Leading in Song I’ve sung in choirs since I was 10 years old, as well as learning to play the piano since the age of five. The organist at my first church took me under her wing to learn to play the organ when I was in my 20s, and when she died a few years later I’d sufficiently mastered this to be able to take over from her. This didn’t last long though, because I moved out of the area due to my first job and I was soon sharing the organ duties at my new church (St Paul’s, Norton Lees). In my mid-30s I started Sunday Best, a small chamber choir which meets, as its name suggests, on Sunday evenings and is still going strong; I also met my wife Karen when she joined this group. Ten years later I started the Library Singers while based in the Sheffield Central Library supporting their IT system, and this group is also still operating. However, with only one full-time worker still with us, most of the others having retired, we don’t meet every week due to a lack of numbers; retirement is clearly a busy time for singers! Leading the worship at St Paul’s had worn me out mentally, so when Karen and I moved to St Chad’s I didn’t offer any help with the music, and the first year was lovely - I regained my desire to worship. Gradually I got back into it, and now I’m the organist here. It’s about a year since I took over from Mike Bland, and I’ve very much appreciated the lovely comments that I’ve had from a lot of people. No new people have joined the choir in this time, but no-one has left either so at least we’re a stable group. This is my first Christmas in charge of the music and I’m aiming for variety in the carols that we’re going to sing from the choir stalls on December 14. Hopefully a lot of people will augment the choir for this occasion, especially men! I won’t tell you what the five carols will be, but I will say this – I don’t intend to play any of them on the organ! To enjoy being in a choir that someone else was leading and organising, I joined the Dore Male Voice Choir in the summer. Word soon gets round though, and I recently played the piano for a rehearsal when the other two pianists were unavailable. St Chad’s Church Tuesdays, from January 20 at 7.30pm Christianity Explored gives you time and space to consider the big questions of life and to explore the life of the person at the heart of the Christian faith – Jesus Christ. zz zz zz You don’t need to know anything about the Bible. You won’t be asked to read aloud, pray or sing. You can ask any question you want, or just listen. This seven-week course starts on Tuesday, January 20 at 7.30pm at St Chad’s Church, 9 Linden Avenue.
