History of Halloween
By Terann Macrlravey
It?s October! When you think of October, you usually think of Halloween. You may think it's all just
dressing up, getting candy, and attending parties. Little do you know the history behind this
spooky holiday.
Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic festival Samhain (sow-in). The Celts lived 2,000 years
ago where Ireland is today. They celebrated their new year on November 1st. This marked the
day that summer and the harvest ended. The Celts believed that on the night before the new
year, October 31st, the ?boundary? between the worlds of the dead and living would be blurred.
This is when they celebrated Samhain, a day that the dead would return to earth. The Celts
thought that the spirits would damage crops and cause other troubles to the living. However,
they thought the spirits actually helped the Druids, or Celtic priests, predict the future. The Celts
depended on the priests to make predictions for the cold, harsh winter ahead, so they celebrated
this day, and Halloween was born. To celebrate Samhain, the Celts would light bonfires and dress
up in costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. Samhain also included ceremonies, feasts and
gatherings with family, friends and the spiritual community.
In the eighth century, Pope Gregory designated November 1st as All Saints?Day. This was a day to
honor all saints and martyrs. The evening before was then known as Hallow?s Eve. This is because
All Saints?Day is also commonly called All Hallows?Day. The word ?hallow? means holy or
sanctified. People used to celebrate this the same way the Celts celebrated Samhain. They
celebrated with feasts and gatherings to honor all of the saints and martyrs.
Over the years, Halloween has evolved into a community-based holiday. Now-a-days, people
dress up in costumes and go around begging for candy. This tradition didn?t start until the
middle-ages. Children and sometimes poor adults would go around and beg for food or money in
exchange for songs and prayers. This tradition eventually evolved into the annual occurrence we
call trick or treating.
No Boos for Hallow een
By Andrew Fanton
Halloween is a holiday known by many people all over the country. Some people love it, while others
hate it. It?s celebrated on or near October 31st. The people that hate it think that Halloween is one of the worst
holidays in the year. They say things such as ?It?s very unhealthy to give kids that much candy.? Others would
argue that it?s not as unhealthy as it may seem because of the amount of calories they burn walking or
running. There are a lot of pros for Halloween that other holidays don?t have.
Unlike holidays such as Christmas and Easter, Halloween isn?t a huge holiday celebrated for religious reasons.
Instead it is a holiday that celebrates horror and fun. Most holidays should be known for celebrating fun;
however, very few are. Christmas is known by most for the presents everyone receives, and Easter is known for
its Easter egg hunts. Because Halloween focuses on fun and people enjoying themselves.
Christmas and Easter bring happiness to young children, but often for the wrong reasons. Many
teachers in lower grades have problems with kids not focusing on their work because they?re too busy talking
to their friends about what they got for Christmas or Easter. This is obviously a negative of those two holidays.
This happens with Halloween, too, but it?s not as extreme. This is because students don?t get a day off unlike
Christmas and Easter where there are breaks long enough for kids to develop a lot of stories. This means that
there is only a very limited amount of stories that kids have to tell.
Halloween is also easy for adults to participate in. Unlike Christmas and Easter, adults don?t have to
figure out what their children like or what other children like. They can just go out and buy a variety of candies,
so if one trick or treater doesn?t like one of the candies, they can pick a different one. Also, anyone handing out
candy doesn?t have to do much; in fact, they can just set out a bowl of candy out on their doorstep.
People may not get great and expensive gifts on Halloween, but it?s the small ideas like talking to friends
and neighbors that count. Many people neglect the importance of Halloween in small neighborhoods and large
cities alike. In small towns, Halloween encourages kids to interact with others that they wouldn?t normally talk
to. On the other hand, in large cities, Halloween encourages kids to meet new people that they?ve never even
seen before.
A survey was conducted among students to see what their favorite holiday is. The survey found that
approximately 66.7% of students prefer Christmas over any other holiday. While that may be, it is most likely
because of the aforementioned presents. However, the survey also shows that in a tie for second, Halloween
and Thanksgiving are preferred by 7.9% of students. Halloween may not be the most liked holiday there is or
even close to it, but that doesn?t mean it can?t be the best. It?s better for kids, parents, and even teachers. Just
because it encourages kids to go out and collect candy just for themselves doesn?t make it bad. Also, if
Halloween is so bad, why is it a long standing and thriving holiday to this day?
Halloween is a strange but amazing holiday. Children dressed as monsters run in the streets at
night, visiting strangers houses and begging for candy. Parties are thrown in honor of the day where
the dead are closest to the living. People dress as monsters and princesses to amuse themselves. It is
one of the weirdest holidays we celebrate. Candy, late nights, hanging with friends, parties, haunted
houses, all of these make Halloween fun and awesome. But what the people love most is costumes. It
may seem strange wanting to dress like something you?re not and parading around. But it is one of
America's favorites.
Halloween is thought to have originated at a Celtic festival in Ireland called Samhain. From at
least the 16th century, the festival included people going house to house in costume or disguise,
which they called mumming and guising. It is thought to have started as a tradition where people
were impersonating the Aos Si, or souls of the dead, and wanted to receive offerings, such as sweets,
on the dead's behalf. Impersonating a dead soul was thought to protect one from ghosts or demons.
It was also thought that receiving gifts to give to the souls of the dead would grant them good fortune
in the upcoming winter.
In some places children would dress as demons or blacken their body with ashes from a sacred
bonfire and go house to house giving misfortune to those who did not welcome them. In other parts
of Ireland a man dressed as a white horse would lead children home to home reciting verses, some of
which had pagan overtones, in exchange for food. In Wales men dressed as fearsome demons. And in
other parts of Europe, people cross-dressed.
In 1911 the first written record of Americans starting this practice arose. A newspaper in
Kingston, Ontario, reported children in costumes running around the neighborhood. In the early 19th
century, the holiday was celebrated with parades featuring costumes. The holiday was also less a
public holiday was more focused on private adult celebrations with lots of liquor. Only children were
expected to celebrate in the festivities. Costumes were handmade at home until the 1930s when A.S
Fischbach, Ben Cooper Inc. and other companies started mass producing Halloween costumes.
Unlike the traditional supernatural themed costumes (werewolves, vampires, demons,
monsters etc.) the newer costumes for children are much different. Girls costumes are now
princesses, animals, flowers, superheros and other cute things as boys stay with the traditional
monsters or superheroes. But women (and sometimes men) have over sexualized Halloween.
Substituting cute or scary costumes for revealing, skimpy and sometimes offensive costumes. But
Halloween will still live on in our hearts.
Here is a survey of the Knoch middle school costumes.
DIY Hallow een Dessert Tut orial
Quinn Hughes
Candy is great, but if you really wanted to spookify your Halloween dessert, try making this
simple Oreo pop. Turning an ordinary Oreo into a Jack Skellington pop is a fun and delicious
new way to enjoy Halloween desserts.
Ingredients/supplies needed:
12 Oreos
1 large bag of white chocolate chips
Black Edible Marker or a Decorating Gel
Small black ribbon
Cake pop sticks
A large bowl
Baking sheet
Foil
Small Glass
Instructions:
Step 1: In the microwave, heat white chocolate chips in the bowl until completely melted (about 40 seconds), then
pour into a glass.
Step 2: Add a drop of the melted chocolate to the end of a cake pop stick. Insert the stick into the cream filling part
of each oreo. (Insert the stick about halfway into the oreo cream filling).
Step 3: Cover the baking sheet with foil. Lay oreo pops onto covered baking sheet. Stick into freezer for about 1
minute. This step will help keep the oreos from moving on the stick.
Step 4: Remove oreo pops from freezer. Dip the pops in the white chocolate one at a time. After the pop is
completely covered in chocolate, tap the stick on the side of the cup to get rid of the excess
chocolate.
Step 5: Place the pops back onto the foil lined baking sheet. Then place in the fridge for about 5 minutes. After the
chocolate is hard, remove from the fridge.
Step 6: Using the edible marker/ decorating gel, draw Jack Skellington?s face onto each oreo pop. Lastly, using the
small black ribbon, tie on his bow to finish the pops.
Step 7: Enjoy this adorable and spooktacular Jack Skellington treat!
Decisions, Decisions, Is Our School Making t he Right Ones?
I st art ed Friday t he 7t h of Oct ober, and w ent around t he school gat hering inform at ion (aka I w ent t o
at Knoch, w ere m ore t han happy t o give m e som e inform at ion. I st art ed by asking a broad t opic quest ion,
?What do you t hink of t he recent school board?s decisions, m eaning anyt hing t hey've done recent ly?? and t he
answ ers w ere m oderat ely t he sam e: ?Trash.? How ever, as w e got int o m ore quest ions t hat w ere based off
single choices, such as how and w here t he school is spending m oney or w hat t hey're doing in concerns of
bullying, t here w as som e favor on t he school board?s side.
The second quest ion w as about t he m usical program . Recent ly I?ve heard som e rum ors about t he art s
m usic st udent s used t o have sm all classes about t hirt y m inut es som ew here in t he day, once a w eek. This
confident ly. Now , how ever, t he school board is t aking out t hat t im e and m aking t he groups bigger in order t o
give t he kids m ore t im e for educat ion. It m ay not seem like t hat big a difference, but w it h bigger groups and
less t im e, it ?s going t o hurt confidence in st udent s. This is going t o hurt m usical educat ion in t he long run.
?True, t hat it is bet t er t o use t his t im e for educat ion,? Moore said, w hen asked about t he t opic. Educat ion is
im port ant , for kids and for school, w it hout it w e can't get good jobs or a subst ant ial am ount of m oney.
How ever, Rodgers gave a very good reason w hy slow ly t aking out t he art program m ay not be such a good
idea: ?We have t o give st udent s t he chance t o becom e a funct ional part of societ y.? Som e people just aren't
The t hird quest ion w as very narrow and one-sided: ?What w ould you say about t he snapchat filt er??
Snapchat is a new and rising popular social m edia app. One of it s feat ures is all kinds of filt ers t hat can m ake
it . For exam ple, aft er t he foot ball or soccer t eam w on a gam e, t hey w ould t ake a pict ure w it h t he filt er. In
som e sense it does bring a feeling of pride.
Som e colleges require five years of a language, and w e don't even offer t hat anym ore since French is gone.
Learning languages is a very im port ant part of our societ y. The w orld is enorm ous, and t here are hundreds of
languages out t here. If som eone w ant ed t o learn French now , t hey w ould have t o get a privat e t ut or, w hich
Hom ew ork Can Be Your Enem y and Your Best Friend!
By: Nichole Sico
Hom ew ork is assigned t o everybody at least once in t heir lifet im es.
People eit her love or hat e hom ew ork. Most people hat e hom ew ork and t hink
it ?s a w ast e of t im e. Ot hers, on t he ot her hand, believe hom ew ork can be
beneficial. Teachers assign hom ew ork for pract ice and t o st udy, but t hey
som et im es go a lit t le t oo crazy. They end up assigning an ext rem e am ount of
hom ew ork t hat t hey expect st udent s t o do in a single night ! Hom ew ork can be
very st ressful, so should hom ew ork be assigned or not ?
Many st udent s get assigned a lot of hom ew ork. The st udent s pret t y
m uch get hom ew ork in every class, every single day of t he w eek. It ?s
ridiculous because w e are t rapped in t his ?prison? for 7 hours a day, t hen w e
go hom e and have 4 hours of hom ew ork t o do in about 2 hours. Plent y of
st udent s have m any project s and hard t est s t o st udy for on t op on t heir
hom ew ork. Most st udent s part icipat e in school sport s and clubs, and even do
sport s and clubs out side of school. I know a lot of st udent s at Knoch Middle
School, w ho do sport s or clubs for t he school and st ill do part i out side of
school, t oo. The school t ries t o prom ot e school sport s and clubs, but t hey
shouldn?t if t hey are going t o give t he st udent s so m uch hom ew ork. We can?t
even part icipat e in t he sport s or clubs if w e have so m uch hom ew ork.
Many st udent s w ast e t heir free t im e on hom ew ork. We get assigned a
lot of hom ew ork and w e have t o do t hem on t op of w hat w e w ant t o do in our
free t im e. It ?s sickening because w e have t o spend our free t im e doing
hom ew ork. Now a days children are t rapped inside school, and t hen w hen
t hey get hom e, t hey are t rapped inside doing hom ew ork. It ?s sad because t hey
don?t even get enough t im e t o go run out side and t urn off t heir energy or
relax. This explains w hy som e st udent s are so row dy w hen t hey are in school.
Fam ilies aren?t as close as t hey use t o be because t hey don?t have any t im e t o
sit dow n, relax and play gam es or w at ch TV because t hey?re spending all t hat
and w e don?t have t im e t o spend t o t oget her. We only have t im e on t he
w eekends.
Then, aft er t he children get hom e from t heir act ivit y and do hom ew ork
it ?s like close t o m idnight w hen t hey finish. Som e st udent s don?t even get t o
finish t heir hom ew ork because it 's so lat e. Then t he next day t hey have t o
w ake up so early and have t o go back t o t he school. St udent s eit her get in
20

t rouble because t hey didn?t finish it or t hey didn?t do it at all because t hey
w ere procrast inat ing about t heir hom ew ork since t hey have so m uch.
St udent s have lives out side of school, so w hy should t hey have t o spend it
doing hom ew ork? Most st udent s end up get t ing st ressed because t hey have
so m uch going on bet w een hom ew ork, act ual school, and life.
School is ext rem ely fun ot her t hen having t o do hom ew ork. You have
classes w it h your friends. They can m ake learning easier w hen you are having
fun w it h your friends.
Hom ew ork is also good. Trust m e w hen I say t hat . I know it has kind of
How t o have a Successful School Year!!
By: Laura Greb
Being successful can be looked upon in m any different w ays. Being successful
m eans t hat a person accom plished t he goals t hat he or she set for him self or
herself. Set t ing m any goals and w orking hard is being successful every day. In
order t o have success,st udent s have t o be m ot ivat ed and have t hat drive t o go out
of t he w ay t o reach t heir goals. Goals can also be accom plished by t aking advice
from ot her people and learning from som ebody else?s m ist akes. Too m any people
allow ot hers t o define success for t hem , w hich is t he result of w hy so m any people
fail t o achieve success for t hem selves. In order for st udent s t o have success in
school, t hey have t o creat e healt hy habit s t o follow every day. St udent s also
should be at t ent ive t o t heir school w ork and m anage t heir t im e w isely. Here are
som e helpful hint s t o follow along t he pat h of success.
1. St udent s can have a successful school school year by creat ing healt hy habit s.
One healt hy habit is t o have a good m orning rout ine. When st udent s goes t o bed
at night , t hey should be get t ing 8 t o 10 hours of sleep each night . As m iddle school
st udent s, w e t end t o st ay up lat e because w e are busy on our phones a lot of
t im es. To avoid st aying up lat e, st udent s could charge t heir phone at night aw ay
from t heir bed or even out of t heir bedroom .
Anot her healt hy habit is t o eat a healt hy breakfast . Most people do not eat
anyt hing for breakfast and t hen t hey are t ired t he rest of t he day because t heir
body does not have energy.
Also anot her healt hy habit t hat m ost people do not t hink of is alw ays t hinking
posit ively. If som eone is never happy, t hen t hey are not going t o enjoy school at all.
A lot of people t hink t hat school is not t he m ost excit ing t hing in t he w orld, but if
st udent s have a posit ive at t it ude about it , t hen t he school year w ill be m uch m ore
enjoyable.
2. St udent s can have a successful school year by being at t ent ive t o t heir school
w ork.
To be at t ent ive m eans t hat one pays close at t ent ion t o som et hing or is alert . A
st udent can be at t ent ive t o t heir school in m any different w ays. One can be
at t ent ive in school by paying at t ent ion in t heir classes and t aking good not es t o
help t hem st udy. Being at t ent ive in class also m eans part icipat ing in classes by
22

answ ering quest ions and st aying involved in class conversat ions.
Anot her t ip t hat st udent could follow is care about t heir grades. St udent s?
grades are very im port ant w hen it com es t o going t o college. If one does
not have good grades, t hen he or she w ill not get accept ed t o a college and
t hen w ill never be able t o get a job lat er in life. If st udent s are not going t o
at t end college, t heir grades st ill m at t er and w ill help t hem be m ore
successful in life.
3. St udent s w ho m anage t heir t im e w isely w ill have a successful school
year..
Managing t im e does not m ean t hat t hey should spend every m inut e of
t heir life st udying or doing school w ork. It m eans part icipat ing in ot her
act ivit ies t hat t hey enjoy. For exam ple, on t he w eekends st udent s should
set aside som e t im e t o hang out w it h t heir friends or do som et hing t hat
t hey enjoy.
Anot her t hing t hat st udent s should do t o m anage t im e is t o avoid
procrast inat ion. Procrast inat ing is a very com m on t hing t hat st udent s do
w hen t hey are in m iddle school. To avoid it , st udent s should st art st udying
or working on t he project as soon as t hey get t he assignm ent inst ead of
w ait ing unt il t he last m inut e.
In conclusion, st udent s can have a successful school year by creat ing
healt hy habit s, being at t ent ive t o school w ork, and m anaging t heir t im e
w isely. School can be a st ressful t im e, but if st udent s t hink posit ively, t hen
t hey could have a fun-filled educat ional year. Success also requires
pat ience and m ot ivat ion. Using t hese t ools w ill pay off in t he end if t hey
are used consist ent ly.
Clubs and sports are a great way to meet different people
and learn new material. It is important to take part in these
during middle school years because clubs provide people with
an extra curricular enrichment that can help you during your
daily life. These fellowships promote awareness about certain
topics or ideas that that are being discussed, and they are a fun
way to expand your knowledge. They also look great on a
resume. Sports are a really good time as well. Playing sports
allows athletes of all skill levels to interact with other
competitors and come together as a team. Players can improve
their skills and get exercise. Joining a club or team will be
something you won?t regret!
A Sport or a Club?
By: Nichole Sico
Cheerleaders are peppy, loud, and energetic. Cheerleaders
spend hours practicing and learning their cheers and half time
routine. They work really hard to perfect everything. Cheer is
really hard. Everyone thinks it?s so easy. Most people think that
cheerleaders just dress up in little cute uniforms and stand on the
sidelines and scream words while moving their arms.
Cheerleaders are very dedicated to what they do. Most people
don?t realize how hard it really is, and should be considered at
sport not a club. The school considers is a club. Many people
think cheer is amazing and really insteresting.
Cheer should be considered a sport because it?s really
exhausting. Cheerleaders have to spend hours conditioning. They
have to do push-up and sit-up. It takes lots of energy to do to
them. Cheer involves many trys to get a stunt, defintly when its a
new stunt.
It is time consuming just like an other sport. Cheerleaders
spend hours practicing and learn everything. Cheer is hard work
and takes dedication. This hard work and dedication is needed
when you also play a sport. If they don?t try hard to get a stunt,
they may end up dropping the girl, and that?s scary. Just like
football, soccer, basketball, or volleyball, they have to work
together to succeed, and absolutely have to do that with
cheerleading because if you don?t it won?t look fantastic when you
perform. They have to be very energetic because you have to be
positive and cheer on the school. Cheerleaders also have to work
on being loud and self-confident. If they aren?t loud, then they
can?t be heard. They also have to have self-confidence to perform
in front of many people and don?t screw up .
26

Cheerleaders also have to be responsible and remember all
their cheers and dances. They have to remember about 200
cheers and learn them all. They also have to perfect them.
Cheerleaders have to be able to speak clearly and spell, so they
don?t mess up. Cheerleader have to be flexible and strong. They
have to jump really high, which takes a lot of leg strength. As well
as leg strength, they have to have arm strength. They are
throwing and catching the flyer. Cheerleading is just as hard or
even harder than regular sports.
School cheerleaders don?t practice as hard as football
players do, but they still train hard. Cheerleaders parctice so
hard that they end up injuring them self. They work so hard to
get stunts and not to drop anyone. They are throwing then up
and flipping in the air. Cheerleaders also have to work hard on
new trick like tumbling. Perfesionals have hours apon hours of
practice. When they spend months working just on one routine
that is about 3-5 minutes to only preform it once, then it?s
considered a sport.
Cheer is just as hard as an other sport, but any athlete
probably has it harder. Cheerleaders should be credited more
for what they do. Just because it isn?t a sport to doesn?t mean
cheerleaders don?t work hard. People actually think cheer
leaders are amazing because they do all these cool things that
they can't even image doing.
College Football Survey
It?s College Football season! So which team
is Knoch Middle School?s favorite? The
results show that the winner is Pitt!
27

K noch 2016 M iddle School Cross Country
K aylynn Brumbaugh
Potential--that's the word I would use to describe the cross
country teams this year.
Knoch had a reasonably good year; the odds are normally
stacked against them because of their small size, but that didn't
stop them.
The Girls Team: Reasonably, they had no chance of winning.
Statistically speaking, they had no chance of winning because they
didn't even have a full team. Therefore, it was impossible to win a
race, but that didn't stop them from running. When racing against
other schools, a team must have at least five runners to place;
however, Knoch only had four. One more runner, and their year
might have been just as successful as the boys. But that didn't stop
them from still giving opponents a run for their money. They may
have been small but they were fast enough to put up a quite a fight.
Other schools were always amazed by the fact that they were even
running. No one expected the small team from Knoch to almost
take them out. By the time that the North Allegheny Invitational
arrived, other schools had heard of their tiny, spitfire team, and
knew not to underestimate them. The team?s strategy was to stay
as close together as possible. They?re strong as individuals, but it's
been proven that running in large groups gives runners more
energy, so they tried their best to stick together. The top runner,
Maddie Loos, didn't medal, but she took a place in the thirties,
followed close behind by the second runner. The girls team always
stayed close together, and finished within a couple places of each
other. The team was made up of two seventh graders, and two
eighth graders, who plan to move onto varsity.
28

The Boys Team: Last year the boys team had trouble securing wins
with only a few 8th grade boys and a surplus of young 7th grade
unbridled talent. Now our 7th graders have made the 8th grade jump,
and there's no gap to close. It's really incredible to watch them run, eyes
fierce, faces set. If you've ever seen a top runner, they look entirely
exhausted, but their eyes are livid with feeling. Their top runner Daniel
Deal was always ahead of the others, but second runner Luke
Klutschkowski was normally close behind or right on his leader's heels
for the second half of the season. Their third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and
seventh runners shifted around from person to person, meaning that
they were always in a different order. It depended on how that runner
felt and the difficulty of the course. However, that pack always stayed
close together. They ended the season quite well, Deal taking a 6th
place at NA invitationals, and Klutschkowski snagging sixteenth. If they
keep that up, they could make it to states.
The problem with the cross country team currently is that they
don't have enough runners. Running is individual, but it's also a team
sport, and they need each other to win. It's all about points. If the top
five runners combined scores are lower than the other teams, then the
team has won, but that only works if the team has at least five top
runners. Pretty soon the seniors will be gone, and others will have to
step up. However, what would happen if there's no one there to take
their place? Cross Country is an addictive and extraordinary sport, the
power you feel, and the adrenaline coursing through your veins is like
nothing else you?ve ever felt. I encourage people highly to join. Running
does something to you that once you start you can't stop. It's a gift and a
curse, sometimes you have to miss other important things for a race or
a practice, but there's no place we?d rather be. And even if there's only
three people to a team, they?ll still run because they're so in love that
they can't seem to stop.
History of the Steelers
By: Ian Robb
It?s Pittsburgh?s most well-known professional team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Did you know
that the Steelers are the seventh oldest football team in the National Football League(NFL)? The
team was founded by Arthur J. Rooney on July 8, 1933, by the name ?Pittsburgh Pirates? to honor the
baseball team.
Arthur Rooney is the founder of the Steelers. Rooney was born and raised in Pittsburgh and
was a good athlete. He played football for Notre Dame, baseball for the Boston Red Sox, and was
also invited to join the 1920 Olympic boxing team. He loved sports so much that he became an
organizer and promoter and founded the Hope-Harvey Football Club, Pittsburgh's only semi-pro
team, when he was a teenager. This semi-pro team was the start of the Steelers.
The Hope-Harvey Football Club mostly played at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh. Exposition Park
was located near the Allegany River, approximately in the same area as Three Rivers Stadium was
built many years later. Although football was big in Pittsburgh, they did not have a professional
team due to the laws in Pennsylvania that prohibited football to be played on Sundays because
Sunday was the Sabbath, and no work was to be done on Sunday. In May 1933, Rooney applied for a
franchise with the NFL because the restrictive laws in Pennsylvania were being repealed. His
application was granted, and the Pittsburgh Professional Football Club Inc. joined the NFL. Rooney
named the team the ?Pirates? after the baseball team and the NFL made them an official team in
1993.
According to Wikipedia, the next four decades were rough for the ?Pirates? football team. They
had a winning record only eight times in their first 39 NFL seasons and never came close to a
championship. During the Great Depression, Rooney said the team lost over $10,000. To draft
players, they had bidding wars. This method made it harder for less established clubs to get good
players. Rooney said that the top finishers should have restrictions to their player choices.. This
idea eventually created the NFL draft that came into effect in 1936. The ?Pirates? continued playing
until 1940 when Arthur decided that they needed a name change. Arthur used the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette to run a contest to find a new name for the team. The name ?Steelers? won. This name
was perfect because it referenced the city's long history of steel production. No one knows who
deserves the credit for the name, but the name won regardless and still remains today. Soon after
Rooney finally gave in to Alexis Thomson?s offer and sold the team due to the poor eight years that
the team had. Rooney then invested in his friend Bell?s team, ?The Eagles.? The two teams worked
together and distributed the players equally by talent among the teams. Thompson later renamed
his team The Iron Men in 1941. However, Rooney began to regret selling the Steelers and Thomson
wanted to move the team nearer to his New York home. Rooney made a deal that he and Bell would
move their Eagles to Pittsburgh and Thomson?s team could relocate to Philadelphia, which was
closer to his home. Thomson agreed to the deal, and Rooney and Bell?s Eagles became the
36

Steelers, and Thomson?s Iron Men became the Eagles. This deal was one of the most
unusual swaps in football history.
World War II had a big impact on the NFL. The Steelers decided to draft many
married players, hoping that they wouldn?t be drafted for the military. During this time,
the Steelers also went through a couple of head coaches. The team still had a losing
streak, and they weren?t looking too good. Although the Steelers tried, the team still
lost some key players to the military. The next few years for the Steelers had lots of
ups and downs.
Then, the Steelers finished first in the league but lost in the playoffs to the Miami
Dolphins in 1973. This was still a great game because of the close score and high
intensity of the game. In 1974, the Steelers won their first Super Bowl against the
Minnesota Vikings. The score was 16-6. After 42 years, they finally did it! The next year,
they did it again and had an even better season, ending with another Super Bowl win
against the Dallas Cowboys in a tight game that ended 21-17. The Steelers didn?t make
the playoffs for two years until 1978 when they won their third Super Bowl. This game
was against the Dallas Cowboys and ended with a score of 35-31. The following year,
they won their fourth Super Bowl in 1979 against the Los Angeles Rams. The game
ended with a score of 31-19. The Steelers were in decline and the next time they made
a Super Bowl appearance wasn't until 1995. However, they lost this game to the Dallas
Cowboys with a score of 27-17. Up until this point, all of the Steelers games have been
at Three Rivers Stadium. The 2000 season was their last season playing there.
In 2001, they opened the stadium we know and love today, Heinz Field. The next
few seasons were rough until 2005 when the Steelers made another Super Bowl
appearance. The game was great and the Steelers pulled out a win against the
Seahawks with a score of 21-10. This Super Bowl tied the Steelers for most Super Bowl
titles at 5 with the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys. The Steelers didn't
make another Super Bowl appearance until three years later in 2008. The Steelers
faced the Arizona Cardinals. It was a great fought game, ending in a Steeler win to
become the first team ever to win six Super Bowl titles. The Steelers have not won any
more Super Bowls since 2008, but keep rooting for your hometown Pittsburgh
Steelers.
The Consol Energy Cent er or The PPG Paint s Arena
By: Tippy Barnes
The iconic Consol Energy Center (the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey arena)got
a new name, The PPG Paints Arena. The arena was originally named Consol
Energy Center after Consol Energy purchased the naming rights in December
2008. Consol Energy Inc. is an American energy company with interests in coal
and natural gas production headquartered in the suburb of Cecil Township in the
South pointe complex just outside of Pittsburgh. Low coal and natural gas prices
have caused sponsorships to lose money. A gas price slump has Consol Energy
shedding jobs. The name change was an opportunity to make a play for the
multi-million change.
Many people think the name change was a thoughtless idea. Some think
the name PPG Paint Arena is ?stupid.? Although the company was put in a
situation where they had to do something, some people are so used to the
Consol Energy Center that they do not approve of this change. Before the
Pittsburgh Penguins played in the Consol Energy Center, there was the
Civic/Mellon Arena. The Civic/Mellon Arena closed on June 26, 2010. The former
Mellon naming rights expired soon after, and the Penguins and all other events
moved across the street to the new Consol Energy Center. Now the naming
rights expired once again and was changed to what is now the PPG Paints Arena,
which is still hard for some people because it has been the Consol Energy Center
for a long time.
On the other hand, many people think the PPG Paint Arena is a good name
to fit in with the other PPG Paint facilities. The hockey stadium will join the other
PPG-sponsored buildings and attractions such as Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Place.
PPG Industries is an American Fortune 500 company and global supplier of
paints, coatings, specialty materials, chemicals, glass, and fiberglass. David
Morehouse, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Pittsburgh Penguins
stated,?We believe that the partnership will offer exciting opportunities for our
fans as well as employees and customers.? It seems as if people are already used
to the name, so maybe it?s not so bad after all.
So, what do you think: is the PPG Paint Arena a good name?
Evolut ion of Clot hing
By Josie Ansell
For centuries popular trends in the fashion world have made statements, by both females
and males, all the way to 2016. However, something consumers don?t often know is that there is
some history behind some of the most popular clothes in the 21st century fashion market.
Converse, jeans, flannels, and sperrys all are at least half a century old and were made not only just
for fashion but for functionality.
The Converse shoe company was founded in February 1908 by Marquis Mills Converse.
Galoshes, similar to the rubber boot, were the first shoes the company produced. But they started
making the iconic tennis shoe soon after, and in 1917 they were named All-Stars. However, the
All-Stars didn?t become popular until Chuck Taylor (a famous basketball player) started wearing and
selling them in the 1920?s. These trendy shoes are still in style today. The shoe?s smooth tip,
durable rubber soles, and distinct star symbol makes these tennis shoes unmistakable. So, next
time you get a compliment for your ?Chuck Taylor?s,? you know why!
Jeans, unlike converse, were an immediate sell because of their resistance and price. The
cheap material was extremely durable for poor laborers. Jacob Davis partnered with the Levi
Strauss Company to invent the jeans in 1871. In present time, they are much more expensive
($50-70 a pair in popular stores) than the $1.50 (about $25 today) pairs sold in 1885. Today, jeans
are sold in many different styles, such as skinny, bootcut, high-waisted, and distressed.
Flannels, like both jeans and converse, were used solely for its durability. These shirts were
made by the Welsh (an ethnic group native to Wales, Great Britain) in the 1700?s to keep them
warm during labor in cold weather. This affordable and warm apparel quickly became a hit across
Europe. They are still used today in not only plaid but solid colors as well. These shirts are iconic
for fall occasions and perfect for the declining temperatures.
Sperry?s were created in 1935 by sailor and shoe designer Paul A. Sperry. Slipping overboard
while sailing on the Long Island Sound (in the Atlantic Ocean between New York and Rhode Island)
drove him to produce a non-slip boat shoe. The Sperry?s were the first shoe introduced to the
boating and shoe market. In the present, these boat shoes are a comfortable and popular trend on
and off the ocean.
So next time you slip on your converse or button up your flannel, think about the history
behind these trendy clothes, and how crazy it is that these veteran clothings are still in style!
President ial Debat e
By John Mack
The debates are a major part in the presidential election process because they allow for
the public to see the both of the candidates?views on the issues side by side. This is a major
United States topic with the upcoming Presidential Election. A poll conducted showed that
58% of Knoch Middle School students watched the debate.
The first debate, which took place on Monday, September 26, started with both
candidates presenting what they would do as president. Secretary Clinton spoke about how
she is planning to raise taxes on the wealthy to allow for free college. Then, they moved on to
talking about jobs. Mr. Trump discussed how he would tax the companies that moved to
Mexico for selling products from Mexico back to the United States. Due to a lot of quibble
between the candidates, they did not get through a whole lot of information. Mr. Trump said
?Wrong? to Mrs. Clinton every two sentences. There was much hope across the country that
the second debate would provide more answers as they did not answer many of the citizens
questions. It was decided that Hillary Clinton won the first debate because she had better
answers to the questions and did not interrupt the other candidate like Mr. Trump did in this
debate.
The second debate on October 9th, 2016 was considered a win for Donald Trump by
many reporters for more reasons than one. The first major action that Donald Trump did was
invite four of Bill Clinton's accusers. Bill Clinton?s face dropped when he saw them in the
Trump box on TV. Secretary Clinton was trying to compare herself to Abraham Lincoln. Mr.
Trump quickly fired back to that remark. He said, ?Honest Abe, Honest Abe, Honest Abe never
lied. There is a big difference between Abe Lincoln and you (pointing to Hillary Clinton).?
Secretary Clinton just smiled and continued to talk about other topics. Mr. Trump also
provided answers to national security and trade questions. While Mr. Trump won this debate,
he was very critical of the moderator, Martha Raddatz. He at one point started debating
Martha Raddatz, the moderator, about an energy question. Mr. Trump also accused the
moderators of giving Secretary Clinton easier questions than he. The other hot topic of the
debate was Hillary Clinton saying Donald Trump invaded her space. On television it seemed
as if Hillary Clinton invaded Donald Trump?s space, as she kept coming to where his chair was
when she was answering a question. Another popular topic was when Mrs. Clinton said,
?Someone like Donald Trump should not be in charge of the justice systems.? Mr. Trump shot
back, ?Because you would be in jail.? Secretary Clinton just closed her mouth after that
comment. Many more answers were provided than in the first debate.
The third and final debate started with Secretary Clinton pressuring Mr. Trump with a
tough question about his proposed policies. It seemed as if he started off slowly. Twenty
minutes into the debate, Mr. Trump started pressuring Secretary Clinton with questions about
the 33,000 emails that she says she knows nothing about and her policies on immigration.
When discussing immigration, Mrs. Clinton plans to have open borders and to allow many of
the illegal immigrants in the country to stay. While, on the other hand, Mr. Trump plans to

secure our nation's border by deportíng the illegal immigrants, building a wall, and getting rid
of the heroin problem that has been causing problems in many parts of the country. Other
topics were discussed such as whether Vladimir Putin and Russia are behind Wikileaks, a
company that is hacking into the Clinton?s email servers and getting information. They then
release the info to the public. This debate was considered a tie by many news networks. The
second and third debates provided answers that the first debate lacked. This was the last
debate being held before the November 8th election.
Before the election both candidates, begin their final push to the finish. The Trump
campaign has been in Florida and plans to be in Florida a total of eight more times in an effort
to try to win the Sunshine State. The Clinton campaign is making a push in the battleground
state of Pennsylvania. She made a stop recently at Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh.
It should be a close race on November 8th.
President ial Elect ion
By Grant Nether
The race to the election this year has so far been filled with lies, questions, and a very small amount of answers.
The two main candidates Donald Trump (R) and Hillary Clinton (D) have exchanged many words about each other
whether on emails, tax returns, and more. These responses have only lead to disappointment and anger within many
voters.
This year?s polls have been very uncertain. The closest Trump and Clinton have been was July 20 and 21. They
were at a 1% difference during this period of time as stated by Projects.fivethirtyeight.com The two candidates seem
more focused about talking down about one another than pushing their own campaigns. According to
Projects.fivethirtyeight.com, Hillary Clinton, in the polls, is currently 6% above Donald Trump, which could mean her
victory in this election. That?s because of the ending of the election during November 8, 2016. Knoch Middle School,
however, seems very different, if not totally opposite, from the polls with Trump leading by 60% of the votes, other in
2nd with 29% , and Clinton with 1/10 of the votes.
The teamwork of the candidates and their running mates are very crucial to this election. Trump?s vice president
and the 50th governor of Indiana, Mike Pence, often disagree with Trump on certain subjects. For example, Donald
Trump said, ?He and I haven´ t spoken and I disagree? on Pence's speech of Syria. Hillary?s running mate Tim Kaine,
however, said he trusts Hillary. According to www.businessinsider.com, Tim Kaine said, jokingly, ?Other than supervising
attorneys this will be the first time I?ve had a female boss.? The alliance between Kaine and Hillary could help in future
debates or discussions. Some large political figures such as Mitt Romney disagree with what Trump says or does. The
Atlantic states that he had said, ?My conscience won?t allow me to vote for Trump or Clinton?. That is a major problem
in Trump?s campaign because many voters listen to people such as him and other important Republicans.
Trump and Clinton have very different views on many laws put into action. One example is Obamacare. This
insurance aid has caused 9 out of 10 of U.S. citizens to have insurance said by The Washington Post That?s the highest
it?s been in years. There is a bad side. It causes insurance to be hard for many people to afford . Clinton wants to
expand Obamacare in hopes to fix it eventually. Trump, however, wants to decrease its power if not eradicate it in all
because of how corrupt he says the system is. Another issue is gun control. Trump agrees with the right to bear arms,
which is a reason the NRA (National Rifle Association) has endorsed him. He supports the 2nd amendment and wants
to keep guns with good citizens. Hillary Clinton, however, strongly supports gun control in hopes of causing less gun
violence. Their views on these subjects, and others such as these, will determine who becomes this nation?s next
president.
This election is crucial for the nation?s future. The fate of the United States is at hand, so it?s very important to
support your favored nominee in the election. So whether you want to ?Make America Great Again? or be ?Stronger
Together,? support your candidate with pride!
was near the Windward Islands (a group of islands in the SE West Indies) on
September 28, 2016. According to the Weather Channel, when it reached the
Caribbean, it was then classified as a hurricane and only got worse from there. It
reached peak intensity of 160 mph winds and was labeled a Category 5 hurricane
and was classified as that from September 30 until October. In Florda,on October
More Sleep Is Bet t er
By: Anna Peart
Do you get enough sleep? If not, it can cause lots of problems. Getting lots of sleep is very
important, especially in your teenage years when you are growing. During this time you need to
get as much sleep as possible. While you are asleep, ?important body functions and brain
activity occur,? according to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF). Not sleeping can be very
harmful to a teen?s body, and performance in school may even decrease. Teenagers are
generally pretty moody with all the hormones flaring, why would they want to make themselves
even more moody by not getting enough sleep? Sleep is just as important as the water you
drink, the food you eat, and the air you breathe. Getting sleep can help you manage the stress
of being a teen.
Did you know, according to the National Sleep Foundation, that teens need about 8-10 hours of
sleep each night to function? It is important to go to bed early, especially on school nights. You
might think that staying up at night is not a big deal, but it can drastically affect your daily life.
The (NSF) says, ?Not getting enough sleep can limit your ability to learn, listen, concentrate, and
solve problems.? If experts think it is important, shouldn?t you?
Loss of sleep can cause you to even forget things you normally would not forget. These
include: names, homework, numbers, and dates with special people in your life. Forgetting
these simple things can cause some issues. You?re having a conversation with your best friend
and you forget something very important they told you the day before. They get mad and now
you are in a fight with your best friend. Another example: You?re talking with your mom or dad
and they are telling you to go do something like chores. You are so tired that you aren?t paying
attention and didn?t hear what they told you to do, so you don?t do it. Now you end up getting
in trouble for not paying attention and forgetting to do your chores. You wouldn't want that
would you?
Not getting enough sleep can actually make you more prone to pimples, too! The absence of
sleep can lead to acne and other skin problems. Nobody likes acne, so why get more of it just
because you want to stay up late and get in a few more episodes of your favorite show on
Netflix or play videos games with your buddies? Less sleep can make you want to eat unhealthy
foods and more of them, which can lead to weight gain. Some unhealthy foods can contribute
to the acne, too.
48

If you don?t get enough sleep, the National Sleep Foundation has some suggestions to improve
your sleep.
Take some naps! They can help pick you up if you are tired and need to wake yourself up.
Keeping your room cool, quiet, and dark will help.
In the morning, let in the bright sunlight to signal your body to wake up.
Caffeine close to bedtime can affect your sleep, so steer clear of coffee, tea, soda, and chocolate
late in the day and towards bedtime.
Stick to the same bedtime and wake up time so your sleep schedule stays consistent. This will
make you feel less tired since your body will have a pattern to get used to.
Don?t leave your homework until last minute.
Try to stay away from the TV, computer, and phone an hour before you go to bed.
Doing calm and quiet activities like reading a book or listening to some music before you go to
bed will make it much more easy to fall asleep.
Teens encounter problems when they have to get up for school. Most of you probably need a
parent or an alarm clock to wake you up for school, and you usually aren?t in the best mood. I
bet you are sometimes sleepy during the day and can?t pay attention in class and have a hard
time focusing. This can cause stress because you don?t get their homework done and are not
getting the best grades in school. This means that you cannot do your best in school and
cannot reach your full potential. Getting sleep is very, very, very important! You require much
more sleep than others because you are at an important developing stage of your development
and growth time in your life. There are many things that keep you from getting the sleep that
you desperately need. These include busy schedules, active social lives, and many growing and
body changes. It is important for you to work around these things and get as much sleep as
possible. When you are home, get some sleep!
Fine Dining
By: Natalie Brands
Have you ever really wanted to have a nice dinner out but you didn?t know where to eat? Well,
struggle no more! The Monterey Bay Fish Grotto and Evolution Grille are two very different but
delicious choices in Western Pennsylvania.
The Monterey Bay Fish Grotto is an expensive, yet premium restaurant with delicious food set at
the top of Mount Washington. It is known for its fantastic view of Pittsburgh skyline, wide range of
food options, great service, wonderful seafood, notable wine list, high prices, and valet parking.
Overall, The Monterey Bay Fish Grotto is rated very high with a tremendous 4.6 out of 5. With a
rating of 4.5, The Monterey Bay Fish Grotto has fantastic food. The service is very attentive and rates
4.6 as well. With the great atmosphere, the ambiance of The Monterey Bay Fish Grotto comes out
with a towering 4.7. As good as all the food is, the price of it all is outrageous. The value is a 4.0
($$$$). Currently a steak is about $60. WIth a moderate noise level, The Monterey Bay Fish Grotto is
a delicious option, but should only be recommended for very important events. If you ever have the
chance and the reason, I would recommend stopping by for a delicious meal! The Monterey Bay Fish
Grotto is very well known for its delicious crab cakes; however, all of the food there is worth trying.
Although The Monterey Bay Fish Grotto is very good, Evolution Grille is much more reasonable for a
meal and is much closer in Sarver, PA. Evolution Grille is the perfect place for a great meal. Whether
you are having dinner with your family or are there for a date, Evolution Grille is the place to be.
Overall, Evolution Grille is rated well with a 4.5. With delicious food and a price range of $11-$30($$),
it has been accepted happily by the surrounding area. With good service, average noise level, and a
trendy ambiance, Evolution Grille is a great restaurant for families, business and friends. After many
delicious meals here, I still love the seared scallops. Every night the chef makes a different flavor of
scallops, and every night you will be blown away.
Even though The Monterey Bay Fish Grotto is very delicious, with it?s pricey food and far location, I
would have to say that Evolution Grille is a better all-around restaurant. With much more reasonable
prices and a wide range of delicious food, Evolution Grille comes out on top. If you?re ever in Sarver,
PA, stop by Evolution Grille for a meal you will never forget!
Bohemian Rhapsody Review
By: Suzanne Oswald
53
Recently the popular film Suicide Squad has been in the media frequently, and
not only because of its star-studded cast. The movie is also known for its fantastic
soundtrack. One of those songs is ?Bohemian Rhapsody? by Panic! At the Disco. If you
know anything about classic rock, you know that the original song was by Queen, and
Panic! remade it for this movie. It came out this year on July 31,almost 40 years after
the original. Panic! At the Disco has won 8 awards, but still, many ponder a question:
Which band did it better?
While people usually stay with the classics, Panic! did a fantastic job of capturing
the retro sound while simultaneously adding a modern touch. This could, in turn,
change some people?s opinions.
At the beginning, the new version sounds almost identical to the older one, which can
be very confusing at first. Panic!?s harm ony is very similar to Queen?s in many ways;
that?s why they sound so
similar at first. Although as the
song progresses, you can
hear the difference in the bands?
lead singers Brendon Urie
and Freddie Mercury.
Throughout the entire
new version, you also hear more
electronically generated noises that the 70?s didn?t have
when the original came out.
For example, towards the end
they use a synthesizer, and it
is very obvious. This came as a
surprise because the song is
very well done, and adding this
momentarily made it sound
very tacky. The rest of the song
does, however, make up for it. The breakdown-type part at the end was fantastically
done, and the guitars sounded superb! This was the perfect part to ease all the rock
fans that were listening to the song . Compared to the original, this particular part
could even be better than the old.
Now we get to the end of the song. The ending is one of the most memorable
parts because Queen (original) fades out in this eerie, unique way that adds to the
effect of the entire piece. Panic! does a wonderful job of capturing this eerie ending
and fades out, perfectly ending the song.
Overall, the new version of the song was not done halfway. Panic! At The Disco
did a very good job of remaking it without ruining it like other groups have done in the
past (example: Purple Rain by Prince redone by Dwight Yoakam). I feel as though
Queen would approve of their song. This, however, does not mean that I like the new
version better; I will always be a person that sticks to the classics!

Divergent : Book Review
Divergent is a series by author Veronica Roth. The books are beautifully
written and reflect what society might be like in the future. It contains tons of
action, adventure, and a little bit of romance. The story will keep you in
suspense and wanting more.
Beatrice Prior is a very quiet and shy girl in the beginning. When she turns
sixteen, she is finally old enough to pick which faction she will be part of. There
are five factions: Dauntless, Candor, Amity, Erudite, and Abnegation. It is a
choice that will change her life. She grew up in the Abnegation faction, where
everyone must be completely selfless and wear the same gray outfit every day.
But there?s something different about her that no one knows except her and a
lady named Tory. She is Divergent. That means she doesn?t actually belong to
any particular faction. They are usually killed because they can?t be brainwashed
like everyone else. That?s why she must keep it a secret.
Beatrice decides to be part of the Dauntless faction. The faction is
dedicated to courage, toughness, bravery, and fearlessness. When she joins, she
decides to change her image. She cuts her hair and tells everyone she meets
that her name is Tris. The events that happen in this book force Tris to be bold
and strong. She has to be brave and go out of her comfort zone many times. By
the end of the book, she is a completely different person. But there is a twist at
the end of the last book that you would never expect. You?ll have to read the
book to find out what it is.
My opinion of this book is that it?s one of my favorites. It?s hard to put
down until you finish it. Even though it?s kind of like a different version of the
Hunger Games, it?s still very interesting. It might even be a little better. I would
definitely give it a five out of five stars rating. The characters are very relatable.
Their personalities are easy to fall in love with. And the action will keep you on
the edge of your seat. Veronica Roth?s style of writing is something I really love.
It?s very bold and inspires the readers. I bet you would rate it five out of five
stars, too, after reading the books.
