Yogurt is the official NY State Snake. Governor
Thanksgiving is a time for mingling
with family, catching up with old
friends, and posing for pictures. But
most of all, Thanksgiving is a time
for eating — and you'd be hardpressed
to find anyone who
disagrees with that. But since you'll
be getting your fill around lots of
other people, we know you'll want
The term "food porn" refers to images of food
across various social media platforms such as
TV, cooking magazine, online blog, website
and social media platforms. The reason why
food porn is strongly connecting with popular
culture is due to the fact that people are
exposed to food in their everyday
lives. [11] Food porn is not specific to social
media platforms and could also be part of the
category on newspaper and online blog.
Moreover, food porn is experienced globally.
Language barriers that exist culturally can be
2

CONNECTIONS ISSUE 19
Myconnectionsmagazine.com
bypassed by the usage of #foodporn. Food
porn is used collectively by the online users
and is does not exclude or privilege one food
over another.
It is important to realize that the term food
porn does not strictly deal with the connection,
often established throughout history, between
food items and sexual contents. In the United
States, food porn is a term applied when "food
manufacturers are capitalising on a backlash
against low-calorie and diet foods by
marketing treats that boast a high fat content
and good artery-clogging potential". [3] The
origin of the term was attributed to the Center
for Science in the Public Interest [3] which
began publishing a regular column called
"Right Stuff vs. Food Porn" for its Nutrition
Action Healthletter in January 1998. [6][7]
In the United Kingdom, the term became
popular in the 1990s due to the TV cookery
programme Two Fat Ladies after the shows
producer described the "pornographic joy" the
pair of them took in using vast quantities of
butter and cream. [8]
Taking a picture of food became one of the
norms for younger generation in the world.
Study from YPulse shows 63% of people
between thirteen years old to thirty two years
old posted their food picture while they are
eating on social networking services.
Moreover, 57% of people in the same age
range posted information of the food they
were eating at that time. [9] From the
percentage, food and social media are starting
to connect together as trend. People using the
hashtag #foodporn helps the food industry to
track audiences on social networking services.
Uses/community
The term food porn has shifted throughout its
first appearances. Articles mentioned food
porn as early as the late 1970s. The phrase
food porn was used in a literal manner,
describing food that was unhealthy for human
consumption, directly comparing it to
pornography. Its use then took on a new
meaning, being used to describe food that
was presented and prepared in a manner that
was aesthetically appealing. [10] It took on this
use for over a decade, until the social media
boom that was created by the internet. Once
the early 2000s hit, the terminology evolved
into a way of documenting meals that are
recognized for their presentation. This desire
for food has flooded the internet, having
significant effects on social media sites that
provide the ability to display such
as Instagram, Flickr, Snapchat, Facebook,
and Twitter. The popularity of displaying food
in a physically appealing manner is driven by
the users that create these communities. The
use of hashtags that the users of these sites
have adapted to, allow food porn to connect
people in a way that documents anything
about the food such as, foods that reflect
cultures, calories, presentation, preparation,
delicious taste, and anything else that adds to
the authenticity of the meal.
Lost Royalty French
Showers A Myth!!!
A Mystery……
According to French Daily “Le
Figaro” 43% of French people
don’t shower every day
The remaining eight per cent only
clean every four days. Ewww.
The average French person
spends nine minutes in the shower
when they actually get round to
taking one.
Virginia Mallet, head of hygiene
company Initial France told French
daily Le Figaro: ‘In France, we
have a hard time admitting that
poor hygiene is a factor linked to
illness.
‘The simple act of washing one’s
hands after going to the toilet is
automatic in some countries, but
in France we have always
underestimated this act.’
This figure disgusts us all
It turns out that an alarming
amount of French people don’t
shower every day *crinkles nose in
disgust*.
More than 40 per cent don’t
regularly clean themselves,
according to a new poll of French
people’s habits.
A further 24 per cent said they
shower once every two days,
and 11 per cent said they
showered once every three days.
death per day for every 10,000 people.
Last year, at least 3,500 refugees died
in the Mediterranean while 219,000
made it to Europe. That's a mortality
rate of around 10 per day, or one in 63.
At least 700 migrants died in the
Trying to escape civil unrest …
The World's Deadliest
They calculate the need for help based
on mortality rates -- a cold, precise
measurement. An emergency situation
is considered acute when there is one
MSF, until now a land-based operation,
has decided to set sail. Never has the
organization's name been more fitting
than right now, as it carries out its
mission in a vast sea that has
developed into the world's deadliest
border.
Three boats have been in action since
early summer. The Dignity 1,
the Bourbon Argos and MY Phoenix,
the smallest of the fleet. Together they
have room for 1,400 refugees. It is the
only real private rescue mission in the
Mediterranean, and it is almost
entirely funded by donations.
Operating costs have already topped
€10 million this year. Of that, Phoenix,
jointly funded by MOAS, has cost €1.6
million thus far this year. MSF has
rescued more than 10,000 people so
far. By mid-2015, the mortality rate in
the Mediterranean was one in 76. A
small victory, but a victory
nonetheless.
An estimated 15 to 20 boats carrying
around 3,000 people set sail from
Libya's beaches every day. After a few
hours, they call a contact person in
Italy or they get in touch with the
Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre
(MRCC) in Rome directly. That's if a
navy vessel or a cargo ship doesn't
stumble across them first. Whoever is
close by is obligated to come to the
rescue. But what if no one is nearby to
save them?
Such was the case on Wednesday last
week when a fishing boat sank off the
coast of Libya with 600, maybe 700
people on board. They were moments
away from being rescued by an Irish
naval ship when the refugees all
pushed to one side of the boat. As they
tried to get closer to their saviors, the
boat capsized. Only 373 people
survived. Everyone who had been
below deck when the boat sank was
dragged to the depths of the sea. The
three MSF boats were there too, but
not to save lives. They were there to
recover bodies.
darkened cabin, three employees of
the Austrian firm Schiebel are sitting in
front of their monitors steering a
drone. It offers the first sign of the
boat.
A bright fleck in a sea of blue.
It looks stable. Judging by its size, it's
bigger than a dinghy, and it sits low in
the water. The fleck is also moving.
That's a good sign. It means the boat is
still operable. But it is moving slowly
and going in curves rather than a
straight line. Maybe it is already taking
on water, or maybe the man at the
helm has lost his bearings.
Those on board the boat will later
explain that they left at 3 a.m. Anyone
who complained about the tight
quarters was summarily beaten by the
smugglers. Some had their money and
jewelery confiscated as they
embarked. Some paid only $500 for
the journey, others $2,000. It didn't
take long for the helmsman to
abscond. Before he left, he told the
others to head toward a light in the
distance. So they did, without realizing
that it was a flame from the Bouri oil
platform that shone over the sea like a
lighthouse. They thought the light was
But now, the Phoenix is on its next
mission. It's 11:30 a.m. and in a
1) Be amazed by
La Sagrada Família
Amazing Barcelona
La
Sagrada Família is, without question,
the most detailed, unique and awesome
church I’ve ever seen. Beginning in
1852, it was designed by Catalan
architect Antoni Gaudí. The most
fascinating thing about this church is the
fact that it is STILL incomplete (the
anticipated completion date is
9

2026). Words cannot describe the
incredible detail both outside and inside
this church. I literally stared and stared
at it until my eyes were hurting. It’s a
little pricey for a ticket to see inside, but
its 100% worth it. If you want to skip the
long line, then make sure to buy your
ticket online in advance. La Sagrada
Família is absolutely a MUST see while
you are in Barcelona! Buy your online
tickets and learn more about La
Sagrada Família here!
2) Chill out in Park
Güell
located a bit out of the city, so plan
ahead and give yourself at least 3-4
hours to explore the area. It’s a perfect
place to relax and to escape the buzz of
the city. This website has everything
you need to know about Park Güell!
3) Hang out on the
beautiful beaches
Another one of Gaudí’s stunning
creations, this park is one of the most
complex and largest architectural
designs in the world. It’s my absolute
favorite place to hang out in Barcelona!
It was designed from 1900-1914, and it
sits on the beautiful hill of El
Carmel. This park is really unique, and
freely showcases the magical art of
Gaudí. The views of Barcelona are
breathtaking from the top. The park is a
Barcelona has some of the most
incredible beaches in the world. There
are 4.2 kilometers of golden sandy
beaches that are only a short distance
away from the city center. Fortunately,
the weather in Barcelona is pretty good
year round, so the beaches are always
packed with beautiful Spaniards. The
famous W hotel is a landmark on the
coastline- it looks like a giant sailboat
against the giant blue sky. Most of the
beaches are half-nude.. You will see
woman hanging out topless and lots of
men wearing speedos. This just goes
along with the openness of Barcelona
culture. As you are relaxing on the
sand, Thai women will approach you
and offer to give you a massage for like
$5 and homeless guys will try to sell
beer to you. It’s a pretty funny
scene. Overall, the beaches in
Barcelona provide a wonderful
atmosphere and great time!
4) Wander down
Las Ramblas
Photo by Thomas Quine on Flickr
Las Ramblas is a famous street in the
center of Barcelona. This tree-lined
pedestrian street is a huge tourist
attraction that stretches over a kilometer
in length. As you are taking a stroll
down Las Ramblas, you will see many
street vendors that you can bargain
with, shops to buy souvenirs, cafes to
hang out in, and delicious food places to
get your favorite tapas. Las Ramblas is
the best place in Barcelona to see street
performers and people watch! Be aware
that is can get quite dangerous by night,
as it’s a common place to get pickpocketed
and approached by random
strangers. If you walk by at night, try not
to blatantly act as a tourist. I must’ve
walked up and down this street a dozen
times when I was in Barcelona- it’s such
a cool area! Read more about Las
Ramblas here.
5) Check out the
Salvador Dalí
Museum
Salvador Dalí was a famous Spanish
surrealist painter. Whether you are a fan
of him or not, I highly recommend going
to this museum because it is
outstanding. His artwork museum is
located in his hometown of Figueres in
Catalonia, Spain. It is a little ways away
from Barcelona, but it makes a great
day trip up the beautiful coast of
Spain. Inside, you will find the biggest
and most comprehensive collection of
his artwork. For general information
about tours, hours of operation,
directions etc, check their website.
6) Walk around the
Gothic Quarter
11

CONNECTIONS ISSUE 19
Myconnectionsmagazine.com
Photo by Victor Wong on Flickr
The Gothic Quarter is the center of the
Old City. The area stretches from Las
Ramblas to Via Laietana in one
direction, and from the Mediterranean
Sea to Ronda de Sant Pere in the other
direction. The Jewish Quarter of
Barcelona is also located in this
area. Many of the buildings are from
Medieval times, and some date as far
back as the Roman settlement in
Barcelona. I recommend going there
without a specific plan, and just wander
through the charming streets. You’ll see
nice restaurants, narrow streets and
cafes all around this area. It feels like
you are walking in a time warp because
you can really feel the long history of the
city. Read more about the Gothic
Quarter here.
7) See the view
from Tibidabo
Mountain
Standing at 512 meters tall, this
mountain has one of the best (if not THE
best) view of Barcelona! At the top of
the mountain, you will find all sorts of
things like an amusement park, a
telecommunications tower, and a
Catholic Church. The amusement park
is the oldest in Spain and one of the
oldest in all of Europe. You can get to
this mountain by railway or bus and the
journey to get there is quite fun! The
panorama views of the coastline and
city are spectacular. Spend an
afternoon up here, relax, and enjoy the
sunshine! More information about the
mountain and Amusement park can be
found here.
8) Go to FC
Barcelona’s Camp
Nou Stadium.
As you all should know, FC Barcelona
has one of the biggest fan bases of any
football team in the world. Their fans
are crazy, intense and legit. Camp Nou
stadium has been their home area since
1957. But what about this place is so
special? First off, it seats a whopping
100,000 people, making it the 11th
largest stadium in the WORLD. It has
hosted numerous UEFA Champions
league finals and the football
competition in the 1992 summer
olympics. If you get to see a game
here, then you are in for a real treat. If
not, they you can still take an awesome
tour of the building. This website has
Myconnectionsmagazine.com
more information about the tours and
this link will take you to the homepage of
the football team.
9) Spend an afternoon at
the Montserrat
Montserrat is a multi-peak mountain and
a great place to spend the day in
Barcelona. It offers a rich landscape, a
cool national park and a unique shrine
dedicated to the Virgin of
Montserrat. People flock to this relaxing
and peaceful mountain to get away from
the buzz of the city. Make sure that
your camera is charged because the
views from the top are amazing! I’d say
to set aside at least 5-6 hours if you are
planning a trip to
Monteserrat. Hopefully the weather is
nice and you can enjoy the fresh
Barcelona breeze! Read more about this
mountain here.
10) Admire the art
at the Picasso
Museum
Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter,
designer, sculptor and one of the most
influential artists of the 20th
Century. The Museum has the best
collection of his work, with over 3,500
different pieces. The museum not only
displays his artwork, but also reveals
Picasso’s relationship with the city of
Barcelona during his youth. It is cool to
see how his work progressed from his
youth into his adult years. It is FREE if
you visit on Sunday, but the line can get
pretty long (so get there early!) If you
go during the week, skip the line by
buying your ticket on this website.
