Turkey’s economy and
foreign trade functions
better and stronger!
As is known an unfortunate coup
attempt ignoring the national will, and
aiming at dragging the present and
future of the Turkish nation to darkness,
has been experienced on 15th
July 2016. Fortunately our nation
has responded the FETÖ terrorist
organization masqueraded as military
with the best way and proved its
commitment to democracy once again.
The will of our nation and respectful
cooperation of the state organizations
caused failure of the attempt of
FETÖ terrorist organization which
threatens our unity and future. July
15 has taken its respectful place in the
history as a day which announcing our
belief and our commitment to democracy
to the world.
Strong democracy is the guaranty of
strong economy and powerful Turkey.
Despite the unaccustomed developments
the maintenance of regular
economic parameters is the indication
of a well-established economy and
convenient and powerful country.
The Turkish economy which hosts
almost 40 thousand foreign investors,
increased its export volume by 400%
in the last 15 years and more than
tripled GNP raising it to 720 billion
dollars, has been growing uninterruptedly
for 26 quarters.
Attracting 150 billion dollar worth
of foreign capital in the last decade,
Turkey has been an attractive center
for new investments thanks to its in
centive and privatization policies. The
foreign investor who trusted Turkey
has never lost.
Achieving an historical solidarity and
common working culture between all
forces including the ruling party as
well as the opposition, our country is
closer today to its targets as positioning
among the top-ten economies of
the world.
With the normalization period our
government started in foreign policy
especially with Russia and Israel,
Turkey has been assuming the major
responsibility in political and economic
stability of our geography.
We, as the representatives of the
business world, have been advancing
to all of our targets with the common
belief we bear with more convenient
steps. In line with the export-oriented
development targets of our country
at this time when we have focused on
production and exports more, we, as
UTIB, have been entering an intensive
working tempo. Our international
fair activities will start with Shanghai
where Intertextile Home Textile will
open on August 24. Leading the way
for 22 Turkish exhibitors we will
realize a professional display at this
important event. We will address to
the Chinese and visitors coming from
varios countries of the world with our
quality and value added products and
we will establish new trade relations.

The interiors of the office were
designed with the purpose of
increasing motivation and also
generating a luminous and
transparent office space.

Adopting the motto ‘’Bringing
excitement and joy into the
office spaces”, Inteltek’s new
headquarters office integrates with
this understanding by generating
an exciting and joyful environment
for the employees. Bigg primarily
concerns designing a healthy and
happy office space for this project.
Inteltek’s new office is located in
Uniq Plaza, Istanbul. The interiors
of the office were designed with the
purpose of increasing motivation
and also generating a luminous and
transparent office space. The main
idea of the design is to “catch the
transparency” and “make the business
life enjoyable”.
Even though the requirement plan
was highly extensive, Bigg was still
able to accomplish this purpose
for benefiting from natural light as
much as possible. While an open
office system is built in the areas

near to the facade to enable a bright
office with the help of natural light;
entertainment spaces and meeting
rooms are located in the heart of the
plan. Alternative social spaces, e.g.
kitchenette, hot desk, library are built
in the core; it supports the teamwork,
communication and meeting different
needs of the employees is formed.
The transparency approach is based
on producing glass surfaces used in
the meeting rooms, where the access
to the light of the facade is benefitted
relatively less. Combining natural
and warm materials is one of the
characteristic features of Inteltek’s
design. Glass, natural stones, wood,
interior landscape items with the
rough effect of its gross look can
be shown as example of it. Also the
timber bridges, which are formed
in the layout with the intention to
integrate the meeting rooms with the
open offices and support the indoor
circulation, are highlighted as an
important element of the interior
design concept.
The prominent determinants to
develop the sense of aesthetics of
Inteltek Turkey Headquaters are
to prefer exposed ceiling, to display
electrical and mechanical installation
on the ceiling. Acoustical ceiling
mat blocks are integrated inside
the lighting units to minimize the
potential noise problem inside the
office which is planned as an open
office with many meeting rooms.

Counting down for
‘Design Turkey’!
Design Turkey Industrial Design Awards, which is held as the fifth time
this year will find its winners at Turkey Design Week.
Organized in cooperation
with Ministry of Economy, the
Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM)
and the Industrial Designers’
Society of Turkey (ETMK), as a
TURQUALITY® Program event,
“Design Turkey Industrial Design
Awards” is one of the greatest award
organizations in the innovation and
branding field. Design Turkey, being
supported by International Council
of Societies of Industrial Design
(ICSID), awards good design in
our country until 2008. Since the
first year it was held, having 1500
applications and approximately
300 products awarded in different
categories, Design Turkey Awards
features the only systematic evaluation
system in Turkey’s industrial design
field. By bringing the creative
designs that steer Turkish industry
forefront and enabling awarded
designs branding not only in Turkey,
but also in international fields,
Design Turkey Awards is held for
the fifth time this year. The award
ceremony will be conducted as part
of Turkey Design Week which will be
performed as the first time this year.

will enrich the organization with the
participation of worldwide known
designers, universities, design schools,
industrialists and academicians.
Award categories consists of 13
industries including packaging,
lighting, electronic products,
domestic appliances, home and office
equipment, public and commercial
products, furniture, sports, hobby,
game and personal products,
transportation and carrying devices,
building materials, investment
products and medical equipment.
Products applied for Design
Turkey are products produced with
industrial methods and introduced
into the market between January 1st,
2014 and June 30th, 2016; whose
designers, producers or brand owners
are Turkish citizens. In addition,
within the scope of “Design Turkey
Industrial Design Awards”, in order
to support creative ideas that can
point the way for the industry in the
future, the category of “Conceptual
Design Awards” in which the design
projects are evaluated that are not
included for production takes place.
This year, finalists which rank among
the top three in industrial designcontext
unity competitions are deemed
to apply to Design Turkey conceptual
design category directly and freely.
The products that pass the preselection
will be evaluated in 3
categories including “Good Design
Award”, “Outstanding Design
Award” and “Conceptual Design
Award” and on sectoral basis by an
international jury with more than
30 design authorities as every year.
Products will be evaluated based on
the criteria such as the innovation
they bring, the difference they
present, their responsiveness to user
needs, their functionality and the
aesthetic values they carry. Designs
awarded in the competition, which
will provide a great contribution
to Turkey’s branding with design,
will direct industrialists about the
features that a good design should
carry and also it will be an important
guide in the determination of the
right design strategies in the product
development process. Winner designs
will be promoted both in national
and international platforms through
exhibitions and publications.
The award ceremony will be
conducted between October 18-22,
2016, as part of “Turkey Design
Week” which will be performed as
the first time this year in cooperation
with the Ministry of Economy and
the Turkish Exporters Assembly
(TİM) . During Turkey Design
Week, panels, conferences and
workshops will be organized with the
participation of worldwide known
designers, universities, design schools,
industrialists and academicians in
industrial design, fashion design and
visual communication design fields.
The organization will be enriched
with the exhibitions and runway
shows of the product and projects by
the finalists of the design competitions
being held throughout the year.
Turkish designs, which are awarded
in the globally prestigious design
competitions, will also be part of the
event as well as national/international
project exhibitions of the design
centers and design offices. The event
that will bring together all partners
in the design field under the same
roof, will form an integrated design
ecosystem, by also including the
Ceremony and Exhibition of Design
Turkey Award.

May edition of Tissu Premier
was held in Lille, 25-26 May 2016.
21 companies from Turkey realized a
national participation level to the May
edition of the exhibition, organized
biannually in Lille in May and
November, for the eighth time.
The goal of Tissu Premier Première
Vision is to connect fashion players
in order to facilitate business
meetings and opportunities. All
exhibitors are selected by Première
Vision, guaranteeing they meet the
demanding requirements of the
textile sector in terms of know-how,
creativity, reliability, responsiveness
and flexibility.
The Tissu Premier fabric show also
provides a program of fashion and
market conferences. These free
conferences, presented by Première
Vision and trend consultants, present
the major fashion-season directions.
At the Tissu Premier Première Vision
show, the product offer is based
on new ideas and value for money.
Exhibitors are selected by Première
Vision for their capacity to adapt to
the fast pace of the market. They
work on two or three seasons at the
same time, on a just-in-time basis,

UTIB promoted Turkey’s
contract business
potential at FIA 2016,
Algeria
FIA 2016 Fair held for the
49th at Palais des Expositions from
28 May to 02 June 2016. 810 firms
including 405 foreign companies from
33 countries were represented in the
event that covers 52 thousand sqm.
Last year 76% of participants of 1,385
were domestic companies.
Companies from 28 countries
participated in the exhibition under
their national pavilions. They were
Japan, China, Iran, Pakistan, South
Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia,
South Africa, Senegal, Mali, Sudan,
Cuba, USA, Chili, Tunis, Egypt,
Palestine, Syria, Libya, Turkey,
France, Germany, Poland, Portugal,
Czech Republic and Italy.
Turkish pavilion was the largest
having more than 70 participating
companies on 2,397 sqm area. With
957 sqm space, Chinese pavilion was
the second largest.
UTIB, Uludag Textile Exporters
Association, had a 12sqm-info
booth in the event where Contract
Business magazine and catalogues
in French and English that are
covering products and companies
in marble and textile businesses
were distributed. Representatives of
UTIB also visited the booths of other
exhibitors personally and had talks
especially with their counterparts
from Egypt and Palestine with an
aim to organize joint events in other
locations.

curtains, curtain accessories, sun

The renovation of ING Bank Turkey Headquarters,
located in Maslak, a significant finance field of Istanbul,
has been designed by analyzing, exploring and thinking
outside the box, yet not interfere with institution’s working
structure. The project designed by Istanbul based
Bakırkure Architects, puts an example of how to make a
working space both efficient and joyful.

The renovation of ING Bank
Turkey Headquarters, designed by
Istanbul based Bakırkure Architects,
was started with a project workout
within the participation of current
employees. By getting their current
space experiences, it was aimed to
analyze their needs and expectations
to generate more dynamic and
ergonomic office atmosphere that also
meets their needs.
Workshop outcomes show that
majority of the participants is
not happy with the color scheme,
workstation placement and space
organization. Meeting room amounts
are not enough and not designed
efficiently. Besides, no common spaces
exist for socialization. Three out of
four participants need to be isolated
to concentrate on their work and %90
of them wants to switch spaces within
the working hours.
Three out of four participants are not
satisfied with the lighting; nine out
of ten people think air conditioning
is weak. Majority of the employees is
suffering from headaches, backaches
and as a result they feel tired.
Another spotted problem is about
hierarchy; in the face to face meetings,
according to people – including
executives- separated rooms, larger
desks that indicates ‘authority’ are just
waste of space. Instead they prefer
working altogether.

Outcome of these analyses formed the design
strategy of the project. Dynamic structure of the
institution is tried to be reflected to every part
of the building. In order to achieve the control
for general manager assistants and directors,
their places were located on the corners of the
floors. To enjoy daylight, workstations were
located beside the window edge. Rooms that
require daylight relatively less, like meeting
rooms, were located mostly in inner parts. By
protecting current core structure of the building,
supporting units and common spaces were
located around the core.
Benefitting from the opportunities of today’s
technology, mobile working corners were built.
These spaces were planned to provide alternative
working spaces for an alternative working
style. In understanding of mobile open office
organization that provides an alternative zone
to work in, standard workstations were shifted
to shared desks for collaborated working. By
reforming the space, the routine of working on
the very same chair and same desk is broke. The
“personal desks” were long gone and the only
thing left for employees is to choose where to
work with their laptops. This freedom sense also
motivates people and makes them work more
efficiently.
The term ‘’mobility’’ is not merely about a work
act in the new ING Bank Turkey HQ office
space. Yet it’s all across the building along with
a wireless data infrastructure. Why does one
need a fixed phone without having a desk? All of
the employees working at office communicates

through smart devices and wireless
networks which are accessible
internally.
To reach the maximum height of
the ceiling, that also chances the
perception of the space, exposed
ceiling is used instead of suspended
ceiling. The whole mechanical system
has solved in a mesh ceiling around
the core. Jet nozzle insufflation
technology is used for office spaces
and meeting rooms. By this way,
one of the problems mentioned in
workshop survey has been solved.
For the ING bank’s young and
dynamic staff, the design of the
office had to be innovatively. That’s
why colors and advertising works
were used surrounding the space,
‘feels like home comfort’ siting areas
and playfields were developed each
differing from flat to flat. The kitchen
is hold with a new understanding
and container cafes to grab and
drink something in were developed.
Phone booths for the private phone
calls and lockers used by each and
every employee to keep their personal
belongings and mails were added to
the space.
While managing the space, common
areas come into play with a significant
role in the whole building. For
instance, with ING bank Canteen,
people both meet their needs and find
a space to socialize by gathering.
Also the food court has become the
heart of the project by splitting it
up for multiple usages. These new
flexible functions enable to meet, read
and socialize with the help of social
stairs, winter garden, and basketball
court. Food court is converted into a
very active and useful space(s) instead
of using it only for one hour of the
whole day.

A modernist-influenced congress center
in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh by
Istanbul-based practice Tabanlioglu
Architects, has won “The Plan”
magazine’s award for future projects in
the Office and Business category.

PROFILE
The congress center will be
enveloped in a robust natural stone
façade, articulated with perforations
that allow light to diffuse inside, while
acting as solar shading. Respecting
site’s history and texture, the congress
center preserves essence of local values
in terms of material use, patterns,
colors and use of space. Project,
basically housing a main conference
hall, emerges from the inside out,
and becomes a sheltered place of
uniting international representations.
Strong in/our relation provided by
transparency, integrated spaces and
through inner gardens and patios.
Reference values of living culture and
vernacular tradition, grants building
ability to make the user think and
feel in local ambiance. The robust
looking structure enveloped by a
natural stone facade articulated with
perforations that allow diffused light
to fill interiors; endless geometric
patterns like mandala unifies the
shell. During different hours of day,
light shifts and plays across interior
spaces and gardens generating a
serene and natural environment, and
imbues a hue while granting natural
climate control system. Indentations
create gardens at upper levels and
form unique modules, so spaces
distinguished from outside. Dynamic
interior flow is initiated with the
landscaped inner patio/atrium on the
ground floor which is visible since
the entrance of the building which is
made through porticos, the middle
one being the sublime port that is also
a reference to striking local doors of
Morocco.
Mandala style geometric patterns will
generate an effect that references the
vernacular architecture of Marrakesh.
Internally, the building will include
a series of spaces on different levels,
internal patios and gardens that will be
a serene and natural environment.
The interplay of the inside and
outside will be a central theme for
the building, communicated through
such integrated gardens, as well as
with the sunlight piercing the façade
throughout the day. At ground level,
the atrium will be visible through
porticos and one central focus door
that will reference the striking local
doors in Morocco, emphasizing
a dynamic interior/exterior flow.

city in the country, after Casablanca,
Fes and Tangier. It is the capital
city of the mid-southwestern region
of Marrakesh-Asfi. Located to the
north of the foothills of the Atlas
Mountains, Marrakesh is located
southwest of Tangier, southwest of
the Moroccan capital of Rabat, and
south of Casablanca. Marrakesh is
one of Morocco's four former imperial
cities that were built by Moroccan
Berber empires. The region has been
inhabited by Berber farmers since
Neolithic times, but the actual city
was founded in 1062. Madrasas
(Islamic schools) and mosques built
under Andalusian influences in the
12th century. The red walls of the city
and various buildings constructed
in red sandstone during this period,
have given the city the nickname of
the "Red City" or "Ochre City". Like
many Moroccan cities, Marrakesh
comprises an old fortified city
packed with vendors and their stalls
(the medina), bordered by modern
neighborhoods.
Marrakesh grew rapidly and
established itself as a cultural,
religious, and trading center for the
Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa.
Today it is one of the busiest cities in
Africa and serves as a major economic
center and tourist destination.

UK architects and
designers react
to surprising
Brexit result
The UK's architects and
designers have been left reeling by
the results of recent referendum, in
which the country voted to leave the
European Union. The result was
split 52 percent in favor of leave,
and 48 percent remain and when the
result was a devastating reduction in
the value of the pound as stocks and
shares plummeted.
Following the result, many architects
and designers expressed concern
for the direct impact the uncertainty
over the next few years would affect
their business and employees.
Architects and designers including
Richard Rogers, Amanda Levete,
Ilse Crawford, Philippe Malouin and
Benjamin Hubert are among those to
have expressed their disappointment
with the outcome. "What a
nightmare," said Roger Hawkins,
co-founder of Hawkins Brown
architecture firm. "The lack of proper
debate in the referendum has been
alarming. It has generated the worst
in majority and the best in very few."
Expressing his dramatic
dissatisfaction, designer Benjamin
Hubert snottered, "I'm extremely
disappointed, both in what's going
to happen and the mentality of the
country we live in."
RIBA president Jane Duncan
The Royal Institute of British
Architects (RIBA) put out a
statement addressing the uncertainty
over withdrawal and seeking to
reassure the industry.
“In common with other UK
businesses and organizations, the
RIBA is assessing the short and
longer term effect of the withdrawal
on our members and the Institute
and we will provide further guidance
in due course,” said president Jane
Duncan.
“Most importantly, we will work
with colleagues in industry and
government to ensure that architects
have a strong voice in the coming
weeks, months and years.”
Other designers reacted with alarm.
“All those questions left hanging
by those leading the drive towards
leaving the EU will now have to be
answered,” the partners at Rogers
Stirk Harbour said in a statement.
“This result is not only significant
for our practice but especially for the
important proportion of our staff for
whom this is not only a signal of a
new, less open Britain but one that
may lead to real and practical changes
in their lives.”
But others adopted a more positive
view saying the level of political
engagement around the referendum
was positive.
“Of course I’m extremely
disappointed, but I have to respect
the majority decision,” said Amanda
Levete, architect and founder of
AL_A. “The debate has engaged the
nation, especially younger people, and
it can only be a positive to see people
talking passionately about the future.”

Overview’ report by JLL prepared
ahead of The Hotel Show Saudi
Arabia 2016 held in Jeddah, 17 – 19

supply of 8,600 rooms (Q1 2016) in
the city would double – with another
8,600 rooms forecast to be added to
the market by 2018.
With a total stock of 17,200 hotel
rooms estimated by 2018, major
projects in the Jeddah pipeline include:

Office consists of 11 floors, which
has an area of 12,500 sqm in total
at Maslakno/1 Plaza in Istanbul.
There’s a great amount of circulation
in the building along with the
integration of legal and corporate
foundation departments and
executives. While 8 of the normal
floors are operational, one floor is
dedicated to guests with the reception
and meeting-lounge facilities; also
the last floor is executive including
the company’s foundation and the
law firm. Alongside with the video/
conference rooms and large meeting
halls for potential workshops,
“Deloitte Learning Center” is located
at the first basement with an area of
2,000 square meters is spared solely
for educating purposes.
Today’s office approach must be
handled to increase efficiency and
communication between employees
considering their comfort and
happiness, and providing a feeling of
loyalty. Technology brings possibilities
which provide mobility, thus promote
to work and do business in different
forms and various spaces. Deloitte
Turkey Office is a reflection of such

In Deloitte office space, “personal
desks” are removed and the only thing

Social spaces in the former Deloitte
office were solely designed for a single
floor yet the new office space includes
“kitchenettes”, public sitting areas
and recreational spaces in one fifth
of the every floor. It’s even possible
to work in the winter garden or the
dining hall which was designed as
a classy cafeteria for the employees
who gets bored with their existing
floor. In this way, the segregation of
functionalities between departments
disappear and all departments execute
continuously in a proper manner for
an “information center”.

substructure is solved as wireless.
All of the employees working at
Maslakno/1 Plaza communicates
through smart devices and wireless

Vanelli, along with two other Turkish
brands, has managed to go inside

and quality. It has many awards
from European organizations for its
innovative and high-end fabrics.
Mr. Erol Turkun, Chairman of the
Board of Turkun Holding, to which
Dina Vanelli belongs, said that their

pride for our company as well as our

Altstadt Wien was
reanimated by the
new lines of famous
designer Atıl Kutoğlu
Having successful exhibits in several organizations in fashion weeks held
in many parts of the world such as New York and Paris famous fashion designer
Atıl Kutoğlu now is mentioned by its new project in a different field. The
signature of Atıl Kutoğlu will now be signed on Hotel Altstadt Wien, originally
designed by famous Italian Architect Matteo Thun two decades ago and
selected as the best hotel in Austria by Trip Advisor in 2015, will be rejuvenated
by Kutoglu. Atıl Kutoğlu mentioned about his works that go beyond the realm
of fashion including the exhibition spaces, boutique decoration of stores and his
works for car and building designs. He told about his life from his lycee years
to the shows in Paris and New York and gave advices for young designers.

Your works have been

Would you tell us about your
success story with your own
words?
While in the Istanbul German Lycee,
following my apprenticeship in Vakko
and Beymen, I wanted to study
business in Vienna. Even during my
education I have had actual cultural
shows in German Cultural Center
Teutonia. While in Austria, in an
Autumn day, I met with municipal
of Vienna on tram, who was there for
the press show of the opening a new
line. I run after them and I found
an opportunity to introduce myself
to Helmut Zilk, the famous and
prestigious municipal of Vienna. His
guards helped me for the talk.
This was a special memory for me.
That day was e milestone in my
career. A week later I got an invitation
from his office and went to meet
him, with all may drafts and files
under my arm. Vienna Municipality

has been the sponsor of my first
collection and show I held in Austria,
the Modeexposition Istanbul held
under the auspices of the Dean
of Vienna Economy University
where I was studying. Next year, I
made my second show, A Turkish
Flair, held in historical building of
Turkish consulate in Vienna under
the auspices of our Consul Erdem
Erner and his wife Gokçen. Following
the press reviews I started to design
for celebrities in Austria. Popular
music star and also the wife of Vienna
Mayor Helmut Zilk Dagmar Koller,
wife of foreign minister Edith Mock
and many other celebrities began to
prefer my designs and productions.
I was elected as the youngest best
fashion designer in the Munich
fashion week. As one of the six
successful young stylists chosen by
Austria Chamber of Trade, we were
sent to Dusseldorf, Milano and Paris
to make shows. My works have all
been preferred the most.
How did your story begin in
the US?
Once I pick my case and my latest
collection then I went to the USA.
The collection that I exhibited in a
suit of a famous hotel in New York
was immediately ordered by one of
the prestigious chain of stores and
was praised by fearful fashion editor
of New York Times, Bernadine
Morris at the same time. Besides he
published a half page news in New
York Times. During the following
ten years I have been living mostly in
New York, I shuffled between the US
and the Europe. I then was included
in Turquality program of Turkish
Ministry of Trade, and in their official
agenda as the only Turkish fashioner
in New York Fashion week. I held
exhibitions every year for 9 years.

Then were you back to
Turkey?
After having been chosen for several
times as the best fashioner of the
country in Austria, I was awarded by
the highest medal of merit of Austria
presented by the Austrian President
three years ago. I organized a show
in Paris Fashion Week last year. The
exhibit that were held in glorious
Turkish embassy was participated by
major fashion authorities and Belgian
pop star Viktor Lazlo, who has been
prefering my works for years.
We know that you reflect
your lines on dresses, bags,
and footwear. What kind of
a soul will Atıl Kutoğlu add
to hotel and other contract
projects?
That’s true. Collections for women
and men that we produce biannually
every year are our priority. Besides
other collections for bags, shoes,
shawls and scarfs, some encouraging
projects out of fashion field but in
design world may appear. I find
furniture and decoration fields close
to fashion and I like them as well.
A couple of years ago I have had
designed a sofa and coach for Dogtas,
a famous furniture brand. Now we got
a good offer from Austria, to design
new sections and suits of a famous
hotel in Austria. I always consider the
spaces that my works will be showed,
the decorations of boutiques that are
sold; even I had some drafts for cars
and buildings.
I think that the Altstadt
project is one of them. Would
you inform us about the
details of this project?
Hotel Altstadt Wien, originally
designed by famous Italian Architect
Matteo Thun two decade ago and
selected as the best hotel in Austria by
Trip Advisor in 2015. Owner of the
hotel had contacted me and demanded
to design new sections of the hotel.
I visited to the hotel, and I liked it
much. They even mentioned about
their dreams of having my lines, that
carries several elements from ethnic
Turkish culture. I drafted several suits
in this regard. 6 suits and a lounge
that connects them was designed by
myself. Meanwhile, UTIB, Uludag
Textile Exporters Association, entered
in the scene and offered to supply
home textiles of famous producers
in Bursa. Companies such as Rekor,
Turkun Holding, Vanelli, Guleser,
Elvin and Burkay Textile have
produces beautiful fabrics for my
designs. Actually, the cooperation
was made possible by the invitation
of Ibrahim Burkay, chairman of
UTIB and BTSO. We coordinated
all activities by visiting companies
with Pinar Tasdelen Engin, deputy
chairman of the association.

What were the most inspiring
elements of your design?
While working on a design, I have
been inspired, informed and feed
from several sources. But, Turkish
culture and art, Ottomans, Seljuks
and civilizations of Anatolia have
always been on the top of the list that
affects me the most. I got several
ideas and inspirations when I visited
a museum or a historical city. But,
modern art also affects me, like any
film or opera I was an audience. All
of the mélange of these help me to
develop style, collection and designs.
But, at the last resort, I aim to
produce contemporary, original but
practical and comfortable collections.
I have a style and signature reflects
both modern and ethnic. Fashion
authorities are commenting on my
work in these words. I consider
that out of life and overemphasized
designs are not so valid now.
What can be said about the
design quality in Turkey from
your point of view? How is
our position when compared
with other countries?
There are promising developments in
the field of design in Turkey. Many
branches of design are taught in
several universities and in academies
such as Istanbul Fashion Academy.
However, still we have a few
number of names, who are famous
in international platforms. We have
to be in better and more effective
position in international arena by
reflecting the cultural and historical
richness of Turkey. The popularity
of these topics, the value of design,
supports and incentives offered for
the developments in the field are good
points.
What are your advices
for candidates of younger
designers?
I advice them to be self-confident, try
to develop themselves and to think
globally. They should have specific
targets not only on local but also for
international arenas. They have to be
original, be themselves, be up-to-date
and more realistic.
What else do you want to
add?
I want to say that fashion and textile
industries are important fields that
has enormous potentials in the
promotion of Turkey and its values.
With their successful fashion designs,
fashion people, designers, brands are
promoting their products and works
to masses in foreign countries. When
I made an interview to an Austrian
or other foreign TV channel, I also
made contributions to the promotional
efforts of Turkey in the world, with all
my words, collections, shows, person,
and with my ideas.

in textile technologies we have been
serving as a solution partner to
companies who have hotel, hospital
and office projects demanding high
security and high hygienic standards.
We also launch unique collections
depending on our experience in textile
industry for the attention of contract
businesses. We have special products
such as fabrics having 100 % solar
protection, flame resistant tulles, etc.
Where are your products
used in these projects? Will
you mention about a specific
project that your products
were used?
Since our products have world class
standards tested by international
laboratories, they all can be used in all
projects of international hotel chains.
I cannot mention about their names,
because the rules of contracts made
with clients prohibit disclosing, two
of the projects is on the way one in

Istanbul and the other in Dubai are
about to be completed. Presently, we
are supplying fabrics for a new hotel
project in Dubai.
What is your opinion about
the future of contract sector
in Turkey?
Turkey has long been a major
production and research and
development center for home textile
industry in the world. So, contract
market is a part of it. Having a
dependable organization that is able to
supply products as required. It needs
to have experience and concentration
for the companies to be successful.
Number of successful companies are
increasing and improving their names
and brands in international arena as
well.
Continuing its successes in the contract area
as well as in the textile industry, Kırayteks
achieves important projects especially in the
Middle East.
Can I have your final
remarks?
Depending on the negative effects of
the crisis experienced with Russia we
dominated on the foreign markets.
Our promotional investments and the
reference of our successful projects
led us to be positioned as a sought
after name in the contract market.
We hope that we can get the speed of
domestic hotel projects as we had a
few years ago.

Multidisciplinary
architecture and brand
development agency GeoID is
responsible for bringing to life
Turkey's first and only "Grand
Boutique Resort", the Maxx
Royal Kemer Resort. Located
on the beaches on Antalya
at the foothills of the Taurus
Mountaines, the resort’s unique
design concept was strongly
influenced by the four elements
of the universe.
GeoID used this source of
inspiration to create a group
of 24 motifs exclusively for
the project. In hues of Azure,
Bronze, Emerald and Tangerine,
these inspirational designs signify
– respectively – Water, Earth,
Air and Fire. These patterns
can be seen repeated throughout
the hotel in diverse forms, from
wallpaper to bed sheets, in
staff uniforms and restaurant
menus, and are symbolic of the
fundamental components of the
cosmos.

started for the establishment of
excellence center for textile and
technic textiles, advanced composite
excellence center and the biggest
center for vocational certification and
tests in the country.
Ibrahim Burkay, chairman of Bursa
Chamber of Commerce and Industry
pointed out that the textile excellence
center for technical textiles on 13
thousand sqm area will take the
lead for the sustainable growth of
the textile industry in the province.
He said, “The business people in
Bursa have to focus on higher value
added products instead of standard
and regular products if we want to
improve our position in international
arena. The center will play a vital
role in the production of high value
products and in the development of
new technologies.
Research and development activities
are important for improving the

Stella Maris in Spain to its list of

Stella Maris Hotel, situated on
the island of Ibiza, one of the most

Spain, Corendon introduced for the
first time the “all inclusive” concept
in Spain.

have opened our own hotel”
Yildiray Karaer, co-founder of the
Corendon Tourism Group, declared
that with this new investment
Corendon intends to open one of
the world`s most expensive tourism
destinations to a wider public. To
introduce the “all inclusive” system
to the chefs de cuisine of the Marble
Stella Maris hotel, five chefs from
hotels in Turkey came over to Ibiza
to train them. “In the Turkish and
Dutch markets there has always been
a lot of interest for holidays in Ibiza,
but we could not find a hotel that
could offer our concept. To meet this
demand we now have opened our

high quality from us for a reasonable

inclusive” system. We have added
some small changes to this system and
on our guest`s request we are able to

After Marble Stella Maris Hotel

Multi-billion Sea City in
Kuwait to be completed
in 25 years
Sabah Al Ahmad Sea City is regarded as a pioneering project in the region as one
of the major projects of the future. It is a residential landscape which embraces
the sea throughout the integrated development of residential, commercial, retail
and community facilities.
A multi-billion dollar city is
being built in Kuwait, close to Saudi
Arabian borders with the sea, and is
set to become a metropolis of 250,000
people.
Sabah Al Ahmad Sea City, which
will spread across an area the size
of Manhattan, is named Sabah Al
Ahmad, the 86-year-old emir of
Kuwait who came to power in 2006.
The project was inspired by the
late Khalid Yousef Al Marzouq, a
wealthy Kuwaiti property developer
who funded it entirely through his
La'ala company. It is now brought
to fruition by his son Fawaz Al
Marzouq with a select team of design
engineers, construction managers
and contractors. The whole project
involves around 2,500 workers from
20 countries. Millions of tons of
sand was moved by 29 bulldozers,
70 excavators and 113 giant dump
trucks. The sand was used to build
up the city so it could cope with
rising sea levels no matter how dire
the global warming predictions. Soil
experts are on hand to help nurture
new mangrove seeds so they can
withstand high water salinity. The city

will be supplied with desalinated water
from 17 iconic concrete water towers.
Marzouq said: “We have master
planned this project so that it works
with the nature, we have embraced its
requirements and it has paid off, with
a thriving marine eco-system.”
Development will take place in
10 phases, and over 25 years. Sea
City, engineered by British experts,
is under construction with huge
channels already been dug.
Ian Williams, La’ala’s project director,
said that he could not give a cost for
the whole project, but said it was
“multi-billion dollar” project. “With
the traffic congestion in the city,
people will be attracted to make Sabah
Al Ahmad Sea City their primary
residence,” Williams said. “We
have not tried to construct a dream
around an iconic shape or symbol, as
elsewhere in the region, we have used
sound engineering and science to
deliver a urban development that will
stand the test of time.”
One of the most extraordinary
elements of the project is the way the
sea has been brought almost six miles
(9km) inland from the Persian Gulf.

A new project of Mine Sayin for Alacati:
Insula Alacati Boutique Hotel
W e design concepts. Our
first job is to produce new ideas for
bringing soul and identity to the
spaces we designed,” says Sayin who
reflects their efforts to their new job
with her team. The project consists of
a hotel of six rooms and a restaurant
that focused on new tastes. The space
is designed with a synergy among
the team, the landlords and design
process. All rooms speak the language
of concepts of the lives, clean, neat
and the comfort.
Different colors, odors and styles
are used as the reflections of variety
of combinations. The design office
of Sayin distinguishes itself by
adapting inner spaces to the Aegean
architecture. Insula Alacati, is a
revived form of a stone mansion
enriched with both old and new
furniture. Stone walls are covered
with paste of village, floor and ceilings
have the warm of wood. Green is the
main color used was inspired from
the leaves of fig tree in the garden
restaurant.

Alacati, a famous
holiday resort for her
last work, Insula
Boutique Hotel.
Stoves of china and pig iron are ready
to produce a distinguished feeling in
winter. Fixtures are of British style,
tiles are designed to the color of the
rooms. Copper is seen on the small
details are one of the warmest and
chick materials used in the hotel.
Architect Mine Sayin says, “We
started with the theme of warm and
unity in hotel’s restaurant. We aimed
to design a welcoming sense to the
visitors who may taste different dishes
among the people. At the end of short
corridor comes a traditional kitchen
where everyone of the guests may
keep an eye on the preparation of the
cuisine.”
A wooden entrance door and two
windows are seen on the façade that
connects the outside and the closed
garden. Space draws its line of limits
without cutting it from its environ.
Guests may watch the arms of fig
tree and the blue sky while sitting at

The W Istanbul Hotel
by geoID
The original design of
the hotel was inspired
by Ottoman culture,

perpetuate this concept

single detail used is a
modern interpretation

Located in the historic
center of Akaretler, a properspous
neighborhood filled with chic
hot spots, cafes and art galleries
in Istanbul, multidisciplinary
architectural and brand development
agency, GeoID, were responsible
for the recent redesign of the city’s
W Hotel. Every material used in
the hotel was custom designed and
manufactured by GeoID.
With a total of 140 guestrooms and
suites, the W Istanbul Hotel offers
both luxury and history, tying together
a rich and trendy atmosphere and
accentuating Ottoman motives, still
remaining harmonious with the W
Hotel brand identity.
Directed by co-founder Tuğçe Rizeli,
who trained as an architect in Istanbul
and Milan, Rizeli’s artistic vision
fuels the development of the design
studio’s creative projects.
GeoID, in collaboration with
legendary French lighting designer
Thierry Dreyfus, created a striking
and unique lighting installation to
illuminate the tunnel at the entrance
of the hotel, the design of which
emulates a jewelry box. This tunnel
adds an astonishing lightness and
coolness that suits the image of W
Hotel’s design-led lifestyle hotel
experience.

artificial islands close
to Istanbul.
Located at the crossroads of
Europe and Asia, Istanbul has long
been an amalgam of cultures and
a record of civilizations past and
present. Today, Istanbul is undergoing
a dramatic transformation.
Expanding democracy, global
investment, and abundant tourism are
reshaping the region for generations
to come. The Pearl of Istanbul is
at the heart of this transformation.
Envisioned by Turkey’s business
and civic leaders, and designed by
the urban planning and architectural
design team at Forum Studio, the
Pearl marks Istanbul’s rebirth as a
global destination.
Situated in a natural bluff just outside
of the bustling city center of Istanbul,
the Pearl takes full advantage of its
connection to the Marmara Sea, the
natural beauty of the site’s topography
contributing to the region’s reputation
as a cosmopolitan resort.
The centerpiece of the development
is a marina, comprised of a string
of manmade islands. The islands
are conceived as an alternative to a
utilitarian seawall; they harmonize
with, and extend, the region's
natural landscape. Changes in scale

central "pearlescent" node, the Pearl's
islands form a calm harbor with more

terminals for cruise ships. In the inner

for future flexibility.
The Pearl is no less ambitious on
land. Sculptural towers rise along the
shore, alternating with landscaped
terraces that cascade towards the
water, mimicking natural plateaus of
the region. The buildings' massing is
designed to capture spectacular views
of the marina -- as lively at night as
it is during the day -- and the sea
beyond it. Luxury accommodations
will position the Pearl as a second
home to the world's elite. But plentiful
hotel rooms and accessibly priced
apartments will ensure that the Pearl
remains approachable to a broad
public. The towers' base will house
retail and restaurants. Wrapping
around the other side of the towers'
base, the development will present a
welcoming facade to the surrounding
community, with street-level retail,
services, and traditional cafes that are
the region's hallmark.

Normalization of Turkey’s relations
with Russia will contribute to the
exports of Turkish construction
sector positively

sector targeted to total
700 million dollars

relations with Russia have been
undergoing a normalization period.
Within this framework, the foreign
trade volume between the two
countries is expected to increase
considerably.

The Congo Kintele
Congress Centre project,
which is located in the
Kintele Region of Congo’s
capital city Brazzaville as
one of the two significant
designs currently under
construction in Africa by
Avcı Architects whose
business volume comprises
international architectural
projects to 80%, is planned
to be opened for service
towards end of August.
The Kintele Congress Center
– a project that embodies several
complementary functions in addition
to a resort hotel accomplished with
the support of Turk Eximbank,
which operates under the control of
Ministry of Economy – is intended
to also host summits of the African
Union at which country presidents
will participate.
The current works undertaken by
Avcı Architects abroad include a
Ministerial Campus simultaneously
ongoing in Brazzaville, a mass
housing project in Baku, and a city
planning scheme at Saudi Arabia’s
petrol city of Al Khobar. The Congo
Kintele Congress Centre, which
is currently under construction
in the Kintele Region of Congo’s
capital city Brazzaville as one of the
numerous international projects that
make up 80% of the business volume
of Avcı Architects, a company that
carries out its activities under the
leadership of Architect Selçuk Avcı
who is acknowledged to be one of
the most significant representatives
of sustainable architecture in Turkey,
is planned to be opened for service
towards end of August. The Congo
Kintele Congress Center, as one of
the two projects designed by Avcı
Architects in Congo’s capital city
Brazzaville along with a Ministerial
Campus under simultaneous
construction, embodies several
complementary functions in addition
to a resort hotel.

The congress center being constructed
to host summits of the African Union is
designed in complete harmony with the
geographical, climatic and cultural context
it is located in to satisfy the sustainability
criteria which Avcı Architects takes as the
most important starting point in all of its
projects. Located in a newly developing
area of Brazzaville, to the north of the
new Olympic Centre, the site of the Congo
Kintele Congress Center has panaromic
views of the Congo River to the south and
a forested unbuilt landscape to the north.
The topography of the site is a valley carved
out by the great Congo River which creates
an island M’Bamaou in the foreground and
the buildings sit parallel to the contours of
this valley falling towards the river

350 meter long colonnade
to interconnect all building
units…
The positioning of the buildings on
the site is largely dictated by the site’s
topography, while Avcı Architects
developed a design where the 1500
seat Congress Hall, the 300 person
Presidential Hall, the 1000 seat
Banquet Hall and the 1000 person
Public Piazza are placed in a line
sequence interrupted by courtyards,
and all reached by a public sheltered
collonade that links these elements.
The Hotel on the other hand is
positioned 5 meters above this
general public promenade, largely
to give it better views to the river,
while making a public / private
segragation of functions on the site.
All but two courtyards linking the
enclosed volumes are accessible to the
public, and allow to form landscaped
intermissions amongst the large
masses of these functions. Thus the
form of the Congo Kintele Congress
Center settles in to the landscape,
avoiding the appearance of an out
of scale overbearing large mass of
buildings while providing views of the
Congo River from all hotel rooms.
The 350 meter long collonade
also acts as a linear public space
in itself sheltering people from the
ever present rain that prevails most
of the year around in this part of
the world. The two ends of the
Collonade also act as public gates to
the whole complex. Attached to this
public collonade are the Press Hall
to the Western gate and Museum
to the Eastern gate. At this end the
Museum forms the southern edge of
the Piazza, while the shops and the
Public Restaurant form the Northern
and Eastern edges of the Piazza. This
open space is also sheltered from the
rain with a square occulus that allows
the rain to fall in to a shallow pool at
its centre.
A shelter from the ever
present rain…
Avcı Architects created special
configurations for the rain which is
an everpresent climate phenomenon
in Congo for at least 6 months
of the year and defines the way
people interact in public and with
public space. Therefore great effort
was made in this sense to shelter
people while out in the open but to
not distance from nature, and the
presence of rain because while it
is raining it is still very warm and
ofcourse humid. There fore while it is
important to shelter from rain it is also
important to allow air to flow and cool
such sheltered spaces. The presence
of water is celebrated by making its
fall from roofs visible and audible as it
reaches the earth and fills open pools
which take overflow from large roof
areas using gargoyles and water falls.
Avcı Architects took efficient
measures also against another aspect

of the local tropical climate, namely
the constant presence of a high level of
humidity which makes use of natural
ventilation as a way of minimising
energy consumption difficult and
the use of airconditioning of public
spaces essential for comfort conditions
to be achieved to acceptable comfort
standards. The main objective in
this case was to minimise the cooling
loads by reducing the incidence of
sunlight on exposed glass facades.
Thus glazing is always deeply set in
to the façade on the north (in this case
it is actually the true north façade
which receives the midday sun due
to the location of the Congo Kintele
Congress Center below the equator)
and low sunlight from the east and
west is minimised by vertical shading
elements and perforated metal
screens.
Natural Materials, Cultural &
Local Details...
The use of materials in the Congo
Kintele Congress Center were
to a large extent dictated by the
requirement of speed of construction,
and availability of modern
construction and cladding materials.
Thus although it would be more
cost effective, concrete frame was
ruled out in favour of steel and more
easily transportable lighter cladding
materials such as aluminium panelling
for massive cladding elements such
as block or brick work. Beyond that,
efforts were made to use natural
materials at all times such as timber,
and stone.
The larger elements are signified
by a series of perforated cladding
elements which are laser cut in
geometric Congolese patterns derived
from the traditions of the larger
region, connecting the buildings to
their place. At times these patterns
find themselves recalled in interior
elements such as floor patterns and
screens which divide interior spaces,
and at times on external wall elements
creating shading or privacy between
inside and outside. Vertical shading
elements are a lighter coloured bronz/
brass finish, set against a background
of larger darker coloured panels and
of course glass. The overall colour
palatte of the project is infact derived
from a series of lighter and darker
shades of bronz and brass.
The 200 bedroom Kintele Resort
Hotel also acts as an adjunct to the
Kintele Congress Centre, providing
both facilities for some of the
presidential guests, with 6 presidential
suites and their entourage, with a
series of suites and standard rooms.
On the ground floor are the spa,
restaurant, bars and the pool all of
which stand 5 metres above the level
of the Kintele Congress Centre,
providing panoramic views across the
Congo Valley.

Who is Selcuk Avcı?
Born in 1961, Selçuk Avcı is the
founder of Avcı Architects, which
has offices in London and Istanbul,
and founding partner of Urbanista
Real Estate Consultancy Co. The
first company privately owned by
him was established in the year of
1989 in London, with the name of
Avcı Jurca Architects which later on
was turned into a multidisciplinary
design-leading studio with offices
in London, Istanbul, Budapest
and Belgrade. Having gained vast
personal experience in the design and
management of wide-ranging programs
related to housing industry, business
sector, offices, retail, arts, sports,
airport design, health services and
higher education institutions, Avcı put
his signature to many projects driven
by an architectural understanding that
gives particular importance to ecologic
design and energy saving.
Avcı has thought architecture lessons at
Architectural Association of London,
at TU of Delft and at Fakulteta za
Arhitekturo of Ljubljana. He directed
a studio at Architecture Department
of Bilgi University in Istanbul and
thought studio lessons at Istanbul
Technical University. Currently, from
time to time, he gives workshop lessons
and conferences on ecological design.
With the projects it managed and with
his compositions executed, he has won
numerous national and international
prizes. His works have been published
in several journals. The most notable
one among these publications is that
his company, Avcı (Jurca) Architects,
was listed in “England’s Most
Promising 50 Companies Guide”.
In the year 1989, Avcı won his first
grand prize as design director in the
European Union Energy Saving
Architecture competition. In 1998,
he won the RIBA Regional Award
with the projects he completed
during his position as design director
at Energy Conscious Design
Architects in London. The Turkish
Contractors Union Building in Ankara
conceptualized by Avcı was awarded
as the “Best International Project” by
Building Magazine in London. The
same project was elected as the “Best
Architectural Project” at Sign of the
City Awards in 2014. The Turkish
Contractors Union Building also won
the “Construction Award” at 11th
Architecture Awards organized by
the Turkish Association of Architects
in Private Practice. Later on, with its
sustainability properties, the project
qualified to receive LEED Platinum
Certification.
