WINES
NOT TO BE MISSED
to tap into the potential gold mine. Halaal tourism is nothing new to South
Africa, with the country positioned as one of the five most popular non-
Organisation of Islamic Cooperation destinations in the global Muslim travel
market. “We’ve got a strong Muslim culture and we need to put it out there as
part of what we do,” says Cape Town Tourism chief executive Enver Duminy.
During a 2014 interview with the Cape Argus, Duminy said Cape Town attracted
1.3 million international visitors a year, but the goal was to hit 1.5 million.
Even travel companies have tapped into the market with specialist websites
geared towards Muslim tourists. In 2013 Singapore-based firm Crescentrating
launched HalalTrip.com, offering a wide range of features for tourists wishing to
travel in accordance with the rules of Islam.
iSimangaliso - riding for conservation
The crowning event in iSimangaliso’s Eco-Series, the iSimangaliso MTB 4
Day powered by Nashua, exceeded all expectations this year with some 250
riders enjoying yet another spectacular trip through the World Heritage Site
and surrounding lands. A key component of the iSimangaliso MTB 4 Day, as
with other Eco-Series events, is the compulsory contribution towards the
iSimangaliso Rare and Endangered Species Fund. This single event raised a
further R230 000 to be spent exclusively on conservation initiatives for the
Park’s protected wildlife.
Tshwane plans Rio-style carnival, tourism push
Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga has big plans to market his city, which includes
South Africa’s capital Pretoria, with a Rio-style carnival, music, and nature.
Msimanga said the city was being under-marketed. One example was the
Dinokeng game reserve. “We are the only metro in the world that boasts the
big five, but we are not really aggressively marketing that,” he said. “Imagine
a bed and breakfast in Hammanskraal for people going to visit Dinokeng,”
Msimanga said. The music industry was another untapped market. Tshwane
had a distinct sound, whether it be house, hip-hop, or jazz. He wanted to ensure
Tshwane attracted people from everywhere, to see how South Africa’s capital
city celebrated its own heritage and culture.
