MONGOLIA
The MIAT
Mongolian Airlines
headquarters at the
airport is fronted by
an Antonov An-2,
MONGOL-258.
Hunnu Air’s pair
of Airbus A319-112s,
including JU-8888
(c/n 1706), have
been returned to
the lessor, meaning
the airline has had
to reduce its route
network.
Historic
Mongolian leaders
are exhibited on
the terminal wall,
reflecting the
importance they
still have in the
country today.
at the same time.
Arriving passengers use the lower level
of the terminal and, after picking up their
bags and clearing customs and immigration,
proceed outside where buses and taxis
await. The only way into the city is by
car or bus. Depending on traffic (which
can be quite congested), the trip can take
anywhere between 30 and 90 minutes.
Airlines
State-owned carrier MIAT Mongolian
Airlines dominates at ULN and connects
Ulaanbaatar to various Asian hubs –
including Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo and Hong
Kong – with its fleet of Boeing 737-800s and
767-300s. An Antonov An-2 sits in front of
its head office, just across the street from
the terminal.
Late last year the carrier launched a new,
twice-weekly link to Singapore/Changi via
Beijing. It has also served Berlin for many
years, usually via Moscow/Sheremetyevo,
catering to the demand of the many
Mongolians living in both cities as well as
increasing numbers of German tourists.
MIAT also runs a seasonal summer route to
Frankfurt, flown non-stop by a 767-300 twice
a week. The route has been a significant
addition as Frankfurt is one of Europe’s
largest hubs, offering onward connections
around the world. The carrier also runs
charter flights to destinations in Japan, such
as Shizuoka and Tokyo/Haneda, Pyongyang
in North Korea, the South Korean island of
Jeju, Vietnam and Myanmar.
International carriers at ULN include
Air China, with a daily flight from Beijing;
Aeroflot, daily from Moscow; Korean Air,
six times a week from Seoul; and Turkish
Airlines, three times a week from Istanbul
(since 2012) with an intermediate stop in
68 airports of the world
