Guthrie, 47, of 14828 Michigan Ave. in Dolton, was charged with felony retail theft and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after he allegedly tried to take seven jewelry items valued at $419.33 from a department store at Orland Square. He reportedly took the items off a rack, used a blade to remove the jewelry from its packaging, concealed the items in his jacket and tried to leave the store. Guthrie also had a glass pipe inside a glove inside a jacket pocket, police said. Nov. 17 • Andrea Jean Drain, 40, of 3722 S. Indiana Ave. in Chicago; William E. Owens, 35, of 15555 S. Walden Parkway in Chicago; and Jordan Key, 50, of 11031 King Drive in Chicago; each were charged with one count of theft/possession of stolen property after they reportedly were found to be in possession of various items stolen from Marshalls after an SUV was stopped in the 14500 block of John Humphrey Drive. Drain also was charged with possession of a narcotic instrument. The driver — Ashley N. Powers, 20, of 5721 Marshfield Ave. in Chicago — was charged with failure to signal, driving while license suspended and operation of an uninsured motor vehicle. Another occupant of the vehicle — Daron A. Lipscomb, 21, of 6023 Laflin Ave. in Chicago — was arrested on an active Will County warrant. Police reportedly were investigating a possible retail theft when they were led to a vehicle occupied by the five aforementioned people. Powers allegedly turned left from the center lane of Orland Square Drive onto John Humphrey Drive while being observed by police, and then changed lanes without using a turn signal. A bag containing Marshalls merchandise, some of it still with tags, was found on the floor between Owens and Key, police said. Police also reportedly found a purse on the floor containing items with Marshalls tags and some with security sensors still attached. A sock inside the vehicle contained several hypodermic syringes, a burnt spoon with white residue and a shoelace; police said. • Rasha Jamilanwar Alkurdi, 42, of 9050 Roberts Road in Hickory Hills, and Sali Mohamed Altarifi, 28, of the same address but a different unit number, were each charged with retail theft after they allegedly tried to take items from a department store at Orland Square. They had children with them and used the strollers to conceal the merchandise, police said. Alkurdi reportedly took three items valued at a total of $72.40. FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER A critter carol: Mokena music school supports local animal shelter As the snow gently fell outside the afternoon of Dec. 4, students of Mokena’s All About Music & Children’s Theatre embraced the spirit of the winter wonderland outside, performing a variety of holiday tunes for their friends and family at this year’s Caroling for Critters music recital. The event celebrated the holidays with music and puppies at the Christian Community Center at Saint John’s United Church of Christ in Mokena. The third official Caroling for Critters holiday recital hosted by All About Music this was the second year in a row that the event also benefitted Cache Creek Animal Rescue in New Lenox. “We’re big animal people,” said Todd Beebe, co-owner of All About Music with his wife, Connie Johnson. “We don’t have kids of our own, so our dogs are like our babies. … There’s so many dogs that need a home at shelters. So, it’s good to bring some attention to them.” Each year, All About Music presents its holiday recital as a benefit to an animal shelter. In addition to taking donations of pet care supplies, volunteers from Cache Creek were on site with three dogs available for adoption. “The reason we like Cache Creek is because they let you adopt today,” Beebe said. “We like the idea that people can leave with an animal today.” Cache Creek is a no-kill shelter for cats and dogs. All available animals have been spayed or neutered, microchipped and are up to date on their shots, according to Cache Creek volunteer Mary Jo Bonamino. FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT Village celebrates Nelson Road extension with ribbon cutting Hosting ribbon cuttings for road openings are uncommon, according to New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann, but he thought a ceremony for Nelson Road’s extension was necessary. The finished project is expected to be vital in benefiting vehicle traffic flow throughout town, which is why Baldermann and other Village officials came together Dec. 2 for a ribbon cutting upon its completion. “This is something we’ve told the community that we were going to do and wanted for decades, quite frankly,” Baldermann said. “This is something they’ve wanted for a long time because we have limited north-south travel.” The extension is to provide less congestion for the north-south roadways of Cedar Road and Gear Drive. It connects Nelson Road from Haven Avenue to Illinois Highway, which is approximately a mile strip. “It doesn’t seem like much, but it really is quite a bit,” Baldermann said. “It’s more about giving alternate routes for people to get north and south in town.” Construction for the roadway started early in the summer, after financing was approved in April. Baldermann said the extension “was more than just building a road.” Years of negotiations between the Village and property owners to acquire the land necessary kept the project from being done sooner. It also needed additional approvals because of a gas pipeline in the construction area. “I’m just really grateful to our staff that works so hard out there,” Baldermann said. “We worked with our firm and construction; everyone did a wonderful job getting this done and open on time. FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND Schilling dedicates buddy bench to late third-grader Tristan Grabner’s time on this earth may have been short, but his legacy will stand the test of time. On Dec. 2, a bright blue bench bearing the name of “Tristan’s Buddy Bench” was unveiled on the playground of Schilling School in honor of the third-grader who died overnight on Sept. 6. The bench is a testament to the 8-year-old’s larger-than-life personality, Schilling School principal Candis Gasa said. “We’ve been trying to do something that’s very personal to him and to who he was,” Gasa said. “We want to continue his spirit here, and we felt the Buddy Bench was perfect, considering who he was to the students and how visit us online at www.opprairie.com many lives he touched of the staff.” It was an emotional ceremony for Grabner’s parents, Nicole Bolda and Jim Grabner, who held Tristan’s 2-year-old sister Aubrey. Bolda fought back tears while unveiling the bench to the entire Schilling School student body. It is painted in a shade of Cubs’ blue for her son’s favorite team. The Schilling School students gasped with delight at their new playground fixture. It will serve as a place for them to go when they are in need of a buddy. “When you’re outside here at recess and you feel like you need a friend, come sit on the Buddy Bench,” Gasa said. “And those of you who see a friend sitting at the Buddy Bench, please join that friend.
