Harvest Festival This year’s Harvest Festival at St Mary’s Church will be held on Sunday 2nd October. A guide for donations:- breakfast cereal, sugar, fruit juice, long life milk, squash, tinned beans, meat, tomatoes, vegetables, fish and potatoes, pasta and pasta sauce, instant mash potatoes, packet soup, noodles, jam, tinned fruit, puddings, angel delight, custard and strong carry bags. No fresh food. Some Other Harvest Festivals Harvest festival as we know it today in England was started by the Rev R.S. Hawker (1804- 1875) in Morwenstow, Cornwall. He introduced the Harvest thanksgiving service to his congregation in 1843 to which Parishioners were asked to bring home grown fruit and vegetables. After the service he distributed the food to the poor and needy. In the past Saxon Farmers made corn dolls out of the last sheaf of corn harvested. The whole community were involved in bringing in the crops. This was placed on the banquet table where the parishioners had a mighty feast of thanksgiving to celebrate the harvest. The dolls were kept until the next spring. It was thought that the spirit of the corn lived on through the doll and this would maintain a good harvest the following year. The Chinese and other Asian countries celebrate their rice and wheat harvest with a Moon Cake Festival. Moon Cakes are made and eaten and hot Chinese tea drunk to give thanks for their harvest and to bring their family and friends together in celebration. Homowo Festival or Yam Festival in Ghana marks the harvesting of the Yams, the Ghanaians staple food. The first Yams are reaped and carried ceremonially back to the village where the Chief gives thanks and blesses the yield. Although the local people maybe Christian or Muslim they still give thanks and honour the spirit of the Yams and the Harvest Gods. Magione in Italy celebrates a two day Harvest Festival in November on the Feast of St Clement. After the olive harvest the local priest blesses the new olive oil at a special mass of thanksgiving. Following the mass the whole town partakes in a lavish feast to celebrate the produce. Travelling around the world, countries everywhere give thanks in a number of ways to give thanks and celebrate the gathering in of the ripe fruits and vegetables from the fields and forest. This year our Church will be collecting dried and tinned foods and donating them to the local food bank. Townswomen's Guild The next meeting of Finedon Townswomen's Guild will take place at 7.30 on Thursday 6th October in the Town Hall. Our speaker, Carol McCallister, will tell us about her experience as a contestant on the television programme 'Pointless'. Seasonal refreshments will be available, and the competition is for a Northamptonshire picture. Visitors will be very welcome.

St Mary's Thursday Club This months meeting will be held on the 27th October 2016 and we have arranged for a curry night at Koh-inoor. Please arrive for 7.30pm. If you are interested in becoming a member please call Louise on 07581 556417 for further details. We usually meet once a month on the 4th Thursday (evening). We also run a mums and tots group during school term time. The group meets on a Thursday afternoon at the Mission Room from 1.30pm - 2.30pm. The Diary of Cissie Parrot- an unreliable memoir of a Bell Ringer Tim Reaper the gravedigger was hanging around outside when we finished ringing practise. Christine Clapper says he wasn’t trying to drum up trade. He’s had some bad luck what with the divorce and the bankruptcy. Harriet Hunter says he’s 7 love lorn. She’s says he’s fallen for Victoria Timms. I know he trims her herbaceous borders but I didn’t realise he was that keen on her lawn. Andy Mann was showing off his Quarter Peel at ringing tonight. It was rubbish. It nearly ruined my last nightthe back- you know. I can’t do it anymore. Victoria Timms gave me some flowers and made a speech. The others clubbed together and gave me an inscribed hand bell. Andy gave me a car stereo. Apparently, they don’t come in boxes anymore, saves on packaging. He said he could fit it for me if I gave him £20. I think I’ll give it to the Harvest Festival raffle.
