SCHOLARSHIP AWARD SPOTLIGHTS
During the 2016-17 academic year, more than 3,000 students in the USF System applied for
scholarships through the Women in Leadership & Philanthropy scholarship program, and
WLP was pleased to provide a record 61 awards to talented women throughout the
USF System. We invite you to meet a few of these outstanding young scholars.
Katherine Garcia
USF/WLP Endowed Scholar
SOPHOMORE • BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES MAJOR
During high school, Katherine served as secretary of the Future Doctors of America
and volunteered for various hospitals. She is participating in USF’s seven-year medical
program and will apply to the Morsani College of Medicine after three years. Katherine
was accepted as a research scholar and will concentrate on biomedical research,
giving her the opportunity to research infectious diseases and other areas of interest.
She hopes to advance medical care through her research and work in medicine to pursue
possible cures for infectious diseases.
Shelby Rehnke
WLP/USF St. Petersburg Scholar
DOUBLE MAJORING IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION AND
ENTREPRENEURSHIP • USF ST. PETERSBURG
Shelby recently graduated magna cum laude with a degree in elementary education with
endorsements in ESE, ESOL and reading during the Fall 2015 semester from USF St.
Petersburg. She is also a member of the Kappa Delta Pi honor society. After completing
her ESE internship at Gibbs High School, she realized that her passion in
life is working with adults with special needs, and realized there was a significant need
to support ESE students post-graduation. Shelby is now pursuing a second degree in
entrepreneurship in order to create her own business that will employ adults with special
needs. Shelby hopes that this unique business model will become the new norm for the
social impact entrepreneurs of the future. When she is not studying, Shelby enjoys all
things creative - painting, concerts, and cooking to name a few. Shelby would like to bring
a creative spin to her future business; in fact, one of her favorite places to volunteer is
Creative Clay- a St. Petersburg local non-profit organization where adults with special
needs can reach their full artistic potential.
