How Do I Select the Right Family Physician?
Finding just the right primary care fit for you and your family is a very
important decision.
We find that people who live in your immediate area and shop at
the same stores and attend the nearby church usually have the same
intuition as yours when it comes to the selection of a physician-owned
primary care clinic. There are several other ways to assess medical
practices and clinics. You could conduct the research to find out where
a physician received their education and training. Or, you could call
the local physician referral line at the nearby hospital and look up each
name you are given on insurance company websites.
Remember that social media is not the best place to go since you would
only get one side of the discussion in that privacy laws prohibit an open
dialogue of medical issues in the public eye.
Along with reputation you should consider the independence of the
clinic and if the physician’s decisions are influenced by outside or
corporate decision makers.
Here are some good questions to match-up similar interests and to
discover how your concerns will be addressed:
• Is her clinic owned by the physicians, or do they affiliate with a
particular system or network?
• What are the common illnesses and accidents he treats?
• How long does he plan to stay in the community?
• How often does the doctor complete additional education or
training?
• What is the training and experience of the medical assistant?
• What hours is the clinic available to you?
• What about after-hours access to an ‘on-call’ provider?
• How quickly will she/he get back to you when you leave a
message?
Davis Family Physicians is a good example of meeting the medical
needs of your friends and family for over 60 years. We are a physician
owned clinic seeing our fourth generation of patients right here
in Davis County, Utah.
We started seeing patients in 1950 in a small house nearby that was
known for years as the Clearfield Clinic. Since then we have had
several other addresses including our latest at 3225 West Gordon
Ave.; right where the borders of Layton, Syracuse and Clearfield
come together. We built our new building in 2005 and filled it with
up-to-date medical diagnostic equipment and personnel.
Chances are … whatever you have, we’ve seen it before and we
know how to help you manage it.
Bird Festival
May 18, 2013
Now is the time to help birds make it through these tough winter
conditions. Deep snow and prolonged freezing temperatures
make finding food a survival challenge.
Bird Feeding: It’s Fun to do and Helps Wildlife Too
Finding food in the winter can be a tough prospect for Utah’s wild birds.
During the late summer and fall, most birds leave Utah for areas that are
warmer. Those that stay find a food supply that snow, long nights, below
zero temperatures, storms and frost-forming inversion layers have severely
reduced. Only birds capable of finding seeds, berries, dormant insects and
other limited food sources can survive Utah’s tough winters.
During the cold months of winter, birds need to eat regularly to maintain
their body heat. And that’s where you can help. Feeding stations can play a
pivotal role in helping wild birds survive.
Bird feeding can also bring a host of small, colorful, fascinating characters
right into your backyard. Sound like fun? It is. But once you get started,
you have to stay committed to providing food to your birds every day.
You have to stayed committed
Most birds develop feeding patterns, moving from food source to food source
along a regular daily route. The birds that visit your yard will start to rely on
your feeding stations, especially during winter storms, cold snaps and other
critical times. If you don’t feed the birds, the birds may not have time to find
other sources to last them through the emergency.
If you start feeding birds, it’s very important that you feed them every day
through the winter and well into the spring.
Feeding stations
Different types of food attract different types of birds. Wild birds have the
easiest time finding food when the food is placed in an area where the birds
would naturally look for it. For example, a spotted towhee, which feeds on
the ground, is more likely to find food if you leave the food on the ground.
A goldfinch, on the other hand, will be looking for food higher up in a tree.
Four basic feeding locations will accommodate most of the birds that eat
Quail, juncos and most sparrows and towhees are ground-level feeders.
Because they usually search for food in tree branches, chickadees, finches,
grosbeaks, pine siskin’s and jays are quick to find food in tabletop and hanging
feeders. Nuthatches, creepers and woodpeckers prefer tree trunk stations.
Types of food
Most winter birds will eat sunflower seeds. They especially like the little,
black oil sunflower seed. White and red proso millet, canary seed and thistle
or Nyjer seeds are good for attracting smaller birds such as finches, sparrows,
chickadees and pine siskin’s.
Suet and fruit will also attract birds. Suet, which is another name for fat, is a
rich source of energy that some birds can use. Simply stuffing the suet into
cracks in the bark of a tree can turn the tree into a good suet feeder.
Feeder placement
As you set up your feeding station, keep two things in mind—variety and
safety. Providing a variety of foods and feeders, placed at different heights,
will attract a greater variety of birds.
Also, remember to place your feeders where you can easily see them. A
good place is near a window, a balcony or another place where you can see
the birds without disturbing them. Placing a feeder close to a window will
actually cut down on birds flying into the window because, after leaving the
feeder, the birds won’t have time to build up much speed.
Everyone wins
Bird feeding can supply hours of entertainment and enjoyment to people of
all ages. It can also help supplement resources the birds need in an era when
natural habitats are dwindling.
Discovering a Secret Haven
Nearly 21 years ago, by chance I turned onto a secret road that changed my
life forever. There nestled into the crook of the mountain was a massive,
old, charmingly inviting rock building. I was captivated. I pulled up to the
building to find a little old and man walking along the front porch. I asked
him who owned the building, he reqlied that he and his wife owned the
property. Without hesitation I asked if I could buy the building. His kind
reply was simple, “I have been waiting for you.” I bought the Rock Loft
from Dale and Margaret Jost, two of the kindest people I have ever met, and
the first of many great relationships to come from being in Fruit Heights. I
was not in the market to buy a building nor had I intented to start a business,
but fate and the indescribable spirit of the building had other plans for me.
Mountain Road was the original highway 89, when times were slower and
life simpler. The 1940 Historical Rock building was originally a thriving
cherry processing plant that supplied the Intermountain West with sweet
summer cherries. Many of the residents of Fruits Heights and the surrounding
communities have fond memories of the Rock Loft. The original charm
and history are evident in the building.
There are four business’ within the Rock Loft. The Bun Basket, a delicious
bakery and great place to eat lunch, the Canyon Gallery, great original art,
prints and framing, McCloud Photography, professional photography with
a personal touch. Then there is SECRET HAVEN and that is just what it is,
a ‘HAVEN’ hidden in the foothills of the maountain. Secret Haven is much
more than a place to shop. Friends gather here, traditions are celebrated,
creativity is in abundance giving customers an opportunity to transform a
house into the precious thing we call home.
The employees of Secret Haven are invaluable and a cherished part of the
spirit of Secret Haven. They faithfully serve the customers and bring a
cheerfulness that foster an atmospher of warmth. Their talent in design is
unmatched. The crew of Secret Haven realize the importance of community.
We have served on many levels, designing and creating a playhouse for
Make-A-Wish, serving the refugees, sub for Santa and collecting food for
the food bank. There is a special feeling within the walls of Secret Haven.
Did you know...?
• OLD SALTAIR (Saltair I, 1893-1925),
built under the direction of the LDS
Church and intended as a wholesome
alternative to the rowdier
resorts springing up along the Great
Salt Lake shoreline, became known
as the “CONEY ISLAND OF THE
WEST”. Architect Richard Kletting’s
designs were intended to
dazzle visitors and transport
them to a world of
“escape and pleasure”.
The multilevel pavilion was
Moorish-Victorian in ap-
pearance, with its crescent “arms”
lined with bathhouses extended
from each side. Saltair was built
over the water on a platform supported
by 2500 pine pilings, nearly
a mile offshore and accessed via
railroad trestle. The resort boasted
various rides, shows, and dining
options. For the roller coaster
enthusiast, the main attraction was
the Giant Racer, a massive roller
coaster that sent riders screaming
through drops and turns over the
water. Orville and Wilbur Wright
demonstrated their “heavier than
air machine” at Saltair, making
short, low flights above the pavilion.
Fire destroyed the Saltair I
pavilion in 1925. Of note, Richard
Kletting would later design the
State Capitol. Saltair II (1926-1970)
was built larger and more colorful,
with emphasis more on attractions
and entertainment, including “Big
Bands” performing in its massive
ballroom. Saltair III (1982-present)
was built conveniently at I-80 exit
104. Knowledge of the original site
and its legacy faded from our collective
memory. For the explorer,
visible remnants still lie along the
overgrown trestle that leads to the
pavilion site. Pilings marking the
Giant Racer’s route also remain
along with ceramic fragments from
the “old Ship Café”. Remember the
1967 Beach Boy’s record album art?
Photos show the band hanging out
at a decaying Saltair II, balancing
atop a tall collection of pilings that
once served as a dock. With respect
to the Great Salt Lake and Saltair,
here two mindsets have always
coexisted at odds with each other:
the easy-going beach groove that
Saltair attempted to harness, and
the harsh desert environment that
eventually did it in.
• Bonneville Salt Flats, also a remnant
of the ancient Lake Bonneville, is so
flat that it aligns nearly perfectly with
the shape of the earth. It is located
just off the I-80, near the Utah-
Nevada border. The flats stretch
over 30,000 acres and is a fragile
resource managed by the Bureau
of Land Management. High speed
auto/motorbike racers, commercial
filmmakers and thousands of visitors
visit this destination.
Midnight
Euro
by two individuals with a passion for automobiles. While
their background is in European cars they are often found
years at the dealer they decided they wanted to go and
over a year and are growing quickly.
Their willingness to do whaterver it takes to make their
customers happy is one of the key reasons they have been
MAID-RITE
Way back in 1926, in a faraway place called Muscatine, Iowa,
Fred Angell, a local butcher, had some spare time one day.
Without the internet and ESPN and Facebook, Fred used his
spare time to create a new sandwich that would quickly
become a local favorite and later a favorite across the
midwestern states. Fred worked to get the right combination of
a special cut and grind of meat and a selected blend of spices.
When a deliveryman tasted Fred’s new creation, he said, “This
sandwich is made right.”
With that, the Maid-Rite loose-meat sandwich was born. Fred
was quite a sandwich maker but not much of a speller.
Our select line of seasoned loose meat sandwiches are made
from 100% USDA Midwestern fresh ground beef and served
on a steamed white or wheat bun, with your choice of ketchup,
mustard, onion and pickles.
Did you know that the “loose meat” hamburgs featured at Maid-Rite
originated in Muscatine, Iowa way back in 1926...?? (YES...hamburgs, not
hamburgers”)
Did you know that in addition to the loose meat sandwiches they are famous
for, that Maid-Rite also smokes all their chicken, turkey and pork fresh and
in-house for their other sandwiches, wraps and salads...??
Did you know that the Layton Maid-Rite Diner features delicious shakes
and malts and Italian sodas...???
The first Maid-Rite in Utah opened on March 21, 2012, and
Scott and Celina proudly share their Midwest-style sandwiches,
soups, wraps, salads, shakes and malts with the great folks
along the Wasatch Front. Scott grew up in the Midwest eating
Maid-Rite sandwiches, and his father, William, worked at a
Maid-Rite Diner in Tama, Iowa, before his army days in the
second World War. Scott and Celina, Layton residents, invite all
Utahns to discover the “Maid-Rite” sandwich and learn what
all Midwesterners know...that Maid-Rites are delicious!!!
Did you know that Maid-Rite Diners have existed since 1926 and are the
second oldest restaurant franchise in the United States....??
Did you know that the Layton Utah Maid-Rite Diner is the only one in
Utah and the furthest west Maid-Rite in the franchise...??
Did you know that Maid-Rite Diners are found in 12 states and that there
are over 80 stores...??
Kid to Kid
Kid to Kid is not only the best of kids’ resale, but a contributor to
the greater good of the community. Local owners Buck and Chris
Elton make the business of recycling kids’ stuff their life passion.
Everyday, customers in their Ogden and Layton stores have the
chance to recycle kids’ stuff, earn cash or 20% more in store
credit for their items, and enjoy shopping a store full of clean,
high-quality kids’ stuff for less.
This commitment to the community does not end with recycling
kids’ stuff. Any items that are not purchased from customers are
checked for safety recalls and then, if the seller chooses, are
donated to the Utah Foster Care Foundation. Plus, with Buck’s
background as a military helicopter pilot, the Elton’s are especially
proud to offer a military discount. Kid to Kid gives families
an opportunity to do something great for their environment, their
community, their kids, and their wallets. Gather your outgrown
kids’ stuff and see how easy it is to sell to Kid to Kid today. Look
for Kid to Kid’s little pink door in Ogden and Layton, and check
out kidtokid.com/Ogden or kidtokid.com/Layton to join their
email club and receive exclusive offers.
