This is a list of varieties compiled by Café Imports:
There are the three relevant coffee species at the bottom of the branches, C. liberica to the left, C. arabica
in the middle and C. canephora (note that C. arabica is a natural hybrid of C. canephora and C.
eugenoides).
For Arabica, one branch compiles heriloom varieties (green, originated in Ethiopia), while another compiles
varieties derived from Typica (orange) and one from Bourbon (red). Bothe Typica and Bourbon originated in
Yemen. However, only a part of the circulating varietal names is compiled and there od no definitive list of
existing varieties available at the moment.
The Robusta branch (purple) to the right has the variety Hibrido de Timor (HdT, a natural hybrid of C.
arabica and C. canephora) at its bottom.
The clue about this picture is that it also visualizes the most important breeding results during the past
centuries. This is indicated by the branching pattern together with arrows. (e.g. Mundo Novo is a hybrid
between Typica from Sumatra and Red Bourbon or the cross of Maragogype and Pacas resulted in
Pacamara).
It also gives an overview on the existing Catimors, which are hybrids between HdT and Caturra. These
varieties are growing quickly as they are resistant to coffee leaf rust (CLR)and can therefore be cultivated
at lower altitude in CLR infested areas (e.g. Colombia coffee region in Huila grows mainly Colombia,
Castillo and Tiba only little Caturra).
