Do Your Healthy Skin Justice
While people in the modern age are getting increasingly
particular about cosmetology, products that promise
immediate effects no longer could meet their demand. Instead,
what is crucial is its ability to provide long-term solutions for
maintaining young and glowing skin. In tropical countries with
hot and humid climate like Malaysia, maintenance of skin is
especially indispensable.
So what is the culprit behind old looking
skin?
The truth to the answer is that it is our very own body, and to
be exact, the dermis, that causes skin ageing. If we take a
look at our face, what we can see is only the outermost layer
of the skin known as epidermis. Most cosmetic products only
tackle this layer. However for thorough skin anti-ageing regime,
the only solution is none other than to go deep into the dermis
– the subsequent layer after epidermis. The dermis consists of
fibroblasts, a primary cell type that functions like a “factory”
producing three important structural components: collagen,
elastin, and hyaluronic acid. These are the three key elements
that keep our skin’s youthful vigour.
The reduced production of collagen and elastin, on top of
external and structural damages to these proteins, will also lead
to the decrease of hyaluronic acid content. As such, the skin
will gradually lose its elasticity and moisture.
Can Sunscreen Protect You from Cancer?
Sunscreen has been around for years, it is recommended by dermatologists and
doctors as a safe way to protect ourselves from the sun's harmful rays, so why
are people worrying about sunscreen and cancer?
There are a few important considerations you need to look at. Using higher SPF
sunscreens tends to fool most people into thinking they can stay in the sun
for longer periods of time and remain fully protected. This thinking overlooks
a simple reality - the longer you stay in the sun the greater your exposure is
to UVA rays which are now thought to play a much bigger role in causing skin
cancer and premature ageing. While you might enjoy some additional protection
from sunburn with a higher SPF, the increase in exposure to UVA that comes
from prolonged exposure may be putting you at a much higher risk.
Chemical sunscreens are not safe. If you've been buying sunscreens with
chemical ingredients, then your sunscreen is putting you at risk for cancer.
Chemicals in sunscreen can produce gender bending effects, and they can
also upset hormonal balance. Sunscreen can in fact be a cause for skin cancer
development!
Also, mounting scientific evidence shows a strong link between vitamin D
deficiency and cancer. What dermatologists don't tell us is that the vitamin D we
get from sunshine can also prevent serious cancers. Wouldn't it be wonderful if
we could prevent cancer by optimising vitamin D levels in the body?
Wishing you great health,
EUBOS UREA 5%
HAND CREAM
For Soft, Supple Hands
Many people disregard the necessity of daily care for their
hands as they do with their hair and face. This is surprising as
our hands endure through every day. Our hands are constantly
exposed to the elements thus receive rough treatment and unlike
other areas of the body they are often not protected from the
sun. They are susceptible to the ageing process with the skin
becoming loose, wrinkled with age spots and rough patches
appearing. A daily routine care using a good hand cream not
only protect them from further damage but can also repair by
smoothing, softening and rehydrating as well as toning and
firming the skin.
What are hand creams?
Hand cream is different from ordinary lotion. It is thicker,
contains water, essentials oils (if needed) and often natural
ingredients to enrich the cream with anti-ageing and vitamin
ingredients. Hand cream does not have to be an expensive
luxury cosmetic to benefit your hands.
EUBOS UREA series
The EUBOS Urea series for dry skin is a special care
formulation for dry and very dry skin, developed to enhance
their protective function. Purification of dry and very dry
skin requires an extremely special care, since a significant
reduction of lipid may be the cause of dry skin and may lead to
deterioration of skin condition, such as atopic dermatitis.
EUBOS UREA 5% Hand Cream is an effective protection
and basic care formulation for hands under stress, and is an
intensively moisturising care for very dry, rough and chapped
hands. It is rapidly absorbed and does not cause “greasy
fingers”. It promotes skin regeneration and protects the skin
from harmful substances, such as soaps, detergents, chlorine
and chemicals.
The specific composition of urea offers prolonged hydration,
while restoring valuable components of the lipids of the skin
and soothes irritated and stretched skin - ideal to keep rough
hands perceptibly healthy and smoother. Being water repellent,
it protects your hands like a pair of invisible gloves. What’s
more, it also can be used to soften dry cracked and rough skin
of the sole and toes.
The unique combination of vitamin E, panthenol, allantoin
and vitamin niacin contribute to the regeneration and
reconstruction of the skin. It is free from emulsion, perfume,
colourant and lanolin. Just a few applications are sufficient to
safeguard the skin and obtain softness and elasticity to have a
youthful appearance.
Olivenol ® Patented Olive Juice
Caring for Your Parents’ Joints & Health
The most common form of arthritis (or joint inflammation) is
osteoarthritis (OA), also known as degenerative joint disease,
a result of the breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage of
one or more joints. Incidences of osteoarthritis increase with
age due to simple “wear and tear” on the joints. Most people
over 60 have some degree of osteoarthritis, but it also affects
younger age group, even children, thankfully on a smaller
incidence.
Other forms of arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and
psoriatic arthritis, which are autoimmune disorders where the
body attacks itself.
Pain and swelling at joints, caused by inflammation, is often
a constant and daily feature of the disease. These symptoms
lead to limitations in physical functions, sufferers' mobility and
flexibility of conducting daily activities.
Our elderly parents have spent most of their lifetime working
hard to support the family. Many of them accept joint pain as
part of ageing that cannot be avoided and assume nothing can
be done about it. However, lifelong joint health is an important
part of everyone’s wellness, productivity, quality of life and
independence. Taking the right supplement will help.
You can always depend on OLIVENOL ®
OLIVENOL® which contains HIDROX®, consists of
hydroxytyrosol and other polyphenols in a precise and optimal
ratio to provide maximum efficacy for the health benefits and
goodness found in olive. With 300 times more antioxidant
activity than extra virgin olive oil, OLIVENOL® contains the
highest ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) level
among natural antioxidants 1 . Free radicals in our bodies are
produced either from cell metabolism or from external sources
such as pollution, cigarette smoke and radiation. They are toxic
and harmful to our skin as well as body and play a major part
in development of chronic and degenerative illness like ageing,
rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease and even cancer.
Hydroxytyrosol is proven to reduce inflammation 2 , enhance
cartilage repair and regeneration. At the same time, it increases
the synthesis of extracellular matrix and heals cartilage lesion
resulting in relieving joint stiffness, increasing joint flexibility and
mobility, and improve joint health 3 .
HIDROX® is olive juice that contains 98% the polyphenols
found in olives but minus the fats and calories! It is a potent
blend of Olive Juice that passed through a patented, natural
and chemical-free (without solvent and alcohol) process.
CAN YOU GET SKIN
CANCER IF YOU DON'T
APPLY SUNSCREEN DAILY?
Wearing sunscreen has dependably been synonymous with sun safety and skin cancer
protection, as it keeps the sun's harmful UVA and UVB rays from causing DNA damage. But
is our skin more susceptible to cancer if we don't utilise sunscreens day by day?
6 Natural Health * June 2016 VOL 69
NATURAL & Beauty
One of the benefits of
having Asian skin, because
of the way that it contains
more melanin (an effective
absorber of light) than
Caucasian skin, is that it
burns less effortlessly and
is accordingly less prone
to sun damage and skin
cancer. However, it can tan
more easily and perhaps
get stained.
However, since Asian skin is less
vulnerable to getting sunburn, we may
not understand the long-term risk from
being exposed to UV rays. For instance,
higher risk of skin tumour.
While it's demonstrated that sunscreens
do shield our skin from sunburn, shouldn't
something be said about the confirmation
for sunscreens shielding us from skin
cancer? With Malaysians being exposed
to the sun daily, does it truly make
a difference whether we utilise SPF
everyday or not?
Let's have a look at some of the facts:
1. Numerous sunscreens DO NOT
block Ultraviolet A radiation, which,
as the Journal of Investigative
Dermatology notes, does not
fundamentally bring about sunburn
but rather can expand the rate of
melanoma (a type of skin cancer)
and photodermatitis (sun poisoning).
Sunscreens
can wash off when
you sweat or swim and
then wipe off with a towel,
so they may need to be
reapplied more often –
be sure to read the
label.
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer
which forms from melanocytes
(pigment-containing cells in the
skin). Especially common among
Caucasians, particularly northern
Europeans, and northwestern
Europeans, living in sunny
atmospheres, Melanoma is less
common than other skin cancer.
However, it is much more dangerous
if it is not found in the early stages. It
causes the majority (75%) of deaths
identified with skin cancer. Australia
and New Zealand have the highest
rates of melanoma on the planet.
Say goodbye to
signs of ageing!
FINE Hyaluron &
is no odour or after taste. The
thus can be easily absorbed
six of Japan's strongest cosmetic
ingredients in FINE Hyaluron &
Collagen to effectively control spots
on skin, moisturise the skin, as well
as reduce wrinkles and dark circles,
among others.
Natural Health * June 2016 VOL 69
7
NATURAL & Beauty
Photodermatitis sometimes referred
to as sun poisoning or photoallergy is
an unfavourably susceptible contact
dermatitis in which the allergen must
be activated by light to sensitise the
hypersensitive reaction, and to bring
about a rash or other systemic effect
on subsequent exposure. The second
and subsequent exposures produce
photoallergic skin conditions which
are frequently eczematous.
2. Utilisation of sunscreen is
recommended by medical
organisations such as the American
Cancer Society since sunscreens
help in the aversion of squamous cell
carcinomas (one similar to the kind
of skin cancer that affected Hugh
Jackman's nose).
3. The utilisation of broad-spectrum
(UVA/UVB) sunscreens can address
melanoma and photodermatitis while
a diligent utilisation of sunscreen can
likewise moderate the advancement of
wrinkles and sagging skin.
Sunscreens with broad spectrum
protection (against UVA and UVB
rays) and with sun protection variable
(SPF) estimations of 30 or higher are
recommended. Use sunscreen even
on dim days or days with light or
broken cloud cover since UV rays still
can come through.
Always follow the direction while
applying sunscreen. Ideally, a oneounce
application (about a shot
glass or a palmful of sunscreen)
is prescribed to cover the arms,
legs, neck and face of an average
adult. Protection is greatest when
sunscreen is utilised thickly on all
sun-uncovered skin.
Sunscreens should be reapplied
no less than two hours to maintain
protection. Sunscreens can wash off
when you sweat or swim and then
wipe off with a towel, so they may
need to be reapplied more often – be
sure to read the label.
Some individuals use sunscreens to
stay out in the sun for long periods
of time without getting sunburned.
Sunscreen should not be utilised to
spend more time in the sun than you
otherwise would, as you will still end
up with damage to your skin.
4. While utilisation of sunscreens may
help reduce our exposure to UV light
and decrease our risk of melanoma,
it comes without guarantee. Besides,
if we stay in the sun for quite a while,
we are at risk of developing skin
cancer regardless of the fact that we
have put on sunscreen.
5. The cosmetics industry, over and over,
has insisted that it had never claimed
sunscreens could stop skin cancer
Dr. Chris Flower, director general of
the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery
Association, said: 'As cosmetic
producers, we never discuss cancer
in relation to the product - we can't
discuss protecting against or stopping
the disease.
"We never recommend that sun care
product should be utilised to stay out
in the sun longer, only as a part of
'sun safe' conduct, which incorporates
staying out of the sun during the hottest
part of the day, and covering up.
We can't utilise the expression "sun
block" or anything that suggest there
is 100 per cent assurance. We can't
say total protection; the strongest term
we can utilise is 'high' protection. The
principal line of defense is to avoid the
sun, the second is to cover up with a
sunhat, T-shirt and trousers, and the third
line of defense is to utilise a sunscreen."
FACT: In conclusion,
while sunscreens may not
prevent skin cancer, if not
utilised day by day, our
skin is more susceptible
to cancer. Therefore, not
utilising sunscreen day by
day can bring about skin
cancer.
The Skin Cancer Foundation prompts
everybody to take after its extensive
prevention guidelines, which suggest
wearing sunscreen, alongside practicing
other sun safety habit.
We tend to think we are strong when we
apply sunscreen onto our body every two
hours in its most astounding SPF form, yet
the more we're out in the sun, the more
we're increasing our UV ray exposure.
Wearing a cap, baggy garments, and
looking for shade when the sun is at its
highest point are some tips to remember,
and can diminish the 3.5 million skin
cancers cases diagnosed every year.
A persevering, regular utilisation
of sunscreen can also moderate or
temporarily prevent the development
of wrinkles and sagging skin. In the
end, here's a melody about sunscreen.
It has no direct correlation to wearing
sunscreen, yet it does dispense sound life
guidance. Enjoy!
HEALTH & Wellness
Unfortunately, it seems like the
haze is back and once again we
have to fight this (almost) invisible
threat. The stores are filled with all
sorts of air masks and air purifiers
and sales of these products have
certainly gone through the roof.
Well, the truth is, this is not just
a vain marketing trend. Indeed,
these products have become a
necessity. Let’s find out more about
air purifiers and we can combat
the threats of haze with them.
FIGHT HAZE!
Breathe easier with
the right air-purifier
12 Natural Health * June 2016 VOL 69
HEALTH & Wellness
What is haze and why
you need an air purifier?
If you don’t already know it, which is
very unlikely, haze refers to the heavily
polluted and “dirty” air that we are
breathing right now. During a haze, the
air is filled with microscopic particles
that can put your health in real danger.
The common knowledge is that the haze
is most damaging to people suffering
from respiratory diseases, but medical
doctors confirm that everyone is at risk.
These particles are so tiny that they can
enter the bloodstream and once they
get there they can become the trigger
of some extremely dangerous and even
fatal conditions, such as strokes or heart
attacks. If the particles reach the lungs,
they can induce asthma-like symptoms,
such as wheezing, coughing and
shortness of breath.
So, in order to avoid this exposure as
much as possible, doctors recommend
using devices that help clean the air
from the micro-particles. Dr Philip Eng,
a consultant respiratory physician at
Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore
said, regarding to air purifiers, that„ the
best benefit is for those with chronic heart
and lung problems”, but also added
that these devices are highly useful for
all types of individuals, especially when
haze levels are very high.”
Different types of air
purifiers
There are several different types of
air purifiers, and according to HN
Feng, senior air treatment specialist
at indoor air quality company Air &
Odor Management, Singapore, these
different filters functions range from
purifying and deodorising the air to
removing bio-contaminants.
First, there are the high efficiency
particulate air (HEPA) filters that can
trap particles of 0.1 to 0.3 microns
within their fiberglass meshes. Due to the
functionality of this filter, Dr Jason Phua,
head and senior consultant in the division
of respiratory and critical care medicine
at the National University Hospital,
Singapore recommended everyone to
consider an indoor air purifier that is
fitted with a HEPA filter.
Another type are the ultraviolet (UV)
filters which also aim at killing bacteria,
viruses and mould, thus sterilising the air,
or the photocatalytic filters that are able
to turn other dangerous gases, besides
the micro-particles, into less harmful
compounds. Besides these, there are
also the activated carbon filters that work
mainly by deodorising the air, or the
ionisers, which create ions that attract
the dust and the particles. These ions
become heavier and heavier and they
eventually fall onto the floor or stick to
walls, from where they can be easily
cleaned away.
What to look for when
choosing an air purifier?
Dr Ang Keng Been, president of Indoor
Air Quality Society Singapore, suggests
that the best option for an indoor
space would be a device that has two
incorporated filters: HEPA and carbon
based. She further explains that the other
various characteristics of filters, such as
UV light or ionisers, for example, can
help and improve the process of purifying
the air, but are not sufficient on their own.
In line with this recommendation is
also Joe Eades, a member of the
Health, Safety and Environmental
Technical Committee at The Institution
of Engineers, Singapore, who advices
that, consumers should avoid selecting
Natural Health * June 2016 VOL 69
13
HEALTH & Wellness
ionisers as they are only good for
removing bacteria and viruses but have
no effect on removal of particulates”.
However, besides the already
mentioned criteria, there are several
more factors that you should take into
account when choosing the right air
purifier. One of the most important
factors for an effective cleaning is the
size of the device. You can choose
smaller ones for smaller rooms, like a
bedroom, or children’s room, but for a
larger space, like a living room or an
office, you should look for a bigger
air purifier or, at least, two small ones.
Usually, you can find these indications
within the product descriptions.
Also, you should choose a machine that
enables a high level of air flow through
it, so that it can clean most particles,
but this could also result in the device
making more noise. This could get really
disturbing in a bedroom, for example,
so the airflow and the decibels are
another aspect you should also pay
attention to.
And last but not least, you should also
check the price. Air purifiers that have
more features are usually more pricey,
but most of the time you don’t really
need all of them. More important is
to check how much it will cost you to
replace the filters because most of them
need to be replaced after six months
or up to two years of usage in order to
keep being efficient.
The most effective ways
to use air purifiers
For a maximum result, it is generally
advisable to use the air purifier in a room
with shut windows and doors and with
air conditioning. The best thing to do is
to prevent the air flow from the outside
because it would be a continuous source
of pollution, regardless of the purifier
you are using. However, if you cannot
use air conditioning continuously, the
compromise is having the windows
just slightly opened in order to create
minimum ventilation in the room. Also,
keep in mind that you need an air purifier
for each room, as the devices do not
work across walls.
Regarding the time the air purifier should
be kept on, Dr Ang says it is enough
to have it working only while you are
in the room. The effect of a purifier is
basically instant and continuous only as
long as the device is on, so keeping it
plugged in while no one is in the room
is a waste of resources.
Of course, no device can promise
to cleanse the air 100% but we are
constantly looking for the best options
to clean the air we breathe and, at the
moment, these are what we have. As a
last piece of advice, in order to increase
the efficiency of the air purifiers as much
as possible, the best thing to do, besides
following the information given here, is to
follow the specific instructions that come
with each product.
THE RISING COST
OF HEALTHCARE
Are You Covered?
GST is only exempted for basic life insurance that cover natural
death such as whole life plan, endowment plan, term insurance
(including mortgage insurance), education plan, annuity
products and investment-linked policies. Premiums for Non-life
riders insurances which do not cover natural death such as
critical illness, medical and health, and personal accident are
subjected to GST.
The implementation of GST has directly and indirectly affected
medical charges. Other than the direct charges of 6% GST
on certain items, the medical charges will also include the
increased overhead expenses of the specialist centre/private
hospital post GST.
Removal of Haemorrhoid/Piles
In December 2015, my client Ms. A did a surgery to remove
haemorrhoid in a specialist day care centre. She spent
RM10,000 for a day care surgery. Another client who removed
piles pre GST spent about RM8,000 with medical card for a
two days stay in the hospital.
According to Ms. A, there are few ways to remove piles. The
simplest way is Rubber Band ligation (RBL). This is the cheapest
procedure which may only cost few hundred ringgit
including doctor consultation but normally patient will feel
uncomfortable on the first day. The current trend is using Laser
Hemorrhoidoplasty Procedure (LHP), a so called painless way
to remove piles.
Initially Ms. A decided to remove her piles with RBL. However,
her doctor kept persuading her to use LHP and assured that she
will not suffer any pain with LHP. Ms A finally decided to use
LHP because it was covered under her insurance but due to it
was a day care procedure she had to pay and made claim
based on reimbursement basis.
Unfortunately, it was a failed surgery. She suffered two weeks of
severe pain. If she had stuck to her initial decision, she would
have only suffered one day of discomfort after doing Rubber
Band ligation (RBL). She was disappointed that the doctor never
informed her of the consequences if the surgery failed.
I believe the doctor also felt the pressure after the
implementation of GST, therefore the doctor was desperate
to close ‘big business’ and neglected his code of ethics as a
doctor and forgotten to highlight his disclaimer.
Removal of Polyp Behind Ear Drum
My immediate relative did a surgery to remove a polyp behind
his ear drum in a popular specialist centre in Nov 2015.
This specialist centre is not a panel hospital of the insurance
company that my relative insured with.
The hospital charges were a bit messy. The hospital charged a
“refundable” advance lab fee of RM1,000 for a sample less
than 5mm. When the lab report was issued, I requested the
actual lab charges and looked forward to get a refund of the
advance payment.
The Relationship Manager told me that there was no refund
because the lab fee “have exceeded” RM1,000 but they
have never collected the outstanding balance from the patient.
I could not accept this kind of answer. I understand that a
polyp sample for which the lab report could be issued in two
days does not require complicated procedures. Therefore, the
cost should not exceed RM1000. I requested her to check the
actual fee for me. Unfortunately, there was no reply from her
for a week.
The story did not end here. There were a total of three over
charged items. To cut the story short, without me insisting to find
out the details, the manager will not look into my complaint and
will give different excuses to avoid finding out details. Finally,
my immediate relative got a refund of nearly a thousand.
I strongly believe that it was not a mistake. It was the
uncooperative attitude of the staff. What made the
Relationship Manager to give excuses that they do not collect
outstanding lab fee from the patients and the doctor has no
knowledge of reasonable lab charges? Why she took a week
but still no answer for me? But when she was willing to help,
she can give me the answer within an hour. What does it
imply? I won’t be surprised if the staff members are worried of
no bonus or lesser bonus if the hospital makes lesser profit? As
everyone is new to GST.
Imperceptibly, patients are paying more without them realising.
This cost will fall back to insurance company. If the claim is
too high, insurance company will transfer the cost back to life
assured by increasing the premium. Therefore, patients should
learn how to check their medical bills regardless whether they
have a medical card or not. Please do not think that your bill
is paid by insurance company, you do not need to care how
much hospital is charging you. The increased medical fee
will certainly give an impact to health insurance’s premium
(commonly known as Medical Insurance).
The second week, I checked with the doctor, the doctor told
me that it should only cost about slightly more than a hundred.
When I spoke to the manager again, she replied me that “the
doctor does not know about lab charges”.
I was very disappointed with her answer and told her that if the
hospital over charged the patient, the insurance company will
not reimburse the over charged cost. She did not believe and
immediately checked with her colleague. The staff replied her
with the same answer. Finally, she helped me to check with the
lab. Guess what? The actual cost was only RM130!
The Effects of GST on Your Insurance
Premium
After the implementation of GST, health insurance premium has
a direct increase of 6% on the old policy. However, the trend is,
more and more insurance companies are upgrading their health
insurance plan to cater for the market needs by increasing the
claim limit. You can easily find plans with million annum limit.
16 Natural Health * June 2016 VOL 69
HEALTH & Wealth
By upgrading the old plan, insurance companies have a good
reason to review their premium.
For new health insurance plans, some plans cover GST, some
do not. If the plan does not cover GST, it does not necessary
mean that the premium should be lower as compared to the
plan that covers with GST. There are many factors to determine
the premium of a medical plan.
If you are lucky to be one of the clients who is offered to
upgrade your medical policy with free underwriting, you should
take up the offer if your current plan is low in coverage. As
reported in The Star paper in 2009, medical inflation rate in
Malaysia is estimated to be around 15% per annum. I believe
the medical inflation rate will be higher post GST.
the lowest Room and Board (R&B) package of a full claim
plan and the highest R&B package of a deductible plan. This
combination of plans give you high limits at low premium.
You have to make sure the benefit of the deductible plan is
working in conjunction with the full claim plan. In case the
premium of the full claim plan is too high in the future you can
opts to keep the deductible plan which is cheaper. However,
you must pay the excess amount for each and every hospital
admission. You will only be able to claim the amount that is
above the deductible amount. I believe paying RM5,000
upon admission would be cheaper than paying RM10,000
to RM40,000 yearly premium. This would be the cheapest
long term plan for a less affordable individual to buy medical
insurance policy. However, this planning may not suit
everybody as different people have different situations.
Government Hospital may have the best equipment but may
not have the best doctor. The best equipment cannot treat a
patient without an experienced doctor. The higher the medical
fee, the more we have to rely on medical insurance coverage.
Having a medical insurance policy is the best way to transfer
our financial risk.
Generally, you have two options to buy a medical policy. A
standalone plan and a plan that attached to an investment
linked product. Standalone plan is cheaper at entry age, but it
will increase gradually. You have to make sure that you will be
able to pay the future increased premium at your old age. The
premium can easily be more than RM10,000 to RM40,000
per annum.
It is a bit complicated to explain investment linked plan, but
bear in mind that the cost of insurance of a medical plan
that attached to an investment linked is not fixed. It is also
increased from time to time. If the unit value accumulated in
the plan is not enough to cover the future increased premium,
the policy will lapse, unless life assured continue paying the
yearly increased premium.
If the premium is too expensive to you, you may consider
buying two stand alone plans that are a full claim plan and
a deductible plan (for example: RM5000 deductible). Buy
Yoga is an art form that stands on the strong pillars of meditation and spirituality
achieved through strong physical exercises and synchronised breathing patterns.
Born in the ancient Indian subcontinent, it spread across the western world in the
early 1980’s as travellers explored the world of yogis who were found practicing
the art in the more deeper valleys of India, Nepal, China, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan.
Today, the world truly believes in the psychological as well as physiological
healing benefits through the processes that Yoga brings about in the human
body, mind, and soul. As we learn deeper about the positive effects of Yoga and
the popularity surges for being not only an excellent stress-buster but also a tool to
transform your livelihood in a fast-paced competitive world, we acknowledge the
importance of this cultural emergence through exchange of ancient practises and
knowledge on June 21 that marks International Yoga Day. Let’s look at the various
yoga forms being taught today and one that fits you.
Hatha Yoga Builds
your physical and
mental strength
Practiced amongst
generations of yogis, it is the
most generically popular form
of Yoga. The modern styles
existing in present century
derive sources from the laws
of the Hatha form. Meant
for beginners, the “Hatha”
style will work great for
you as it mainly focuses on
postures that include basic
contortions of muscles that
connect the very joints of
your limbs and other body
parts. The yoga guru teaches
you to concentrate on his/
her breathing technique as
they meditate in a certain
posture. Therefore, Hatha
yoga can be termed as the
physical practice of yoga
that brings about slowpaced
understanding of
the combination of moves
involved as well as igniting
the energy channels that exists
within the body.
Vinyasa Yoga Use of
physical transitions
in a special way
The Vinyasa form of the yoga
technique is ideal for those
looking to find body rhythm
and flow. The exercises of
the Vinyasa style compose
a combination of fluid body
movements that transcend
from one posture (asanas) to
another in synchronisation with
every inhaling or exhaling
breath induced (pranayama).
As your body progresses
through the variety of
movements in this nature, your
sweat glands perspire in the
processes that not only help
in flexibility but also agility
of body limbic functions. It is
a great style to start with as
it progresses through higher
levels and steps. Vinyasa
yoga forms the basis for many
yoga styles that exists today.
Krishnamacharya, considered
the architect of Vinyasa has
attempted feats such as
“stopping heartbeats” and has
travelled the world-teaching
individuals, is widely credited
for reviving Hatha Yoga.
Ashtanga Yoga
Modern form of
the ancient Indian
classical yoga
The Ashtanga yoga is a
modern form of exercise
incorporating gymnastics
established in late 20th
Century. Yogi K. Pattabhi
Jois codified the practises of
this style as he studied yoga
from the mere age of 12 in
1927. By 1948, Ashtanga
yoga was a popular Vinyasa
style, which takes you through
successive poses used in
transitions at a rapid pace.
The method composes of
eight special poses that
include first two limbs known
as Yama and Niyamas
practiced in synchronisation
with the third and fourth limbs
that are the asanas and
pranayama respectively.
Iyengar Yoga The
art of perfection
and discipline
The Iyengar style of yoga,
named after its founder, B.K.S.
Iyengar, is all about alignment
and correctness of posture. This
form of yoga derives its very
basic nature from Hatha Yoga
improvising in the process with
the use of props that aid in
precision of postures. Blocks,
straps, harnesses, rollers,
chairs, and boards are the
properties used to carry out
exercises in variation.
Understanding of one’s body
builds through a series of
200 poses and 14 different
“pranayama” (breathing)
techniques that range from
basic to advance. This is close
to the Ashtanga principle
where specific asana are
linked together in order to
achieve. The practitioner
utilises these movements in
order to stimulate muscle
strength, mobility of joints and
body awareness.
Bikram Yoga
The “Hot Yoga”
that heals from
inside out
The purpose of Bikram Yoga
is cleansing deep-rooted body
toxins. The series incorporates
26 principle exercises and
two breathing cycles as the
method for exercising through
an ideal class or session.
Performed in a room where
the maintained temperatures
are at 40.6 degrees
Celsius with 40% humidity,
the intended process aims
towards building stamina by
catalysing body metabolism.
The heat induced causes
intense perspiration as the
warmth seeps deeply into
your muscles causing them
to relax even further as the
result reckons extension in
stretches. This is indeed the
“Hot Yoga” meant for heavy
gym trainers, sport people,
dancers, or athletes. Pregnant
women and heart patients
should be wary, as it is not
recommended for them.
Power Yoga A
strategic form for
both a spiritual core
and a fit body
The history of Power Yoga
is a strong blend of western
and eastern minds. The
development of this yoga
style is the genius of twofamed
yogis, Bryan Kest from
Los Angeles & Beryl Bender
Birch from New York. As
under the tutelage of Yoga
re-invent those principles in
combining them with Vinyasa
and develop a more intense,
flowing style that has now
known in the American gyms
as modern day yoga.
The chanting and meditational
frequencies of this highly
physical style is rather less.
Kundalini Yoga To
activate your “third”
eye senses
Kundalini in the Sanskrit
language refers to the chakra
or “energy wheel” located
at the bottom-most end of
your spine. Hence, one can
imagine that this practice of
yoga awakens the hidden
unconscious presence of the
mind. The various sequence
of poses inscribed in the
process include meditation,
pranayama, chanting mantras
and asanas which combine
to tap the deeper-most human
about the passivity in feminine
quality and their energies
that make up a part of the
Universe. The philosophy
characterises the world as a
that harness energy channels
Yin Yoga style uses prolonged
meditative practices that
require high amount of
patience.
potential focussing on values
that teach mankind to serve
and heal others.
It is a synchronised
combination of the oldest
forms of Tantric Yoga (Laya
Yoga) and Hatha Yoga. Ideal
for those who are looking to
find more meaning into their
lives as the style aims at an
individual being absorbed by
the universe and becoming
one with himself/herself.
of your body’s true Prana
(life or being). Practitioners
discipline themselves into
evolving their minds towards
inner peace and focus.
Meditation, breathing work,
relaxation, and standard
yoga poses encompass the
true meaning of this practice.
If you are someone looking
to find soul and compassion
within yourself as well as
becoming more observant
without judgement and
absolute for you.
Yin Yoga To channel
the sacred feminine
energy within your
“Yin” is a word derivative of
traditional Chinese cultures
talking about “Yin & Yang,”
described as opposite forces
A regular practitioner is
habituated to hold in poses
quieten their minds with
meditation and find a way
to talk to their own bodies as
the principles applied release
the measurable tensions
built in overworked joints.
The comprising poses are
inspired from Taoist traditions
designed to target your core
and stress-related areas of
the body - pelvic girdle or
Practicing the Yin theory
on the connective tissues in
the body.
Raymond: Vinyasa Flow, Hatha Yoga, Yin Yoga and
How is your form of Yoga different
from any other type of Yoga?
Angeline: My teaching style infuses an authentic,
functional and classical approach to Yoga based on
my foundational studies in Mysore, India, as well as
personal exploration from 16 years of practice. My
passion is to make Yoga accessible to practitioners
of all levels, by focusing on our unique anatomical
differences, and the energetic alignment of body
with breath, Prana and mind.
Raymond: My aim is to help practitioners, regardless
of body size and capabilities, to develop a breathinitiated
mindful Yoga practice, with emphasis on
safety, alignment and gradual progression. “Going
slowly, steadily and never rushing” is my teaching
philosophy.
Why should one start on Yoga?
“Yoga for Everyone” is our life and teaching
philosophy at Prana Yoga KL. The ultimate purpose
of Yoga is awareness, mindfulness and ultimately
inner bliss. The gateway to all of this is through the
physical practice of asana. You do not have to be
young, flexible, supple or fit to start a Yoga practice.
You start from where YOU are at this point in time.
Each individual works within his/her own level of
comfort and physicality. Yoga is non-competitive, and
it does not discriminate. Our practitioners range from
newborns to senior citizens, including those seeking
rehabilitation from injuries or trauma. Yoga is the
path to living a healthier, better and happier life.
What form of Yoga do you teach?
I was trained in two different forms of Yoga - Shivananda Yoga
and Iyengar Yoga. But I chose to call my Yoga as Yoga. The
names may differ but the goal is the same. I teach mainly from
my own experience of what needs to be taught that day. Every
class of mine is different as I see progress is essential.
How is your form of Yoga different from
any other type of Yoga?
The way I approach the poses, breathing and meditation may
differ from other types of Yoga. I believe in a more systematical
and methodical way of teaching. As progress in the practice
is essential for me and my students, I use props to make the
students understand the poses, so that they are safe while
practicing, and they understand what they are doing.
Why should one start on Yoga?
Because Yoga has so much benefits to offer. By studying Yoga
philosophy itself one can understand the body mind complex.
By practicing the Asanans and Pranayams the body health is
restored. Health is essential for all no matter where we are or
what we believe in. Yoga is definitely a shower of grace to the
world. It is a universal prayer.
What form of Yoga do you teach?
Ashtanga Yoga, in its authentic form as taught by the K.
Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (KPJAYI) in Mysore, India.
How is your form of Yoga different from
any other type of Yoga?
Ashtanga Yoga is one of the last remaining forms of Yoga
that remains protected by lineage holders and passed down
by generations of great yogis in India. It is different in many
ways from what is available in the present day Yoga, but
most notably differentiated by how it is taught individually to
a student’s capacity with no one to watch or follow and in
Ashtanga Yoga, you have to practice daily for years, then daily
for months over at least four years at KPJAYI to be considered to
teach the system.
Why should one start on Yoga?
Mahatma Gandhi said it best when he said "Be the change
you want to see in this world". Now more than ever the
world needs change, the destruction of the world is a result of
disconnection to ourselves. The only way to reverse this vicious
cycle is to have a practice which focuses on allowing us to
know ourselves better (Yoga happens to be not the only, but a
great tool for this process) and hopefully as a result we emerge
from a stronger place to make calmer choices. We need to
practice Yoga to make us, everyday life, everyone around us
and the rest of the world just a little more bearable.
What form of Yoga do you teach?
The student must not fit the Yoga but the Yoga must fit the student
– this is the style I follow. It depends on who is attending and
what they need. I am highly inspired by Ashtanga Vinyasa,
Andiappan Yoga (Therapeutic style) and Manasa Yoga. Posture
practice in my classes is centred on breath awareness in the
backdrop of teachings from Yoga philosophy. Meditation is
integrated in the practice.
How did Yoga change your life?
Thanks to Yoga - from being an extremely short tempered
person, lacking tolerance I seem to have gone through a
“system upgrade” where things don’t bother me as easily. I am
more joyful! In terms of my body I am far fitter. I have never
been “physically inclined” so my body was not so capable.
Then Ashtanga Vinyasa was offered to me so beautifully that a
non exercise oriented person like me fell in love with the most
demanding of Yoga styles! My body changed dramatically.
Foods that were unhealthy and addictive have on their own left
me without any effort on my part. I feel like life supports me,
there is greater ease on a day to day basis. I have found much
clarity and greater focus.
Why should one start on Yoga?
You need Yoga if you want:
• Physical and mental health
• Create the life that you want. Yoga gives us necessary tools
• If you are well and want to enhance your life
• Experience greater grace in your life
I teach Hatha Yoga.
How is your form of Yoga different from
any other type of Yoga?
Like different types of food appeal to different people, different
styles of Yoga will suit people of different temperaments,
different ages or body types. Hatha Yoga, in particular in
a beginners’ class, is a comparatively slow paced style that
allows the student to absorb the intricacies of the postures,
minimising the risk of injuries.
How did Yoga change your life?
My journey has been about learning to flow with life, letting go
of expectations, about facing fears and challenges and about
finding and walking my own path. Yoga and Life are the same.
Why should one start on Yoga?
Similar to the whole universe always striving for harmony, we
too should work towards harmony in all aspects of life. Yoga
teaches us step by step how to find that balance. It is as if
Asana practice is waking up our body’s own intelligence and
once we start following that, instead of the cues of our ego or
anyone around us, we will start making better and healthier
choices in our life.
Fit in 60 seconds:
How 1 minute of intense
exercise can boost health
If you put off exercise due to time constraints, then you may
need to find another excuse. A new study suggests just 1 minute
of vigorous exercise three times weekly can benefit health
just as much as longer, conventional endurance training. In a
previous study, the researchers found that sprint interval training
(SIT) produced significant health benefits.
This 10-minute training programme included three 20-second
"all-out" cycle sprints, performed in between 2 minutes of
low-intensity cycling. The programme also included a 2-minute
warm-up and a 3-minute cool down.
"This is a very time-efficient workout strategy," notes lead author
Martin Gibala, professor of kinesiology at McMaster University
in Ontario, Canada.
As fitness levels rise,
diabetes risk drops
A higher level of heart-lung fitness may reduce your risk for
prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, new research finds. The
study provides evidence to support the widely held belief
"that fitness is beneficial in reducing the risk for prediabetes/
diabetes," said Dr. Lisa Chow, from the University of
Minnesota, and colleagues.
That higher level of fitness required either vigorous exercise
for 30 minutes a day, five days a week, or moderate
exercise for 40 minutes a day, five days a week, the
researchers said. "As this benefit remained significant even
when adjusting for BMI, exercise programs remain critically
important for reducing the development of prediabetes and
diabetes," the study authors concluded.
Dark chocolate: a boost for
athletes' performance?
Too sporty to indulge in chocolate? Think again, says research published
in The Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition. The findings
suggest that a little dark chocolate may improve performance in fitness
training. One of the flavanols in the cocoa bean and in dark chocolate is
epicatechin. Epicatechin increases the production of nitric oxide in the body.
Sport analysis lecturer James Brouner, who is also an ultra-distance runner,
says the research suggests that dark chocolate could be beneficial for
endurance athletes. Brouner notes that it is important for endurance athletes
to be as efficient as possible. He adds that many athletes consume beetroot
juice for this purpose but do not enjoy the flavor. Dark chocolate could offer
the same benefits, but with a better taste.
AGEING MALE
& SEXUAL
DYSFUNCTIONS
What to watch
out for
Ageing is a natural process, but to some
extent, it still manages to take people by
surprise. General understanding states
that men have a more difficult time than
women adapting to the changes imposed
by age. This goes back to a 1996
article published in Geriatric Nursing
that said that “Research has shown that
men generally have a harder time in
adjusting to the changes [of ageing].
Conditioned throughout their lives to be
strong, controlling, and independent,
men can be devastated by the losses that
are associated with ageing.”
May that statement from 20 years
ago still be accurate or not, the fact is
that ageing can be quite a challenge
for anybody, regardless of their sex.
Bodies change, social and professional
responsibilities change as well and it is
perfectly normal to experience some level
of worry or anxiety regarding this matter.
However, there is one subject that is
usually considered taboo when it comes
to older people, and that is sexual
activity and sexual dysfunctions. Research
has shown that, indeed, the tendency
for the sexual activity is to decrease with
age, even though age-related changes
are not necessarily preventing sexual
activity. Still, here we reached to the most
sensitive point regarding the sex life of an
ageing male: sexual dysfunctions.
What are sexual
dysfunctions?
Sexual dysfunctions are those phenomena
that occur and that disrupt the normal
sexual pattern between partners. Many
times, the cause of sexual dysfunctions
is related to or augmented by several
other factors, besides normal ageing.
Most commonly, the causes regard the
lifestyle or can have a psychosocial or
psychiatric basis, such as anxiety or
depression. Ageing-related changes
together with these additional factors,
that are also more prevalent in older
people, can, indeed, lead to various
sexual dysfunctions. So, let’s see which
are the more common sexual complaints
and how do they manifest.
• Low sex drive
Low sex drive or the lack of libido is
most often associated with various
psychological reasons rather than
physical impediments. Anxiety, a
detrimental physical status that may
or may not be related to ageing,
the relationship between partners,
including unresolved issues, or most
importantly, communication issues are
the most common factors that lead to
the loss of sexual desire. Of course,
other age-related comorbidities,
especially if the man in cause
has a history of smoking, alcohol
consumption or a sedentary lifestyle
can aggravate this condition.
Low libido can also be associated
with too low levels of testosterone,
which naturally occur when ageing.
However, this becomes a problem
only if the levels of testosterone drop
under a certain limit, in which case a
physician would usually diagnose the
problem as a medical condition and
propose the right treatment.
• Erectile dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction is defined as
an inability to have or to sustain an
erection for long enough to have a
satisfactory intercourse in at least
50% of the attempts to engage in
sexual activities. Just like in the case
of low libido, erectile dysfunctions
most often occur on a background
of psychological stress, and it is not
excluded to be another “side-effect” of
low sex drive per se.
However, for a man who suddenly
starts experiencing this condition, it
could also be a warning sign
Prof. Dr. Zulkifli Md. Zainuddin
Deputy Dean and Director of Human Resource
Development and
Senior Consultant Urologist, UKM
Quoted at ED-ucation for a Healthy Marriage event on
April 4, 2016 conducted by Pfizer Malaysia
Talk about sexual problems in an open and
supportive way
“As a urology consultant, I’ve met many patients who have faced ED which have
led to relationship problems and relationship dissatisfaction due to their inability
to verbalise the problem. The low self-confidence that men feel due to their ED
creates a challenge for men to make that decision to see a doctor – here’s where
I feel partners can play an important role. By being supportive and encouraging,
you can help your partner garner the courage he needs to see a doctor and
address the problem.”
“After all, we need to be aware that ED is our body’s way of telling us that
something is not right. ED is often a pre-cursor to other problems such as
cardiovascular disease. It is important that men feel that they can approach
proper channels of consultation to
address their health problems. From
my experience, spouses often are the
key person to encourage their partners
to seek proper treatment from the
proper channels. We need to look at
this not from a perspective of a ‘aged
disease’ but to a ‘lifestyle disease’ so
men will not feel judged and will be
more open towards receiving and
seeking treatment.”
However,
for a man
who suddenly
starts experiencing
this condition, it could
also be a warning sign
regarding other more
important health
issues.
regarding other more important health
issues. Erectile dysfunctions, especially
in ageing males, are often associated
with cardiovascular diseases,
diabetes mellitus, hypertension or
even neurological disorders. It is
not excluded that some specific
medication recommended for other
health problems might induce this
unpleasant side-effect, but this is
usually mentioned by the doctor
recommending such medications.
• Premature ejaculation
Next to the two already mentioned
sexual dysfunctions, the other
most common problem in bed is
premature ejaculation. This condition
is defined as the incapacity to
delay ejaculation, which happens
very soon after or even before the
30 Natural Health * June 2016 VOL 69
SPECIAL
intercourse is initiated. However,
in contrast to the other two most
common examples of sexual
dysfunction, this one does not appear
more often in older men, but it seems
to have the same frequency for all
age categories.
Unfortunately, premature ejaculation is
also one of the least diagnosed sexual
dysfunctions, despite the fact that
there are effective treatments for it. It is
not yet clear if this happens because
clinicians overlook it or because
patients simply don’t mention it. Most
probably, it is a combination of both.
An interesting thing to notice is that
premature ejaculation is usually
followed by feelings of frustration and
distress, which are also, most of the
time, at the basis of this condition. It’s
really like running in a circle of anxiety
that… boosts your anxiety!
How can you fight
sexual dysfunctions?
So, after all this talk about sexual
dysfunctions, what are the solutions out
there? It is obvious that ageing males
(ageing people, in general) should enjoy
and benefit from a healthy sexual life.
And solutions exist, some of them even
being a lot simpler than one may expect.
Probably, the best first step would be
to talk and share your problems with
your partner or spouse, if you are ever
faced with such issues. Many times, an
open and sincere discussion can work
wonders. Good communication or, better
said, the lack of good communication
is at the root base of many problems in
bed, including sexual dysfunctions.
Apart from this, trying to meditate or to
make healthier lifestyle choices could
have a beneficial effect on your sex life
Good
communication
or, better said,
the lack of good
communication is at
the root base of many
problems in bed,
including sexual
dysfunctions.
by minimising the effects of ageing, if
you consider this to be an important
part of the problem. You could start by
quitting bad habits such as smoking,
drinking too much alcohol or having too
many sleepless nights and, instead, eat
healthier and do more physical exercise.
And last, but definitely not least, for any
persistent problem regarding any type of
sexual dysfunction you should see your
physician. There might be more serious
underlying health issues that you are not
even aware of and treating them could
solve the other problems too.
The truth is, ageing can be a challenge
both on the physical and the emotional
level for either men and women. But,
to follow the advice Dr. Susan Nolen-
Hoeksema, a noted Yale professor of
psychology, gave in Psychology Today:
“Old age is not just about surviving, it's
about flourishing”. Solutions do exist, if
you are only willing to look for them.
MALAYSIAN MEN’S PERCEPTION
AND ATTITUDES TOWARDS
SEX, THEIR SEX LIFE AND THEIR
OVERALL CONFIDENCE
A Study by Pfizer Malaysia
A study conducted by Pfizer Malaysia highlighted local
data on Malaysian men’s perception and attitudes
towards sex, their sex life and their overall confidence.
It was found that 53% of Malaysian men believe that a
healthy sex life contributes to a healthy marriage, but this
begets the question: what contributes to a healthy sex
life? In a fast paced world with numerous responsibilities
and expectations, the priorities of human relationships are
often challenged.
The study also revealed that being tired and busy due to
work and family commitments are often the main reasons
for men’s dissatisfaction with their sex life. It is found that
57% of Malaysian men are unsatisfied because they are
tired of busy 1 . 53% state that they are dissatisfied because
of their wife/partner is busy while 50% of men find it
difficult to find a suitable occasion for sex 2 .
With these pressures the study discovered that Malaysian
men feel the pressure of being a ‘real man’. 40% of
Malaysian men believe that a ‘real man’ is always able to
please his wife sexually and they believe that it is their duty
to keep their partner satisfied sexually in a relationship 3 .
43% of Malaysian men also have disclosed that satisfying
their partner during sex is more important than their own
satisfaction. The pressures affecting their confidence
have also led to concerns about their performance in the
bedroom. It is discovered that Malaysian men’s confidence
to get and keep an erection reduces after the age of 40 4 .
Men often have difficulties communicating these
challenges and fears to their spouses and even their
doctors! 71% of men believe that ED would not be
recognised as a medical problem, while 68% of men fear
that discussing sexuality may embarrass their doctors 5 . Did
you know that 44% of men that consulted a urologist have
ED but fail to mention it? 6
Counterfeit medication
The reluctance to seek
official channels are
driving Malaysian
Men to become
victims of unscrupulous
traders and websites
who prey on those
who are desperate to
seek treatment. 52%
of men are getting
their information from
healthcare websites
and 41% trust word
of mouth and recommendation from family and friends 7 .
Men are often prone to buying counterfeits as they
attempt to bypass HCP interactions. This is due to a desire
to obtain without embarrassment and perceptions that it is
cheapest from an uncontrolled source and have the ability
to obtain larger quantities.
Managing Sexual
Concerns When
You Have BPH
BPH otherwise known as Benign Prostate Hyperplasia refers to
changes that occur to the prostate as part of the ageing process
in men. There are two changes that occur:
• Prostate becomes more sensitive to the male hormone
testosterone which is converted into its more active form within
the prostate and this causes the prostate volume to increase.
• Prostate also consist of smooth muscles and increased
activity with this muscle causes the prostate to become
more stiff, therefore choking the urinary passage
80 percent of men over the age of 50 years will have BPH but
only 50 percent of them will suffer from symptoms. Therefore not all
patients with enlarged prostate gland will have symptoms of BPH.
Symptoms
The symptoms are collectively known as Lower Urinary Tract
Symptoms (LUTS) and is usually recognised as incomplete
emptying of bladder, poor urinary stream, hesitancy or difficulty
in initiating urination, dribbling, interrupted urinary stream, getting
up frequently at night to pass urine, going very often to urinate
in the day (frequency > 10 times) or urgency or difficulty in
postponing urination.
If these symptoms are allowed to progress, BPH can cause
complications such as formation of bladder stones, swelling of
kidney which may lead to kidney failure, sudden inability to
pass urine (acute retention) which will require doctor to insert
a urinary catheter, frequent urinary infection, incontinence and
blood in the urine.
BPH will not progress to cancer, however prostate cancer may
present with symptoms similar to BPH. Therefore the doctor will
examine the patient and this will involve doing a digital rectal
examination. The doctor will also do several other investigations
including a urine examination to exclude other causes of the
patient’s symptoms. It is therefore important that patients with
symptoms of LUTS seek further advice from their doctors.
It is observed that sexual dysfunction is often associated with BPH,
however there are also other causes of sexual dysfunction which
may be related to older age: diabetes, elevated cholesterol,
hypertension and drugs that the patient may be taking. Therefore
the patient should not be shy of discussing sexual dysfunction with
his doctor to enable the doctor to find out the root cause of his
problem. Sexual dysfunction can be treated.
Medication
The treatment of BPH with symptoms is usually by medication
and is quite effective. The medication has to be taken life long.
There are also herbal products such as Saw Palmetto but its
efficacy has not been clinically proven.
If medication fails to provide benefit or if the patient presents
with the complications of BPH as listed above, surgical
treatment will be recommended. This involves a procedure
called Transurethral Resection of Prostate (TURP). During this
procedure, the internal swelling of the prostate gland known
as adenoma is removed using either electrical current or laser.
This procedure is done endoscopically and usually does not
involve any incision. Therefore the patient may be discharged
anytime between 1-3 days and can resume light duty/work
within a week.
It is important that men with symptoms from BPH seek advice
from their doctor for the following reasons:
• To exclude prostate cancer and other causes apart from
BPH, for their symptoms.
• To identify patients who may have progression of BPH
as they get older and to treat these patients to prevent
complications in future.
• To identify complications from BPH which may have already
occurred and can be life threatening such as kidney failure.
• To address associated problems such as sexual dysfunction
and incontinence that would be affecting the patient’s
quality of life.
is our integrative approach can work in conjunction with your
existing treatment. If you still have concerns over your heart, we
run through a few non-invasive, state-of-the-art modalities to rule
out your worries:
• Esteck Screening
The Esteck screening, a FDA registered devise for your
heart screening measures the Cardio Metabolic score
which determines your risk to heart attack, stroke, diabetes,
cholesterol, blood thickness and many more and gives you
a 360 degree overall picture of your heart. Esteck adopts
a powerful statistical software that assess the functionality of
autonomic nervous system (ANS) which controls a number of
vital functions in the body like heart rate and blood pressure
and more.
• Ozone Therapy
With its effects on the circulation, ozone therapy is the most
effective therapy found for your heart disease due to blocked
arteries. Ozone therapy improves oxygen delivery and
circulation by:
––
Decreasing the viscosity and thickness of the blood, so
that it can navigate the small capillaries better, and is
easier to pump.
––
Improves the ability of red blood cells to unload oxygen to
the tissues. This persists long after the course of treatments
is completed.
––
Decreases inappropriate inflammation in the blood,
allowing for the formation of nitric oxide to help the arteries
dilate, further improving blood flow.
• Chelation
Scientists have recently found out that heavy metal toxicity
is associated with chronic diseases such as Cancer, Heart
Diseases, Degenerative diseases etc. Under such cases,
the organs of the body show high content of toxic metals
like Aluminium, Antimony, Nickle, Cadmium, Mercury etc.
and increased trace elements such as copper, iron, zinc,
manganese, calcium etc. When in excess these metals can
trigger formation of free radicals in the body. Chelation is an
effective way to remove heavy-metal poisoning.
• External Counter Pulsation (ECP)
ECP is an alternative, safe and non-invasive treatment for heart
and blood circulation problems or heart diseases such as
angina or any other cardiac issues. It uses pressure to perform
a “natural bypass” to our hearts. The pressure is increased
or decreased according to the electrocardiogram as ECP
increases the blood flow into the coronary arteries which
serves to mechanically open-up semi-blocked arteries that
makes it a “natural bypass” which is clinically proven.
PREVENTION & Remedies
Lying in wait
Pneumococcus bacteria may remain
dormant or turn deadly when least expected
In conjunction with the commemoration of National Immunisation Week on April 23, 2016
by Ministry of Health (MOH) & World Meningitis Day celebration on April 24, 2016
Streptococcus pneumoniae or
pneumococcus is a highly contagious
and potentially deadly bacterium that is
responsible for up to one million deaths
annually, among children under the age
of five years.
About 40-90% of children are
pneumococcal carriers, with the
bacteria commonly found colonising
the nasal passages. Pneumococcus is
transmitted easily through direct contact
with respiratory secretions, including the
mucous and saliva of infected individuals.
S. pneumoniae can attack various parts
of the body, causing pneumococcal
diseases of varying severity. These
diseases range from less severe yet
debilitating illnesses such asotitis
media (inflammation of the middle
ear) to severe and deadlyinvasive
pneumococcal diseases such as
pneumonia (lung infection) with
septicaemia (blood stream infection),
and meningitis (infection of the
protective layer of the brain and spine).
Children under-five attending nurseries
or kindergartens are two to three
times more likely to develop invasive
pneumococcal diseases and acute otitis
media. Children in this age group are
more susceptible partly because their
immune systems have yet to mature.
Furthermore, they are exposed to more
carriers at nurseries or kindergartens.
The good news is that there are ways to
protect your child against pneumococcal
disease and this includes practising
proper hygiene and vaccination.
However, some parents still refuse to take
preventive measures such as vaccinating
their children. Some prefer to leave
things to chance and fail to realise that
the bacteria is like a ticking bomb.
Pneumococcus may stay idle for months
or years, but once it causes severe
infection, it can be difficult to treat,
causes hospitalisation and may have
long-term negative health-implications or
even lead to death.
PREVENTION & Remedies
Case #1: Literally taking
your child’s breath away
According to Datuk Dr Zulkifli Ismail,
“A child suffering from pneumonia often
experiences high fever, cough and
difficulty in breathing that will lead to
prolonged hospitalisation, frequently
in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and
sometimes even surgery and death.” The
consultant paediatrician and paediatric
cardiologist also points out that treatment
of pneumococcal infection can be tricky
because it may not even be recognised
or diagnosed, and resistance to
antibiotics is increasing.
For example, a two-year old girl, Lucy*
was admitted to hospital after seven
days of prolonged coughing and fever.
The fever reached as high as 40°C
despite her mother dutifully administering
the prescribed antibiotics at home.
Upon admission to hospital, Lucy*
was diagnosed with pneumococcal
pneumonia and, much to everyone’s
dismay, her x-ray results showed that
her right lung has collapsed and filled
with fluid, making it extremely difficult
for Lucy* to breathe. She had to have
a tube inserted in her right chest to
drain about 250 ml of fluid, and was
then placed under close observation
for two days at the High Dependency
Unit (HDU) where stronger intravenous
antibiotics were administered.
Thankfully, after 10 days of treatment
at the hospital, Lucy* recovered with
some transient psychological trauma of
hospitalisation and with only a scar on
her chest. Later, Dr Zulkifli discovered
that Lucy* had not been vaccinated
against pneumococcal infection. Lucy’s*
mother said that, if given the choice, she
would have vaccinated her child if only
to spare Lucy* the agony of having to
fight against pneumonia and not have to
watch her daughter fight for her life.
Case #2: Fever should not
be taken lightly
According to Dato’ Dr Musa Mohd
Nordin, consultant paediatrician &
neonatologist, high fever arising from
pneumococcal infection may well be
one of the first signs that the bacteria has
spread to the brain. This disease, called
meningitis, is often fatal especially in
children under five years.
Dr Musa elaborates by citing a case in
which a five-month-old baby girl, Adlin*,
had pneumococcal meningitis within four
days after the onset of high fever. Adlin*
was brought to the hospital two days
after her fever failed to subside despite
being given medication from a clinic.
Upon admission, Adlin was irritable,
feeding poorly and vomiting. She was
immediately placed in the Intensive Care
Unit (ICU), given ventilation, intravenous
antibiotics and closely monitored.
Unfortunately, Adlin’s* cerebrospinal fluid
test confirmed spread of pneumococcus
infection to her brain and spinal cord.
Despite the medical team’s best efforts,
she died within 10 hours of admission.
“It is really heart-breaking to watch
parents grieve the loss of a child,” said
Dr Musa. “As medical doctors we know
that pneumococcal meningitis is not easy
to treat. That is why we would rather
encourage parents to take all preventive
measures, including vaccinating their
children against the disease,” he added.
Case #3: Ear infections
may affect language
development
When treating children with speech
and learning difficulties, one of
the things Dr Yong Junina Fadzil,
consultant paediatrician and paediatric
cardiologist, will try to establish is if
the child has ever suffered from otitis
media. Chronic otitis media is the
leading cause of hearing loss among
children and it can be the result of
pneumococcal infection.
Infection reduces hearing ability because
the pus developed in the middle ear
prevents the eardrum and middle ear
bones from moving as freely as they
should. In a worst case scenario, too
much pus can put pressure on the
eardrum and eventually cause perforation
in the eardrum. Hearing loss from otitis
media may range from mild to moderate,
to severe to profound. If this hearing loss
occurs at the time when it is crucial for
speech and language development, the
child will most likely end up with speech
and language disabilities.
Often, such speech impairments also
lead to learning difficulties and poor
academic performance. Such problems
were experienced by Zikri*, who was
susceptible to repeated ear infections
from birth. Zikri* had speech delay and
was unable to speak properly even by
the time he enrolled in his first year of
primary school. For his first assessment at
school, he did so poorly that the teacher
decided to place him in a special-needs
class. His mother, not realising that his
speech delay may have been caused by
his ear infection problems, did not consult
with ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist
until the following year, when Zikri*
had an episode of severe and painful
ear infection. Upon treatment, Zikri’s*
hearing improved, as did his grades.
PREVENTION & Remedies
7 Things
NOT Helpful
To Say
How to
Recognise Them
& Destroy Them
What do you say to someone who’s
depressed? All too often, it’s the wrong
thing. Depression is a severe medical
condition that affects the way we think,
feel, and act. Despite with good intention,
we sometimes say things that are unhelpful
or may worsen a person's depression.
Here are some suggestions for responding
wisely with empathy in response to
someone who is battling depression.
1. Don’t be lazy, you’re
wasting your time!
Why not? Excessive tiredness is a
common symptom of depression. "Lazy"
implies that the person is having an
attitude problem or making it up.
Mindful response: It must be very
frustrating feeling tired all the time and
unable to do the things you wanted to do...
2. It’s your bad karma (sin) -
do more good!
Why not? This may induce or worsen
guilt feeling which is part of depression.
It may also trigger thoughts of uselessness
which to the person, may come off as
"I'm not good enough."
Mindful response: Bad things sometimes
do happen in life and nobody really
knows why. Let’s see how we can move
on together…
3. Nothing is impossible;
think positive and stay
strong.
Why not? Having depression is not a
sign of weakness. Many great people in
the world had depression.
Mindful response: Do you need a
hug? It must be really tough going
through all the difficulties. Maybe you’ve
been too strong for too long…
4. How long more do you
want to be depressed?!
Why not? Being depressed is not a
choice. We don't tell a person with
cancer, "How long more do you want to
struggle with cancer?"
Mindful response: Wow! You’ve been
struggling for so long. I wonder how you
manage to cope all these while…
5. Begrateful. Stop feeling
sorry for yourself; many are
worse off than you.
Why not? This may be invalidating or
disrespecting the emotional pain of a
depressed person. They may also think,
"Ya, I'm so useless/ungrateful. People
can cope and move on, but I can't.
Terrible me!"
Mindful response: It’s unfortunate that so
many bad things had happened to you.
Let’s see how we can work on them…
6. Why are you so weak?
You think you’re the only
one with problems?!
Why not? Obviously, he/she is not
coping well, despite others may be
having the same problems and are able
to cope. Else, he/she won't be suffering
from depression.
Mindful response: Ya, life sometimes
can be terrible. I’m going through some
challenges too…
7. Stop pretending to be
depressed!
Why not? Nobody chooses or pretends
to have cancer. Similarly, depression, as
a medical condition, is NOT a choice.
Mindful response: Perhaps you don’t
have to try so hard pretending to be
happy. Sometimes, it’s OK not to be ok…
In brief, try to be a good listener,
understanding, empathetic and
supportive (e.g. offer tissue paper if
someone is crying, give a gentle pat on
the shoulder, offer a hug).
someone who has depression? Well, it
could even be you!”
depression to seek help."
PREVENTION & Remedies
HEAD LICE…
EWWW!
42 Natural Health * June 2016 VOL 69
PREVENTION & Remedies
What are head lice?
Head lice are tiny bugs that reside
in human hair. They are particularly
common in children. Head lice are
whitish to grey-brown in colour, and
smaller than the size of a pinhead when
first hatched. When fully grown they are
about the size of a sesame seed. They
can't fly, jump or swim and are spread
via head-to-head contact, climbing from
the hair of an infected person to the hair
of someone else.
A head lice infestation isn't the outcomes
of dirty hair or poor hygiene. All types
of hair can also be affected, regardless
its length and condition. Head lice only
affect people and cannot be passed on
to animals or be caught from them.
Where do head lice
come from?
Head lice are human parasites and don't
come from the air or ground. In fact,
head lice have probably been here the
beginning of time. Head lice and nits that
have dried up were found on the hair
and scalps of Egyptian mummies.
How to recognise them
You might recognise whether you have
head lice. Head lice are grayish brown
insects that live on your scalp and feed
on blood. Seek medical help for an
examination for those who consider
itchiness very most likely and may also
see little bugs come out of your hair as
you itch. Using of a magnifying glass
makes identification of head lice easier.
Dandruff and dirt can sometimes be
mistaken for head lice. Head lice can
also be difficult to see, even when the
head is closely inspected.
Unhitched eggs or nits (empty eggshells)
alone are not enough to diagnose
an active head lice infestation. This is
because it can be difficult to differentiate
between eggs and nits that are dead or
alive. Nits also usually remain glued to
hairs long after successful treatment. To
confirm an active head lice infestation,
a louse ought to be determined by
a reliable, accurate method, such as
detection combing. Detection combing
is the best method of finding head lice. It
involves utilising a special first-class-toothed
head lice comb with a tooth spacing of
0.2-zero.3mm to brush the hair.
Are head lice dangerous?
Head lice are not dangerous. They
don't spread disease. However, they
are contagious so, they can spread from
individual to individual easily. They are also
annoying: louse bites can itch. If someone
scratches a lot, it is going to lead to skin
irritation and even infection. A head louse
can live up to 4 weeks on a person's head
and lay 10 eggs a day. Since that louse
can multiply fast, it's a good thought to
deal with head lice quickly.
What are the symptoms?
You may not be aware of a lice
infestation. However, common signs and
symptoms can comprise:
Itching. Itching on the scalp, neck and
ears is the most common symptom. This
is an allergic reaction to louse saliva.
When an individual has an infestation for
the first time, itching may not arise for 2
to 6 weeks after infestation.
• Lice on a scalp. Lice could also be
seen visible but very difficult to spot
because they're small, avoid light and
move quickly.
Natural Health * June 2016 VOL 69
43
PREVENTION & Remedies
• Lice eggs (nits) on hair shafts. Nits
follow hair shafts. Incubating nits
could also be complicated to see
considering they're very tiny and
camouflaged to hair colour. They are
easiest to identify around the ears
and the hairline of the neck. Empty
nits are also easier to spot due to the
fact they may be lighter in colour and
further from the scalp. Nevertheless,
the presence of nits doesn't always
indicate an active infestation.
Children
at school and
in childcare settings
are going to play,
and their play may
lead to the spread
of head lice.
What are the causes?
Head lice are contagious. You can
become infected with head lice when the
bugs crawl onto your head.
Ways you might get head
lice include:
• Touching your head to an infected
person’s head
• Sharing the private objects (e.g.,
comb) of someone with head lice
• Making use of a material item after an
infected person
• Lice can also be transferred
through brushes, combs, barrettes,
headbands, headphones, and hats.
They can also live for a time on
upholstered furniture, bedding, towels,
or clothing.
What can I do to prevent it?
Stop sharing:
• Combs and brushes
• Hair clips and accessories
• Hats and bike helmets
• Scarves and coats
• Towels
• Headsets and ear buds
Do head lice carry or
transmit any disease?
While many have thought head lice to
be only a nuisance, recently scientific
shows that head lice are the same
species as body louse which has long
been associated with diseases such as
typhus and relapsing fever. Disorder
transmission from head louse must not
be underestimated.
How do head lice spread?
Head lice can pass from person to person
when they share personal items such
as combs, towels, clothing, hats, and
hairbrushes. Lice aren't spread with the
aid of dogs, cats, or different pets. Due to
the fact lice can't jump or fly, they crawl
from one person to another, making use of
their claws to seize onto hair.
How to treat them?
Head lice can mainly be effectively
treated with lotions or sprays designed
to kill head lice, or using wet combing,
using a notably designed head lice
comb. Wet combing can be utilised
without lotions or sprays, but it needs
to be done regularly and may take a
very long time to do thoroughly. Lotions
or sprays can be used alternatively.
However, to be totally effective they must
be applied correctly and thoroughly.
How long do I have to worry
about re-infestation?
It's difficult to prevent a head lice
infestation because head lice are
spread via head-to-head contact.
Regular detection combing – for
example, on a weekly basis – is the
best option to find new lice quickly.
Lotions and sprays don't prevent head
lice infestations and should only be
used if a live louse has been found on
you, or on your child's head.
Children at school and in childcare
settings are going to play, and their play
may lead to the spread of head lice.
However, you can take steps to hinder
the spread of lice amongst children
and adults. To reduce the chance of
you or your child contracting head lice,
begin by not sharing items that touch
the head. Though it may be tempting to
share personal belongings especially
for children, doing so can lead to the
spread of head lice.
PUASA WITH CHIA SEEDS
Rich in Omega-3, protein, fibre and
antioxidants, Organic Chia Seed is a
Ramadan superfood
When done right, fasting doesn’t just offer spiritual rewards,
but a range of health benefits too. These include better weight
management, revved-up metabolism, lowered blood lipids
and blood pressure, and improved blood sugar control.
To fully reap these benefits, you need to consume enough
nutritious foods and H2O during non-fasting hours, and of
course, practise self-control and self-discipline! When planning
your sahur and buka puasa meals, think complex carbs,
lean protein, high-fibre grains, veggies and fruits, low-fat
dairy and healthy fats. Here’s what you want: the slow and
steady release of energy, and ensuring your body gets all the
vitamins and minerals it needs.
An ancient staple of the Mayans (chia is the Mayan word
for ‘strength’) and Aztecs, chia seeds contain heart-healthy
Omega-3, protein, fibre, antioxidants and essential nutrients
such as calcium, magnesium and vitamin B3. It isn’t called a
superfood for nothing!
With its nine essential amino acids, chia seeds are considered
the ‘complete’ protein. Combine that with its high fibre content
(10g per two tablespoons), chia seeds give you long-lasting
energy throughout your fast, making it ideal for sahur. Just add a
tablespoon to your food or drink, and you’re good to go.
Protein also helps regulate your appetite, sleep and mood; handy
in Ramadan as your body adapts to diet and lifestyle changes.
Spoon Health Organic Chia Seed is available in three sizes,
150g (RM21.09), 450g (RM52.89) and 900g (RM95.29),
COVER Story
Tell us a little bit about yourself
Pre-cancer, I am an ambitious person, and some would call
me an over-achiever ever since I was young. My lifelong
dream was to help youths socially and emotionally, especially
the abused and abandoned ones since I was 16. As I was
volunteering at an orphanage during that time, I saw the effects
of abuse and abandonments on these children and set on a
path to study psychology, as I felt that would be the best way
to help these children knowing that I would have gained the
knowledge to do so. To gain the skills needed to help them, I
knew I had to study all the way through to the PhD level, and
hence I got a scholarship to study at the University of Hawaii
at Manoa from my bachelors all the way to my PhD. As I didn’t
want to take too long, I made sure I doubled my courses every
semester taking up to 25 credits per semester; graduating with
a degree at 20, and a masters at 22. All this time, I would say
that the stress was definitely there as I needed to achieve good
results too for the scholarship to continue.
After being diagnosed, the ambitious and over-achieving
part of me wasn’t important anymore; the fighting spirit in me
surfaced instead. Many things which I thought of as important
previously didn’t seem so anymore, and now I truly focus on
the important things in life such as family, friends, and taking
care of my health. The other surprising thing is that I finally
get to help youth directly now as I’ve just been appointed the
first youth ambassador for the National Cancer Society of
Malaysia (NCSM). My dream is finally being realised but in an
unexpected way.
How would you sum yourself up in
three words?
I would say bubbly, spirited, and compassionate.
Then I came back to Malaysia at the age of 25 because
I was disillusioned with the academic world, realising that
whatever I did wasn't for the youth, but rather for the academic
community. I set upon a path of entertainment as I wanted to
create a talk show to reach out to all Malaysians speaking
about youth psychological issues that they don’t know about.
I chose entertainment because I knew the power of media,
and how it can reach far and wide in a short time. The year
I was diagnosed, 2014, was the year I had defended my
dissertation, completed hosting a reality show with Lowyat.net,
and was hosting an average of two events a week.
You were wearing many hats; host, emcee,
actor, model, voice-over talent when your
world came tumbling down. Tell us what led
you to find out you had Colon Cancer?
I started feeling tired by the afternoon on a daily basis, but
that didn’t register any concerns to my family and I as we
thought I lacked exercise. Then the diarrhoea came once a
month which I attributed to a sensitive stomach after coming
back to Malaysia. Plus, I started losing weight three months
before diagnosis. None of these were a cause of concern not
just for me but for anyone as they seemed normal. Then one
day, I started having diarrhoea due to bad milk from a ‘teh
tarik’, and that lasted for three weeks. My dad insisted I see
a gastroenterologist, and when I met him, he was reluctant to
perform a colonoscopy for me as I was young and it was an
evasive procedure.
However, my dad insisted because he thought it was H. pylori,
and because of that we found a tumour in my rectum.
COVER Story
Sharing my
story has helped
many people,
especially young
cancer patients
in Asia to seek
medical help
Is it true that within the eight days between
the diagnosis and the first surgery, you
hosted two major events and your clients
didn't know about your illness?
Yes, that’s true. I found out I had a tumour on a Friday,
and while waiting for the biopsy results, I hosted a full day
conference on a Tuesday the following week. When I came
back from work that day, my mom sat me down and told me
that the results confirmed it was cancer. Of course, it was a
shock and I cried, but after that, I felt a calm I have never felt
before, and I knew that I am having this for a reason. The next
few days were CT scans, blood tests, visits to doctors, and the
Friday of that week, I hosted another huge event, ACA 16.
All through these two events, no one knew what I was going
through because I felt that it was a responsibility of mine that I
have committed to host these two huge events, and I want to
do a good job for them as both these events had international
delegates, and I would never want to let my clients down.
Not many diagnosed with Cancer are willing
to come out into the open. What's the need
for you to tell your story to the world?
I didn’t at first… but, after quite a lot of encouragement from
friends in particular; they pushed me to write, and I did as they
said I had a compelling story to share. When I wrote my first
post, it was from the heart, without any expectations, and that
post became viral reaching to the United States even. Sharing
my story has helped many people, especially young cancer
patients in Asia to seek medical help. An example would be
how an Indonesian girl’s sister contacted me (she didn’t want to
seek treatment after being diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer
at 23), I reached out to the patient, and now she’s on the way
to recovery after completing her second cycle of chemotherapy.
If it wasn’t for my post, I wouldn’t be contacted, and I wouldn’t
know what would have happened to her. That’s just one of the
stories, there are many more.
You are a strong advocate of medical
insurance due to your bad experience
funding your surgery. Can you tell us more
about it?
Yes. I only found out after calling the supervisor of my agent
that my policy had lapsed even after I paid and that my
agent did not remit the money to the company for me. The
challenges were monumental after being diagnosed with
cancer, and finding out the costs. But with the help of the
agent’s supervisor, and my family, we managed to get the
policy reinstated and received the money six months into
recovery, after we have paid first.
I cannot stress how important insurance is, because the costs
of medical bills are exorbitant, and I wouldn’t have been able
to pay first if not for my mom, and our family members who
chipped in. If my policy was actually fine, I wouldn’t have to
pay a single cent, or worry from the beginning. The financial
burden was heavy for my parents, and I truly felt bad as it
should be the other way around instead of my parents having
to pay for me. Plus, if you are afflicted with cancer, money
should be the least of your worries, but it was at the forefront
of mine.
COVER Story
How much has life changed before
after Cancer?
My life has completely changed in direction and goals. Now,
my aim is to raise cancer awareness in Malaysia as the Youth
Ambasaador of NCSM. We are starting our first youth cancer
support group meeting end of May, and I have been shooting a
series highlighting amazing stories of cancer patients, survivors
and caretakers which will be able to help many people feel
stronger. In terms of goals, I don’t have any long term goals
anymore as I will never know what will happen tomorrow, I live
each day as it comes, appreciating every moment. I rest more,
and do what I like more often.
What drives you now?
The support from my family members, and friends, and also the
supporters from all over the world giving me courage on a daily
basis to continue doing the work I am doing, as I’ve received
many messages telling me that I am inspiring, motivating, and
that they have been touched by cancer one way or the other,
and my story motivates them to continue on.
Tell us about the #ShareStrength project that
you started
I basically started the project August last year, as I wanted
to give back to the community for supporting me. I felt alone
when I was wearing the colostomy bag as I had no one my
age to talk to about how to handle it. Everyone that my friends
or family knew were in their 70’s and I felt that it was difficult
as they were in a different stage in their lives. Hence, I started
the #sharestrength project to encourage people to share their
stories, to empower not only themselves but others to be strong,
to share, and get better. This would allow others to not feel
alone too, like how I did.
What other projects are in the pipeline?
As mentioned, I will be the youth ambassador for NCSM which
means I will be helping raise cancer awareness in Malaysia
to the youth through talks around Malaysia, and international
conferences. I am currently shooting “An Awakening,” a series
about cancer from all aspects. Every share of the video will
channel RM1 to NCSM for their cancer information system. I
am busy with that for now, but I continue to write on my blog to
share stories of inspiring cancer patients, or people, and about
health in general. Besides that, I am still hosting events, but am
now more focused on health events as well.
You were finalising your studies in
Developmental Psychology when tragedy
struck. Have you completed it now?
Unfortunately no, as my professor is a perfectionist. I am
completing it soon though, so wish me luck?
Any advice for our readers?
In any adversity, know that you have the strength to battle it,
because there are many people out there who love and care
for you. Always remember that, and live each day as it comes,
and don’t fret the small things in life.
WORK HARD, PLAY HARD.
ENJOY BOTH!
How do women in high post, high-stress, demanding leadership positions often find work-life balance and
achieve challenging goals? While the excitement of being in charge can be a great motivator to succeed,
the responsibilities of leading a business on top of the responsibilities in your personal life can easily wear
you down. How do they separate work and play, or even combine them in their lives? In this new series, we
speak to women in top career posts to offer insights and advice and inspire you to enjoy both worlds.
it with “Love and Gratitude”. Love for compassion, Love for
sharing, Love for fairness, and Love for teaching. Gratitude for the
opportunities, Gratitude for the loyal staff members who serve the
company and Gratitude for those who have helped us.
What do you think is the biggest
barrier for women in the job field
today?
When women get married and have children, they leave their
job to look after the kids. So, how can corporations invest in
women versus men for management development? Working
is a continuous process of learning and upgrading oneself,
how much time does a woman invest in learning versus in
retail therapy? Woman need to hone their skills, read the
business news, know what is happening globally as all these
global economic changes affect business. Woman need to
be relevant to the changing times and needs. They need to
be aware and to be alert so they can make recommendations
that are relevant today.
What are the best and hardest things
about being a women in a top position?
Best thing is you are recognised for your abilities. Recognition
is essential for one’s well being. Hardest? There is none so long
as you are natural, you are knowledgeable, you are on top of
things, you are able to perform, and you lace it with charm and
feminity. We will get more respect than barrier.
Please describe yourself in one word
PASSIONATE. Passionate to work. Passionate to whatever
I believe in and in attaining the goals I set no matter how.
Passionate in my beliefs and ‘Never Giving Up’ until my beliefs
are realised. Passionate to family. Family harmony is vital to
a happy family. My goal is to ensure there is harmony as my
two sons are married and I have to ensure my daughter-in-laws
are happy too by not interfering in their lives but showing them
I care and love them by bonding with the grandchildren and
taking care of the family without impositions or conditions.
What do you think has been a key
factor in your success?
A strong belief in myself that I will succeed so long I backed
52 Natural Health * June 2016 VOL 69
Personality
It is only when you approach with aggressiveness, pride,
self prejudiced and ‘needing to prove yourself’ that you face
barriers. Mostly, in today’s world men are more open so long
we do not challenge them unreasonably; barriers can be
broken down and you harness respect instead.
Hardest thing when you are at the top is to balance between
home and work. You always have to ensure you are on top of
things so there is harmony. You need dedicated people around
you so you can trust them to assist you attain this balance (be it
the maid, your secretary, your managers and staff).
What’s your view on "women can
have it all?"
I believe a woman can have it all provided ‘they can give it all
before having it all.’
How do you blend your work and life
to achieve the life you desire?
You have to work in many compartments so that you are able to
solve each issue or problem but compartmentalise it. You should
not push your problems or your family but you can communicate
with them to attain their understanding. With understanding
comes support and acceptance. As you grow in your career,
you too need to upgrade your family lifestyle with better
education for your children, talking with them and the bonding
will assist you tremendously to attain the life you desire. You
must always be sure-footed and be down to earth and be real
and be true to yourself and your family.
What do you do to unwind during
your free time?
I play with the kids, laugh with them, cook for them. Take a
run on the grass barefooted to release the electric charges in
our body, to grow organic vegetables in our garden with the
children so they can see it grow. Harvest the vegetables and
take delight in eating it as it is so fresh and sweet. I also read
romantic novels and watch dramas.
How do you manage stress?
When you are stressed, relax, sleep well, watch a movie or do
some cooking for the family. The best is to sleep well for 8 to
10 hours and you wake up fresh. If you have lived the values
stated above, you will face limited stress from work or family.
If stress is from world economy changes, then you need to
review your strategies, you need to reconsolidate your position
and look for alternative solutions and action plans that can
help the business. If you are in business all these problems are
bound to happen, so your mindset has to be ready to accept
and meet the challenges. I will not look at it as stress but as
challenges that can be converted to business opportunities.
What’s the best advice you ever
received?
The best advice I received is from the books I read which
influenced me a lot in my living. The books are: The Five
Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die by John Izzo and
Hidden Messages of Water by Masaru Emoto.
What's your advice for women out
there?
Be Yourself, Believe in Yourself. You must take the trouble to
look after yourself, stay beautiful but do not be vain. Always be
positive and become LOVE itelf.
Marketing Manager
Blackmores Malaysia
Married with two
energetic daughters
Looking across the job field today,
what do you think is the biggest barrier
for women?
The biggest barrier for women is the lack of confidence to take
on the leadership role and not taking enough responsibility
in advocating their own success. This fear could be due to
the perception that they will lose the work life balance if they
choose to pursue career advancement. I believe that when
opportunity knocks, grab it and make the best of it. The key to
having the best of both worlds is to set goals that really matter,
and work on them first and forget about the rest because they
will work themselves out. For example, when you plan to be
with your children, nothing else supersedes their needs.
What has been the best and hardest
thing about being a women in a
top position?
The hardest thing is the guilt that you feel whenever you don’t
spend enough time with your loved ones. It is therefore my
goal to try to achieve my personal goals while trying to involve
friends and family. In this way, I am not multi-tasking, rather
achieving more by doing less.
What’s your view on “women can
have it all”?
Yes, women can have it all if we maintain balance in all the
aspects of life.
Describe yourself in one word
PERCEPTIVE: The easiest way I would define perceptiveness is
in my ability to sense and understand everything that happens
around me, filter them and act upon them objectively to create
valuable and meaningful outcomes. As a mother and a career
woman, there are so many different circumstances coming
towards me at every moment of the day and I realised that
I have to stay calm so that I can continuously care about my
personal needs, as well as the needs of my family and the
needs of everyone around me.
What do you think has been a key
factor in your success?
In my early years, I have been inspired by my parents. The
discipline and tenaciousness they have taught me helped drive
the passion for me to succeed. And as a young adult, I have
been guided by many good mentors in my career path. My
moral compass has never wavered and coupled with firm selfdiscipline
and perseverance inculcated in my formative years, I
saw that I could adapt myself to any situation. Wherever I am, I
was prepared.
My husband and I share many similar ideals. We hold deep
respect for each other, and we give each other healthy doses of
unconditional love and personal space. We both love to spoil
our children but maintain a firm yet caring family atmosphere.
54 Natural Health * June 2016 VOL 69
Personality
How do you blend your work and life
to achieve the life you desire?
Work life balance has different meaning to different people.
Some think it’s the flexibility of time or having more time with the
family. For me, a positive meaning to work life balance has to
do with achievement and fulfilment. As a nutritionist, if my work
can bless one more person with a healthy body and my words
can bless another with a happy heart, then I have achieved the
life I have desired.
What’s the best piece of advice you
ever received?
Health is wealth. You can’t achieve anything without physical
and emotional wealth. Surround yourself with good friends, be
close to your family members and pursue a clear spiritual path.
After all, health is not limited to physical health but also social,
mental and spiritual health.
What's your best piece of advice for
women out there?
If you are a working mom, don’t feel guilty of not spending
enough time with your children. Let every moment be a treasured
one. This will be difficult especially when we are tired. Find
ways to be energetic with good nutrition and healthy living
habits. Just being there for your children is good enough.
Remember, it’s about quality time and don’t count on the number
of hours.
If you are a career woman, pursue a leadership position without
sacrificing your personal moral values, ethics and health.
To all women, the grass is always greener on the other side.
While all of us are facing daily challenges unique to our
lifestyle choices (marital choices, career choices etc.), our
strength lies in being comfortable in our own skin, facing the
shortfalls that come with each choice and loving ourselves
totally and unconditionally.
Where would you like to see yourself
five years from now?
Live in the present. Fall in love again with your present self.
Nobody can predict what will happen tomorrow. So if we live
with kindness, love and happiness right now, the future will
shape itself to be everything we have ever wanted.
What do you do to unwind during
your free time?
To unwind, I watch Korean Dramas. And in the weekends, I
learn and refine my Penang Nyonya recipes.
How do you manage stress?
By finding a quiet spot, sitting down, closing my eyes for 10
minutes, and breathing in and out slowly helps with managing
my stress. By controlling my sugar, salt, oil and carbohydrate
intake, I free my body from physical stress.
Renoderm
Hydrocolloid
Dressing
For Fast, Effective
Wound Healing
Hydrocolloids are among the most widely used modern
dressings but that does not necessarily mean that they
are widely understood. A hydrocolloid dressing is a
wafer type of dressing that contains gel forming agents
in an adhesive compound laminated onto a flexible,
water resistant outer layer.
In the presence of wound exudate, hydrocolloids absorb liquid and
form a gel, the properties of which are determined by the nature of the
formulation. Hydrocolloids are easy to use, require changing only after
several days of use and do not cause trauma on removal. This makes
them useful for clean, granulating, superficial wounds, with low to
medium exudate.
Hydrocolloids provide effective occlusion, hence they provide:
• a moist healing environment
• autolytic debridement
• insulation
Renoderm Structural Properties
Protective film layer made of waterproof polyurethane film
Adhesive layer (Hydrocolloid layer)
Material: Colloid layer with natural hydrophilic polymer
(CMC) is dispersed in a hydrophobic adhesive
polymer.
Renoderm Advantages
• Easy to apply
• Waterproof and self adhesive; does not peel off
easily when showering or swimming even when
it is attached on curved skin area
• It is easy to observe the affected area as it is
transparent
• Can be cut to fit size of wound
• Minimally disrupt healing. Dressing changes to
milky colour after absorbing an exudation, so you
know the replacement time
• Impermeable to bacteria and other contaminants
• Protects (including light scratches and wounds,
pimple, rashes and injuries due to extraction
of moles)
