Nowadays, Sandburg students get to call Burfeind coach, and James Caliendo said he could not be happier that he has Burfeind on his side. “She’s invaluable to our program,” Caliendo said. “First of all, she’s a technician, as far as teaching skills. She works with our young kids — our first-year swimmers — our more inexperienced kids that come out for the team.” Caliendo coined the term “Betty’s Bombers” for Burfeind’s freshman program. The boys varsity swimming team is to swim 1 million yards this season, and the workload can often scare off incoming freshman. “She teaches such great technique that they become hooked on swimming right away,” Caliendo said. “Her positive approach — the way that she works with the kids — she instills the love of the sport in the kids. “Without the right approach with the younger kids, you just scare them away, because it is a hard sport.” Burfeind uses her wealth of experience to motivate both past and present students. One technique she has used in seasons past is a chart. In years past, Burfeind found herself with roughly 20 freshman to teach, and she found it hard to keep them all motivated. The chart provided a visual example and encouraged them to beat the coach’s time. If the boys could match or best her U.S. Masters Swimming time or her National Senior Games Association time, they received a gold or blue star. Everyone’s name is up there, along with Burfeind’s records for the different strokes she swims. It was motivation that served her students well in the past. “We don’t cut freshman; that’s our policy, and Anthony Bonnar is the perfect reason why,” Burfeind said. “If the freshman doesn’t like it, they’ll cut themselves.” Bonnar is the go-to example of a student who benefitted from Burfeind’s unique coaching style. Bonnar could barely make length of the pool when he started as a freshman. It was through Burfeind’s constant encouragement and instruction of technique that gave Bonnar the foundation he needed. Four years later, Bonnar made it to the 2012 Illinois High School Association State Swimming & Diving competition. “I took him to the level where coach [Caliendo] could train him,” Burfeind said. “I gave him the basics. ... It was so exciting to see him get a medal in the state meet. “I wanted to cry for him. It just goes to show you that if you put your mind to it — and you work really hard at something — you can never be surprised at what you might accomplish.” Bonnar finished with a silver medal for the 200-yard freestyle relay. The evolution of swimming It’s with a wealth of knowledge and 62 years of experience that Burfeind has seen the evolution of the sport firsthand. “The [students] just keep getting faster,” Burfeind said. She attributes this fact to a multitude of factors. The knowledge and understanding of the science behind swimming have played a huge role in the students’ ability to get faster, she said. Training programs that include strength workouts, where good nutrition is a heavy focus, compounded with more practice time in the pool have created faster swimmers. “It’s amazing — the amount of research that’s gone into it, and how far we’ve come,” Burfeind said. Part of that research is the technology used not only in the suits swimmers wear but plays a role in the equipment used, as well. Starting blocks, the use of lane lines, and other components all are designed with physics in mind to decrease drag. Ultimately giving swimmers the best tools from the start. According to Burfeind, it is why swimmers have been able to consistently shave seconds off of their times. Milliseconds in swimming can mean the difference between first and second place, as well as being able to shave seconds off break records. Something even as simple as goggles were not always around for swimmers to use, and that was something Burfeind had to get used to in her own career, as well. “When you start to use goggles, they come off a lot,” Burfeind said. “You have to find a pair of goggles that fit your eye socket, you have to put them on your head right and your dive has to be perfect so you don’t lose those goggles. “It’s like driving a car, and not using your windshield wipers; that would be like swimming without goggles.” Burfeind did not use her first pair of goggles until she was 38 years old in 1985. Burfeind still tells her students to take their time and find the pair that fits them correctly. Throughout Burfeind’s life, she has truly seen the evolution of the sport. She’s continually surprised by how fast swimmers are, and every year they keep breaking records. She keeps expecting there to be a plateau in the times, but that’s something she’s still waiting for. “We haven’t seen it yet,” Burfeind said of what the future holds.
