NISSAN South Africa has created<br />

a special ice-cool<br />

NP200 for bakkie-lovers<br />

seeking the perfect partner<br />

for their adventurous lifestyle,<br />

while allowing them to stand<br />

out from the crowd.<br />

The all-new Nissan NP200<br />

ICE is the coolest half-tonne<br />

pick-up to have rolled off<br />

Nissan’s Rosslyn production<br />

line to date. The new model<br />

is available now in limited<br />

numbers across Nissan’s local<br />

dealer network from R191<br />

900.<br />

The new NP200 ICE is<br />

decked out in Nissan’s eyecatching<br />

Starling Blue or<br />

Bright Silver metallic paint<br />

finish.<br />

These two colours were chosen,<br />

not only for their popularity<br />

among NP200 ’sextensive<br />

colour palette' but also the<br />

way the special ICE decals,<br />

various brushed aluminium<br />

fittings and dark tinted windows<br />

are contrasted.<br />

It is not only colour that<br />

makes Nissan’s latest bakkie<br />

stand out. All the aluminium<br />

features fitted to the NP200<br />

ICE are uniquely created for<br />

this model. This includes the<br />

custom-designed 15” alloy<br />

wheels that are only available<br />

on the ICE model and the<br />

special aluminium nudge bar<br />

with a brushed finish. The<br />

brushed treatment gives the<br />

nudge bar a distinctive textured<br />

look, uncommon on styling<br />

pieces and adding to the<br />

ICE’s ability to turn heads.<br />

The NP200 ICE is also fitted<br />

with an aluminium sports bar,<br />

which has undergone the<br />

same, premium brushed<br />

treatment. As well as creating<br />

a sporty appearance, the<br />

sports bar adds additional<br />

functionality to the large load<br />

bay. This is especially true if<br />

you opt for the fitted motocross<br />

or mountain bike stand<br />

or want to tie down a couple<br />

of surf boards using the optional<br />

roll bar protector and<br />

standard sixteen anchor<br />

points in the load bay.<br />

The bay is also rubberised as<br />

standard helping to protect<br />

against water corrosion, impact<br />

and possible abrasive<br />

damage from certain loads.<br />

Nissan has also added a fitted<br />

tonneau cover, which is<br />

fastened by the popular siderail<br />

method, and rear step<br />

plates fitted below the ICE<br />

decals on the rear bumper.<br />

The NP200 ICE also features<br />

Nissan-approved dark<br />

tinted safety film. This treatment<br />

of the side and rear<br />

windows not only enhances<br />

the sporty look of the NP200<br />

ICE, but it serves a functional<br />

purpose by protecting the<br />

driver and the passenger<br />

from potential smash-andgrab<br />

incidents.<br />

Rounding off the comprehensive<br />

exterior updates are factory-fitted<br />

daytime running<br />

lights. This option is not available<br />

to any other NP200<br />

model in production and it<br />

makes the NP200 ICE a<br />

highly sought-after addition<br />

to the pick-up range.<br />

Inside the cabin, the NP200<br />

ICE is equally unique. The<br />

special edition features eco<br />

combination leather upholstery<br />

and rubber carpets,<br />

which are easy to clean following<br />

those sporting escapades.<br />

The luxury interior trim, combined<br />

with the special entertainment<br />

system, with<br />

hands-free Bluetooth phone<br />

connectivity and audio streaming<br />

and a USB connection,<br />

makes the cabin a very inviting<br />

place to spend time.<br />

Occupant safety is also well<br />

taken care of with two airbags<br />

and ABS brakes as part of the<br />

standard Nissan Safety Package.<br />

In the engine bay the NP200<br />

offers a choice of petrol and<br />

diesel engines. At R191 900,<br />

the 8V 1.6 litre petrol engine<br />

offers the most affordable entry<br />

into the NP200 range. This<br />

engine delivers 64 kW and<br />

128 Nm of torque and uses<br />

only 8.1 litres of fuel per 100<br />

km in a combined usage cycle.<br />

The diesel option is fitted with<br />

Nissan’s acclaimed 1.5 dCi<br />

turbodiesel engine, which delivers<br />

63 kW and 200 Nm and<br />

uses only 5.3 litre per 100 km<br />

in a combined cycle. This<br />

model is available for R2<strong>04</strong><br />

900.<br />

The Nissan NP200 remains<br />

Roadworks on the<br />

Nico Malan Pass in<br />

the Eastern Cape<br />

The South African National Roads Agency Soc Ltd<br />

(SANRAL) would like to notify road users that roadworks is<br />

continuing on the Nico Malan pass, between Seymour and<br />

Whittlesea on the R67, in the Eastern Cape.<br />

Roadworks start in the morning and will continue until 6pm.<br />

A single lane closure is currently implemented through the<br />

Pass with stop and go waiting periods of about 30 minutes<br />

at both ends.<br />

The Nico Malan closure through the Nico Malan Pass will be<br />

implemented until 14 December <strong>2016</strong>. Both lanes through<br />

the pass will be opened during the December <strong>2016</strong> holiday<br />

period.<br />

“There are however some days when we do have to work<br />

into the night, but we then ensure that all the required traffic<br />

safety measures are implemented,” said Mbulelo Peterson,<br />

Manager for SANRAL Southern Region manager.<br />

The roadworks will include:<br />

- Milling of existing surface layer<br />

- Construction of surface and base patches<br />

- Cold insitu recycling of the exiting base layer by means of<br />

cement stabilization<br />

- Construction of concrete and stone pitch side drains<br />

“Motorists are asked to plan their trips accordingly and to<br />

use caution when making use of the road,” said Peterson.<br />

ECONOMICALLY STRAINED SOUTH AFRICANS HOLD ON<br />

TO THEIR CARS LONGER, BUT ARE THEY SAFE?<br />

When times are tough financially,<br />

luxuries tend to be the<br />

first thing to drop off the budget.<br />

However, in the context of<br />

a country like SA - where<br />

public transport options are<br />

limited and many rely on their<br />

cars daily - having a safe and<br />

affordable mode of transport<br />

is a necessity.<br />

This is according to Jarrod<br />

Berman, Managing Director<br />

of motor financial services<br />

business and Imperial company,<br />

MotorHappy, who highlights<br />

that while a new car<br />

may not be on the cards for<br />

the average South African in<br />

<strong>2016</strong>, looking after their old<br />

or second hand car is vital.<br />

Referring to the National Association<br />

of Automobile Manufacturers<br />

of South Africa’s<br />

(NAAMSA) prediction that<br />

<strong>2016</strong> would be the year of<br />

used car sales in South Africa*,<br />

Berman notes that not<br />

only was the industry body’s<br />

prediction realised, but the<br />

sector also saw a dramatic<br />

decrease in new passenger<br />

car sales.<br />

“Sales in this regard dropped<br />

from 37 325 passenger vehicles<br />

sold in September 2015<br />

to 31 957 in September <strong>2016</strong>.<br />

Figures from the financial<br />

year ending in June <strong>2016</strong><br />

show that the total industry<br />

sales for new cars dropped<br />

by a dramatic 10.3% year-onyear.<br />

This is far above predicted<br />

levels suggesting serious<br />

economic strain on consumers<br />

who are no longer able to<br />

afford new cars,” Berman<br />

says.<br />

With an increase in the<br />

“tightening-of-the-belt” mentality<br />

South Africans have been<br />

forced to adopt - aggravated<br />

by the plummeting rand,<br />

prime interest rates of 10.5%,<br />

and fuel price increases peaking<br />

as high as R13.07 per<br />

litre in July - Berman notes<br />

that many South Africans simply<br />

don’t see the value in buying<br />

a new car and opt to hold<br />

on to their cars for longer,<br />

extending their payment<br />

plans from five to seven<br />

years or more.<br />

“As a result, our industry has<br />

to constantly look for innovative<br />

ways to service new as<br />

well as second-hand car owners,<br />

ensuring that their safety<br />

- related to maintenance - is<br />

taken care of while also offering<br />

options that fits their tightening<br />

budgets,” he explains.<br />

Berman stresses that while<br />

second-hand cars are attractive<br />

due to their initial lower<br />

price-tag, they are generally<br />

out of warranty, rack up increased<br />

maintenance costs,<br />

are heavier on fuel and would<br />

have naturally seen a fair<br />

amount of wear-and-tear.<br />

He says, “The need for funds<br />

or a plan of some sort to foot<br />

these bills is often overlooked<br />

due to the initial thrill of buying<br />

a car – albeit a second<br />

hand one.”<br />

Service and Maintenance<br />

plan options vary from one<br />

Financial Service Provider to<br />

the next, and the majority of<br />

plans are subject to a specified<br />

number of years or kilometres<br />

– whichever comes<br />

first. By the time a car has<br />

reached two to five years or<br />

its second owner, initial Warranties,<br />

Service and Maintenance<br />

Plans will likely have<br />

expired. This, however, does<br />

not have to spell the end for<br />

looking after your car.<br />

“With the change in times and<br />

economic circumstances<br />

have come solutions to fit<br />

the needs of motorists ranging<br />

from Extended Service<br />

Plans and Warranties, to deposit<br />

cover,” concludes Berman.<br />

“For the safety of<br />

everyone on the roads and<br />

keeping budgets in mind, it is<br />

essential for South African<br />

motorists to know their options<br />

and keep their trusted,<br />

new, used, second-hand or<br />

pre-loved cars in top running<br />

order.”<br />

LC featured levels<br />

of rigidity that surpassed<br />

"The LC is 60 per<br />

cent more rigid<br />

than the current<br />

Lexus GS performance<br />

sedan, which<br />

results in sharper<br />

and more precise,<br />

linear handling," Mr Sato said.<br />

"In fact, the LC goes further<br />

with its world-class rigidity resulting<br />

in a smoother and<br />

more lateral level of performance."<br />

Mr Sato added that the LFA<br />

development programme had<br />

played a major role in influencing<br />

key construction elements<br />

of the LC. "You will find<br />

the carbon fibre, composite<br />

technology we developed for<br />

the LFA in the lightweight<br />

parts we have designed for<br />

the LC, such as the compression-moulded<br />

sheets of re-impregnated<br />

carbon fibre used<br />

for the inner door panels," he<br />

said.<br />

The dedicated focus on outright<br />

dynamic ability for LC<br />

also led to the achievement of<br />

outstanding weight distribution<br />

- a 52:48 front-rear balance<br />

for the LC 500 V8 and<br />

51:49 for the LC 500h hybrid<br />

model.<br />

Mr Sato also remarked that<br />

Lexus International chief<br />

branding officer and master<br />

driver, Akio Toyoda had driven<br />

the LC at every key stage<br />

of development and had returned<br />

crucial feedback.<br />

"Mr Toyoda has driven the LC<br />

at all the important stages<br />

during the car's development<br />

and will continue to do so.<br />

"After taking the car around<br />

the Shibetsu proving ground<br />

in northern Japan in snowy<br />

conditions, he made several<br />

requests about how we might<br />

improve its characteristics, so<br />

you can be sure it is going to<br />

be a fun car to drive."<br />

The LC 500 and LC 500h are<br />

emerging markets.<br />

In addition to significant synergies,<br />

re-establishing trust in<br />

MMC has been identified as a<br />

top priority. As part of this,<br />

MMC will restructure its board<br />

of directors and executive<br />

committee which will be led<br />

by Osamu Masuko, Chief Executive<br />

Officer of MMC, while<br />

Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and<br />

CEO of the Nissan-Renault<br />

Alliance, has been appointed<br />
