History Museum’s first Homemade for the Holidays event a hit
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
As snow gently fell outside
of the Orland Park
History Museum Dec. 4,
residents gathered for some
early holiday cheer and giving.
The Orland Park History
Museum Foundation hosted
the Homemade for the Holidays
Wreath Silent Auction
& Holiday Open House at
the museum, 14415 Beacon
Ave., from 1-3 p.m., as dozens
turned out to show their
support and bid, despite the
snow and less-than-ideal
driving conditions.
Seventeen wreaths were
decorated and donated by
various Orland Park businesses
and organizations,
with the suggested starting
prices set at $40.
“When we looked around
online and saw some of the
wreaths that you can buy,
this is actually quite a steal,”
said Elizabeth Christofylakis,
chairperson of the museum
and development advisory
board. “All of them
are really gorgeous.”
Among the groups that
donated wreaths were Sandburg
High School’s Student
Council, as well as the high
school’s music program;
several businesses, such
as EyeLight Studios, Mari
Lou’s Fine Jewelry and the
antique shops in Orland,
Bettenhausen Jeep; and the
Orland Park Area Chamber
of Commerce.
“I created one on behalf
of the museum, and
[Trustee] Pat Gira was kind
enough to donate one, as
well,” Christofylakis said.
“We had a ton of participation.
And the great thing is
that we’ve already heard
from other businesses that
[asked] if we are doing this
next year. They want to get
in.”
The silent auction also
had the distinction of being
the first fundraiser the
foundation has had for the
museum.
“We thought this would
be a great way to not only
get people into the museum
but also to celebrate the holidays
and help the museum
out,” Christofylakis said.
And with the picturesque
scene outside, holiday cheer
was in abundance.
“I ordered the snow,” she
joked. “But really, you can’t
beat this setting. Old Orland
is such a beautiful part
of Orland Park. It’s nice to
be able to showcase [the
village’s] history in such a
beautiful location.”
Christofylakis’ personal
favorite was a wreath that
was adorned with elves.
“Elf on the Shelf is strong
in my house this year,” she
said. “I have two little boys
who will be quite happy
with that [wreath].”
Christofylakis said a lot of
the wreaths featured antique
ornaments, which can come
off of the wreaths once the
holiday season concludes.
“So all of the decorations
can come off and be repurposed
or reused,” she said.
Mayor Dan McLaughlin
was in attendance and said
the wreaths were all very
creative. He noted a lot of
businesses and organizations
stepped up to get involved
with the fundraiser.
“It’s a neat event, and
it’s the first time we’re doing
this,” he said. “I see
[the event] growing and being
maybe like the Orland
Spelling Bee, where it is a
community event. It may be
a little old-fashioned, but
it’s [things like this] that
people gravitate toward.”
McLaughlin said events
like this fundraiser help
keep that small-town feel
in Orland Park. It is one of
Eileen Neary (left) and Maribeth Nugent talk about a wreath Dec. 4 during the Orland Park History Museum Foundation’s
Homemade for the Holidays Wreath Silent Auction & Holiday Open House. Photos by Bob Klein/22nd Century Media
Sandburg High School’s Chamber Singers perform during
the event.
the many reasons why he
worked hard to try to open
the history museum.
“That’s why I’ve spent
the last four or five years
trying to create a museum,”
McLaughlin said. “Kids
growing up in Orland Park
don’t really know Orland
Park’s history. They are
Attendees (left to right) Marissa, Kayla and Tony Pelini play
with a dreidel and work on crafts during the Homemade for
the Holidays Wreath Silent Auction & Holiday Open House.
learning American and
[world] history, but they
really don’t anything about
Orland Park history.”
The event also featured
a children’s corner, where
younger attendees could build
their own wreath decorations.

This past week, publisher
We also threatened you
with more holiday songs
turned poor excuses for poetry
if we did not feel loved
enough by this week. And
while some of you have already
sent us plenty of holiday
cheer, we still felt like it
wasn’t quite enough.
That is why we are giving
you one more week to make
things right and appease the
editorial staff.
We also are announcing
Orland Park Village Board
Expenditures in 2017 to exceed revenues by nearly $8 million
Deficit to be covered
by 2016 surplus
funds
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
The Village of Orland
Park Board of Trustees voted
unanimously Dec. 5 to
approve the Village’s 2017
budget and 2016 property
tax levy.
The 2017 budget, which
starts Jan. 1, 2017, and ends
Dec. 31, 2017, calls for approximately
$139.5 million
in revenues and $147.4 million
in expenditures.
According to staff, the
difference between the
numbers will be covered by
surplus 2016 funds and the
Village’s capital reserves.
The Village’s proposed
2016 tax levy is in the
amount of $13.42 million.
Mayor Dan McLaughlin
said there was a lot of time
put into the budget by staff
and the board members.
“I’m happy that this is the
sixth year in a row where we
are not raising the tax levy,”
McLaughlin said. “We’ve got
our 23rd balanced budget in
a row, and we’re getting a lot
of work done. We’re doing a
lot of things in Orland Park,
including upgrading the Palos
Health and Fitness Center that
we’re in the process of taking
over. There’s lots of things
we’re funding this year without
creating any new taxes
or raising the tax levy. We’re
very proud of that.”
Interim Village Manager
Tim McCarthy said six special
meetings were held to
discuss the 2017 budget.
“For capital, for revenue
and for departments,” he said
of the focuses of the meetings.
Trustee Carole Griffin Ruzich,
the Finance Committee’s
chairwoman, said the budget
allocates approximately $24
million for infrastructure improvements.
Some of those
improvements are for the Orland
Park Nature Center, as
well as road and storm water
management projects.
During her comments to
the board later in the meeting,
Ruzich reminded residents
to send in their applications
for the Village’s tax
rebate program.
“Once again, as we have for
11 of the past 14 years, we are
rebating property taxes,” she
said. “The deadline for the
applications is [5 p.m. Friday,
Dec. 16]. As of a day or two
ago, only half of the eligible
residents had applied.”
Kindness is contagious
The world can be a dangerous
and mean place at
times. But McLaughlin
knows it is not always the
case in Orland Park.
“I don’t know about the
rest of you, but when you
read the newspaper every
day or watch the news, it
seems like you see nothing
but negative [stories],”
McLaughlin said. “But I
know there’s a lot of great
people in Orland Park, helping
others.”
With that in mind — and
with the assistance of Village
staff and the trustees — the
mayor developed the social
media-driven Orland Park
Kindness Campaign. In it,
he is encouraging residents
to use the hashtag #OPKind
on social media websites to
recognize residents, organizations
or businesses doing
something nice.
There also are “I am #OP-
Kind” stickers available at
the Village Hall.
After reading a proclamation
about the campaign at
Round It Up
A brief recap of action from the Dec. 5 meeting of the Orland
Park Village Board and its committees.
• During the regular meeting, Village Board members
voted 7-0 in separate motions to approve leases
for U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski and the State of Illinois
Department of Veterans’ Affairs for space inside
Village Hall. Lipinski is leasing 500 square feet for an
office space at a monthly rate of $550 for 24 months.
The VA office space is for 325 square feet, and the
board members waived rental fees, as the office
was described as being a benefit to the area’s local
veterans. The term is for 36 months.
• The Village Board also voted 7-0 to adopt an
agreement with PACE for service.
• During the Public Works Committee meeting, trustees
voted 3-0 to recommend the Village Board approve a
purchase of bulk de-icing liquid for the winter from SNI
Solutions Inc., at a cost of $1.48 per gallon.
the meeting, McLaughlin
recognized dozens of Sandburg
High School students
for their community service.
“They have been especially
kind over the years with
all the hours they contribute
to helping others or with
projects around the community,”
McLaughlin said.
The mayor gave the students
community pride
awards after they were recognized
earlier this year with the
Cook County Sheriff’s Youth
Service Medals of Honor.
Orland Park man charged in death of David Dolitsky
Bill Jones, Editor
A 74-year-old Orland Park
man allegedly responsible for
a vehicle that left the roadway
June 17, striking and killing
17-year-old David Dolitsky
outside his family’s Orland
Park home, was charged Dec.
1 with three traffic offenses
by the Orland Park Police
Department.
Ibrahim N. Ziad was
charged with driving on the
wrong side of the roadway,
failure to reduce speed to
avoid an accident and failure
to exercise due care to avoid
striking a pedestrian, according
to a press release issued
Monday, Dec. 5, by the Orland
Park Police Department.
Police said the charges
were filed following an extensive
and thorough review of
the evidence and facts. Orland
Park Police Cmdr. Tony Farrell
said that is a major part of
why charges were filed nearly
a half-year after the incident.
“We had a lot of effort and
experts that assisted us in the
investigation, and that takes
time,” he said.
The case also reportedly
was reviewed by the Cook
County State’s Attorney’s
Office.
“The whole case was reviewed
from top to bottom,”
Farrell said. “Any and all
possible charges were considered,
and these were the
charges that were appropriate,
based on facts.”
David’s mother, Laura,
said in a phone interview
Monday, Dec. 5, that the case
went back to the Cook County
State’s Attorney’s Office
twice, and she thought police
did a thorough job of investigating
the incident.
“We have to trust in the
police department and their
investigation,” she said. “It’s
not that we didn’t try. Of
course you want the [strongest
charge], but not if someone
doesn’t [deserve it].
That’s just something a family
has to soak up.”
She added that while the
closing of the police investigation
brings with it some resolution,
it does not necessarily
bring closure to the family.
“You find it still hard to accept,”
she said.
David Dolitsky was mowing
his family’s lawn in the
100 block of the Silo Ridge
subdivision when he was
struck and killed by a 2009
Mercedes-Benz sedan that
veered off the road around
4:30 p.m. June 17, according
to a press release issued the
same day by the Orland Park
Police Department. The vehicle
was traveling westbound
on Silo Ridge Road North,
coming from Silo Ridge
Road East, when it veered
off road, hitting the teen and
a brick mailbox, police said.
Dolitsky was transported
to St. James Hospital in
Olympia Fields, where he
was pronounced dead at 6:45
p.m., according to the Cook
County Medical Examiner.
Ziad was not injured in the
incident, police said.
When asked whether or
not the family intended to
continue pursuing the case
further on its own, outside of
the criminal charges, Laura
Dolitsky confirmed.
“Yes, we are,” she said.
“We’ll just let the attorneys
do what they do.”
A spokesperson from the
Cook County State’s Attorney’s
Office said she did not
have any further information
to provide on the traffic
charges.
A call to Ziad for comment
on the charges was not returned,
as of press time.
Police Reports
Man allegedly tried to take jewelry from Orland Park department store
Tony L. Guthrie, 47, of
14828 Michigan Ave. in
Dolton, was charged with
felony retail theft and misdemeanor
possession of drug
paraphernalia after he allegedly
tried to take seven jewelry
items valued at $419.33
from a department store at
Orland Square. He reportedly
took the items off a rack,
used a blade to remove the
jewelry from its packaging,
concealed the items in his
jacket and tried to leave the
store. Guthrie also had a glass
pipe inside a glove inside a
jacket pocket, police said.
Nov. 17
• Andrea Jean Drain, 40, of
3722 S. Indiana Ave. in Chicago;
William E. Owens, 35,
of 15555 S. Walden Parkway
in Chicago; and Jordan Key,
50, of 11031 King Drive in
Chicago; each were charged
with one count of theft/possession
of stolen property
after they reportedly were
found to be in possession
of various items stolen from
Marshalls after an SUV was
stopped in the 14500 block
of John Humphrey Drive.
Drain also was charged
with possession of a narcotic
instrument. The driver
— Ashley N. Powers, 20,
of 5721 Marshfield Ave. in
Chicago — was charged
with failure to signal, driving
while license suspended
and operation of an uninsured
motor vehicle. Another
occupant of the vehicle
— Daron A. Lipscomb, 21,
of 6023 Laflin Ave. in Chicago
— was arrested on an
active Will County warrant.
Police reportedly were investigating
a possible retail
theft when they were led to
a vehicle occupied by the
five aforementioned people.
Powers allegedly turned left
from the center lane of Orland
Square Drive onto John
Humphrey Drive while being
observed by police, and
then changed lanes without
using a turn signal.
A bag containing Marshalls
merchandise, some of
it still with tags, was found
on the floor between Owens
and Key, police said. Police
also reportedly found a purse
on the floor containing items
with Marshalls tags and
some with security sensors
still attached. A sock inside
the vehicle contained several
hypodermic syringes, a
burnt spoon with white residue
and a shoelace; police
said.
• Rasha Jamilanwar Alkurdi,
42, of 9050 Roberts Road
in Hickory Hills, and Sali
Mohamed Altarifi, 28, of the
same address but a different
unit number, were each
charged with retail theft after
they allegedly tried to
take items from a department
store at Orland Square.
They had children with them
and used the strollers to conceal
the merchandise, police
said. Alkurdi reportedly took
three items valued at a total
of $72.40. Altarifi allegedly
tried to take one item valued
at $45.
A critter carol: Mokena
music school supports local
As the snow gently fell
outside the afternoon of Dec.
4, students of Mokena’s All
About Music & Children’s
Theatre embraced the spirit
of the winter wonderland
outside, performing a variety
of holiday tunes for their
friends and family at this
year’s Caroling for Critters
music recital.
The event celebrated the
holidays with music and
puppies at the Christian
Community Center at Saint
John’s United Church of
Christ in Mokena.
The third official Caroling
for Critters holiday recital
hosted by All About Music
this was the second year in a
row that the event also benefitted
Cache Creek Animal
Rescue in New Lenox.
“We’re big animal people,”
said Todd Beebe, co-owner
of All About Music with his
wife, Connie Johnson. “We
don’t have kids of our own,
so our dogs are like our babies.
… There’s so many
dogs that need a home at
shelters. So, it’s good to bring
some attention to them.”
Each year, All About Music
presents its holiday recital
as a benefit to an animal
shelter. In addition to taking
donations of pet care supplies,
volunteers from Cache
Creek were on site with three
dogs available for adoption.
“The reason we like Cache
Creek is because they let you
adopt today,” Beebe said. “We
like the idea that people can
leave with an animal today.”
Cache Creek is a no-kill
shelter for cats and dogs. All
available animals have been
spayed or neutered, microchipped
and are up to date
on their shots, according to
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
Village celebrates Nelson
Road extension with ribbon
cutting
Hosting ribbon cuttings
for road openings are uncommon,
according to New
Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann,
but he thought a ceremony
for Nelson Road’s
extension was necessary.
The finished project is
expected to be vital in benefiting
vehicle traffic flow
throughout town, which is
why Baldermann and other
Village officials came together
Dec. 2 for a ribbon
cutting upon its completion.
“This is something we’ve
told the community that we
were going to do and wanted
for decades, quite frankly,”
Baldermann said. “This is
something they’ve wanted
for a long time because we
have limited north-south
travel.”
The extension is to provide
less congestion for the
north-south roadways of Cedar
Road and Gear Drive. It
connects Nelson Road from
Haven Avenue to Illinois
Highway, which is approximately
a mile strip.
“It doesn’t seem like
much, but it really is quite a
bit,” Baldermann said. “It’s
more about giving alternate
routes for people to get north
and south in town.”
Construction for the
roadway started early in
the summer, after financing
was approved in April. Baldermann
said the extension
“was more than just building
a road.” Years of negotiations
between the Village
and property owners to acquire
the land necessary kept
the project from being done
sooner. It also needed additional
approvals because of a
gas pipeline in the construction
area.
“I’m just really grateful to
our staff that works so hard
out there,” Baldermann said.
“We worked with our firm
and construction; everyone
did a wonderful job getting
this done and open on time.
This will be helpful to the
residents in many ways.”
Schilling dedicates buddy
bench to late third-grader
Tristan Grabner’s time on
this earth may have been
short, but his legacy will
stand the test of time.
On Dec. 2, a bright blue
bench bearing the name of
“Tristan’s Buddy Bench” was
unveiled on the playground
of Schilling School in honor
of the third-grader who died
overnight on Sept. 6. The
bench is a testament to the
8-year-old’s larger-than-life
personality, Schilling School
principal Candis Gasa said.
“We’ve been trying to do
something that’s very personal
to him and to who he
was,” Gasa said. “We want to
continue his spirit here, and
we felt the Buddy Bench was
perfect, considering who he
was to the students and how
many lives he touched of the
staff.”
It was an emotional ceremony
for Grabner’s parents,
Nicole Bolda and Jim
Grabner, who held Tristan’s
2-year-old sister Aubrey.
Bolda fought back tears
while unveiling the bench to
the entire Schilling School
student body. It is painted in
a shade of Cubs’ blue for her
son’s favorite team.
The Schilling School students
gasped with delight at
their new playground fixture.
It will serve as a place for
them to go when they are in
need of a buddy.
“When you’re outside here
at recess and you feel like
you need a friend, come sit
on the Buddy Bench,” Gasa
said. “And those of you who
see a friend sitting at the
Buddy Bench, please join
that friend. We all want to be
an amazing friend, just like
Tristan was.”
Update your man’s
look this holiday
with some classic
but trendy essentials to keep
the fire burning.
We all want our man to
look good.
Tops on my list and the
most problematic area for
guys: jeans. Denim is our
Pour les garçons
go-to these days, and investing
in a good pair for your
beau will be worth every
penny spent.
Stick with a straight leg in
a cool wash. Spend a little
extra money for the perfect
fit. You’ll be doing a double
take once he puts these puppies
on.
Next up is a crewneck
sweater. Pick a color that
accents his eyes. Soft and
somewhat fitted.
Underneath the wellfitting
sweater should be a
layering T-shirt. It’s time to
ditch the Hanes and pop for
a T-shirt that doesn’t come
in a plastic bag. A smooth,
fine-fitting soft fabric that
hugs the body and doesn’t
add extra bulk.
These layering tees cost
a bit more, but the fabrics
are so much better than your
basic cotton T-shirt. You’ll
love the look and feel of
them, and he will, too.
If you’re guy hasn’t
jumped on the chukka wagon,
buy him a pair. They’re
everywhere, in every color,
at every price point.
Looking for something
a bit more extravagant for
your beau? A new time
piece. Go bulky in size, yet
classic in look and style.
Last on his list: cologne.
Although guys are partial to
certain scents, picking out
something that moves your
radar is going to move his.
From the Editor
An enlightening conversation, tour of Orland
BILL JONES
bill@opprairie.com
For all of 24 hours, I
did not care for Orland
Park’s new holiday
lights.
Then, I (mostly) changed
my mind.
Right after Thanksgiving.
I got a couple of emails, as
I tend to get when residents
find their latest source of
outrage and/or confusion.
“I was driving around town
when I notice orland parks
brand new Christmas decorations
on the street lights. what
are they? no bells no snowflakes
no wreaths or candy
canes or trees. [sic]”
“Would you ever think of
asking the village of Orland
park what the new holiday
decorations on the light poles
are suppose to be and how
they cost the village and what
happened to the old snowflakes
and snowmen? There
seems to be a lot of confusion
among the people I know as
to what the decorations are
suppose to be. [sic]”
In the scheme of things,
these were relatively tame inquiries.
To my understanding,
these are some of the nicer
ways people have phrased
their questions/displeasure
about the lights.
I was heading over to the
Orland Park Police station
anyway, when I finally saw
some of the lights along Ravinia
Avenue, up on the light
poles — a green O, boxed
by more green, with some
other green things dividing it
into quadrants. No, it’s not a
reticle, and, no, it’s not Irish,
despite the fact that it only
appears in green and closely
resembles a Celtic cross.
The Village has a longer
explanation about what it all
means, but the short version
is that it is Orland’s new wayfinding
logo — one for which
residents provided input. And
officials thought this would
be the perfect time, and way,
to unveil it en masse, according
to the Village’s public
information officer, Joe La
Margo.
The wayfinding light poles
are complemented by some
other light pole designs —
spotted on 143rd Street,
near LaGrange Road — in
green and white, featuring
this swish and swirl design,
or, in La Margo’s parlance,
a “simple yet celebratory
champagne-like design.”
“It’s wintery,” La Margo
said in a phone interview
with The Orland Park Prairie.
“It’s not specific.”
And I think that’s why I
don’t like them very much.
I’m not one of those types to
start complaining about the
“reason for the season” or exclaiming
“nobody puts Santa
baby in the corner.” I’m all
for trying something new.
That said, there’s something
so “not specific” about
them that there is really
nothing (or little) that says
“holidays” at all. Which is
why I was surprised to learn
from La Margo that the
Village intends to take them
down in the opening weeks of
January. Why not just leave
them up year-round? Keep
the celebration going. Keep
reminding people they are in
Orland Park.
Especially if what La
Margo said about the Village’s
goal being, at least in
part, to help draw people to
the business district has merit.
He noted the Village looked
at places like Wheeling and
Rosemont, which incorporated
town branding into
their lights. They also noticed
the draw New Lenox has
received for its large, lighted
Santa Claus.
“People are going in droves
to see this ginormous Santa,”
La Margo said. “And what
are they going to do when
they get there? Shop and eat.”
This — and the fact that
Orland Park has not done a
major overhaul of its Christmas
decorations in roughly
30 years — is what helps
officials like La Margo justify
the $182,890.34 price tag on
the new lighting.
Maybe it really is justified.
As the Village will point out,
a major part of the reason
property taxes have been
abated are the sales taxes generated
in large part by Orland
Square and the stores that surround
it. So, trying to attract
people to the area — especially
after the struggles some
area businesses have reported
because of the LaGrange
Road construction — is a
noble effort. If it works.
If it were just those light
poles, I would say, “Not a
chance in hell this attracts
more people here.” If my adventures
had simply stopped
here, I’d still be slinging
hurtful, sarcastic words at the
light poles, but I opted to dig
deeper instead. I called La
Margo and went on a more
extensive tour of the village.
What I found was Crescent
Park. I saw it from across
LaGrange first and was taken
aback. All of the trees are
decorated in brilliant lights.
At the center of the park
stands a green origami tree.
“Cool,” I thought.
But then I tracked back to
Village Hall, and that’s where
the real action can be found.
There is a giant teddy
bear in lights, along with
a gift package. A ribbon
that doubles as an art piece.
Maybe a less “holiday” but
still beautiful lotus flower,
as well as butterflies. And an
unreal ornament decoration
large enough to walk through,
which is highly recommended,
as the ceiling offers more
beautiful globes.
The lights are completely
stunning — and just down
the street, there is another
fantastic tree in red and white
(you can see this and some of
the other key decorations on
Page 8 this week), one of 128
around the village — and I’m
not the only one who thinks
so. La Margo noted that despite
some of the complaints,
other residents have called
to compliment the Village,
specifically on the Village
Center, and I don’t doubt it.
On my way out of there,
I walked into another man’s
shot of the decorations. I
apologized, but it was as
though he didn’t hear me.
He was just gushing over the
“ridiculous” beauty of the
display. He seemed to be in
disbelief, awe. He also asked
me if I had seen the lights
down by the train station,
and noted if I had not it was a
must-see display.
Not only is the Village
Center display phenomenal
but also anyone who favors
the old decorations can find
the ones that were still working
near Centennial Park, on
the drive to the ice rink. And
the snowflakes that used to
be up on the light poles still
are; they are just on Harlem
Avenue now, meaning more
people are benefitting from
the decorations than ever
across Orland Park’s roughly
26 square miles of village.
“We’re decorating a lot
more places than we’ve
done in the past,” La Margo
confirmed.
It’s worth a night cruising
around and checking out
what the different areas have
to offer. That’s part of what
makes the holiday season fun.
And, at the end of the day,
if you’re still upset about
Orland’s new decorations —
other than the cost, which
is your right to question as
a taxpayer — lighten up.
They’re only lights.
or hanging the Christmas
lights, take a bit of time
for something profound:
Read, or listen in audio form,
to one of the four Gospels.
Matthew, Mark, Luke and
John tell the story of Jesus’
life. Their narratives attempt
to reveal the words and
actions of the man, Jesus.
We see him through their
eyes and imagine his voice
through their recollections.
In reading, we notice that
Jesus was not afraid to push
against the norm, to confront
the religious in their false
piety, to call as his children
those who had been otherwise
relegated to the margins
of society. He touched the
untouchable and invested in
people of ill repute.
You will note that he rejected
any attempt to elevate
him as a political leader.
He had no need for earthly
titles or power, because he
realized that his life had
purpose that came from
beyond the realm of his terrestrial
existence.
He had come only to do
his Father’s will. He was, as
John recounts, “full of grace
and truth.”
Grace reflects the overall
character of God’s’ relationship
to us who are his creation.
Possessing every right to
judge and condemn us for
our rebellion against his will,
instead, and beyond our comprehension,
he sent the Eternal
Word, his Son, Jesus.
To all who will believe, he
offers yet today the breaking
of bonds and the shattering
of chains. No longer do we
live as prisoners of our own
carnal desires or shameful
pasts. For Jesus the man,
and fully God, bore for our
sake the sin of humanity and
emerged the Victor over sin,
death and the devil.
This is His “truth,” the
truth that filled His life and
reaches out to you and to me
this day. It is the truth for
every seeker, every doubter,
every lost and lonely soul.
Jesus came for you, to set
you free, to restore you in
relationship to our heavenly
Father. Read and believe.
Sandburg coach uses lifetime
of experience to help freshman
Betty Burfeind
recounts career,
mentoring and more,
looks to future
Brittany Kapa, Assistant Editor
The first time Betty Burfeind
was near water, she
screamed and refused to go
in past her waist.
Little did she know that a
lifetime of experience later,
the water would be like her
second home.
“My family used to like
to go to the beach, except I
didn’t like the beach,” Burfeind
said. “I was afraid of
the water, for some reason.”
Burfeind’s mother enrolled
her in a YMCA swimming
class, and it would take her
two weeks of encouragement
from Phyllis Gurgle, a swim
instructor at the YMCA, for
Burfeind to get into the water.
Six months later, Gurgle was
telling Burfeind’s mother she
was a natural.
Burfeind was just 8 years
old when she was introduced
to swimming. Sixty-two
years later, it is still a major
part of her life.
Five days a week, Burfeind
can be found at the Lincoln-
Way East swimming pool at
7:30 a.m. swimming — practicing
— for two hours. At 70
years old, she is still swimming
competitively, among
other hobbies.
Burfeind holds several National
Senior Games Association
records for her efforts.
She is a staple of the swimming
program at Sandburg,
and for 20 years coached at
Andrew High School. She
coached Olympic silver medalist
Christine Magnuson
when she was younger, and
helped another young student
learn his potential.
Burfeind grew up in a time
when women’s sports were
not well established. She has
a storied past, and that story
started at the Harvey YMCA
pool.
The start of something
It did not take long for
Burfeind to find success in
the sport of swimming. Since
there were no girls swimming
teams at high schools in the
early 1960s Burfeind swam
in competitions at her local
YMCA.
“When I was 15, I won
all three of my events in the
YMCA State Championship
meet,” Burfeind said. “That
was the first time I ever won
three events, and it was the
first time I could say I was a
state champion by myself.”
Burfeind finished first in
the 100-yard freestyle, 200
free, and the 200 free relay.
A few years after that, Burfeind
took her only break
from competitive swimming
to attend Eastern Illinois University,
and that was only because
the university did not
offer a women’s swimming
program.
When Burfeind was 30
years old, she started competing
in the U.S. Masters
Swimming program, where
she found more success.
“I was the alternate,” Burfeind
said of the 1983 competition.
“One of the swimmers
decided to not go to the
competition. So, I became a
member of that relay. I had to
anchor it.”
Women do not generally
anchor a co-ed relay race,
but Burfeind rose to the challenge.
Betty Burfeind, a coach with the Sandburg swimming
program, shows off her medals at the 2009 National Senior
Games Association Championship in California.
Photo submitted
“I went my fastest split
there,” Burfeind said of her
28.3-second split, which was
only slightly slower than her
27.2 second time — recorded
when she was 15 years old in
high school.
Leading by example
Throughout her coaching
career, Burfeind has harnessed
a lifetime’s worth
of information to aid upand-coming
swimmers. She
knows what it is like to be up
early in the morning — at the
pool — practicing for hours.
It is this wealth of knowledge
that makes her a great addi-
Betty
From Page 17
tion to any school’s swimming
program.
Nowadays, Sandburg students
get to call Burfeind
coach, and James Caliendo
said he could not be happier
that he has Burfeind on his
side.
“She’s invaluable to our
program,” Caliendo said.
“First of all, she’s a technician,
as far as teaching skills.
She works with our young
kids — our first-year swimmers
— our more inexperienced
kids that come out for
the team.”
Caliendo coined the term
“Betty’s Bombers” for Burfeind’s
freshman program.
The boys varsity swimming
team is to swim 1 million
yards this season, and the
workload can often scare off
incoming freshman.
“She teaches such great
technique that they become
hooked on swimming right
away,” Caliendo said. “Her
positive approach — the
way that she works with the
kids — she instills the love
of the sport in the kids.
“Without the right approach
with the younger
kids, you just scare them
away, because it is a hard
sport.”
Burfeind uses her wealth
of experience to motivate
both past and present students.
One technique she
has used in seasons past is a
chart.
In years past, Burfeind
found herself with roughly
20 freshman to teach, and
she found it hard to keep
them all motivated. The
chart provided a visual example
and encouraged them
to beat the coach’s time.
If the boys could match or
best her U.S. Masters Swimming
time or her National
Senior Games Association
time, they received a gold or
blue star.
Everyone’s name is up
there, along with Burfeind’s
records for the different
strokes she swims. It was
motivation that served her
students well in the past.
“We don’t cut freshman;
that’s our policy, and Anthony
Bonnar is the perfect
reason why,” Burfeind said.
“If the freshman doesn’t like
it, they’ll cut themselves.”
Bonnar is the go-to example
of a student who
benefitted from Burfeind’s
unique coaching style.
Bonnar could barely make
length of the pool when
he started as a freshman.
It was through Burfeind’s
constant encouragement
and instruction of technique
that gave Bonnar the
foundation he needed.
Four years later, Bonnar
made it to the 2012 Illinois
High School Association
State Swimming & Diving
competition.
“I took him to the level
where coach [Caliendo]
could train him,” Burfeind
said. “I gave him the basics.
... It was so exciting to see
him get a medal in the state
meet.
“I wanted to cry for him.
It just goes to show you that
if you put your mind to it —
and you work really hard at
something — you can never
be surprised at what you
might accomplish.”
Bonnar finished with a silver
medal for the 200-yard
freestyle relay.
The evolution of swimming
It’s with a wealth of
knowledge and 62 years of
experience that Burfeind
has seen the evolution of the
sport firsthand.
“The [students] just keep
getting faster,” Burfeind
said.
She attributes this fact to
a multitude of factors. The
knowledge and understanding
of the science behind
swimming have played a
huge role in the students’
ability to get faster, she said.
Training programs that include
strength workouts,
where good nutrition is a
heavy focus, compounded
with more practice time in
the pool have created faster
swimmers.
“It’s amazing — the
amount of research that’s
gone into it, and how far
we’ve come,” Burfeind said.
Part of that research is the
technology used not only
in the suits swimmers wear
but plays a role in the equipment
used, as well. Starting
blocks, the use of lane lines,
and other components all
are designed with physics in
mind to decrease drag. Ultimately
giving swimmers the
best tools from the start.
According to Burfeind, it
is why swimmers have been
able to consistently shave
seconds off of their times.
Milliseconds in swimming
can mean the difference between
first and second place,
as well as being able to shave
seconds off break records.
Something even as simple
as goggles were not always
around for swimmers to use,
and that was something Burfeind
had to get used to in
her own career, as well.
“When you start to use
goggles, they come off a
lot,” Burfeind said. “You
have to find a pair of goggles
that fit your eye socket, you
have to put them on your
head right and your dive has
to be perfect so you don’t
lose those goggles.
“It’s like driving a car, and
not using your windshield
wipers; that would be like
swimming without goggles.”
Burfeind did not use her
first pair of goggles until she
was 38 years old in 1985.
Burfeind still tells her students
to take their time and
find the pair that fits them
correctly.
Throughout Burfeind’s
life, she has truly seen the
evolution of the sport. She’s
continually surprised by
how fast swimmers are, and
every year they keep breaking
records. She keeps expecting
there to be a plateau
in the times, but that’s something
she’s still waiting for.
“We haven’t seen it yet,”
Burfeind said of what the future
holds.
after her then 7-year-old son
Martin had been diagnosed
with leukemia in 1993. Ms.
Kisel discovered that giving
her son a toy after each
procedure provided a calming
distraction from his pain.
Martin celebrated his 23rd
anniversary of remission
from the disease earlier this
year.
Toys or gifts may be
dropped off through Dec. 23
at three Orland Fire Protection
District locations. They
the orland park prairie | December 15, 2016 | 21
The Dish
Girl in the Park offer beer, bourbon, burgers
Brittany Kapa, Assistant Editor
For Jayme and Robert
Parker, their new restaurant
is as much about family as it
is the food.
It also is about the best
bourbon, burgers and beer the
couple could locally source.
Jayme, 31, brings her culinary
education from Robert
Morris University, her studies
in Italy and her family’s
love of cooking into her
newest creation. An Orland
Park local, Jayme has created
a menu that combines locally
sourced food with her
culinary experience to create
mouth watering flavors. It
strives for quality and flavors
patrons could expect to
find in a restaurant in Chicago,
but places those elements
in their own backyard.
Girl in the Park is the
couple’s brainchild, a dream
Jayme thought would not
happen until much later in
their lives.
“When we were dating,
we would talk about when
we retired,” Jayme said.
“We’d probably open up a
little tiki hut on the beach in
Key West, Florida, with a really
small kitchen with only
two things.”
The couple never expected
this opportunity to fall into
their laps. The Parkers took
over Rokwelz, the restaurant
that previously occupied the
space, in September, and officially
opened the space as
Girl in the Park on Nov. 3.
The couple’s desire to provide
a family-friendly dining
experience in Jayme’s
hometown played a major
role in not only the design
of the restaurant but the food
offered, as well.
One of the most important
things for Jayme was the
quality of the ingredients.
All of the restaurant’s meats
are antibiotic and hormone
free. The food is locally
sourced, as much as possible,
and the seafood is wild
caught, never farm raised.
“The concept of us being
local was more than just my
wife being from the area,”
Robert said. “It’s Orland being
a great family community
that it is, but it is also a
very corporate area.”
Keeping everything local
even means carrying
Brickstone Brewery’s APA
from Bourbonnais. Another
key factor is the extensive
small-batch bourbon list and
house-infused vodka that
creates some of the restaurant’s
unique drinks. That
local theme also carries over
to the high-top tables in the
bar area, which are made
from reclaimed barn wood
from a Jones Dairy Farm in
Wilmington.
“It fits our decor without
having to spend the money
for some type of mass-manufactured
or foreign wood
that we didn’t know where it
came from,” Robert said.
Perhaps what is more impressive
is that the couple
never closed the restaurant
during construction. All of
the construction was done at
night, or sections of the restaurant
were closed off for a
day or two at a time.
The menu
Jayme could not create a
menu without including her
92-year-old nana’s meatballs.
The Dirty Frank ($13.50) burger at Orland Park’s Girl in the Park features a house-made burger mix with cheddar cheese,
an over-easy egg, bacon, fancy sauce and shredded beef. The burgers is served with Parmesan and truffle oil fries, and
pairs well with Brickstone Brewery’s APA. Brittany Kapa/22nd Century Media
The meatballs are handmade
daily, and everything from
the bread crumbs to the sauce
are made from scratch. It is a
recipe that means a lot to her
personally, and it was something
she wanted to share
with her customers.
“Growing up cooking with
my mom, and cooking with
my nana — she’s first generation
from Italy — she’s had
the same sauce recipe from
when she started cooking,”
Jayme said. “I wanted to
bring that family aspect to it.”
The Dirty Frank ($13.50)
burger, another dish that is
close to Jayme’s heart, as it is
named after her beloved Italian
Mastiff, Frank. The burger’s
name was inspired by her
dog’s love of all things messy.
In order to socialize a young
Frank, Jayme would bring
him to her softball games in
the summer. She would also
bring a bone, to keep Frank
busy during the game.
“Every time I brought him
a bone, he would never eat
it,” Jayme said. “He’d bury
it in the sand. Every time
you look over at him, his
face is covered in sand. My
friend’s husband would say,
‘Man, Frank, you’re dirty.
I’m calling you dirty Frank
from now on!’”
The name stuck, and it is
the perfect name for a burger
that has shredded beef atop
an over-easy egg (free range,
of course), and the “Step
Brothers”-inspired fancy
sauce of ketchup and mayonnaise.
Get napkins and ask
for extra, because this burger
is Frank’s twin.
Never wanting to leave
anyone out, Jayme created a
menu that can cater to anyone’s
dietary needs. Realizing
the need for healthy menu
options, Jayme has provided
meals that will not kill calorie
counts but still aim to please
when it comes to taste.
“We brought in some
healthier foods,” Robert
said. “With the Sportsplex
being next door that was a
big market that Rokwelz
didn’t hit well.”
One of their healthy option
meals is the WOK It Out
BOWL ($9), which features
as a base brown rice, sautéed
broccoli, carrots, snow peas,
water chestnuts, mushrooms
and onions.
“We like all different kinds
of music, and that comes
from an old-school hip-hop
song,” Jayme said, explaining
that the dish’s name is
a play on words for UNK’s
“Walk it Out.”
The dish can be customized
to the patron’s tastes
with a choice of teriyaki
spicy stir-fry (“Pain is
Good”) sauce. The customer
can leave the bowl as is, or
add shrimp, salmon, pulled
beef or chicken to the bowl
for extra charges.
The extras
For those looking for a
unique drink experience to
match the culinary one, Girl
in the Park has thought of that,
too. Bar manager Christopher
Krause goes the extra mile for
his customers by infusing his
vodka and bourbon in house.
His newest invention will
include Jayme’s caramelized
candied bacon to complement
— and offset — the sweet
breakfast cocktail, made with
bacon-infused Old Forester
bourbon, freshly squeezed
orange juice and maple syrup.
The menu at Girl in the
Park is expected to see changes
in the future. Jayme said
once they figure out what
customers like and what they
do not, the menu will reflect
those opinions, as well as the
season.
“We are family owned,”
Jayme said. “We want to
make sure our customers feel
that, and know that they’re
special.”

Orland’s Joe Kuligoski
contributes to EIU men’s
basketball team
As of the first two games
of the season, Eastern Illinois
University men’s
basketball team was 1-1. In
those games, No. 24 forward
Joe Kuligoski — a 6-foot-
6, 220-pound senior from
Orland Park — averaged
2 points and had half a rebound
in relief.
Following four games, he
was averaging 1.3 points,
0.7, rebounds and 0.7 assists
per game. At that point, he
had a season-high 13 minutes
versus Western Illinois,
with two assists.
Following six games, he
was averaging 1 point, 0.8
rebounds and 0.5 assists per
game.
Following eight games, he
was averaging 2 points, 0.7
rebounds and 0.3 assists. He
had eight points at UIC (3-
of-4 on field goals), with a
then-season-high 17 minutes
of playing time.
Following nine games, he
was averaging 1.7 points,
0.6 rebounds and 0.3 assists.
Through those games,
he was .364 (4-of-11) on
field goals, .250 (1-of-4) on
3-pointers and .750 (3-of-4)
on free throws.
10 Questions
with Joey Jenkot
Joey Jenkot is a junior on
the boys swimming team, as
well as the water polo team,
at Sandburg High School.
He is working toward setting
a school record this
season as a swimmer.
How did you get started
with swimming?
When I was 5 or 6, my
parents signed me up for
the club team in Orland, and
I’ve just been swimming
ever since then.
What keeps you
motivated?
The desire to keep winning.
We have a pretty good
team this year — last year,
we were good, too — we
want to keep some momentum
from last year.
What are your goals for
this season?
I want to break the varsity
100-yard breaststroke
record. I have the freshman
and sophomore [record], but
I want to break the varsity
one, too. At the first invite, I
swam a 1 minute, 2.05 seconds,
and the record for the
100-yard breast is a 0:58.2.
If you had a house
party, who would be
your celebrity guest?
Probably Ryan Lochte,
because he seems like he’d
be pretty fun at a party.
What’s the best prank
you or the team has
pulled?
After practice, if you leave
your backpack unguarded,
then you get your backpack
flipped inside out. It’s probably
one of the better pranks
people pull.
If you’re talking to a
girl, who would you
want your wingman to
be?
Aidan Farley, or my other
friend Kyle Fox. They know
I do stupid stuff, so they’d
prevent me from doing those
stupid things.
What are you binge
watching on Netflix
right now?
I always binge watch “The
Office.” I’ve watched it in its
entirety six times through.
Even though I keep watching,
it still gets funnier each
time. Dwight and Jim’s feud
is probably the best part of
the show.
If you could buy
22nd Century Media File Photo
anything, what would
it be?
I would probably get season
tickets to every Chicago
sports team.
If you went into
Walgreens with a few
dollars, what would you
buy?
I would buy Ben & Jerry’s.
Cherry Garcia is the
best flavor.
What’s your favorite
book?
I read “Unbroken” recently.
I really like the World
War II era, the survival aspect
of the story and how it’s
also based on a true story.
It’s a comeback story of a
POW, it’s easy to connect
with because he was also
an athlete and he was in the
military. I want to be in the
military, too, so it was easy
to connect with.
Eagles dominate Fenwick in home opener
Students find
inspiration against
coach’s former
school
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
It may have just been a
dual meet, but there was a
feeling that there was a little
more to it when Fenwick
took on the Sandburg boys
swimming team this past
week.
For starters, it was the final
swimming home opener
for Sandburg coach Jim
Caliendo, who is in his 40th
season of coaching the sport.
And what better way to start
things off than to have a dual
meet against the school he
coached to three consecutive
state championships in the
early 1990s.
And what better coach to
go up against than Fenwick
coach Luke McGuire, who
was captain on Caliendo’s
first state title team in 1990?
Plus, what better result for
the Eagles, who showed this
could be a special sendoff
for Caliendo with a 117-68
victory in the nonconference
dual meet Friday, Dec. 9, in
Orland Park?
“They’re a good team to
““We were going up against a competitive team, and
I just worked as hard as I can to get that win. It felt
to me like it was a close meet all the way through.”
Nick Jackson — Sandburg boys swimmer, on a dual win over Fenwick
have early in the season,
because they always race
well,” Caliendo said of facing
Fenwick. “I like to put
our kids in those situations
to see what we have. We
went to the Stevenson Invite
[Dec. 3] and swam against
some great competition
there. Now, we had Fenwick.
So, that’s a great way
to start the year.
“It’s fun to go against
Luke. He was the captain of
the 1990 team. So, it’s really
cool and friendly when he
comes here. His family is a
big part of my life.”
The two programs have
alternated hosting a dual
meet against each other for
more than a decade. Mc-
Guire was more than happy
to take his team to Orland
Park one more time to face
his old coach.
“It’s a blast, and I love
seeing him,” said McGuire,
who has been head coach of
the Friars for eight years and
in the program for 11. “He’s
still my coach. I watch what
he does, what little tricks he
does to get his kids going.
“Coach Cal has been a
great friend, and we will be
back here for the invite.”
This past week, against
the Friars (3-1), Sandburg
(1-0) certainly did well in
capturing first in 10 of the 12
events.
Senior Aidan Farley and
junior Joey Jenkot each won
a pair of individual events to
lead the way. Farley was on
the two winning Eagles relay
teams, too, but the final one
produced one of the three
close finishes of the night.
That was the 400-yard
freestyle relay, in which senior
Nick Jackson gave everything
he had in the anchor
position to hold off the Friars
by .13 of a second. Jackson
gave so much to getting
the foursome of Farley, juniors
Kyle Fox and Cooper
Reiher, and himself a time
of 3:21.71 that he got physically
sick after the relay.
“Afterward, I had to find a
garbage can,” said Jackson,
who threw up twice during
the meet. “We were going up
against a competitive team,
and I just worked as hard as
I can to get that win. It felt to
me like it was a close meet
all the way through.”
The Fenwick foursome of
Liam Hutchinson, Kyle Poland,
Tommy Bartecki and
Payton Comstock finished
with a time of 3:21.84.
“That was a big swim for
Nick,” Caliendo said. “He’s
never been an anchor, so it
was a nervous moment for
him to come through in that
type of situation. Even if it
was a simple dual meet, it
was a big moment in a pressure
situation.”
Jackson (50.25 seconds)
also won the 100 free by
edging Bartecki (51.04).
Plus, he led off for the winning
200 free relay team
(1:31.08) that also included
Jenkot, senior Ben Mars and
Farley. They won by just
over a second against Comstock,
Poland, Dan Lynch
and Hutchinson (1:32.10).
Farley (1:44.13) won the
200 free over Hutchinson
(1:45.26). Then, he captured
the 500 free (4:41.64)
by exactly 7 seconds over
Hutchinson (4:48.64).
Jenkot (2:07) defeated
sophomore teammate Brendan
Lee (2:09.43) to win the
200 individual medley. Jenkot
also took honors in the
100 breaststroke (1:02.66)
over Lynch (1:04.73).
“Aidan swam really fast
in the 200 and the 500,”
Caliendo said. “He’s really
feeling good. And Joey had
a really good swim in the
breaststroke.”
Fox (23.30) also won a
close race for the Eagles by
edging Poland (23.32) in the
50 free. Sandburg took the
Top 3 spots in 100 butterfly,
as Carter Thoss (54.77) won
it, fellow junior Andrew Sutkus
(58.21) was second and
Mars (58.31) took third.
The Top 3 spots in diving
also went to the Eagles.
Senior Leo Espino (241.35)
won, while junior Ahmad
Albzour (174.70) was second
and freshman Cody
Thill (137.80) placed third.
Bartecki was the lone individual
winner for Fenwick,
capturing the 100 backstroke
(57.40). Thoss (58.13) was
second.
The Friars also won the
initial event of the evening,
the 200 medley relay. There
Bartecki, Lynch, Kevin Finn
and Poland (1:42.68) just
beat out the Sandburg squad
of Thoss, Jenkot, Reiher and
Fox (1:42.81).
The season may just be
underway, but there was no
holding back for Jackson
and the Eagles.
“Since coach used to be
there, it’s really competitive,
and we have that rivalry,”
Jackson said of facing Fenwick.
“That brought out the
competitiveness in me, and I
had to push my body to the
limit.”
The Eagles were to host
Consolidated High School
District 230 rival Stagg
Tuesday, Dec. 13, in a key
SouthWest Suburban Conference
meet. This Saturday,
Dec. 17, they are slated to
travel to the Peoria Richwoods
Invite, which starts at
8:30 a.m.
At 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec.
20, Sandburg is slated to
host Lincoln-Way Central
in another SWSC dual meet.
Then the Eagles are scheduled
to turn around and travel
to the Lincoln-Way Central
Invite at 1 p.m. Dec. 27.
Basketball
From Page 38
outscored Andrew 15-11,
thanks to two 3-pointers by
Kennedy Sabutis and another
3-pointer made by Morgan
McAuliffe (11 points).
But Signore kept her team
in the game, scoring seven
points in the third.
In the fourth, Andrew’s
defense improved, leading
to a 12-7 run to close out the
game and tie it. Nine of those
points came from Signore.
“The [defensive] effort
wasn’t necessarily lacking
in the middle of the game,
but it was lackluster,” Matz
said. “There was effort there,
but I didn’t think it was consistent
effort. We’d show
spurts. But once we got later
into the game, there were no
spurts anymore; we played at
one intensity, one speed. That
was really impressive for me
to see out of these kids.”
Matz said his team’s noquit
attitude was what impressed
him most.
“When it mattered most,
we came together,” he said.
For the Eagles, the Andrew
comeback spoiled
what had been a dominant
third quarter, during which
Sandburg scored 15 points to
grab a five-point lead heading
into the final frame.
“I think the biggest difference
was that Andrew
wanted it more than us,”
Fotopoulos said. “We didn’t
play good defense. During
the whole game, we had a
tempo. But toward the fourth
quarter, our defense broke
down. That was a big issue
for us.”
Late foul trouble also hurt
the Eagles, with senior center
Megan Hardesty fouling
out down the stretch.
“It’s hard to win a game
when you’re letting girls
shoot two free throws every
time,” Fotopoulos said. “But
I thought we played hard.
Both teams played hard. We
just needed to take care of
the ball better and play better
defense.”
It has been a tough start
to the season for the Eagles,
but Fotopoulos said he has
seen some bright spots.
“We have a lot of good
senior leadership,” he said.
“And our younger players
are learning. Right now,
we’re 1-7, because we’re
taking those lumps. But
we’re getting better each
game. It just stinks when
you lose like this.”
Meanwhile, for Andrew,
with so many young players
on the varsity this year, Matz
said every game is a learning
experience.
“Win or lose, if we walk
away from a game learning
something about our teammates
or the game, we’re
going to get better — if not
this year, then next year,” he
said. “But I think it is going
to be this year.”

Eagles start strong, but Andrew forces OT, steals the win
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
Sandburg’s Emily Lewandowski analyzes the court to look
for a play against Andrew.
One point was all she
needed.
With 10.1 seconds left
in overtime of a tight game
between Consolidated High
School District 230 rivals
Sandburg and Andrew on
Dec. 6, Thunderbolts freshman
guard Mia Signore
stood at the charity stripe,
looking to make a deposit
that would give her team a
two-possession lead.
That type of pressure can
be overwhelming for most
players, let alone an underclassman.
But Signore, who had tied
the game up on a 3-pointer
with 29 seconds left in the
fourth quarter, said she was
thinking just one thing.
“I was just thinking,
‘When I make these, it’s
over, and we’ll have beaten
our rivals,’” she said.
Signore drained the first
free throw, making it a fourpoint
lead and icing the
game for the T-Bolts (3-5),
who held on for the comefrom-behind
52-48 victory
in Orland Park. Signore finished
with a team-leading 21
points — 16 of which she
scored in the second half.
Andrew freshman forward
Isis Fitch chipped in
12 points (including 4 points
in overtime), while junior
guard Kayla Langowski
added 9 points on three
3-pointers.
For a team with three
freshmen and three sophomores
and just one senior,
the T-Bolts’ showed poise
down the stretch to come
back and win the game.
“Being young doesn’t stop
us from being our best, and
we don’t let our age get to
us,” Signore said. “We play
together and make it work.”
Signore was a big part of
that, particularly in the second
half. And with the game
on the line, she shined.
After a failed possession
by Sandburg late in
the fourth quarter, Signore
found herself with the ball
with roughly a half-minute
to play and her team down
three points.
“I was dribbling up the
court, and everyone was
guarded,” she said. “I made
a quick crossover, and I was
wide open. There wasn’t a
lot of time left, so I shot it.”
The basket was a nodoubter,
tying the game at
43, and the T-Bolts forced
the Eagles to have to take a
shot from the perimeter at
the buzzer, which missed.
Andrew coach Bobby
Matz said his team’s defense
in the second half really
made a big difference.
He also credited Signore’s
hot shooting for getting her
teammates open looks late
game against District 230 rival Andrew. Photos by Jon DePaolis/22nd Century Media
in the fourth, as well as in
overtime.
“Her strength with the
ball and her confidence going
places drew attention,
opening up other people,”
Matz said. “She made some
unselfish looks in transition,
too.”
But before the big comeback,
Andrew was looking
at the possibility of having
blown a first-quarter lead. After
starting on a 6-0 run, the
T-Bolts ended the first quarter
with a 13-9 lead, as Langowski
hit a 3-pointer and
Signore scored on a layup.
To start the second quarter,
Fitch bookended two
jump shots between a basket
the lead at 21-18 with approximately
half. Sandburg’s Grace Bauer
guard Natalie Stavropoulos
The SouthWest Suburban
Conference boys bowling
title will not be decided until
the conference meet.
Lincoln-Way West recently
made sure of that.
The Warriors celebrated
senior night by having everyone
roll consistent games
and went on to knock off
Sandburg 2,104-1,922 in a
SWSC matchup Thursday,
Dec. 8, at Laraway Lanes in
New Lenox.
With the big victory West
(6-3, 4-3) snapped a threematch
dual meet losing
streak and kept itself in the
mix for the league title. The
Eagles (8-2, 6-2) completed
their conference schedule
and fell out of first place in
the standings.
Lincoln-Way East (7-3,
6-1) defeated Bolingbrook
1,909-1,813 on Dec. 8 to
move into first all alone.
East was to face Lincoln-
Way Central (8-2, 5-2) on
Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Orland
Bowl in the final dual meet
for each team. Central defeated
Andrew 1,841-1,806
on Dec. 8, and a win in the
final SWSC match would
mean a three-way tie in the
regular season standings.
“It was one of those days where we
didn’t get any breaks, but we’ll be
back. We need to stay focused and
have everyone stay competitive.”
Cameron Crowe — Sandburg boys bowler, on losing
to Lincoln-Way West
Lockport Township (4-3
conference record through
Dec. 8) and West — the later
of which won the Red Division
of the SWSC in 2012-
2013 and 2013-2014 — remained
in contention.
But the dual meets only
count as a portion of the
league title, which is not
divided into divisions this
season. The SWSC meet is
scheduled to be held Jan. 7
at Laraway Lanes.
“If we bowl well, we will
have a shot at conference,”
West coach Scott Ullian
said. “That’s what we want.”
So does Sandburg, which
has never won a SWSC title.
“It’s going to come down
to a handful of teams: us,
Lockport and the Lincoln-
Ways,” said Sandburg coach
Jeff Kwilose, whose team
toppled Thornridge 2,178-
2,000 Dec. 6 at Orland Bowl.
“These [scores against West]
are a couple of our lowest
of the year. Our first game
score was our the lowest of
the year.
“We just didn’t show up.”
But the Warriors did on
senior night. Between the
first game, in which West
rolled a 1,054, and the second,
which the Warriors won
1,050-1,021, they honored
the six seniors in the program.
They are Nick Baber,
Owen Ettema, Matt Kovach,
Michael Pickering, Noah
Selof and Eric Ullian.
“I felt like we were all
good as a team,” Barber said.
“We all came out with happy
attitudes to start. In bowling,
it’s all about attitude, and I
definitely wanted to do well
on my senior night.”
Barber (188 and 224, for
412 total) was one of three
Warriors who knocked down
more than 400 on the day.
The others were sophomore
Mike Nork (222 and 237 for
459) and Eric Ullian (216
and 225 for 441). Junior Caleb
Kirby (207 and 192 for
399) and junior George Dennison
(221 and 172 for 393)
rounded out West’s scores.
Sophomore Cameron
Crowe (203 and 220 for
423) led Sandburg. Senior
Tommy Hayes (158 and 256
for 414), senior A.J. Svatos
(170 and 223 for 393),
senior Brandon Goeringer
(213 and 169 for 382) and
junior Alex Zylo (157 and
153 for 310) rounded out the
Eagle scores.
“It was one of those days
where we didn’t get any
breaks, but we’ll be back,”
Crowe said. “We need to
stay focused and have everyone
stay competitive.”
Crowe burst on the bowling
scene as a freshman last
season and helped the Eagles
to a sixth-place finish at
state. He placed 39th overall,
with a 218.2 average at the
state tournament.
He has done even better
this season, and rolled a
1,512 six-game series to win
the individual title and help
the Eagles capture the championship
of the Oak Forest
Invite Dec. 3 at Oak Forest
Bowl.
“He averaged a 252, with
every game being steady,”
Kwilose said of Crowe at
the Oak Forest Invite. “I’ve
never had a bowler do that.”
Crowe said he hopes to
continue his hot steak, in
helping Sandburg to another
state appearance.
“We’ve won both of our
tournaments so far,” said
Crowe, who also helped the
Eagles win the Oak Lawn
Invite Nov. 19. “We want
another state berth, and we
want another Top 10 finish.
We just need to practice and
make our spares. The strikes
will come; we need to make
the spares.”
Both teams have produced
individual state champions.
Joey Kopera won it for
Sandburg in 2012, and Josh
Glover did it for the Warriors
two years later.
West, however, has never
made it to state as a team.
It wants to change that this
season.
“We had three bad matches
in a row,” Scott Ullian said
of the Warriors’ three-match
losing streak, heading into
the Sandburg meet, which
included a 2,129-1,869 loss
at Lockport Dec. 6. “So we
had a team meeting and
righted the ship. Winning
conference would be great,
but we want to make it to
state.”
Barber agreed.
“Our goal is definitely to
make it to state as a team,” he
said. “We’re a strong tournament
team, and we can do do
well for six games.”
The Eagles and West were
both slated to be at the Lincoln-Way
East Invite this
past Saturday, Dec. 10, at
Orland Bowl. The two teams
also are to see each other
again Dec. 26 at the Titan
Invite, starting at 9 a.m., at
Centennial Lanes in Tinley
Park.
The Eagles are to start the
new year by participating in
the SWSC Conference meet
at 9 a.m. Jan. 7. That is to be
followed by duals with T.F.
North and Reavis.
more than us. We didn’t play good defense. During the whole
game, we had a tempo. But toward the fourth quarter, our
defense broke down.”
