

in recent months several dozen 

of these small sharks have 

been born, as reported by the 

aquarium's technical team. 

"This species of shark, unlike 

most, is a species that lay eggs 

rather than live born directly 

from the mother's womb, so they 

require special care to get ahead," 

says Francisco Leva, biologist at 

Almuñécar aquarium. 

"We believe that, based on the 

eggs we've counted and the state in which 

they are, we will see the birth of about five 

dogfish per month for some time", says 

Francisco. 

At this rate, the dogfish is set to become 

one of the dominant species at the 

Aquarium of Almuñécar thanks to the 

great work done by technicians and 

biologists, together with the general 

conditions at the facility. 

The centre has become, on its own merits, 

a prominent attraction, not only for 

tourists visiting Almuñécar but students 

and researchers interested in marine life 

reproduction.

Car News

Jaguar F-PACE, 

Global Press Event, Montenegro. 

I have to admit that when I got the invite from Jaguar to go on the 

International Press Launch of their new SUV, I did have to look on 

a map to see where Montenegro was. 

This spacious, luxurious SUV from 

Jaguar seems to have been a long 

time coming. Just about every other 

premium manufacturer has had such a 

versatile vehicle for many years, but not 

Jaguar. It's something they maybe should 

have done years ago - so has it been 

worth the wait? And was it worth the trip 

to Montenegro? 

We flew by BA (other airlines are 

available) into Dubrovnik in Croatia, just 

a two and a half hour flight from London, 

and were taken in Jaguar XJ’s from the 

airport to the border with Montenegro. 

We had to show our passports and 

were checked by both the Croatian 

Border Guards and then the Montenegro 

Passport Control. We were in fact going 

from a European Country to a non-EU 

Country and it seemed they were taking 

this very seriously, letting nobody through 

who should not be going through. They 

were checking people and vehicles very 

thoroughly. 

We got to where the cars were and soon 

got into one of them. The first was a 

3.0-litre V6 Supercharged petrol that 

produces 380ps and goes from 0-62mph 

in 5.5 seconds. The noise it made from 

the exhausts was glorious. We set off up 

into the hills, and when I say hills, I really 

mean hills. There were dozens of tight 

hairpin bends and with all the Jags in 

convoy it looked like the opening scene 

from The Italian Job. These F-PACE’s were 

so nimble and felt so light for such a large 

car, they took the bends with such ease. 

They really are more car-like to drive than 

SUV. 

We got to an off-road section of around 

7-miles which was a rough old track, 

with plenty of mud, loose stones, large 

boulders, deep ruts, and just about 

everything else you could think of on 

a disused road through a forest. If we 

thought the F-PACE drove well on the 


open road, then that was nothing to 

how well it performed off-road. We were 

shown which buttons to press to get 

maximum traction from the AWD, and 

used the ‘All-Surface-Progress-Control’ 

(ASPC) whatever that is supposed to 

mean. Whatever it is, or does, it really 

does work. Going down a quite scary, 

steep, muddy incline, we pressed another 

button, and it went down, without us 

touching any pedals, at its own speed. It 

did not slip or slide once, very impressive 

for what really is a comfortable road 

going car. After we got back onto proper 

tarmac, the nice clean Jag we set off in 

wasn’t quite as clean or pristine. 

Montenegro is a stunning country, but 

with very different levels of wealth. Out in 

the hills and in some towns it is obvious 

that money is not in abundance. But get 

down near the Adriatic and there are 

many very new hotels that are as stunning 

looking as the local scenery, very modern, 

and very upmarket. We stayed near a 

Marina that was full of multi-million Euro 

yachts, that only the rich and famous 

could afford to buy and run. The cars and 

trucks on the roads that were being used 

as everyday cars out in the sticks were 

modern classics. We saw quite a few Fiat 

500’s, very old VW Beetles, plenty of Yugo 

Zastava’s. Trucks and buses that were 

common place in the UK in the 1950’s 

are still being used and making a living 

there every day. As we drove around it 

was like watching a Classic Car Rally, very 

interesting. Our F-PACE’s looked a bit out 

of place. 

The models available are: Prestige, 

R-SPORT, Portfolio, S and First Edition 

which is limited to just 2,000 in total 

worldwide. The list of standard equipment 

even on the ‘Base’ car (the Prestige) is 

endless and includes: ASPC (Auto only), 

18-inch alloy wheels, LED Tail lamps and 

rear fog-lamps, roof-rails, powered boot 

lid, touch-screen sat-nav, trip computer, 

leather seats, shopping bag hooks in the 

boot, ‘In-Control’ Connect Pack – WIFI, 

Apps, Remote Premium, Cruise Control 

with Speed Limiter, Hill Launch Assist, 

Torque Vectoring, and so the list goes on. 

After the off-roading experience we 

changed cars and went into a 2.0-litre 

i4 Turbocharged Diesel automatic that 

produces 180ps and goes from 0-62mph 

in 8.7 seconds. The C02 emission figure 

is 139g/km and official combined fuel 

consumption figure is 53.3 MPG, though 

we did not get chance to check the fuel 

figure on the cars trip-computer. 

We took the 2.0-litre on a similar route 

of that of the more powerful petrol 

and we thought it would be massively 

underpowered on the mountain route, but 

surprisingly it did not feel uncomfortably 

slow at all. It certainly picked up its heels 

and did everything asked of it. Some of 

the inclines were steep and this engine 

performed impeccably, and this sort of 

road is not common place in the UK. The 

dramatic scenery and the twisty slippery 

roads and steep hills did not intimidate 

the F-PACE, it just played with everything 

in front of it. 

The interior is up to a very high standard 

throughout, with the exception of maybe 

the plastics on the upper part of the door, 

which are a bit hard and not in keeping 

with the rest of the car. Other that that, it 

is luxurious, comfortable and a really nice 

place to sit. The boot capacity is 650-litres 

with the rear seats up, so plenty of room 

in there. The rear seats fold down very 

easily and quickly and are almost flat 

when folded. Rear leg room is more than 

adequate, there's enough room for three 

adults on the rear seat. 

The door seals are right at the bottom 

of the doors and wrap around the sill, 

so if you do go through wet and muddy 

conditions then there is no trace of any 

dirt on the sills, so you keep clothes clean. 

There is a matt finished piece of plastic 

on the rear door surround that cannot be 

seen when the door is closed. But when 

open it is clearly visible, as it is quite a 

large piece of plastic. Maybe, some might 

think it should be colour coded, but some 

may think that it helps protect the body 

work. I’m on the fence with this piece of 

design - or engineering. 

And now to prices - and this is hard to 

believe… The Prestige 2.0d manual rearwheel 

drive starts from £34,170 OTR and 

prices go up to £65,275 OTR for the First 

Edition V6 diesel. My choice would be 

the R-SPORT AWD automatic, at a cost 

of £40,360 OTR. Over the Prestige model, 

the R-SPORT gains 19-inch alloy wheels, 

R-Sport front and rear bumpers, Xenon 

headlights with LED Signature Daytime 

running lights, headlamp washers and a 

few other nice touches to the exterior and 

interior. 

The F-PACE offers the best of all 

worlds. It's a great looking car that is so 

handsome, with nice lines and will stand 

out in any crowd. It is such a great car to 

drive on normal roads, so comfortable, 

nimble, and feels so solid. And it is such 

a competent off-roader too, it will literally 

go anywhere, as we proved on the offroad 

section. This is a cracking bit of kit, 

and such good value.

Film & Tapas Evening 

The Fellowship of The King begins a new season of Film and 

Tapas Evenings at their premises in Pasaje San Miguel, Nerja 

on Friday 7th October at 7.30pm with “Wildflower.” This 

powerful film centres on a creatively gifted college student, 

Chloe Moray, who takes refuge from the traumas of a 

difficult childhood in her art. However, whilst at college 

she begins to experience a terrifying dream that recurs 

night after night; so real is the dream and so vivid its 

detail that Chloe begins to wonder if, rather than merely 

being a dream, it might be the suppressed memory of a 

violent crime she may have witnessed as a little girl but 

blocked out from her conscious mind. 

Her search to find answers unfolds as a totally believable 

“cold-case” investigation that sends her on a journey 

which forces her to confront her past trauma and brings 

her into contact with a young man who teams up with 

her to try to find the key to unlock a decade-old unsolved 

crime. As they get closer to the truth the authorities refuse 

to believe them and call into question Chloe’s sanity. 

The film is well scripted, well acted and manages to hold 

the attention from beginning to end as it has a potent mix of 

suspense, drama, plot twists, friendship, hope, despair and 

surprises at every turn before reaching its dramatic finale. 

The Royal British Legion was formed in 1921 in response to a 

need for support for Servicemen and women and their families 

who were involved in WW1. For over 90 years it has provided 

a wide range of care and welfare assistance to the ex-service 

community. Throughout that time it has helped the families of 

those who have lost their lives serving us, and supported all 

members of the military community - past and present. 

November is the month when we are universally reminded of 

the sacrifice made by our troops. It is when we come together 

to remember with gratitude those who protect us, those who 

have died in carrying out this duty and all those who have 

suffered life changing injuries or conditions. In Nerja we start 

our Poppy Appeal on the 16th October with the Poppy Walk. 

Anyone can come along and join in, and it is a WALK not a race 

and there are no prizes -just the satisfaction of knowing that 

you have done something worthwhile. If you are interested

Our next event is the Poppy Ball at the Caves Restaurant in 

Maro on 11th November. This year we are pleased to announce

LIVE ON - TO THE MEMORY OF THE FALLEN AND THE FUTURE OF THE LIVING. 

The evening starts with canapes and drinks on the terrace 

(weather permitting), three course meal with wine, and dancing 

to the Flying Dolphins, and a superb raffle. The cost is 35 euros 

(as it has been for the last 12 years!!!) As this is a joint event,

Following the Ball on Sunday 13th November we will be holding 

our Remembrance Day event. This is held in the Lower Salon 

of the Caves Restaurant, starting at 11.40 am. This is simply an 

occasion to join together and give our thanks for the freedoms 

we have been able to enjoy and to hope for peace in the future. 

It is not a religious service but in the past has been a moving 

and emotive tribute to our brave Servicemen and Women. 

There will be a lunch afterwards, in the Caves Restaurant, and 

if you wish to attend it is essential to book beforehand - by 

contacting Vera. (details below) The cost is 16 euros. 

Although Nerja is a small branch, in the past few years we have 

been able to send a very respectable donation to the Poppy 

Appeal and of course we hope to do so again this year. This is a 

very worthwhile cause and we must not allow it to be forgotten. 

The work of the Legion must continue, so we ask you to help us 

raise our funds, whether it is by coming to any of our lunches, 

events or just popping a little into our charity tins. We thank you

Club Nerja Rugby: A little bit about us 

Every story has it’s beginning, and it is no different 

for the Nerja Rugby Club, also known as CNR... 

Now, although CNR is still in its infancy 

stage, Club Nerja Rugby has initiated their 

story with receptors of high merits and 

representing their town, Nerja, in its truest 

form. From their success in tournaments, 

its award-winning attitude, to its eclectic 

composition of players, CNR’s story is 

shaping up to be a story of achievements. 

Club Nerja Rugby was established in 2012, 

formed by a group of guys that had a love 

for this wonderful sport. In its 4 years of 

existence, CNR has won 3 championships 

in the “Liga Provincial de Malaga”. The 

Club has also won or placed in the top 3 

in various mini tournaments and beach 

rugby invitationals. 

If winning wasn’t enough, the attitude and 

drive of this club has them training 3 times 

a week. During the off-season, a bunch of 

them continue to feed their drive by going 

on mountain hikes, jogging by the beach, 

or hitting up their local bars to watch

band of brothers, you will see that they 

come from different countries all over 

the world. Led by their President, a local 

representative, Enrique Lopez and the 

Captain of the team Raul Calderon, you 

can have conversations with players 

from England and Argentina, to players 

from other parts of Spain and Scotland, 

then you can turn around and have a 

conversation with a guy from Uruguay - 

and even a Salvadoran-American. Yes, just 

like the town of Nerja, this club has a little 

bit of everything from everywhere. 

Brought together by a passion for Rugby 

driven by the need to be great for each 

other, the story for Club Nerja Rugby has 

just begun and it is now taking the step 

to the next level. Due to our success in 

the previous league, CNR decided to up 

the ante and now plays in the Andalusia 

Regional Tournament - a tournament

weight bearing exercise key to strong bones 

When the topic of bone health arises, 

we often think of milk moustaches 

and calcium supplements. But what 

about visions of hitting the weights, 

skipping or doing pushups? It turns 

out there is more to bone health than 

consuming enough calcium 

and vitamin D. 

Not only are there many other 

nutrients involved in developing 

and maintaining bone, but also 

exercise is imperative. People who 

exercise more have higher peak bone 

mass, and research suggests exercise 

plays just as important a role in bone 

health as nutrition. 

Like muscles, bones are living tissue, and 

they require stress to stimulate growth 

and maintain integrity. Just as consuming 

extra protein without exercising will not 

result in strong muscles, consuming 

calcium without exercising will not 

result in optimal bone mass. Consider 

astronauts floating around in a spacecraft 

with little to no gravity — they experience 

significant bone mineral loss. But when 

astronauts participate in heavy resistance 

exercise, bone loss is reduced. 

Exercise positively affects bone health in a 

number of ways. High-impact exercise has 

a site-specific effect on bones, meaning 

the area of the body worked in the 

exercise is where the most benefit is seen. 

Stress in the form of a load stimulates 

calcium uptake and new bone formation, 

especially in children. Exercise also 

promotes stronger muscles and enhances 

coordination and balance, thus reducing 

the risk of falling and possibly fracturing 

a bone. 

According to the National Osteoporosis 

Foundation's 2016 position statement 

on peak bone mass development and 

lifestyle factors, lifestyle behaviours affect 

20 percent to 40 percent of adult peak 

bone mass, and only calcium intake and 

exercise received evidence with a grade 

A. All other lifestyle factors — including 

intakes of vitamin D, dairy and protein, 

and smoking — received lower grades, 

suggesting they do not have as significant 

an impact on bone health as calcium and 

exercise. 

It's important to note that all forms of 

exercise are not equal when it comes to 

bone health. Weight-bearing exercise 

provides the stress load that bones need 

to stimulate mineral uptake. While this 

does occur in both children and adults, 

weight-bearing exercise is particularly 

important early in life as the most 

significant gains in bone mass are made 

during puberty. A 2014 meta-analysis 


found that weight-bearing activities in 

conjunction with high calcium intake 

resulted in optimal bone mineral content 

among prepubertal children. 

Exercise is important for maintaining 

healthy mature bones, too. The impact of 

weight-bearing exercise on bone mineral 

density of premenopausal women is 

significant, and in healthy young men, 

even short-term exercise can boost bone 

mineral density. Analyses of National 

Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 

data found that the impact of physical 

activity on bone density and risk of 

osteoporosis is significant even when 

controlling for factors such as age, sex, 

race and ethnicity, body mass index, 

calcium and vitamin D intake, tobacco use 

and socioeconomic status. 

Even postmenopausal women, who 

are at a particularly increased risk for 

osteoporosis, experience an increase in 

bone density from performing resistance 

exercises. Additionally, studies of 

osteopenia rehabilitation programs 

demonstrate feasibility and effectiveness 

of exercise on bone mineral density. 

According to the National Institutes of 

Health, children between 6 and 17 should 

get 60 minutes of activity per day with 

bone-strengthening activities three days 

a week. Bone-strengthening activities 

for children include walking, jogging 

or running; playing tennis, racquetball, 

soccer, basketball 

or hockey; climbing 

stairs; jumping rope 

or other types of 

jumping; dancing; 

hiking; and lifting 

weights. While 

there are no specific 

recommendations 

for children younger 

than 6, the NIH 

recommends they 

play actively several 

times a day. 

The National 

Osteoporosis 

Foundation 

recommends adults 

engage in weightbearing 

exercise for 

30 minutes most 

days of the week, 

with muscle-strengthening activities 

two to three days per week and balance, 

posture and functional exercises every 

day. Similarly, the surgeon general 

recommends daily physical activity with 

strength-building and balance-enhancing 

activities at least twice per week. 

Regarding type and duration, the surgeon 

general notes that five to 10 minutes of 

high-impact, load-bearing exercises may 

be sufficient, while 30 to 45 minutes of 

lower-impact exercises are needed to 

effectively impact bone health. 

When discussing bone health with 

patients and clients, registered dietitian 

nutritionists should assess physical 

activity behaviours and reinforce physical 

activity recommendations to promote 

bone health. Doctors may find explaining 

cardiovascular and musculoskeletal 

benefits of exercise to clients while deemphasizing 

weight and image-related 

motivations for exercising may increase 

clients' motivation and adherence. 

While Doctors are qualified to 

communicate physical activity guidelines, 

clients interested in learning advanced 

exercises or starting new exercise 

regimens should consider working 

with a certified fitness professional. For 

specific guidance on balance, posture and 

functional exercises, a physical therapist 

should be consulted.

To make sure your bones are really strong, start your weight bearing exercises and 

indulge in food that is loaded with calcium like this little stir fry... it's really tasty too! 

INGREDIENTS - SERVES 4 PEOPLE 

For the Sauce: 

• 1/4 cup soy sauce 

• 1/4 cup mirin 

• 1 tbsp chilli oil 

• 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar 

• 1-2 tsp chilli paste 

• 1 tbsp ginger 

• 1 clove minced garlic 

• 1 cup of water 

• 3 tbsp cornflour 

For the Stir Fry: 

• 1 cup of cubed tofu 

• 1 tbsp cooking oil 

• 4 cups of broccoli florets 

INSTRUCTIONS 

• 1 bunch of kale torn 

• 3 cups of green beans 

• 1 can sliced water chestnuts 

• 1 can cut baby corn 

• 10 brussel sprouts, halved 

• Chilli paste and black sesame 

seeds for garnish 

Start first by preparing all of your vegetables and 

setting them aside. Cube the tofu. Drain the corn and 

water chestnuts and set aside. 

When all the ingredients are ready, heat a wok on 

high heat and add the oil to heat it up. After about a 

minute, add the tofu cubes and a pinch of salt. Cook, 

stirring, until the tofu is crispy on the outer edges, 

about 6-8 minutes. Add the broccoli, brussels sprouts, 

green beans, and another pinch or two of salt and 

cook, stirring continuously for about 6 minutes, until 

digiprintnerja 

FOR ALL YOUR PRINTING REQUIREMENTS 

the broccoli has turned bright green. Add the kale, corn, 

and water chestnuts and cook until the kale softens, about 

2 more minutes. 

When the vegetables are cooked but still tender, whisk 

the sauce one last time and pour the entire bowl over 

the vegetables and stir. Allow the sauce to heat up and 

as it does, it will thicken and coat the vegetables. Heat 

and stir gently until the vegetables are fully coated in the 

thickened sauce. Serve immediately with extra chili paste 

and black sesame seeds.

APARiV Dog Rescue in Rincon de la Victoria is always looking 

for people willing to adopt or foster their dogs. We are always 

looking for volunteers to help us with various things inside 

and outside the refuge. We also have a charity shop with 

many cheap second hand items for sale in Torre del Mar. In

OLIVE 

This month it is Olives turn. Olive 

was left at our front door as a 

puppy together with her two 

siblings. Olive was born around 

January 2015. In the mean time 

she has grown into a beautiful 

girl of medium size. Her fur really 

has a beautiful brown colour. She 

is still very young so super play 

full and will fit in well in a family with kids of all ages. Who is 

going to give Olive the home she deserves? 

TAIL (Torrox Animal International League) 

When, dear reader, you consider the working operations of an 

animal charity (probably any charity in fact) it’s possible that 

you consider how the volunteers are found or come together, 

how the buildings/shops are acquired/placed, how the legalities 

are covered and complied with, indeed why there is a necessity 

for such a venture. In reality the one overriding concern from 

the first realisation that yes there is a great need for your dream 

charity, is money, that is unless you are in the fortunate position 

of having a “moneybags” to cover everything. Oh what joy that 

must be. 

Tail started by 

the realisation 

that yes, most 

certainly, there 

is a great 

demand here 

in Andalucia 

and most 

particularly in 

the Axarquia 

for abandoned 

and maltreated 

dogs. Since Tail 

burst on the scene in 2010 we have grown continuously and 

have learnt a great deal about human nature in the process. 

How caring, kind and considerate most people are as well as 

the polar opposite of how incredibly cruel others can are. 

The main lesson that Tail took on board was that cash is king. 

Without the lolly we can do nothing. In retrospect the legalities 

and paperwork to create Tail was easy – though at the time it 

seemed interminable – what has been the ultimate struggle 

has been to keep Tail in the black each month, by fundraising, 

by sales from our shops, by events and by donations. That is 

not easy but with the support of the public we are achieving it. 

Our facebook page and website will give you the details to join 

that aim, and also explain our new “teaming”scheme for small 

monthly standing orders. 

C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) 

SCRUFFS NERJA 2016 SET FOR OCTOBER 15 

Coats are being brushed and paws polished in preparation for 

the annual dog show organised by the Costa Animal Society. 

Scruffs Nerja will be held on Saturday, October 15, once 

again with the great support offered by the Foreign Residents’ 

Department at the Town Hall. 

The fun dog show will be held on Plaza de España behind 

Nerja Town Hall with all dog owners invited to enter their 

pets in one or more of the 12 classes to be judged during 

the afternoon. Entry is E5 per category or E12 for three 

categories and registration begins at 12.00 noon. 

Pedigree and non-pedigree puppies (under one year), dogs 

and bitches will be judged in six separate classes, starting at 

1.00pm, and there will be a special class for veteran dogs over 

ten years old. 

The fun classes will include a search for the dog with the 

waggiest tail, the best “sit and stay,” and the dog which is 

most obedient or shows off the best trick. Importantly, the 

judges will also be asked to choose the best dog and best 

bitch from dogs which have been rescued, and are now in 

new homes with loving owners. 

Finally, at the end of the afternoon, the winning pedigree, 

non-pedigree and rescue dogs will vie for the title Best in 

Show. 

In addition, visitors will be able to enjoy raffles, stalls and bar 

food, as well as meeting some rescue dogs still looking for 

new owners. 

It’s a fun afternoon for the whole family and an important 

fund-raiser for the Costa Animal Society. Come and enjoy the 

day while helping the animals.

CAS CATS UPDATE 

The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is 

often thought of as a canine rescue 

organization, but the volunteers care just 

as much about cats. And it’s been a busy 

summer in the feline department! 

Two kittens, Billie and Bambi (above), 

were found a new home in Puente don 

Manuel at the end of June, while Bobbie, 

who had been abandoned, was taken in 

by a family in Cómpeta. They also took 

an older cat, Sasha, to keep him company 

on their 20,000 square metres of land! 

Shadow and Sunshine (below left), 

found abandoned by an inquisitive dog, 

both found new homes. Shadow has 

joined a gang of three dogs and a cat in 

Cáleta while Sunshine is being thoroughly 

spoiled by her new owners in La Viñuela. 

Poor little Kenny was found by the 

lifeless body of his mother by a holidaymaker 

in Frigiliana who contacted CAS 

to ensure he’d be OK after she went 

home. Just after a foster home had been 

arranged, Kenny’s owner came forward 

and took him home. One of our speedier 

successes! 

Skyla (above) was one of eight very 

young kittens found by some rubbish 

bins in Almayate and who, after living 

rough, needed a period of fostering and 

socialization before finding a new home 

with a kind Spanish man. Sadly, only 

three of the eight were saved because 

of lack of willing fosterers, proving that 

fostering for a few weeks does save lives. 

And as for the other, other two, Pepsi and 

Smokie Joe? They are together, in a new 

home with two older ladies.

Finally, a gorgeous little ginger kitten was 

found abandoned in the street at El Borge 

by a young Spanish lady who has three 

dogs and asked CAS to help. It looks 

like a visitor to CAS’s stall at the Tuesday 

market at Trapiche will be offering him a 

permanent home. 

There are always kittens and older cats 

looking for new homes, but it does cost 

money in vets’ fees and for food. Kitten 

food, of course, is considerably dearer that 

cans of cat food from the supermarket.

be made at the charity shop in Nerja, at 

Trapiche market on Tuesday mornings, or 

via the website www.casnerja.org.

CAR BOOT AND CAS SHOP 

Volunteers who run the Costa Animal 

Society (CAS) stall at Nerja’s Sunday car 

are there every week with good quality 

bric-a-brac and clothing at bargain 

prices on offer. Look for the CAS sign 

and giant cat at stall 174 located on the 

right hand side as you enter the market. 

Meanwhile, the CAS charity shop in 

the centre of Nerja calle Dr Ferran and 

is clearing out summer stock, so there 

are bargains to be had. All the money 

taken in the shop goes directly to CAS.

My experience began one day when my physics and chemistry teacher told my class that there was a 

summer science camp. It was an initiative of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology and 

the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport in collaboration with the “Obra Social la Caixa”. 

The idea appealed to me so I decided 

I would like to go. The camp was for 

students that were in fourth year of ESO 

or first of Bachillerato and lasted a week. 

We had the opportunity to choose from 

projects held in Universities all over 

Spain. The students that were selected 

had quite good exam results. It was 

not very expensive as we only had to 

pay the enrollment of 80 euros and the 

transport to and from our designated 

University. 

I went to Madrid, to Carlos III University 

from the 10 th July until the 16 th July. 

The first day I was very nervous much 

like the rest of my group. We stayed 

in the Halls of Residence “Fernando 

Abril Martorell”. Each bedroom slept 

two people and they were really well 

equipped and comfortable. It had 

a volleyball court, a dining room, a 

recreational hall, a TV room, computers, 


air conditioning etc. 

The first day was spent meeting each 

other and talking about our hobbies and 

what we want to study in the future. The 

following days were a little bit harder. 

We woke up at half past eight and had 

breakfast in the residence. Then we 

took a bus to go to the university and 

once there each person went to his 

designated project. There were 30 young 

people from all over Spain in the Halls 

of Residence and in total 4 projects at 

Carlos III so between 7 and 8 people were 

in each Project. 

I was in one called “Cyber Security”. 

We had five hours of classes from a 

university lecturer with only a break of 

half an hour. I have learnt a lot about 

encryption, attacks on the internet and 

medical concepts related to the internet. 

We ate all together with the monitors 

and we had another break of half an 

hour before having to begin again. 

In the afternoon we had talks about 

psychology, business and renewable 

energy. One of the days was a free 

day and we had some activities in the 

swimming pool and we learnt a little bit 

more about Madrid. We later returned 

to the Halls of Residence, where we 

played more volleyball, table tennis or 

basketball before having dinner. In the 

evening we played games and sang 

songs. The last day was of course the 

worst because of all the farewells to 

people I had come to know. 

I sincerely enjoyed the experience and I 

feel I have learnt a lot about science and 

about the people that were around me. 

I don’t regret going and I would again 

if I could. I recommend it to everyone 

who has the chance. It is an experience 

you will never forget.

“Consumers may think 

antibacterial washes 

are more effective at 

preventing the spread of 

germs, but we have no 

scientific evidence that 

they are any better than 

plain soap and water,” said the FDA’s Dr Janet Woodcock. 

“In fact, some data suggests that antibacterial ingredients 

may do more harm than good over the long-term.” 

Experts believe that most non-medical products on the 

market contain at least one of the banned ingredients. (The 

ban doesn’t include disinfectant products used in hospitals 

and medical centres.) 

So what does this mean for you? While they are yet to be 

banned in Europe, the recommendation is to wash with 

plain soap and running water to “avoid getting sick and to 

prevent the spread of germs to others.” 

If soap and water isn’t available, try a hand sanitiser that 

contains at least 60 percent alcohol.

mustard has been proven to have a

Preparing your body for Autumn 

Chinese dietary philosophy recommends that you embrace your native 

foods in addition to eating locally-grown foods that are in season. Our 

modern diets often result in us consuming foods that were previously 

out of season and also chemically treated. Natural, in season homegrown 

and chemical-free products are more beneficial for us. 

Autumn is a time when 

nature is “falling” and 

maturing. In Chinese 

medicine our organs

Nerja 

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town 

has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa 

is a magnificent promenade that was made famous 

by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of 

place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful 

gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new 

attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive 

monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are 

many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with 

its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water 

sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja 

on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply 

the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar 

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort 

of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between 

June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have 

expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an 

impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing 

and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice 

cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés 

and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays 

and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, 

known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the 

river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela 

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the 

junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this 

direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The 

first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. 

This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge 

and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and 

immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road 

will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction 

called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, 

and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, 

Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana 

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 

3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist 

destination, and because there are many holiday homes 

here, the population triples during the summer months. 

The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. 

The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations 

from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who 

had the greatest impact on the town’s development. 

During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site 

of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle 

of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the 

complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can 

learn the history of this struggle by walking through 

the streets of the historic section where there are a 

series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which 

explain the entire story.

13 June: San Antonio de Padua - Celebrating the Christian reconquest on June 11 1569.

August: Festival of Dance and Music - Traditional time of year for people who have
