Alkaline Ionizer
Supporting Your Health with
Unique Water Technology
Our health and the body’s internal
environment
Every day, we lose about 2.5L of water as a result of
exhalation, sweating and other bodily functions. Losing an
extremely large amount of water can cause a wide range of
physical problems. An adequate supply of clean, high-quality
water is the key to a healthy body.
Our health and the body’s internal
environment
To keep us healthy, our bodies maintain just the right internal
conditions such as the concentration of electrolytes, body
temperature and pH. This ability, referred to as homeostatis,
maintains a pH of approx. 7.4 inside the body, which is
slightly more alkaline than the neutral value of pH7.
Benefits
Alkaline ionized water has three properties that make it very
beneficial for our daily lives and health: Clean & Safe by
eliminating harmful substances and bacteria from the water,
Health Support by improving gastrointestinal symptoms
and Effective for Cooking including the extraction of flavor
components from food, softening of items, and removal of
astringent taste.
Panasonic Alkaline Ionizer
pH indicates the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+), with
pH7 taken as neutral. A higher concentration of hydrogen ions
increases acidity and a low concentration increases alkalinity. The
alkaline ionized water made by Panasonic is water that contains
a high concentration of hydrogen. Hydrogen has a powerful
reduction effect, which is the opposite effect of oxidation. As a
result, alkaline ionized water, water containing hydrogen has a
more powerful reduction effect than
other kinds of water.
Technology
High-performance filters and an electrolyzer generate ionized
water* with different pH values depending on electrolysis
strength. You can select the desired pH value with the press of
a button.
*Applies to the TK-7585.
Panasonic's Alkaline Ionizer – smoother tasting water to help
you and your family stay hydrated and healthy always.
There Is Always Hope...
What do breast cancer and osteoporosis have in common? Well, they invariably
affect women more than men. As the month of October commemorates both
these deadly diseases, it is time we take a closer look at them.
A data provided by Asia Pacific Osteoporosis audit of Malaysia in 2013 shows
that over the next four decades, the number of Malaysian population aged over
70 years is expected to increase by 417%. This shows an increment in number
from 939,010 in 2013 to 4.8 million in 2050. The life expectancy will also increase
seven-years longer than today, rising from 74 years to 81 years. Data shows that
this is also period where rapid decline of bone density with age which is the
hallmark feature of osteoporosis takes place.
This phenomenon is seen more markedly in women compared to men especially
after the age of 50. It is estimated that osteoporosis will result in 1 in 3 women
and 1 in 5 men to have fracture. If you're a woman, are you taking enough
precaution and remedies to tackle the scourge of osteoporosis?
While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps
to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others
to do the same. To motivate you to take action, we spoke to two breast cancer
survivors… who somehow summed up enough courage to fight off this dreaded
disease. Hopefully their story will increase awareness of the disease and inspire
you to take early action.
Wishing you great health,
Managing Troubled
Skin Naturally
29th October 2016 is World Psoriasis Day. It is an annual day
aimed to raise awareness, increase understanding and build
unity for more than 125 million people with psoriasis and/or
psoriatic arthritis around the world.
Nearly three percent of the world’s population, from men,
women, children or even newborn babies experience
symptoms of psoriasis. Psoriasis is a common chronic,
relapsing, immune-mediated and inflammatory disorder
with primary involvement of the skin. The skin cell growth
of psoriasis sufferer is about 3 times faster than normal
and results in thick, red and silvery scales on skin surface.
A substantial proportion of psoriasis patients experience
inflammatory polyarthritis called psoriatic arthritis which
causes physical, functional and psychosocial disability.
Psoriasis cannot be cured, but there are many ways of
controlling it. There are some tips to manage and avoid flare
up. Keeping skin moist is important and effective yet easier
way to reduce skin dryness, itchiness, redness, soreness and
scaling. Other suggestions are to soak in warm water for
10–15 minutes; expose under small doses of sun as ultraviolet
light in sunlight can slow down growth of skin cell; avoid harsh
chemicals products to inflamed skin; and avoid scratching and
remember to keep fingernails cut short.
MooGoo Milk Wash uses natural ingredients to cleanse and
yet prevents drying of the skin. It is enriched with Milk Protein,
an ingredient that is similar to the skin’s own protein and helps
maintain skin elasticity. MooGoo Milk Wash does not create
big bubbles like a synthetic detergent and it is a no tears
formulation for babies too.
MooGoo Irritable Skin Balm (a.k.a. Eczema & Psoriasis
Balm in Australia is TGA licensed as a therapeutic product for
eczema) offers both anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties
with natural ingredients such as aloe vera, allantoin, centella
asiatica, chamomile extract, olive oil, and sage oil. Follow
up with a perfect match, MooGoo Soothing MSM Cream for
instant soothing and great moisturising effect to protect your
fragile yet irritable skin.
Lastly, it is recommended to top up with extra moisturiser
MooGoo Skin Milk Udder Cream to keep skin moist and
supple. It contains skin repair ingredients and is non-greasy. It
is enriched with Sweet Almond Oil, Olive Oil and Rice Bran
Oil to keep your skin moisturised, supple and healthy. It is
used in a number of hospitals in Australia and United Kingdom
as a moisturising cream for dry and damaged skin following
radiation treatment and chemotherapy.
Less is more, MooGoo products are also free from mineral oil or
paraffin oil, colouring, artificial fragrance, paraben, SLS, steroid
and phthalates – ingredients that could cause skin irritation.
Age-proof
your eyes with
these turn-backtime
tips and
treatments
BEAUTIFUL EYES
NO MORE AGEING SIGNS
Your eyes can tell so many stories about
you. As you age, over time, eyelid
skin becomes thinner, more lined, and
less toned, creating the impression of
fatigue. Your eyes can make you look
worn out.
But not to fret! Top dermatologists have
offered their secret treatments and
makeup tricks that can brighten and
wake your skin around the eyes up.
Here are some of their best kept secrets:
Puffy eyes
Some puffiness is genetic, and no eye
cream will erase or reduce it. But if your
bags come and go, fluid retention is
probably the cause. Salty dinners, late
nights, a cocktail or two — they can all
make your body hold on to water. Since
lid skin is thinner than elsewhere on your
face, you'll notice swelling more.
What you can do: Thanks to the pull
of gravity, morning facial puffiness is
usually gone by lunchtime. To speed
things up, try placing a chilled eye
compress, cold water-soaked tea bags,
or cucumber slices over lids for five
minutes. Cold constricts blood vessels
and reduces swelling. The caffeine in
many eye creams is tightening, too.
Gently press on the bones around your
eyes as you apply it. The pressure
helps stimulate circulation and drain
excess fluid.
NATURAL & Beauty
Dark circles
Since skin becomes more translucent
with age, blood vessels appear more
prominent. When blood vessels show
through skin, they can give the eye area
a bluish cast. A less common cause
of darkness: post-inflammatory hyper
pigmentation, doctor-speak for clusters of
brown pigment that collect underneath
the eyes due to heredity or chronic
rubbing (often because of allergies or
bothersome contact lenses).
What you can do: Daily use of any basic
eye cream will temporarily plump skin so
blood vessels are less visible. Eye creams
are a better choice for this purpose than
regular face creams, because they tend to
have a higher concentration of emollients
for plumping and a thicker texture, which
makes them adhere to the ever-mobile
eye area. To improve the look of brown
pigment, try an eye cream with botanical
skin lighteners like licorice and kojic acid.
Lines and wrinkles
Every time you smile, frown, yawn,
or squint, the skin around your eyes
crinkles up. Eventually, as the collagen
levels diminish, your skin literally stays
scrunched, and deeper creases take the
place of fine lines.
What you can do: A few ingredients are
essential. The first is retinol, a vitamin A
derivative that rebuilds collagen levels
and helps smooth fine lines. Antioxidants
like green tea and vitamin C, which help
skin retain collagen, are effective wrinkle
reducers, too. If your skin is especially
sensitive, swap vitamin A products for
peptides — proteins that also stimulate
collagen growth.
Sagging lids
As collagen, elastin, and fat decrease
with age, eyelids get droopier. Genetics
determine when your skin will sag and
to what extent. And like any skin ageing,
sun exposure hastens the effect. As a
result, some women have sagging in their
late 30s.
What you can do: No eye cream alone
will reverse sagging once skin begins its
downward slide. Only surgery gives you
truly long-term improvement. But artfully
applied eye makeup can make drooping
lids less noticeable.
Surgery to the rescue
When you want faster, more dramatic
results than even the best eye cream or
makeup trick can offer, you'll find plenty of
longer-lasting (but costlier) options at the
dermatologist's or plastic surgeon's office.
Best for banishing
wrinkles
Botox injections. The doctor makes tiny
injections of botulinum toxin into the
muscles that cause wrinkles, forcing them
to relax. The injections take effect in a
week or so, and the area stays smooth
for three to six months.
Chemical peels. A medium-depth peel
(like trichloroacetic acid, a.k.a. TCA)
stimulates collagen growth by removing
the top layer of skin. The body senses an
injury and cranks out new healthy skin
as a way of healing itself. You'll look like
you have a bad sunburn for five to seven
days, but then facial skin will be smoother
and less lined for six months to a year.
Lasers. Many kinds of lasers are used
around the eyes, usually as part of an all
over facial rejuvenation treatment. Lasers
help reduce wrinkles by resurfacing skin
and stimulating collagen production. As
with a peel, you'll look badly sunburned
for a few days to a week before the
smoothing shows up; it'll last for a year or
more, until new wrinkles form.
Best for hiding dark
circles
Hyaluronic acid injections. This clear gel
filler is injected directly into the hollows
beneath the eyes to even them so they no
longer appear as dark shadows. Expect
swelling, mild bruising, and tenderness
for up to a week afterward (the bruising
can be covered with concealer). Results
will last three to six months — or more.
Best for lifting sagging
lids
Blepharoplasty. During this surgery, the
doctor makes tiny incisions around or inside
the eyelids to remove loose skin and excess
fat, which create a droopy, sleepy look. It
takes about two weeks before the bruising
goes down; you may not want to return to
work until then. But the tightening effect lasts
for years. This procedure could make one
look 10 to 15 years younger.
NATURAL & Beauty
The skin around
the eye can be 1/10th as
thick as the skin on the rest of
the face. Due to the lesser amount of
oil glands around the eyes, this part of
the face is more likely to show premature
signs of ageing if it is neglected. The eye
area can show everyone your lack of sleep,
overindulgence of food and alcohol and
just how good you’re feeling or not. It is
therefore necessary to pay special
attention to the eye area and
treat it diligently and
consistently.
NATURAL & Beauty
Laugh lines-crows feet
Laugh lines commonly called crow’s
feet, are caused by the breakdown of
collagen in the skin, a direct result of sun
exposure and extrinsic ageing, just like
other wrinkles on the face. Since skin
around the eyes is much thinner than
that of the face, wrinkles may appear
prematurely. Using an eye cream twice
daily will soften the look of fine lines
and deeply moisturise the delicate
skin around the eyes. Adding a serum
containing Collagen and Hyaluronic
Acid, will keep skin firm, moist and
plump. Apply a few drops under
your eye cream twice daily. Avoiding
excessive sun exposure and using eye
creams are the keys to preventing signs
of aging around the eyes.
Puffiness and bags
Lack of sleep, meals high in salt, high
blood pressure, alcohol, and stress
can all result in puffy eyes, particularly
in the morning when the periorbital
area retains fluid. Most often this is
not a serious condition and usually
improves as the day goes by mainly
because being in a vertical position
helps redistribute the fluid around the
skin. Using and eye gel directly from
the refrigerator works as a soothing,
cooling morning treatment for tired,
puffy eyes. In some cases the puffiness
is not caused by the skin retaining
fluid but by the protrusion of the fatty
pad under the eye. Your dermatologist
or a plastic surgeon can recommend
treatment options in this case.
Dark circles
Dark circles are caused by blood
vessels showing through the delicate
skin around the eye area giving the
under eye area a bluish, purple cast,
often a hereditary condition. Fluid and
hemoglobin from leaky capillaries can
pool under the eyes giving a bruised
effect and nasal congestion dilates
and darkens the veins that drain from
the eyes to the nose. Dark circles can
also be caused by anemia. The thinner
the skin and the more deep set the
eyes are, the worse the condition can
appear. Skin can appear more pale
due to lack of sleep, hormonal changes
and pregnancy, which intensify the look
of the dark circles though these factors
do not actually cause dark circles.
How you can minimise
the look of dark circles
and puffiness:
• Use an eye cream rich in antioxidants
like Vitamins A, E and C which can
help strengthen capillary walls.
• Avoid over indulging in salty foods
and alcohol which cause the skin to
retain fluids, resulting in a shadowy
look under the eyes.
• Getting enough rest will minimise the
look of dark circles.
• Place cold cucumber slices, an ice
mask or tea bags over the eyes to
alleviate swelling.
• Rinse your face quickly with ice cold
water to reduce swelling.
Fabulous
20s, 30s,
40s and
Beyond
The Right
Skin Care for
Every Age
When it comes to skin care, most of us fall into one of two camps. There are those of us who never change
our routine, using the same ill-suited face wash and moisturiser from our high school days. Then there's the
other group, who embrace treatments like Botox and acid peels before there's a wrinkle in sight.
As we age, our skin changes. What
worked in our 20s won't do us any
favour in our 30s or 40s. If the goal is
to maintain a youthful, dewy glow well
into our golden years, and look just as
radiant every decade in between, we
need to tailor our skin care regimen to
the number of candles on our birthday
cake. Here, how to put your best face
forward at every age.
If you're in your 20s
At this age, your goal is to preserve and
protect. In your 20s, many of the skin
issues you see come from carefree living
(and neglect): partying on weekends,
drinking too much, pulling all-nighters
and basking in the sun without
sunscreen. There might be lingering
acne from the teen years as well. Hard
living comes at a cost, though: fine
lines can start to creep up in the second
half of your 20s. To stave them off and
counteract your skin sins, it's important
to start a consistent skin care routine that
involves SPF.
First and foremost, keep skin looking
young with judicious use of sunscreen
‘UV protection of at least 30’ yearround.
Skin type matters, too, whether
sensitive, dry, combination, normal
or oily. Oily skin may not need a
moisturiser on top of sunscreen in
warmer months. Drier skin will benefit
from a layer of rich, creamy moisturiser
no matter what the weather.
If you're in your 30s
Discolouration caused by sun damage
or melasma (aka the mask of pregnancy
that can also be caused by birth
control), and fine lines are likely two
of your biggest skin challenges. At
this point, you need to start exfoliating
regularly because skin only exfoliates
naturally every 35 days as opposed to
every 14 in your 20s.
Cell renewal and oil (sebum) production
begin to slow. Expect to see the first
signs of ageing, such as expression
lines around eyes, on the forehead
and between the nose and mouth,
and freckles, the result of oxidative
damage if you’ve had too much sun
in your younger years. If you’ve taken
care, however, you might not see these
changes until your late 30s, so don’t
panic and change everything on your
30th birthday.
If you're in your 40s
In your 40s, expression lines between
12 Natural Health * October 2016 VOL 73
NATURAL & Beauty
your brows and around your eyes and mouth don't
disappear like they did in your 30s. Your estrogen level
is tapering so your skin will become dryer. The neck and
décolleté area might start to look crepey as well. Overall
you'll need to add moisture and collagen-building ingredients
like peptides. Now you definitely need to add active
ingredients. It’s also a good time for eye cream.
SPF and antioxidants are still important to prevent further
damage, and you may want to exfoliate a little more
often, to prevent skin from looking dull. Tweak your
existing regimen to target particular issues.
If you're in your 50s
Moisture, moisture, moisture. This should be your main
concern in your 50s. Loss of tone, hollow eyes and sagging
are your biggest issues, and creams and serums can only
do so much. If you're looking for more dramatic results, in
addition to using powerful products that contain peptides,
retinoids, or alpha hydroxy or amino acids, consider talking
to your dermalogist about laser treatments and other noninvasive
or invasive skin rejuvenation options.
You definitely need retinoids if you want to hang on to
collagen. It becomes a more important ingredient as you
age. Collagen-building peptides are also key to help with
sagging, as well as topical vitamin C. Moisture-boosting
ingredients including hyaluronic acid and ceramides help
skin retain the extra hydration it needs. And keep using that
SPF regularly.
Moisture,
moisture,
moisture. This
should be your
main concern in
your 50s.
Water
How much
should
you drink
every day?
14 Natural Health * October 2016 VOL 73
HEALTH & Wellness
Water is essential to good health,
yet needs vary by individual. These
guidelines can help ensure you drink
enough fluids.
How much water should you drink each
day? It's a simple question with no easy
answers. Studies have produced varying
recommendations over the years, but in
truth, your water needs depend on many
factors, including your health, how active
you are and where you live.
Although no single formula fits everyone,
knowing more about your body's need
for fluids will help you estimate how much
water to drink each day.
Health benefits of water
Water is your body's principal chemical
component and makes up about 60
percent of your body weight. Every
system in your body depends on water.
For example, water flushes toxins out of
vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells,
and provides a moist environment for ear,
nose and throat tissues.
Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a
condition that occurs when you don't have
enough water in your body to carry out
normal functions. Even mild dehydration
can drain your energy and make you tired.
How much water do
you need?
Every day you lose water through your
breath, perspiration, urine and bowel
movements. For your body to function
properly, you must replenish its water
supply by consuming beverages and
foods that contain water.
So how much fluid does the average,
healthy adult living in a temperate
climate need? The Institute of Medicine
determined that an adequate intake (AI)
for men is roughly about 13 cups (3
litres) of total beverages a day. The AI for
women is about 9 cups (2.2 litres) of total
beverages a day.
What about the advice to
drink 8 glasses a day?
Everyone has heard the advice, "Drink
eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day."
That's about 1.9 litres, which isn't that
different from the Institute of Medicine
recommendations. Although the "8 by 8"
rule isn't supported by hard evidence,
it remains popular because it's easy to
remember. Just keep in mind that the
rule should be reframed as: "Drink eight
8-ounce glasses of fluid a day," because
all fluids count toward the daily total.
Factors that influence
water needs
You may need to modify your total fluid
intake depending on how active you are,
the climate you live in, your health status,
and if you're pregnant or breast-feeding.
Exercise. If you exercise or engage in any
activity that makes you sweat, you need to
drink extra water to compensate for the fluid
loss. An extra 1.5 to 2.5 cups (400 to 600
milliliters) of water should suffice for short
bouts of exercise, but intense exercise lasting
more than an hour (for example, running a
marathon) requires more fluid intake. How
much additional fluid you need depends on
how much you sweat during exercise, and
the duration and type of exercise.
HEALTH & Wellness
Intense exercise. During long bouts
of intense exercise, it's best to use a
sports drink that contains sodium, as this
will help replace sodium lost in sweat
and reduce the chances of developing
hyponatremia, which can be lifethreatening.
Also, continue to replace
fluids after you're finished exercising.
Environment. Hot or humid weather can
make you sweat and requires additional
intake of fluid. Heated indoor air also
can cause your skin to lose moisture
during wintertime. Further, altitudes
greater than 8,200 feet (2,500 metres)
may trigger increased urination and more
rapid breathing, which use up more of
your fluid reserves.
Illnesses or health conditions. When
you have fever, vomiting or diarrhoea,
your body loses additional fluids. In these
cases, you should drink more water. In
some cases, your doctor may recommend
oral rehydration solutions. You may also
need increased fluid intake if you develop
certain conditions, including bladder
infections or urinary tract stones. On the
other hand, some conditions, such as
heart failure and some types of kidney,
liver and adrenal diseases, may impair
excretion of water and even require that
you limit your fluid intake.
Pregnancy or breast-feeding. Women
who are pregnant or breast-feeding
need additional fluids to stay hydrated.
Large amounts of fluid are used
especially when nursing. The Institute
of Medicine recommends that pregnant
women drink about 10 cups (2.3 litres)
of fluids daily and women who breastfeed
consume about 13 cups (3.1 litres)
of fluids a day.
Beyond the tap: Other sources of water
You don't need to rely only on what you
drink to meet your fluid needs. What you
eat also provides a significant portion
of your fluid needs. On average, food
provides about 20 percent of total water
intake. For example, many fruits and
vegetables, such as watermelon and
spinach, are 90 percent or more water
by weight.
In addition, beverages such as milk
and juice are composed mostly of
water. Even beer, wine and caffeinated
beverages — such as coffee, tea or
When
you have
fever, vomiting
or diarrhoea,
your body loses
additional
fluids.
soda — can contribute, but these should
not be a major portion of your daily total
fluid intake. Water is still your best bet
because it's calorie-free, inexpensive and
readily available.
Staying safely hydrated
Generally, if you drink enough fluid
so that you rarely feel thirsty and your
urine is colourless or light yellow — and
measures about 6.3 cups (1.5 litres) or
more a day if you were to keep track —
your fluid intake is probably adequate. If
you're concerned about your fluid intake
or have health issues, check with your
doctor or a registered dietitian. He or she
can help you determine the amount of
water that's right for you.
To ward off dehydration and make sure
your body has the fluids it needs, make
water your beverage of choice. It's also
a good idea to:
Drink a glass of water or other caloriefree
or low-calorie beverage with each
meal and between each meal
Drink water before, during
and after exercise
Although uncommon, it is possible
to drink too much water. When your
kidneys are unable to excrete the excess
water, the electrolyte (mineral) content
of the blood is diluted, resulting in low
sodium levels in the blood, a condition
called hyponatremia. Endurance athletes,
such as marathon runners who drink
large amounts of water, are at higher
risk of hyponatremia. In general, though,
drinking too much water is rare in healthy
adults who eat an average diet.
Are Malaysians
Healthy?
20 Natural Health * October 2016 VOL 73
FITNESS & Weight Loss
Close to 70% of Malaysian adults felt
their health was not as good as it was
five years ago. Even more worrying is
that 61% of adults under age 30 agreed
with this sentiment, although this younger
age group should be in the prime of
their health. For the first time, the survey
also uncovered obesity as a growing
challenge for both adults and children.
Those surveyed recognised that healthy
living involved a combination of physical
elements such as getting sufficient sleep
and eating healthy, as well as mental
aspects such as maintaining a positive
mindset and knowing how to reduce
stress. Unfortunately, a key component of
healthy living for many in other countries
– exercise – did not even feature as one
of the top drivers of healthy living among
Malaysian adults.
The verdict on diet and
nutrition: Bad eating
habits are leading to
weightier issues, even
among children.
Malaysia among the top three countries
with the highest weight-loss targets.
More than half (55%) of the survey
participants in Malaysia were either preobese
or obese, based on their Body
Mass Index readings.
Equally worrying is that 17% of
Malaysian parents wanted their children
to lose at least 4.5 kgs, indicating that
unhealthy habits are steadily taking root
even among the younger generation.
There is also a pre-conception that
healthy food is more expensive (81%);
does not taste very good (64%) and is
harder to prepare (58%).
The scoop on exercise:
Malaysians exercise
regularly but they spend
much more time on
their screens!
Malaysia scored a mediocre 63 points
out of 100 in the 2016 Healthy Living
Index – the third wave of AIA’s landmark
survey of over 10,000 adults across
15 countries in Asia Pacific –The
2016 survey – revealed at HEALTH
PERSPECTIVES: A REALITY CHECK
roundtable discussion on May 11th –
also showed that the 751 Malaysian
adults who participated in the survey
scored lower (68 points) than the
regional average of 73 points when
asked if they were satisfied with their
health status.
Unhealthy eating habits are hampering
our efforts to lose weight and live healthy
– 86% of those surveyed said they tend
to eat when distracted with their screens,
81% admitted to eating unhealthy snacks
and 73% had their dinners late.
Attempts to eat healthier are still restricted
to the basics of drinking more water
(73%) and eating more fruits and
vegetables (60%).
Obesity has surfaced as one of the
outcomes of poor eating habits: six out
of 10 Malaysians surveyed wanted
to lose an average of 8.5kgs, which
is considered substantial, placing
Malaysian adults (69%) said they
exercise regularly. They spend
an average of 2.6 hours a week
exercising – this is lower than the
regional average of 3 hours and
the minimum 3.5 hours a week
recommended by most fitness experts.
Interestingly, Internet and smartphone
usage showed up as the barriers that
are preventing Malaysians from getting
enough exercise and sleep. On average,
adults here spent an average of 4.1
Natural Health * October 2016 VOL 73
21
FITNESS & Weight Loss
hours a day on the Internet for non-work
related pursuits – one of the highest
numbers of hours recorded in the region.
This is a sharp contrast to the 2.6 hours a
week Malaysians spend exercising.
About 68% of respondents claimed that
they are addicted to online activities,
much higher than the regional average of
57%. This addiction trend will continue
to be fuelled by children growing up
with the Internet and social media as
integral aspects of their lives. Currently,
50% of Malaysian parents claimed that
their children had too much screen time
– TV (44%), time spent online (31%) and
playing video games (26%).
It’s perhaps not surprising then that
Malaysian adults are sleep deprived.
While they wish to get 7.5 hours of
sleep a night, in reality, they only enjoy
6.3 hours – the lowest among the
15countries surveyed.
Health concerns rank
high, but the majority
don’t know the true state
of their health.
The majority of those surveyed said
diseases related to the heart, diabetes,
cancer and stroke among their top
health concerns. Many were also
worried about their mental well-being:
76% were concerned about anxiety,
74% about depression and 72% about
Alzheimer’s/senility.
Despite those concerns, only 46% of
Malaysian adults had a medical checkup
done in the last 12 months. This is
lower than the regional average of 52%
and a decline from previous years (52%
in 2011 and 50% in 2013).
There is a desire to do
more, and they welcome
guidance and motivation
to sustain healthy
behaviours.
Many (91%) Malaysian adults admit that
they can definitely do more to improve
their health. It’s encouraging that 75%
said they have taken some small steps in
that direction. Only 15% confessed that
they have not done anything to improve
their health.
What would motivate them and reinforce
more healthy behaviours? Seeing
tangible results: such as wanting to feel
better physically (about 90%), mentally
(88%) and look better (85%).
Adults in Malaysia welcome guidance
that would help them change one step
at a time (84% said this); setting smaller
and more achievable goals (79%);
getting updates on their progress (76%)
and earning rewards for achieving their
goals (73%). For those who had not
taken any steps towards healthy living,
75% said not knowing what goals to
work towards was the main obstacle,
once again indicating the very real
need for guidance.
DYSON PURE COOL LINK
Fan and Purifier In One
What do you see in a tower fan before
buying it? When it comes to Dyson Pure
Cool Link, everything. With a futuristic
design, Dyson Pure Cool Link stands out
not only in looks but features as well; hot in
looks and some pretty features. In fact,
Dyson Pure Cool Link is more than just a
fan. If it’s hot, you might need personal
cooling and purified air throughout the room.
But there's no need for two machines the
more powerful settings of Dyson Pure Cool
Link will generate smooth, long-range airflow
to cool you.
Besides its innovative purification technology
that uses a unique vacuum-sealed 360°
Glass HEPA filter in capturing 99.95% of
ultrafine allergens and pollutants as small as
0.1 microns, and potentially harmful particles
from the air including pollen, bacteria and
pet dander, the activated Carbon layer is an
added technology that provides solutions to
remove odours and harmful toxins such as
paint fumes.
So once the air in your room is improved,
the purifier helps you keep it that way. All
you have to do is just set it and forget it. In
auto mode, it will automatically monitor
indoor air quality, and adjust airflow
accordingly. The multi functionality of the
machine presents a real benefit to its
consumers as it does not only project cleaner
air evenly and quietly all year round, but
also able to double up as a fan to tackle the
current heatwave.
Using an independent motor for smooth
oscillation, Dyson Pure Cool Link projects
and circulates purified air across the room
and intelligently speeds up airflow for
cooling in hot weather. Dyson Pure Cool
Link offers intelligent purification where it
automatically monitors, reacts and purifies
the air quality inside your home then reports
to your Dyson Link app to give connectivity
to remotely monitor from wherever you are.
With the automatic night-time mode, LED
display dims without any disturbance to
perform its duties only using the quietest
settings. If in any case you want to do some
adjustments from right where you are, there
is a remote control with 10 precise airflow
settings, magnetised to store on the
machine.
Dyson Pure Cool Link is not only stylishly
designed but well thought out with no
awkward grills or blades for easy cleaning.
You can position it anywhere in the room too
as it has a small footprint that can sit on a
piece of A4 paper.
Dyson Pure Cool Link is a proud recipient
of the Quiet Mark by the Noise Abatement
Society and certified asthma & allergy
friendly by Allergy Standards Limited.

CORNELL CAC-PD63ECO
Cornell Evaporative Cooler
Powered by the natural process of
evaporation, air coolers do not rely
on extremely large amounts of
electricity and chemical based
coolants. Because it uses nothing but
cold water and electricity to lower
indoor temperatures, it’s also a more
ecologically sound alternative to air
conditioning. Air cooler can provide
energy savings and environmental
benefits that can potentially lower
your indoor air temperature. Air
coolers use a fraction of the energy
used by an air conditioner or central
air unit and cost a fraction less too.
For these reasons, the Powerful 110w
Cornell Evaporative Cooler CAC-
PD63ECO is a winner. The
Honeycomb Filter fitted in this cooler
is a revolutionary concept made of an
eco-friendly anti-bacterial and
anti-mould material that produces
efficient cooling and superior
ventilation performance. It creates 50
times more area-to-surface heat
exchange while purifying the air and
absorbing dust particles, resulting in
clean and cooler air.
The Cornell Honeycomb Filter works
by pumping cooler water from its tank
and pouring over the Honeycomb
Filter. Warm air is then drawn into the
cooler firstly through a dustproof filter
and secondly by the Honeycomb
Filter. As warm air passes through the
Honeycomb Filter, water evaporates
into the air, resulting in heat and
actual air temperature reduction. Its
large 6 Litre removable water tank
allows more convenience for refilling
water and regular water tank
cleaning to prevent bacteria and
fungal growth, and secondary
contamination. In addition, a built-in
water level indicator tells you when
the tank falls below minimum to notify
you to add more water.
Using the LCD display control panel
across the top of the unit, you can set
the air to oscillate, set the timer for
automatic shutoff, adjust blower
speed and turn ionisation on or off. It
offers 3 wind speed (>30°C Hi
speed at 11m/s, 25°C - 29°C
Medium speed at 9 m/s and 24°C
Low speed at 7 m/s) to suit your
convenience. Coming along with a
remote control, this cooler is sure to
suit your home’s unique needs. What’s
more, the cooler is so energy efficient
that it automatically shuts down after
15 hours of continuous operation.
Mounted on 4 large wheels, this
portable cooler comes with a handle
to be easily rolled into place and
placed anywhere in the room.

Cornell Revo Fan CTF-PD68ECO
1st Eco Friendly Tower Fan In the World
Tower fans are an excellent option for
increasing air circulation in an
affordable way. Even if you have
central air cooling system, some
rooms in your home or office just don't
get the airflow you need. The best
fans can help you cool down quickly,
making airflow better in rooms your
air conditioner doesn't reach.
However, searching for a new
tower fan can be overwhelming at
times, There are a seemingly
multitude of different variations of
tower fans. What are the general
benefits to tower fans? Tower fans
offer a superior amount of air flow
in an incredibly compact unit. These
fans distribute air, oscillating on a
stationary base. This combination of
design creates an incredibly
efficient and effective product. The
tower design is also the most
recognisable attribute: their shape
allows tower fans to slide into
spaces that would otherwise be
unable to house a fan unit.
When you are looking for a
standing fan, you'll want to consider
the size of the room you want to
cool, your price range, how much
space the fan can take up and if it's
aesthetically appealing.
Cornell Revo Fan is a stylishly
looking tower fan that meets the
criteria with a generous number of
features. For a start, it is equipped
with a smart body sensor, where it
automatically detects people in the
room and adjusts oscillation angle
to produce 360° horizontal
oscillation and 90° vertical
oscillation to generously enhance
even air circulation in the room. You
can even manually adjust the
oscillation angle of 60°/90°/180°
or 360° with a touch on the remote
control to enjoy 10m/s Super Air
Speed. However, its Smart
Temperature Sensor can
automatically adjust wind speed
according to room temperature if
you want it to. You can set the timer
to shut off when you are away from
home or sleeping.
The Cornell Revo Fan is more than
just a tower fan. Designed to take
up little space, its unique look and
intelligent eco-friendly functions
with LED display, make it an
attractive sight wherever you place
it home or office.

Are you holding the
newspaper farther away
from your eyes than you
used to? Join the crowd—
age can bring changes that
affect your eyesight. Some
changes are more serious
than others, but for many
problems, there are things
you can do to protect your
vision. The key is to have
regular eye exams so you
can spot problems early.
HOW
YOUR
VISION
CHANGES
AS YOU
AGE
28 Natural Health * October 2016 VOL 73
SPECIAL
Steps to Protect Your
Eyesight
Have your eyes checked regularly by
an eye care professional—either an
ophthalmologist or optometrist. People
over age 65 should have yearly dilated
eye exams. During this exam, the eye
care professional should put drops in
your eyes that will widen (dilate) your
pupils so that he or she can look at the
back of each eye. This is the only way
to find some common eye diseases that
have no early signs or symptoms. If you
wear glasses, your prescription should be
checked, too.
See your doctor regularly to check for
diseases like diabetes and high blood
pressure. These diseases can cause eye
problems if not controlled or treated. See
an eye care professional right away if you:
• Suddenly cannot see or everything
looks blurry
• See flashes of light
• Have eye pain
• Experience double vision
• Have redness or swelling of your eye
or eyelid
Protect your eyes from too much sunlight
by wearing sunglasses that block
ultraviolet (UV) radiation and a hat with a
wide brim when you are outside. Healthy
habits, like not smoking, making smart
food choices, and maintaining a healthy
weight can also help protect your vision.
Common Eye Problems
The following common eye problems can
be easily treated. But, sometimes they
can be signs of more serious issues.
• Presbyopia (prez-bee-OH-pee-uh) is a
slow loss of ability to see close objects
or small print. It is normal to have this
problem as you get older. People with
presbyopia often have headaches or
strained, tired eyes. Reading glasses
usually fix the problem.
• Floaters are tiny specks or “cobwebs”
that seem to float across your vision.
You might see them in well-lit rooms
or outdoors on a bright day. Floaters
can be a normal part of ageing. But,
sometimes they are a sign of a more
serious eye problem such as retinal
detachment. If you see many new
floaters and/or flashes of light, see
your eye care professional right away.
• Tearing (or having too many tears)
can come from being sensitive to
light, wind, or temperature changes,
or having a condition called dry eye.
Wearing sunglasses may help. So
might eye drops. Sometimes tearing is
a sign of a more serious eye problem,
like an infection or a blocked tear
duct. Your eye care professional can
treat these problems.
• Eyelid problems can result from
different diseases or conditions.
Common eyelid problems include red
and swollen eyelids, itching, tearing,
and crusting of eyelashes during
sleep. These problems may be caused
by a condition called blepharitis
(ble-fa-RI-tis) and treated with warm
compresses and gentle eyelid scrubs.
Eye Diseases and
Disorders
The following eye conditions can lead
to vision loss and blindness. They may
have few or no early symptoms. Regular
eye exams are your best protection.
If your eye care professional finds a
problem early, there are often things you
can do to keep your eyesight.
• Cataracts are cloudy areas in the
eye’s lens causing blurred or hazy
vision. Some cataracts stay small
Natural Health * October 2016 VOL 73
29
SPECIAL
and don’t change your eyesight a
lot. Others become large and reduce
vision. Cataract surgery can restore
good vision. It is a safe and common
treatment. If you have a cataract, your
eye care professional will watch for
changes over time to see if you would
benefit from surgery.
• Corneal diseases and conditions can
cause redness, watery eyes, pain,
problems with vision, or a halo effect
of the vision (things appear to have an
aura of light around them). Infection
and injury are some of the things that
can hurt the cornea. Some problems
with the cornea are more common
in older people. Treatment may be
simple — for example, changing your
eyeglass prescription or using eye
drops. In severe cases, surgery may
be needed.
• Dry eye happens when tear glands
don’t work well. You may feel itching,
burning, or other discomfort. Dry eye
is more common as people get older,
especially for women. Your eye care
professional may tell you to use a
home humidifier, special eye drops
(artificial tears), or ointments to treat
dry eye.
• Glaucoma often comes from too much
fluid pressure inside the eye. If not
treated, it can lead to vision loss and
blindness. People with glaucoma often
have no early symptoms or pain. You
can protect yourself by having regular
dilated eye exams. Glaucoma can be
treated with prescription eye drops,
lasers, or surgery.
• Retinal disorders are a leading cause
of blindness in the United States. Retinal
disorders that affect aging eyes include:
• Age-related macular degeneration
(AMD). AMD can harm the sharp
vision needed to see objects clearly
and to do common things like driving
and reading. During a dilated eye
exam, your eye care professional
will look for signs of AMD. There
are treatments for AMD. If you
have AMD, ask if special dietary
supplements could lower your chance
of it getting worse.
• Diabetic retinopathy. This problem
may occur if you have diabetes.
Diabetic retinopathy develops slowly
and often has no early warning signs.
If you have diabetes, be sure to have
a dilated eye exam at least once
a year. Keeping your blood sugar
under control can prevent diabetic
retinopathy or slow its progress. Laser
surgery can sometimes prevent it from
getting worse.
• Retinal detachment. THIS IS A
MEDICAL EMERGENCY. When the
retina separates from the back of the
eye, it’s called retinal detachment. If
you see new floaters or light flashes,
or if it seems like a curtain has been
pulled over your eye, go to your eye
care professional right away. With
surgery or laser treatment, doctors
often can prevent loss of vision.
Low Vision
Low vision means you cannot fix your
eyesight with glasses, contact lenses,
medicine, or surgery. Low vision affects
some people as they age. You may have
low vision if you:
• Can’t see well enough to do everyday
tasks like reading, cooking, or sewing
• Have difficulty recognizing the faces
of your friends or family
• Have trouble reading street signs
• Find that lights don’t seem as bright
If you have any of these problems,
ask your eye care professional to
test you for low vision. Special tools
can help people with low vision to
read, write, and manage daily tasks.
These tools include large-print reading
materials, magnifying aids, closed-circuit
televisions, audio tapes, electronic
reading machines, and computers with
large print and a talking function.
Other things that may help:
• Change the type of lighting in your
room.
• Write with bold, black felt-tip markers.
• Use paper with bold lines to help you
write in a straight line.
• Put colored tape on the edge of
your steps to help you see them and
prevent you from falling.
• Install dark-coloured light switches
and electrical outlets that you can see
easily against light-coloured walls.
• Use motion lights that turn on when
you enter a room. These may help
you avoid accidents caused by
poor lighting.
• Use telephones, clocks, and watches
with large numbers; put large-print
labels on the microwave and stove.
Remember to ask your eye doctor if your
vision is okay for safe driving.
Celebrating Breast
Cancer Survivors
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which
is an annual campaign to increase awareness of
the disease. While most people are aware of breast
cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a
plan to detect the disease in its early stages and
encourage others to do the same. To motivate you
to take action, we spoke to a two breast cancer
survivors… and fighters. Hopefully their story will
inspire you and encourage you to take action.
Puan Amnah Salleh
48 years
Married with 3 children
aged 12, 16 and 17
When and how did you first find out
you have breast cancer?
I was first diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in Nov
2005 and had a lumpectomy on my right breast in Dec of the
same year.
What were your main concerns after
being diagnosed?
My main concern was whether I can afford the treatment,
whether I can survive and who’s going to take care of my kids.
How did you cope emotionally?
When I was first diagnosed, I was shocked and shut myself out
for a few days. I thought about my condition for three weeks
and finally accepted my situation. Then I mustered up the
courage to tell my family.
How did your family react to the news?
There were shocked and sad. My husband was calm as he
needed to be strong for the family. My kids were too young
to grasp the whole thing then. I think me being calm and
accepting of my own condition helped them to understand and
help reduce the stress and tension. Slowly we talked about
what are the solutions we have to take as a family. Family
support is really important.
Is there a history of breast cancer in
your family?
After I was diagnosed, my uncle and sister also had cancer.
Before that I was not aware of anybody in the family who
had cancer.
What kind of treatment did you
undergo?
After first diagnosed in 2005, I had six chemo sessions in
2006 followed by 20 times of radiotherapy and 5 years of
tamoxifen (Tamoxifen blocks the actions of estrogen and is used
to treat and prevent some types of breast cancer).
How did you manage the costs of
treatment?
Fortunately, I have insurance to cover the initial part and
thereafter there was subsidy from the hospital.
Did you have any support network?
Besides my family, I joined the Breast Cancer Welfare
Association where I had a support group and I also took part in
extra-curricular activities with them.
How has breast cancer affected your
outlook on life?
There is no time to waste and we have to live life to the fullest. It
also makes me think on what is the most important things in life
like health and family.
Have you completely recovered?
I’m in remission... so need regular monitoring.
What are you doing towards raising
awareness about breast cancer?
I share my experiences with friends and family and through my
support groups. Every single story and experience counts in
helping others cope better.
What advice would you like to give to
women about breast cancer?
Don’t worry about petty thing, keep positive, cherish life as it
comes daily as there is no time to waste. Also, it’s important to
go for check-ups.
Penny Chun Kim Fong
When and how did you first find out
you have breast cancer?
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. It was diagnosed
when I went for a medical check- up. We had a biopsy and
fortunately it was discovered at an initial stage.
What were your main concerns after
being diagnosed?
My main concern was, would I be a burden. I usually am the
one taking care of people and I do not feel good to burden
and have someone taking care of me.
How did you cope emotionally?
When I was first diagnosed, I was calm and trusted God.
The doctor said it was an initial stage so the treatment is fairly
straightforward. That helped put me at ease.
How did your family react to the news?
There were supportive as they were quite informed about
cancer and its treatments.
Is there a history of breast cancer in
your family?
No.
How did you manage the costs of
treatment?
Fortunately, it was covered by insurance.
Did you have a support network?
Yes … the Breast Cancer Welfare Association where I have
support group and I take part in extra-curricular activities
with them.
How has breast cancer affected your
outlook on life?
Be courageous in life as it is uncertain. So live one day at a time.
Have you completely recovered?
Yes.
What are you doing towards raising
awareness about breast cancer?
Share my experiences with friends and family and through my
support groups.
What advice would you like to give to
women about breast cancer?
Accept life that it is filled with challenges. Just be calm and find
the best way to cope – key is to keep positive and hopeful.
How Should A Breast Self-Exam Be Performed?
1) In the Shower
Using the pads of your fingers, move
around your entire breast in a circular
pattern moving from the outside to the
center, checking the entire breast and
armpit area. Check both breasts each
month feeling for any lump, thickening,
or hardened knot. Notice any changes
and get lumps evaluated by your
Look for any changes in the contour,
any swelling, or dimpling of the skin, or
changes in the nipples. Next, rest your
women's breasts do, so look for any
dimpling, puckering, or changes,
particularly on one side.
3) Lying Down
When lying down, the breast tissue
spreads out evenly along the chest wall.
Place a pillow under your right shoulder
and your right arm behind your head.
Using your left hand, move the pads
of your fingers around your right breast
gently in small circular motions covering
the entire breast area and armpit.
Use light, medium, and firm pressure.
Squeeze the nipple; check for discharge
and lumps. Repeat these steps for your
left breast.
PREVENTION & Remedies
Four Ways
to Keep
Zika at Bay
38 Natural Health * October 2016 VOL 73
PREVENTION & Remedies
Zika, a generally mild disease identical
to dengue, is a mosquito-borne flavivirus
first identified in Uganda in 1947, with
rising cases of the endemic reported
in 70 countries and territories to date.
The virus, which the World Health
Organisation calls a ‘global health
emergency’, is said to be transmitted
by the bite of an infected female
AedesAegypti mosquito that bites in the
day time 1 . While Brazil has recorded
the highest case of 1 million in 2015,
Singapore and Malaysia has reported
41 and 3 cases of the outbreak
respectively, with one case involving a
four-month pregnant woman in Johor.
Since Zika was first detected in Southeast
Asia, online marketplace 11street has
seen surge in search trends for mosquitorelated
items, such as mosquito patch with
a 517% increase, and mosquito bugslock
at 349%. These warning signals are
raising concerns about a potential rapid
surge of the virus across Asian countries.
As there are no vaccines and antiviral
drugs to cure the disease, the Ministry
of Health has urged Malaysians to take
precautionary steps to reduce the risk of
exposure to mosquitoes in their homes and
protect themselves from Zika.
Home Care Tips –
Prevent Breeding of
Aedes Mosquitoes
Also known as a “container-breeding
mosquito”, the AedesAegypti lays eggs
in and around standing water. Hence,
it is important that water in containers
are removed and items that collect
water such as old tyres, vases, pots
and bottles are stowed away safely
to prevent female mosquitoes from
breeding. If water must be stored, ensure
that containers are tightly covered to
hinder mosquitoes from gaining access
to water. As mosquito larvae stick around
containers like glue, and can endure up
to eight months in dry conditions, always
empty and scrub clean containers once a
week or whenever not in use.
Water gardens and swimming pools
are great to have, but are major
mosquito producers if they are allowed
to stagnate. If you have decorative
ponds or a swimming pool at home,
always aerate and clean the ponds
and pools whenever possible to ensure
that there are no surviving mosquito
larvae. Other than that, always ensure
that drains are properly managed,
cleaned and free of trash and weeds
so that they are not clogged.
The most underrated piece of utility that
protects you against mosquitoes and
the diseases they carry are mosquito
net window screen and mosquito net
for when you sleep. These utilities are
great preventive measures to disable the
pesky insects from invading your home.
If you have a baby at home, invest in a
baby bed cushion that is equipped with
mosquito tents for their afternoon naps or
plug in an insect killer lamp. If you feel
that having mosquito nets are a hassle to
keep, you can always opt for air purifier
with mosquito catcher.
Self-care Tips – Mosquito
Repellents are Your New
Best Friend
There are ample reasons to take every
possible measure to avoid mosquito
bites even without taking into account
their terrible, stinging itchiness. What
most people are not aware of is that
mosquitoes are attracted to carbon
dioxide, humidity as well as certain
chemicals in our sweats.
health in the next few weeks.
A multifunction thermometer at home
is important to monitor fever outbreak.
If you feel sluggish and out of tune,
it might be your body telling you
something. Do not ignore this and
quickly rush to your nearestdoctor or
healthcare provider for a test. Also,
stock up on some fever patches to help
cool down your body temperature.
One of the more known measures to
mask the chemical cues that attract
mosquitoes to feast on our bodies are
repellents. Whether it is in the form of a
mosquito repellent patch or spray, plantbased
or otherwise, always make a habit
to apply mosquito repellent before going
outdoors, especially during daytime
which is when Aedes mosquitoes are
most active. Repellents are recommended
for both children and adults as their efficacy
last for several hours. Take note to always
apply sunscreen before putting on mosquito
repellents for optimised efficacy. If the smell
of the spray or patch is too strong for you,
you can always opt for a more innovative
alternative, such as the bugslock that repels
mosquito just as effectively.
Travel Tips – Postponing
Travel Plans to Zika
Outbreak Countries
It is highly advisable to postpone
your travel plans to areas with Zika
outbreaks. However, under unavoidable
circumstances, it is imperative to consult
your doctor or healthcare provider before
you leave. Always equip yourself with
a travel case of essential items such
as mosquito repellent spray, mosquito
repellent soap and mosquito bikit.
Despite the hoopla on the virus, it should
not deter you from enjoying the great
outdoors without worrying about getting
bitten. When you travel and venture
outdoors for a day of sight-seeing and
fun-times, always remember the two
Ds – dress and defend. As mosquitoes
are attracted to dark colours, opt for a
more cheerful style with bright colour
and thick-material clothes especially if
you are doing a lot of cardio. Always
remember to apply mosquito repellents
and stick mosquito bikits to your
clothings before stepping out of your
home. From patches to sprays, bugslock
to bikits, choices are aplenty for you to
defend yourself against mosquitoes.
Health Tips – Monitor
Your Health
While common signs include fever, skin
rash, headaches and red eyes, four out
of five people do not know that they have
contracted the virus 2 as Zika symptoms
might not show in some people. If you
feel under the weather for more than
several days straight, especially those
coming back from countries with reported
Zika cases, make sure to monitor your
Whether or not you are planning to travel
to countries with Zika outbreaks, living in
a community without any known report
on the virus or feeling feverish without
Zika symptoms, it is always important to
keep in mind the mantra, “Prevention is
better than cure”. Being fully prepared
and equipped with necessary measures
to ensure a healthy living environment
for your family and community is the best
action thus far.
PREVENTION & Remedies
Childhood Eczema vs
Adulthood Eczema
Eczema is a chronic inflammatory,
relapsing and remitting skin disease that
affects about 20% of children and 3%
of adults. It is characterised by itching
and scratching resulting in eczematous
skin lesions. During the acute phase,
the lesions are red, with blister
formation and occasional oozing over
a background of dry and scaly skin.
However, persistent and chronic lesions
tend to be associated with pigmentation
and lichenification (thickened, hardened
and rough skin texture).
The most common type of eczema is
atopic eczema, a.k.a. atopic dermatitis
(AD) which usually affects children, but
can also affect adults. AD affects about
one in 5 children and about one in 12
adults in the UK. In children, the onset
often occurs between 3 and 6 months,
with about 60% developing the condition
before 1 year and 90% by 5 years
of age. Most patients have personal
or immediate family history of atopy
(allergic rhinitis and asthma).
AD in infants usually present with rashes
over the face and extensor areas with
an underlying generalised dry skin. They
usually improve remarkably between the
ages of 2-5 years.
Childhood AD may follow infantile AD,
or start between the age of 2 to 4 years.
The rashes are often found in the creases
of the neck, elbows, behind the knees
and across the ankles. This form of AD
usually improves with age. Although
some children will outgrow their AD, most
will continue to have dry and sensitive
skin into adulthood.
PREVENTION & Remedies
Dr Lee Yin Yin
Consultant Dermatologist
Sunway Medical Centre
It is estimated that approximately 10%
of adolescents continue to suffer from
eczema into adulthood.
Adult AD it is actually very similar to
that of AD in older children. The areas
of dry, itchy and reddened skin are
predominantly at the neck, elbow
creases, wrists, behind the knees and
around the ankles.
Although the terms eczema and
dermatitis are generally regarded
as synonymous, not all eczema can
be classified as atopic dermatitis.
Eczema can be broadly categorised as
exogenous or endogenous.
• Endogenous eczema – conditions
which are not a result of exogenous
or external environmental factors, i.e.
is mediated by processes originating
within the body, most commonly
atopic dermatitis (AD).
• Exogenous eczemas – conditions
that are related to clearly defined
external triggering factors, although
inherited tendencies can also play
a role. This group of disorder are
broadly sub-categorised as:
• Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD –
occurs when chemicals or physical
agents damage the surface of the
skin faster than the skin is able to
repair the damage. Irritants remove
oils and moisture from the outer
layer of the skin, allowing chemical
irritants to penetrate more deeply
and cause further damage by
triggering inflammation.
• Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD)
– occurs when a material (allergen)
comes in contact with the skin
causing an allergic reaction. It arises
some hours after contact with the
allergen, and settles down over a
few days, provided the allergen is
removed from the skin.
Signs to watch out for
Pruritus is always intense, with significant
effects on the activities of daily living,
psychological disturbance and sleep. In
adults, the disease affects different areas
of the body compared to the infants. The
hands, face and especially the eyelids
are most often involved, in addition to
skin creases and sometimes other areas.
Inflammatory flare-ups can affect skin all
over the body. This is called erythroderma.
These widespread conditions are serious,
and can become more complicated when
infections and metabolic disorders develop.
They may require hospitalisation with a
combination of intravenous, oral, topical
therapies with intensive skin nursing care.
Intravenous therapy includes intravenous
steroids with antibiotic. Oral therapy is
mainly anti histamine for itch control,
whereas topical treatment encompasses
emollients, steroid and antibiotic.
Why some suffer while
others don't?
The exact cause of AD is complicated
and not very clearly defined. It arises
because of a complex interaction of
genetic and environmental factors.
Two important hypotheses have
been proposed with regards to the
development of inflammation leading
to AD.
44 Natural Health * October 2016 VOL 73
PREVENTION & Remedies
The first hypothesis suggests a primary
immune dysfunction resulting in IgE
sensitisation, while second hypothesis
supports the theory of skin barrier
disturbance.
The primary immune dysfunction results
in an imbalance in the T-cell subsets,
leading to massive production of
inflammatory cytokines, causing an
increase in circulating IgE.
The skin barrier dysfunction hypothesis
suggests that AD patients develop AD as
a result of skin barrier defects that allow
for the entry of antigens, resulting in the
production of inflammatory cytokines.
Furthermore, filaggrin mutations are
associated with early-onset AD. One
mechanism by which filaggrin defects
may influence inflammation is by the
release inflammatory cytokines.
How to alleviate the symptoms and
remedies available:
• Avoidance of triggers known to
aggravate the disease severity e.g.
• extremes of temperature
• clothes that contain wool or other
irritant fibres
• harsh soaps and detergents
• keeping long finger nails
• contact with furry animals
• Keep your skin hydrated at all times
as eczema is a disease characterised
by impaired skin barrier function.
Therefore, there is increased transepidermal
water loss resulting in
constant dry skin. Emollients are
the cornerstone therapy for eczema
management.
• As eczema is an inflammatory skin
disease, topical steroids are important
to reduce the inflammation and itch in
addition to emollients.
• Topical immunomodulatory agents,
e.g. tacrolimus and pimecrolimus,
are suitable alternatives to topical
corticosteroids especially at creases,
face and genitalia as these agents do
not cause skin atrophy.
• Anti-histamines are helpful for pruritus
control and improve sleep at night.
Treat acute flares of eczema rapidly:
• Intermediate or high potency topical
steroids for short periods of time to
treat exacerbations.
• Oral or intravenous antibiotics as skin
infections with Staphylococcus aureus
may be a recurrent problem.
• Oral anti-viral therapy may be
required if there is secondary viral skin
infection e.g. herpes simplex virus.
When to seek medical
help?
Patients diagnosed with eczema will
be advised to be under the follow up
with their dermatologists or general
practitioner. This will improve long term
care and monitor acute flares early
during the course of disease.
Medical help is needed at different
stages of disease:
Initial stage:
• Patients and their family members
should be educated about the
chronic nature of eczema, and most
importantly the non-contagious nature
of this condition.
• They should be aware of aggravating
factors, and appropriate management
to achieve effective control of their
condition. This ensures cooperation
and improved compliance which
translates to better outcomes.
Patients should be exposed to
organisations and local support groups
to receive up-to-date information about
their condition.
Acute flares:
• Patients should be aware of the signs
and symptoms of an impending flare
of their condition.
• They may accelerate their therapy
during the initial stage, but they must
not hesitate to get professional support
when they are unable to control the
progression of disease.
• Different patients have different
Dr. Mohd Noor Hazrin bin Hashim
Resident Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
Sungai Long Medical Centre,
Bandar Sungai Long, Selangor.
Clinical scenario
Madam Kim is a 75 years old lady
who presented to a public hospital with
a painful right hip after a trivial fall at
home. She was diagnosed to have
a fracture of the neck of right femur.
She was then advised for a surgical
procedure to fix the fracture bone which
she agreed upon. However due to the
long waiting list of at least two weeks in
the public hospital before the surgery can
be performed, Madam Kim opted for
treatment in a private hospital instead.
Figure 1: Pre-operative pelvic x-ray
demonstrating a fracture of the right neck
of successful partial hip replacement femur
(white arrow).
Figure 2: Post-operative pelvic x-ray showing
with an implant in situ.
A partial hip replacement surgery was
carried out and Madam Kim recovered
well from the surgery soon after. She was
prescribed with a medication to reduce
the risk of recurrent fracture during her
follow up appointment in which she was
compliant for a brief period of time. She
did not return for subsequent follow up
and it is not known if she continues taking
the medication prescribed.
Scope of the problem
Ageing population
This is a common clinical scenario in
our community as far as osteoporosis
care and prevention is concerned.
The word osteoporosis literally means
“porous bones”. In simple term it means
that the bone becomes brittle and
weak, making it susceptible to fracture
when trivial trauma or minimal force
applied. Common osteoporotic fractures
include neck of femur fracture, vertebral
compression fracture and distal radius
fracture. These fractures are commonly
seen in our healthcare system as the
society ages and the life expectancy of
the population increases.
A data provided by Asia Pacific
Osteoporosis audit of Malaysia in 2013
shows that over the next four decades,
the number of Malaysian population
aged over 70 years is expected to
increase by 417%. This shows an
increment in number from 939,010 in
2013 to 4.8 million in 2050. The life
expectancy will also increase seven-years
longer than today, rising from 74 years
to 81 years. The graph shown below
(Figure 3) explains the rapid decline
of bone density with age which is the
hallmark feature of osteoporosis.
This phenomenon is seen more markedly
in women compared to men especially
after the age of 50. The increased
number of Malaysia’s greying population
would mean osteoporosis and its
complications would be a significant
burden in our healthcare system. It is
estimated that osteoporosis will result in
1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men to have
fracture. In Malaysia the cost of fracture
treatment is increasing. Some Malaysian
data have shown that a cost of operative
surgery for a hip fracture is around USD
6000 in private healthcare. It is much
cheaper in public hospitals but the
waiting list may take around two weeks
or more.
PREVENTION & Remedies
in bone mass density with age in men
and women
Who else are at risk?
Apart from increasing age there are also
several other factors that contributes to
the development of osteoporosis. These
factors are further divided into two broad
categories namely non-modifiable and
modifiable factors.
Non-modifiable factors
1. Advancing age
2. Ethnic group (Oriental & Caucasian)
3. Female gender
4. Premature menopause (< 45 years)
5. Slender build
6. Family history of osteoporosis in first
degree relative
Modifiable factors
1. Low calcium intake
2. Sedentary lifestyle
3. Cigarette smoking
4. Excessive alcohol intake
5. Excessive caffeine intake
What can be done?
Health education
As in any other significant health
problems the key for successful
intervention is to increase the awareness
level of our community through health
educations. Healthcare professionals
too need to be aware of this as they
are one of the key players in educating
patients regarding osteoporosis. Health
campaigns at every level need to be
done regularly by health authorities as
well as non-governmental organisations.
Public needs to be educated about
osteoporosis in general, its risk factors,
screening test available and prevention
as well as treatment.
Screening tests
Bone mineral density (BMD) is a
screening tool for osteoporosis. The
hallmark of osteoporosis is when there
is a significant reduction in BMD in
certain areas of our body. This test can
be easily done with various instruments
and it is affordable as some centres
provide this test for free. In general there
are two main screening modalities used
in Malaysia for BMD namely DEXA or
dual energy X-ray absorptiometry and
quantitative ultrasound. The former test is
the gold standard and widely available
in many hospitals and in some health
screening centres in Malaysia. The
ultrasound test is becoming popular
as it is portable and can be used for
screening in health promotion activities at
shopping malls and work places.
Figure 4: DEXA scan
Figure 5: QUS (quantitative ultrasound).
DEXA scan is used to screen those who
are at risks. If the test results show that
an individual has a significant low
bone density, then he or she need to
be started on treatment. DEXA scan is
also used to monitor those individuals
that are already on treatment; every
1-2 years after treatment starts. QUS
on the other hand does have a role in
mass public screening but any abnormal
test needs to be verified by a health
professional most of the time together
with a DEXA scan result.
There are other tests such as biochemical
blood test which measure the formation
and resorption of bone but they are
mainly for treatment monitoring and not
for making a diagnosis of osteoporosis.
Prevention of osteoporosis
Many studies have shown that
osteoporosis may be prevented and in
those who have established osteoporosis,
its complications such as fracture can be
prevented by taking several steps.
Calcium intake
In osteoporosis there is a net loss of
calcium from our body and evidence
has shown that an adequate intake of
calcium is positively correlated with good
bone mass. What is the adequate level
of calcium intake? It varies according to
age, gender and physiological status as
shown in the table nex page.
PREVENTION & Remedies
osteoporotic patients is related to a fall
as shown in the clinical case described
above. There are various factors that
can contribute to falling, such as poor
vision, poor balance, weak or painful
limbs and joints which may be difficult
to control and need advices from health
professionals for them to overcome.
There are also factors which are can be
easily managed and this is frequently
missed by patients and their caregivers.
Household hazardous environment such
as slippery floor, inadequate lighting,
steps, damaged carpets with curled
edges or loose and unsecured floor rugs
is associated with slipping and tripping.
It is important that this preventable cause
of fall is made aware to patients and
their caregivers to reduce the risks of
falling and possibly fractures.
Table 1: showing the recommended intake of elemental calcium according to respective categories.
It is recommended that daily calcium
intake is taken in the food form, however
calcium supplement is strongly advised
if daily calcium intake is inadequate.
Calcium supplements come in various
concentration therefore consultation with
qualified professional is recommended.
Vitamin D intake
Vitamin D is an important element in the
absorption of calcium from our gut. Those
who are exposed to adequate sunlight
(more than 15 minutes a day) should
have adequate level of Vitamin D in their
body but in individuals who are house
bound, sedentary and so forth Vitamin D
supplement is needed.
Exercise
Regular physical exercise is beneficial
not only for cardiovascular health
but in the prevention of osteoporosis
too. Weight bearing exercise such
as walking, hiking, jogging, climbing
stairs and dancing is the best exercise
for healthy bone. Needless to say
any physical activity to be carried out
need to discussed with relevant health
professionals to avoid problems.
Pharmacological treatment
Other than calcium and vitamin
D supplements there are specific
medications that are used by doctors
to prevent osteoporosis and reduce the
risks of fractures in those patients with
established osteoporosis. There are
various types of medications can be
used such as hormone replacement,
selective oestrogen receptor modulators,
biphosponates, strontium and parathyroid
hormone. Studies have shown that
medical treatment is cost-effective and
recommended to those who are at risks
of osteoporosis and its complications.
Prevention of fall
The most frequent cause of fractures in
Conclusion
The incidence of osteoporosis is on the
rise and it will have a big impact on
healthcare. Awareness of the members
of the public is very much important
in reducing the negative impact of
osteoporosis. The role of all healthcare
professionals, government agencies,
non-governmental organisations, media
and policymakers are also as important
to achieve this necessary goal. Those
who most affected by osteoporosis are
our senior citizens who have contributed
very much to the society and as a good
and caring society it is our job to ensure
our senior citizens is cared for the best
we can.
leading consumer brands worldwide.
Students Do Good For Children
July 30 – Make U Sense recently collaborated with Malaysia Lysosomal Dis-eases Association
(MLDA) and raised a grand total of RM1,075 to contribute their help to the rare disease,
Lysosomal Storage Diseases (LSD).
The final year Diploma students of IACT College created Make U Sense to do booth sales and
mini carnival to raise funds and at the same time raise awareness towards the life threatening
LSD which mostly affects children who often die at a young age, many within a few months
or years of birth. Conducting the campaign as part of their final project for their Event
Management and Public Relations Campaign Strategy class, the team of eight joined hands to
help MLDA. According to Ir Lee Yee Seng, the President of MLDA, every LSD patient needs at
least RM1,000,000.00 annually for their Enzyme Replacement Therapy (ERT). In order to help
LSD pa-tients for their cost of ERT, MLDA come out with “RM1 Every Life Counts” campaign
aiming to have 33,333 people to be a donor and donate with at least RM1 per day.
Across the Nation to Promote
Better Gut Health
20 Sept – This year, the VITAGEN Good Gut Health
Awareness campaign for schools will emphasise the
importance of identifying the 5 signs of good gut health
and the 5 simple steps to achieve it through interactive
workshops at selected primary schools, nationwide. The
campaign at Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Tun Dr. Ismail
(1) was a fun-filled session comprising an informative
talk on the signs of good gut health, followed by the 5
steps to achieve good gut health. Quizzes and games
to reinforce what the children had learned earlier were
next. A follow-along fitness session on abdominal
exercises to strengthen the core proved to be a fun
challenge for the kids.
The session came to an end with the free distribution of
VITAGEN presented by ‘Captain VITAGEN’, much to
the delight of the children. Children and teachers were
educated on the 5 signs of good gut health which are
clear skin with no blemishes, healthy stools and bowel
movements, mild-smelling breath, a stronger immune
system as well as mental clarity and alertness.
