The American Association of Community Colleges. (2012). Reclaiming the American Dream: A Report from the 21st-
Century Commission on the Future of Community Colleges. Washington, D.C.: AACC.
In 2011, the AACC created the 21st Century Commission on the Future of Community Colleges to study how American
community colleges might meet the challenges of the future. In a 2012 report, Reclaiming the American Dream, the
Commission offered several recommendations, including shifting institutional focus from:
• Access only to one of both access and student success.
• Fragmented course-taking to clear, coherent educational pathways.
• Low rates of student success to high rates.
• Tolerance of achievement gaps among students to commitment to eradicate such gaps.
• A culture of anecdote to a culture of evidence.
• Individual faculty prerogative to collective responsibility for student success.
• A culture of isolation to a culture of collaboration.
• Emphasis on boutique programs to effective practices at scale.
• An emphasis on teaching to a focus on learning.
• Information as management support to information as learning analytics.
• Funding tied to enrollment to funding tied to enrollment plus student success.
“Baby boom retirements should create a steady stream of replacement openings for college-educated workers; by
2020, there will be 40 million college-educated baby boomers between the ages of fifty-five and seventy-five. The
United States is not currently producing enough workers with postsecondary education to replace these aging workers.
Between 1973 and 2008, the number of jobs in the American workplace requiring postsecondary education jumped from
28 percent to 59 percent. By 2018, the percentage of jobs requiring postsecondary training will increase to 63 percent.
But almost half of these new jobs will only require an associate’s degree or some college.” (Help Wanted: Projections of
Jobs and Education Requirements through 2018, Georgetown University’s Center on Education and Workforce).
