home
Welcome to the February and March 2007 edition of
Impact. This is a time of year when light is in short supply;
the weather is not at its best and many of us appreciate
closing the front door at night, retreating to the
comfort and safety of home. So ‘Home’ seems an appropriate
theme for this edition.
Our homes are very important to us - so much so that
many songs have been written about home, including:
Chris Rea’s ’Driving home for Christmas’; Simon & Garfunkle’s ’Home-ward Bound’;
Marvin Gaye’s ’Where-ever I lay my hat, that’s my home’ and John Denver’s ’Take
me home country roads’.
There are also many magazines about our homes, including: ’Homes and Garden’;
’Woman & Home’; ’Good Homes’ and ’Ideal Home’. And if you have Freeview, a
little channel surfing will soon turn up a TV programme about homes, such as
’Home Front’ and ’Homes under the Hammer’, plus loads without the word ‘home’ in
the title!
So, why the interest in homes? Partly, of course, because they play such a big part
in our lives - but more pointedly because your home says a great deal about you, as
well as being a place where you live and therefore belong.
Each one of us has a need to belong - to belong to a family or a community bigger
than ourselves, and our homes provide a place for this.
Interestingly, Jesus enjoyed spending time in people’s homes and also talked about
our need for a spiritual home. His famous story (often called The Prodigal Son) is
all about a lad who was rude to his father and left home, and soon discovered
(when things got tough) that he was rootless and sad. That’s how many feel who
stray away from God. When he came to his senses and finally returned, what did
he find? An angry Father? This is how many of us expect God to be, but in fact he
found quite the opposite. Jesus tells of a heavenly Father who runs to embrace his
son and then throws a big party to celebrate his return! The Father, in fact, has
been watching and waiting all this time, anticipating his son’s home-coming.
St Chad’s is a church where quite a number have been ’away’ from God, but have
chosen to return - and as they've done so, they’ve discovered that there is a
heavenly Father who welcomes us home. Is that your experience too?
Enjoy this magazine and it’s ’home’ theme. It may even encourage some to make a
conscious decision to return to the strong, embracing arms of our heavenly Father -
and to discover the security and peace of coming ‘home’ to God.
Tommy says to the teacher
"Miss. would you ever punish
me for something I didn’t do"
"No, Tommy of course not" the
teacher replies.
"Good” says Tommy, “cause I
didn’t do my homework"
Dad: "How's your science
assignment coming on?"
Son: "Well, my science
teacher suggested that I use
the Internet for research, and
it's been very helpful.
Dad: "Really?"
Son: "Yes! I've already found
17 people who will sell me
the answers!"
The homework schedule
Here is an explanation of the school homework
policy for the average student. Students should
not spend more than ninety minutes per night.
This time should be budgeted in the following
manner if the student desires to achieve
moderate to good grades in his/her classes.
5 minutes looking for assignment.
11 minutes calling a friend for the assignment.
13 minutes explaining why the teacher is mean
and just does not like children.
8 minutes in the bathroom.
10 minutes getting a snack.
11 minutes checking email
16 minutes checking the TV Guide.
6 minutes telling parents that the teacher
never explained the assignment.
10 minutes sitting at the kitchen table waiting
for Mom or Dad to do the assignment.
Teacher: Where's your homework Billy?
Billy: I made it in to a paper plane and
someone hijacked it!
A language professor was lecturing
to his English class one day. "In
English," he said, "A double negative
forms a positive. In some languages,
though, such as Russian, a double
negative is still a negative. However,
there is no language wherein a
double positive can form a negative."
A voice from the back of the room
piped up, "Yeah, right."
Sarah and Simon were arguing over the
breakfast table.
"You're so stupid," said Simon.
"That's enough" said their dad, "Simon,
say sorry to Sarah.
Simon replied "I'm sorry you're so stupid!".
Home office
Oh dear, this particular ‘Home’ has got itself in the news again for all the wrong
reasons. I have no intention of getting involved with any political debate in these
pages but I thought it might be useful if I listed what the Home Office role is, so you
might be better able to follow developments. The Home Office is responsible for:
• reducing and preventing crime. They are currently reforming the criminal justice
system to put the concerns of victims of crime at the heart of the work they do.
• keeping the UK safe from any threat to our national security. They work with the
police and security agencies to ensure they do all they can to prevent any harm
coming to our country or our people.
• immigration and nationality. It's their job to regulate entry to, and settlement in,
the UK, including passports and visas control & providing information about
migrating to the UK, and the latest on ID cards.
• Controlling Anti-social behaviour, which they define as any activity that impacts
on other people in a negative way.
(This obviously excludes Government activity! - Ed)
• Controlling Drug misuse and working hard to help individuals and communities
overcome it.
• building a safe, just and tolerant society for everyone in the UK, regardless of
their race, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or age.
Happy golfers
Today, on the radio, I heard the results of a recent survey which
concluded that “the best golfers come from happy homes”. This
very scientific piece of information was discussed by the presenters,
who decided the same must be true of any sport or hobby or
job – if someone has encouragement & support at home they will
do better than a person who doesn’t.
Many of you will be reading this in the privacy of your own home, where you can
feel free to read it when & where you like, with your feet on the table if you want to,
& pass comment on the content without fear of reprisal. Home is, hopefully, a place
where we can be completely at ease, away from the expectations & restrictions of
work, school & other people. If we are fortunate enough to be part of a family, home
is also the place where someone will celebrate with you when things go well,
commiserate with you when you feel bad, listen when you’re enthusing/moaning/
deliberating about something, help you when you have a problem, tell you when
you’re being unreasonable, and love you when you’ve been a real idiot. I know
there are some homes where this sadly isn’t the case, but many of us are the
special individuals we are because of the love, care & encouragement of our
families.
My husband & I have recently done a parenting course which asked us to think
about our vision for our family, and to identify values we want to instil in our children
so that their hearts and minds choose to do what is right rather than wrong. If we
are able, by our teaching & by our example, to help them grow up to be honest,
loving, confident, respectful, forgiving, kind & generous people, we will have
reached our goal as parents.
Of course, this isn’t easy, & the most sobering lesson
I learned from the course is summarised in the first
session : “We reproduce who we are, not what we say. It
is unreasonable to expect a child to listen to your advice &
ignore your example.” This means when we are wrong,
we have to admit it; we have to be honest, even when it’s
embarrassing; we have to find a way to show we respect
others, even when we might not agree with what they say
or do, & we have to be generous when we’d really
rather not!
If, as a community, we resolve to make our homes a place of love, honesty,
encouragement, respect, generosity & forgiveness just imagine what kind of place
Woodseats could be, what an influential generation of people we could be raising,
and what a great bunch of golfers we could produce!
Home-?
"Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam, be it ever so humble, there's no
place like home" - so wrote J.H. Payne in 1823 and I'm sure that, in 2007, we'd all
still agree.
If you have some time to spare it's fascinating browsing through Roget's Thesaurus
of English Words and Phrases. Take the word "Home" for example. There are
countless definitions of the word - dwelling, refuge and bolthole to name just three.
We've all heard the well-known sayings "An Englishman's home is his castle",
"home is where the heart is", and "home-sweet-home", but when you begin to look
at everyday phrases or words where "home" is a pre-fix, the list is seemingly
endless.
Consider the following - at home; home and away; homebase; homecare; Home
Counties; home and dry; home economics; home from home; home front; home
furnishings; home ground; Home Guard; home help; home improvements; home in ;
home movie; Home Office; home rule; home straight (or stretch); home team; home
truth; homebound; homebuyer; homebuilder; homecoming; homegrown; homecooking;
homeland; homeless; homemade; homemaker; homepage, homesick;
homespun; homestead; hometown; homeward; and (though I'm sure most young
people would be happier if there wasn't such a word!) homework.
Some of these are covered in this Impact but I wonder if you can think of any more?
HOME-LESS
In our work we often come across
vulnerable people who are either homeless
or have been given a home by the
council but have nothing in it and are
struggling to maintain their tenancy for a
variety of reasons..
Sometimes people are homeless
because they are escaping domestic
violence such as one young lady we
came across recently who had had to
escape from another city because her
children’s father had abused their
children or the single mum who had
been hounded out of her home because
of an orchestrated campaign to force
her out for no apparent reason other
than she decided to stand up to a gang
of youths who were throwing stones at
her window. We also work with people
who have been granted asylum or who
have not been granted asylum and are
in an even worse position than those
who have. One family of asylum
seekers which we came across recently
had had to escape their home country
because the father was a political
journalist in a country which did not
appreciate the dictator being criticised..
He and his whole family had to escape
in the night with just the things they
were wearing to escape the clutches of
the secret police. They eventually made
their way to this country because the
father spoke excellent English and
spent two years being moved round the
country until their case for asylum could
be heard and eventually were resettled
in Sheffield.
Some people are evicted from their
rented accommodation by their landlord
because they can not pay the rent or
because they have lost their job or
through ill health. Still others are forced
out of the family home because they
have reached the age of sixteen and
because they are no longer in full time
education the family allowance has
been stopped. Some people come out
of care at sixteen and find that they
have no where to go. Others come out
of prison or hospital with no where to
go. They are found accommodation by
various agencies throughout the city but
with little family support they really
struggle to maintain a lifestyle that any
of us would find tolerable let alone
enviable.
Anyone who is homeless is entitled to
be placed in what is called interim
accommodation. This is short term
accommodation which is often funded
and supported by the council but not
necessarily owned by them. This will
either be a flat in a block of flats wholly
reserved for people needing a home or
may be individual homes dotted
throughout the city. The agencies which
support these people are generally
under funded and under supported in
their efforts. The quality of accommodation
varies depending mainly on its age.
We recently delivered some furniture to
a lady in interim accommodation which
was one of a number of new houses
set in a cul-de-sac. For others it can a
dilapidated block of flats where drug
dealers and prostitutes ply their trade
and people are afraid to go out after
dark. Often we supply furniture for
people in supported housing because
the agency cannot afford to provide
decent furniture themselves. It also
means that when the family are
eventually re-housed they have some
furniture to transfer to their new home.
Anyone in interim accommodation is
given priority on the councils housing
list. Eventually they will have amassed
enough points to appear on the top of
the waiting list and are offered a choice
of council houses. They are often
houses which no one wants, in the
poorer areas of the city.
One of the problems of homelessness
is that even when granted a council
house this does not mean that all their
problems are over. For instance, when
a council house is vacated the council
have to remove every item of furniture,
carpets, lampshades etc. This means
that people take over their new home
with absolutely nothing in it – not one
stick of furniture or carpets, curtains or
light shades – absolutely nothing. They
have a roof over their heads but
nothing else. No where to sit or lie
down. No privacy and no way of cooking
a meal or washing their clothes.
Little wonder that people end up living
with friends until they can find enough
furniture to make the house liveable in.
This means that they not only have to
pay rent on a house they are not living
in but also have to contribute to the
house they are living in. If you have
grown up in an environment where you
have seen little positive parenting or
maybe been in the care of social services
all your life then you will have little
idea about how to maintain a home or
about cooking a balanced meal or eating
healthily. Even simple budgeting is
beyond a lot of people. They then find
themselves in a position where,
because they cannot maintain their
tenancy they once again find themselves
homeless or have to abandon
their tenancy because of problems in
the community. They are then back
where they started in a never ending
downward spiral.
There are many agencies which try to
help but most of them struggle to
maintain a decent service because of
cost constraints. They often have to
spend many hours chasing targets to
prove that they offer value for money
when they should be spending time
supporting their clients.
However people find themselves
homeless it is up to us to help them
whenever we can.
tenancy why not give me a ring at St
“Love from your valentine”
Let me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third
century. That was long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor
named Claudius. I didn't like Emperor Claudius, and I wasn't the only one! A lot of
p e o p l e shared my feelings.
Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to
volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in
wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. As you
might have guessed, not many men signed up. This made
Claudius furious. So what happened? He had a crazy idea. He
thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the
army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people
thought his new law was cruel. I thought it was preposterous! I certainly wasn't
going to support that law!
Did I mention that I was a priest? One of my favourite activities was to
marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept on
performing marriage ceremonies -- secretly, of course. It was really
quite exciting. Imagine a small candlelit room with only the bride and groom
and myself. We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening all the while for
the steps of soldiers.
One night, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank goodness the couple I was
marrying escaped in time. I was caught. (Not quite as light on my feet as I used to
be, I guess.) I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death.
I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what? Wonderful things happened. Many
young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to my
window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love.
One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father
allowed her to visit me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She
helped me to keep my spirits up. She agreed that I did the right thing by ignoring
the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day I was to die, I
left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it,
"Love from your Valentine."
I believe that note started
the custom of exchanging love
messages on Valentine's
Day. It was written on the day I
died, February 14, 269
A.D. Now, every year on this day,
people remember. But most
importantly, they think about love
and friendship. And when they
think of Emperor Claudius, they
remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh --
because they know that love can't be beaten!
Home-guard
In the opening episode of 'Dad's Army',
Britain's Home Guard (or rather, as it
was called originally, the Local Defence
Volunteers - or LDV) was born in broad daylight, on Tuesday 14
May 1940, inside the office of George Mainwaring, the pompous
but fiercely patriotic manager of the Walmington-on-Sea branch of
Swallow Bank. He turned on his wireless just in time to catch the
end of the broadcast by Anthony Eden, the secretary of state for
war, addressed to 'men of all ages who wish to do something for
the defence of their country':
The historical reality, back in the summer of 1940, had not, in fact,
been very different from the fiction and was equally shambolic. The
date - 14 May - had been the same, although it was not until shortly
after nine o'clock In the evening that Eden spoke to the nation via
the BBC's Home Service.
The Local Defence Volunteers was launched without any staff, or funds, or premises
of its own. Eden had simply instructed his listeners 'to give in your name at your local
police station and then, as and when we want you, we will let you know.' Before
Eden's broadcast had ended, police stations in all regions of the nation found
themselves deluged with eager volunteers. By the end of the first 24 hours, 250,000
men - equal in number to the peacetime Regular Army - had registered their names.
Membership continued to grow at a remarkably rapid rate and by the end of the
following month it exceeded 1,400,000 - around 1,200,000 more than any of the
Whitehall mandarins had anticipated. Order did not need to be restored: it had yet to
be created.
It was a while before the men of the Local Defence Volunteers were able to look - let
alone feel - like 'proper' soldiers. Mainwaring's newly-formed platoon had to make
do with humble armbands for military outfits, and such makeshift 'weapons' as
pouches of pepper, pikes, pitchforks and catapults - 'They'll be using conkers next!' -
before, belatedly, a set of ill-fitting denim uniforms and a modest supply of rifles
arrived.
The reality was again not so different and the wait for proper weapons was longer
still. While the War Office searched for suitable arms from abroad, the eager
volunteers proceeded to improvise as in the TV series.
Ever since the start of the Blitz in September 1940, the Home Guard had come to be
valued more as a key contributor to civil defence (liaising with the police and the firefighters,
clearing rubble, guarding damaged banks, pubs and shops, assisting in
rescue work and generally making itself useful in crisis situations) than as a bona
fide anti-invasion force.
As soon as the fears of invasion started to fade, and by the middle of 1943, with the
Germans seemingly well on their way to defeat, the Home Guard had lost much of
its sense of purpose and the government announced that the Home Guard would be
stood down the following month.
On Sunday, 3 December 1944, at a farewell parade in Hyde Park, King George VI,
the Home Guard's Colonel-in-Chief, declared: 'History will say that your share in the
greatest of all our struggles for freedom was a vitally important one.' At its peak the
force had numbered 1,793,000; 1,206 of its men had either been killed on duty or
died from wounds, and 557 more sustained serious injuries.
The changing nature of home
What are your expectations for your home? If you were to move house tomorrow,
what would you be looking for in a home? And what kind of things would happen
there?
It was not very many years ago when our homes were basic and simple. They had
just enough furnishings so as to function as places for sleeping, eating, bathing
(sometimes!) and bringing up children. Other than that, most things happened
outside of the home: in the workplace or field; at the market; at school, on the
street.
But life in 21st Century Britain is now very different. The
advent of TV and more recently the internet have made our
homes into entertainment centres, with home cinema
systems, games and music downloaded at the push of a
button. Many now work part–time of even full-time
from home and so the lines between work and home life are
blurring more and more. Comfort and relaxation is also an increasingly
important aspect of home-life, and so having sumptuous sofas;
appropriate décor and peaceful garden is seen as crucial by many.
None of these changes are wrong or bad in themselves - but they do
show how home-life has changed and will probably continue to do so into
the near future. Interestingly, as the world becomes more complicated and people’s
lives more busy, I notice a trend towards simplicity in the home. This could be just a
‘fad’ and yet I think it also betrays a strong desire in most of us to slow down and
de-clutter our lives. This is actually very important, as most of us are busy doing too
much and do not have the time to invest in the important things, like family, friendship
and God. A move towards simplicity (in the home, and in life in general) can
enable us to focus on a few good things, rather than lots of poor quality things.
Finally, our homes are worth more now than ever before and as such are more of
an asset. This can be very helpful, but also can be a great burden and a
source of strife, conflict and disharmony when families argue
and fall out over family homes when a loved-one dies. Take
care over this. Such a fall-out is usually painful and regretted
later on. Don’t forget that whilst your home (and, if you own it,
the money tied up in it) is important, we take none of it with us
beyond the grave. So, enjoy your home, but don’t let it dominate
your life. There are more important things...
Home-support
Age Concern had it’s origins in 1940 when a group of individuals,
as well as governmental and voluntary organisations came
together to discuss how they could improve the severe problems
facing older people following World War Two As a result the Old
People's Welfare Committee was born.
This committee soon gained national recognition
and in 1944 it became known as the National
Old People's Welfare Committee (NOPWC), to
distinguish it from the many local organisations
around with the same name. In 1971 the
NOPWC became completely independent of
government.
It also got a new name - Age Concern. The
name was a hit - rather than a 'committee' the
new name showed that local groups provided
essential services to older people and actually
got things done!
One of the people that gets things done is Chris Carr, who is part of our 9am
congregation, and she works as a Home Support Worker for Age Concern
Sheffield supporting clients in their own homes, who are unable to do certain tasks.
We asked Chris to tell us a little about her work and why she did it.
My tasks are many and varied and chatting is a very important part of my job, as is
listening. I am very fortunate that this enables me to form friendships with people
who have such interesting backgrounds and stories to tell. The tasks that I do
enables them to have a greater level of independence and have some control over
how they wish to live their lives.
I have worked as a Home Support Worker for 5 years and enjoy every minute.
Where else can you go to work, enjoy a cup of tea in between tasks, have a laugh
and a joke and chat, all in a days work. My friends have interesting areas of their
lives to share and I feel privileged to be part of this.
Age Concern Sheffield also provides luncheon clubs, day centres, swimming
groups, a handyman service and much
much more, as well as advice and help
on insurance and utility providers.
Home-Start
Home Sweet Home
If only that could always be so - but
sadly, sometimes it isn't. Bringing up
children can be stressful at the best
of times, but some circumstances can
make life at home far from sweet.
Relationship breakdown, the death of
a loved one, illness of a parent or a
child, moving to a new location without
the proximity of family or friends,
a multiple birth, financial worries - any
of these can make it harder to cope
and "normal" family life becomes a
struggle.
The Home-Start charity was founded in 1973 in order to address this problem
and, like Topsy, it has grown and now has branches all over the UK. It
is a free, confidential and non-judgemental charity and states, "Home-Start
believes that children need a happy and secure childhood and that parents
play the key role in giving their children a good start in life and helping them
to achieve their full potential". Volunteers, people with parenting experience
of their own, receive training so that they are prepared for the vital role
which they will play when they visit families in their homes. They listen,
reassure, offer encouragement and practical help. They may be able to give
parents a short break from the children, and can put them in touch with local
services and other support agencies. Volunteers can help parents to
rediscover the joys and fun of family life, and they often build friendships
which continue long after their support ceases to be necessary.
If you would like Home-Start to help you, or if you would like to either
volunteer your services or donate to the charity, you can find the Sheffield
Home cooking
Home Cooking - there's nothing quite like it!
Here's an easy recipe called
"Simple Husband's Cake"
and you will need:
175g (6oz) margarine
175g (6oz) sugar
2 eggs
225g (8oz) self-raising flour
450g (1lb) mixed fruit with cherries
1 small (200g/7oz) tin evaporated milk
and this is all you do:
Cream together the margarine and sugar in a
food mixer. Drop in a couple of tablespoons of
flour and break the eggs on top - this stops
curdling.
Mix well, then add the rest of the flour, the
evaporated milk and lastly the fruit. Finish off
with a good stir with a wooden spoon and put the mixture in a greased 2lb loaf tin.
Cook for 1 hour at 180C (350F or gas 4) then reduce the heat to 170C (325F or
gas3) for a further 15-20 minutes. Test with a skewer - if it comes out clean, it's
cooked OK. Leave in the tin until cold, then turn out and wrap in foil or store in an
air-tight tin.
Simple? - the recipe or the husband? I'll leave the answer to you, gentlemen - but
with Valentine's Day and Mothering Sunday just around the corner, how about
presenting the lady in your life with a wonderful home-made cake? I'm sure she'll
be most impressed!
Don’t forget
Home Move
Spring is one of the busiest times for buying & selling property, you just have to look
how fat the Morning Telegraph is becoming! It’s difficult to gauge yet if it is a buyer
or sellers market but, if you are thinking of selling you will almost certainly be
competing for buyers. Here are some tips which may just help make your house
stand out and create a good first impression:
Catch-up with 'Deferred Maintenance'. Oil door hinges, stop squeaky floorboards
with talcum powder, replace washers on dripping taps and missing hooks on
the curtains. Fix all those things that you never got around to doing. Remember
'First Impressions' count!
Curb Appeal. House buyers 'drive by' before they pick the houses to view. Make
yours stand out by painting the front door , planting window boxes or tubs of
colourful flowers, and make sure the house number is visible from the road.
The big clear out. Clutter can be distracting to people trying to visualise living in
your home. Remove any excessive personal effects from open display. If you have
family portraits everywhere or your children's drawings all over the fridge, it
becomes difficult for the potential buyer to feel at home in the space. Removal of
clutter will also make your rooms look bigger. Buy a roll of bin liners. Check out your
local charity shops. Pack your knick-knacks in boxes and seal down the lids and
stack them (in the garage & not the spare room) ready for the day you move. Don’t
forget, the same theory applies to outside as well.
Clean Wash down emulsioned walls with a soft cloth and a little detergent and
use match pots to touch up those damaged areas. Stick down lifting edges of
wallpaper. You can crayon in scuff-marks on darker papers. If you do re-decorate to
sell, use neutral light colours like cream, pale yellow and white woodwork. It's a
winner every time! And clean the windows for maximum light. Don't forget to look
up, your viewers' will. Dust or vacuum those cobwebs away especially around light
fittings
Small Investments Can Have A High Payoff
While it is impractical to spend large amounts of
money on a home you're trying to sell, little things
can make a big difference: low cost improvements
like repainting your bathroom or replacing a dingy
carpet or lino kitchen floor can have a very
positive effect on the overall impression of the
house. It's a well known fact that small
investments can pay off handsomely in increasing
the selling price of your home.
more detailed advice at
This will not create a good first impression!
January 1927
MY DEAR FRIENDS,
This year has been a very trying
one for most of us, and we can
hardly regret its passing. As members
of St Chad’s we have felt the
strain of carrying on through the long black
months of the Strike, but even through them
have been conscious of many blessings. As
we enter a New Year we sincerely trust that it
may be brighter for all, and that with renewed
industrial activity the terrible shadow
of unemployment may be lifted from many
homes. The wonderful patience of many unemployed
men has been a constant rebuke to
many of the more fortunate, who have taken
their good fortune in a very self-righteous
spirit, and shown little sympathy for the less
fortunate.
Many of our misfortunes are largely due to a
failing appreciation of “Spiritual Values” in
human life, and will only be cured by a return
to a simple faith in God, and in each other.
Canon Spencer Elliott is coming to conduct a
“Mission” in St Chad’s in February and I
most earnestly ask for the prayers of all
Christians in the parish for its success.
The Annual Sale of Work was opened on 9th
December by the Lady Mayoress who was
thanked for the benefits conferred on the parish
by the gift of Graves’ Park. The sale was
a great success and raised £177/7/- in total.
The congregations on Christmas Day found
the church quietly but tastefully decorated.
The services were well attended and there
was a very happy spirit of “family” worship.
We hope that everyone—faithful and indifferent
alike had a very happy Christmas.
February 1927
MY DEAR FRIENDS,
I trust that there will be a very good attendance
at the Vestry and Parochial Meeting.
Financially, we have nothing to complain
about, having held our own throughout a
very trying year. In other ways we have had
much to be thankful for, and in particular for
the way in which the Sunday School is settling
down to what we trust will prove a period
of solid progress. Mr Addy’s years of
patient work are now yielding fruit under the
capable control of his successor.
The principal event of this month is the
Mission February 8th to 17th to be
conducted by Canon Spencer Elliott. To this
we have looked forward with immense
expectation.
We have prayer for its success, God knows
the extent of the blessing we require and He
is able to answer our prayers. May our faith
be great. Let us pray that the power of the
Holy Spirit may come upon our Missioner,
and that through him many hearts may be
deeply stirred.
The Sunday School celebrated completion of
one year in the New Hall with a special
service. There was a good attendance of
scholars and Rev G.W.Hall, Rector of
Norton, gave the address and spoke
encouragingly of the progress made by St
Chad’s since its formation in 1912.
Martin tried a variety
of methods to avoid
taking the collection
