and Hurricane Matthew economic damage nears $6 billion - USA Today
From September 28 through October 9, Hurricane Matthew swept from the
Caribbean all the way into North Carolina. The US knew that this storm was
coming, but we never knew that it was going to be as bad as it was. At first it
looked like it was nothing, but the storm was then labeled a tropical storm when it
was near the Windward Islands (a group of islands in the SE West Indies) on
September 28, 2016. According to the Weather Channel, when it reached the
Caribbean, it was then classified as a hurricane and only got worse from there. It
reached peak intensity of 160 mph winds and was labeled a Category 5 hurricane
and was classified as that from September 30 until October. In Florda,on October
7, a peak surge of water reached 9.88 feet above normal. The storm became
post-tropical whenever it moved away from the U.S. on October 9,2016. According
to USA Today, the cost in damage is between $4 billion and $6 billion.
