Provincial Parks Woodland Caribou Provincial Park is one of the three participating wilderness parks in Northwest Ontario where visitors can complete a backcountry paddling quest and become eligible to win a brand new Souris River kevlar canoe or XY Company designer paddles. Known as a cultural landscape, at over 486,000 hectares in size Woodland Caribou Provincial Park offers a vast roadless tract of uncut boreal forest protected within the system of Ontario’s Provincial Parks. It protects healthy functioning ecosystems, outstanding cultural landscapes and significant natural features including its namesake the secretive woodland caribou. To many outdoor travellers Woodland Caribou Provincial Park offers a giant playground. With approximately 2000 kilometres of maintained canoe routes and 20 outpost camps and lodges you may experience everything from paddling quiet lakes and streams to the comforts of quality roofed accommodation. Solitude, unforgettable fishing for walleye, northern pike and lake trout and exquisite scenery are a mainstay of both types of experiences. Shutterbugs will enjoy the chance to capture local wildlife. Moose, caribou, beaver, bear, bald eagle, song and shorebirds are regularly seen. Lynx, wolverine and wolves may also make their presence known. The park also captures the headwaters of the Bloodvein River. Designated a Canadian Heritage River, the Bloodvein is celebrated for its cultural and historical importance. The river flows westward over 350 kilometers to eventually reach Lake Winnipeg in central Manitoba. REMOTE YET ACCESSIBLE Roadless yet accessible is a unique feature of Woodland Caribou. Park staff are available to provide general information to get you aquatinted with the park. Local outfitting services will help with your more detailed trip planning needs ranging from partial to complete outfitting, shuttle services to the parks road and water entry points and float plane access in or out of the parks interior. There is no greater experience in which to learn and discover Northwestern Ontario’s most precious natural resources. WHERE NATURE STILL RULES For all who plan to visit Woodland Caribou, be prepared to experience nature on its terms. Amidst its wildness you will witness rugged beauty and experience its powerful moods. Prepare to be humbled by towering cliffs or by a sudden summer storm as you scurry to shelter. Understand that the trails you share with others were laid out generations ago by the ancestors of the area’s First Nations. Observe the circle of life in the boreal forest by paying closer attention to the rich re-growth in the wake of a recent forest fire. Indulge your sense of adventure but remember to treat the area with respect. Soak it all in allowing your mind, body and spirit to be rejuvenated as far too soon the journey will end and you will draw upon your memories to sustain you until your next visit. RED LAKE AIRPORT The Red Lake Airport is a vital air transportation link for the Northwestern Ontario region. It is specifically vital for the transportation of goods and passengers along with providing airport facilities for itinerant aircraft servicing the Northern Communities of the Region. Tourism and the Mining Industry rely on the convenience of the Airport in connecting to the rest of the country and beyond. Due to the relative isolation of Red Lake to large Metropolitan areas, the Airport provides a key connection to healthcare facilities in Winnipeg and Thunder Bay. The Airport offers the following aviation related activities and services; cargo, corporate and scheduled operations, aircraft maintenance and refurbishing, Medevac, Ministry of Natural Resources Forest Fire Management Base and fuelling services. SERVICE The Red Lake Airport has seen consistent growth in passenger levels since the 2005 level of 32,139 passengers to 36,577 passengers in 2010. The air carriers that provide scheduled service are Superior Airways, Wasaya Airways, Bearskin Airlines and North Star Air; this is augmented by charter service from Superior Airways, Calm Air, Perimeter Airways and Goldcorp. The Red Lake Airport also serves regular medevac flights and cargo flights through various service providers such as Wasaya Airways, Superior Airways, Ornge, Calm Air and Perimeter Airlines.
