OPPORTUNITY PROFILE
HOPE HAVEN, INC.
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
ROCK VALLEY, IOWA

FROM THE BOARD
Dear prospective candidate,
Thank you for your interest in the position of CEO at Hope Haven. We are a vibrant Christian
ministry that seeks to help unleash the potential in people through work and life skills so that
they may enjoy a productive life in their community.
The Board of Directors has been aware for some time that a number of our upper level management
team would be retiring, including our current CEO. The board has been praying and planning
for a smooth transition. Early in 2016, the board appointed the Leadership 2017 Committee
to guide the search process for the new CEO. The Board also authorized the Committee to
hire JobfitMatters to assist in the search process. Over the past few months the Committee
has been reflecting on the abilities and qualities that have served the ministry well over the
past years as we define what we need in our next leader. We have also been evaluating the
broader current culture and anticipated government changes as we look toward the future.
We are at a place of mixed emotions: sadness over saying goodbye to our current CEO and
hopefulness as we anticipate saying hello to a new leader. We are pleased to share the story of
Hope Haven with you and invite you to get to know us through the pages of this Opportunity
Profile and see for yourself the ways God has blessed this ministry in the past. As we anticipate
His blessing in the future, we seek a Christian leader who has a passion for people and a desire
to help them unleash their potential in partnership with others. We are excited to see where
God will lead us in the future under the leadership of a new CEO.
Please prayerfully review this Opportunity Profile and familiarize yourself with the leadership
characteristics that we seek. Please share it with others who, in your judgment, may also be
potential candidates. If you believe your gifts, abilities, and experience align with our needs
in a CEO, please refer to the Application and Inquiry Process page to know how to proceed.
If you have questions, please contact the office of Laura Coverstone and Tommy Thomas (615-
261-4623), the consultants at JobfitMatters.
Thank you for taking the time to prayerfully consider whether God might be calling you to
the position of CEO at Hope Haven. We are praying that God will guide all of us through this
process for His glory.
Sincerely,
Ron Boote
OVERVIEW
Hope Haven, Inc. is non-profit organization based in Rock Valley, Iowa. With a heritage in the
churches of several Reformed denominations, it began in 1964 as a way to meet the needs of
children in the area with hearing impairments
Today, it serves special needs individuals and their families living in nearly 30 Midwest
communities through residential, employment, mental health, and religious and international
outreach services. Hope Haven believes that as followers of Christ we are called to unleash the
potential in people by offering life, work and spiritual development to those with a variety of
disabilities.
Hope Haven’s community living service for children and young adults is a highly respected
residential service that gives healing and hope to children and young adults that have
developmental and psychiatric challenges. Through its adult community and supported living
services, Hope Haven is able to offer personal independence and community living for adults.
Through its vocational and job placement services, Hope Haven provides individuals with
varying challenges the opportunity of employment. It offers community-based, facility-based
and integrated employment programs that enhance and enrich lives. Hope Haven develops
life skills, provides work and independent living options, but also places emphasis on spiritual
growth. As a Christian service agency, Hope Haven encourages partnerships with local
congregations so that the people served may attend a church of their choice, and works with
the various denominations to receive people with disabilities into their congregations.
Double HH Manufacturing, a division of Hope Haven, Inc., uses a mix of workers, both those
who have disabilities and those who do not, to manufacture and provide quality products for a
wide-range of industries. A “reverse-integration operation” provides training and employment
for people with disabilities in a modern manufacturing setting. Double HH was featured in
CIRAS News, a publication of the Iowa State University, Office of Economic Development and
Industries Relations, College of Engineering. A link can be found at http://www.ciras.iastate.
edu/publications/DoubleHH.pdf.
Hope Haven also serves people around the world, offering life-changing mobility through
its international wheelchair ministry. Nearly 120,000 wheelchairs have been refurbished and
distributed to 107 countries thanks to Hope Haven volunteers.
With the retirement of David VanNingen in the summer of 2017, the Board of Directors is
seeking the next CEO of this $40 million organization. Hope Haven is looking for a leader with a
strong faith and financial background. The Board seeks someone who is comfortable working in
a board structure and in a highly regulatory, and ever-changing, industry.

MAP OF HOPE HAVEN SERVICE LOCATIONS

HISTORY OF HOPE HAVEN
Hope Haven was launched in 1964 from a vision of four Rock Valley, IA community members who responded to a need for children with hearing impairments. It
first opened its doors as a school with two teachers, an aide, and eleven children in a classroom rented from the local Christian School. Hope Haven continued to
develop new programs to accommodate ongoing needs, such as work, housing, and support for people with disabilities.
1950s
Several people from Rock Valley and the surrounding
area sought to meet the educational needs of local
children with disabilities.
1960s
Hope Haven was established in 1964 serving 11
children with 3 staff members. At first, leased
facilities accommodated the educational programs.
By the mid-sixties enrollment had increased to
the point that facilities dedicated to the ministry
were needed and Hope Haven’s first building was
constructed. As students completed schooling,
Hope Haven began providing work training and
employment options for people with disabilities.
1970s
The addition of several buildings occurred to meet
the growing demand for services provided by Hope
Haven, including houses to serve as homes for
children and adults and expanded facilities for work
training and employment services. Hope Haven
pursued and obtained national accreditation
through the Commission on Accreditation of
Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Hope Haven has
maintained CARF accreditation ever since! Hope
Haven discontinued its school services as local
public and private schools began addressing the
educational needs of children with disabilities.
1980s
Growth and expansion of services continued with the
addition of several group homes, the development
of additional employment evaluations, training and
job placement services, and specialized services
for adolescents with behavioral disorders and for
adults with chronic mental health disabilities.
1990s
Community living services expanded to several
area communities in NW Iowa and in SW
Minnesota. Double HH Manufacturing with its
focus on integrated employment and state of
the art manufacturing moved to new facilities.
Hope Haven International Ministries (HHIM)
began with its first wheelchairs being delivered in the
Dominican Republic and Romania. HHIM grew to
include wheelchair refurbishing centers in nine
communities in a tri-state area as well as in the
South Dakota State Penitentiary.
2000s
Services continue to expand. By the year 2000
Hope Haven provided 42 services in 22 different
communities. With assistance from Dordt College,
Hope Haven developed and began to manufacture
a wheelchair specifically designed for children. HHIM
offered its first camp for people with disabilities in
Guatemala in 2002 and has replicated that camp
each year since then. Additional homes for adults
and for children were opened in Iowa and Minnesota.
Double HH Manufacturing obtained ISO Certification.
Hope Haven Canada Ministries was incorporated.
2010 to current
Hope Haven acquired The Achievement Center in
Worthington Minnesota, Echo Plus in Spirit Lake/
Estherville, and Sunshine Services in Spencer, Iowa.
New homes were opened in Rock Rapids, Orange
City, George, Sioux Center, Rock Valley, and Spirit
Lake, Iowa. Following a flood that devastated Rock
Valley, three new homes were opened to replace
those damaged by the flood. Hope Haven began
My Choice Employment as a specialized service to
support people with disabilities in obtaining and
maintaining competitive jobs within area businesses.
To date, over 100 area businesses have employed
people with disabilities through My Choice
Employment. Hope Haven celebrated its 50th year
of ministry and completed a major renovation of its
main facility in Rock Valley.
HHIM developed another wheelchair called the Bee
Line to meet the ongoing need for mobility aides
in developing countries and began producing chairs
at its factory in Guatemala. The Guatemala “shop”
employs people with disabilities to manufacture the
chairs.
Efforts to completely integrate all day-habilitation
and employment programs are underway. Recently,
the State of Iowa transitioned all Medicaid funded
services to private managed care. Hope Haven
responded by adapting its business model to this
new model. Meanwhile, Hope Haven’s Religious
Services continues to expand its partnership with
area churches to facilitate the gifts of people with
disabilities within the life of local congregations.

LOCATION
ROCK VALLEY
Rock Valley, Iowa is a growing town of 3500 people in a growing county of 30,000. It is situated
just 45 miles from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a growing city of nearly 200,000 residents. It is also
located only 50 miles from Sioux City, Iowa, another growing community with ample services to
complement those of Rock Valley.
Sioux County is unique in so many ways. The county has three colleges; two private and a
community college. The communities of Hull, Sioux Center, Orange City, Hawarden and Rock
Valley are home to both private and public schools. Rock Valley is home to two Christian
schools and the Rock Valley Community School. The county regularly boasts high school state
sports championships. In 2016, our local high school football team captured the state title.
The county has a thriving health care system including hospitals, clinics, and senior care. The
Hegg Medical Center in Rock Valley recently began a $25 million renovation and expansion
project to meet the health care needs of the community members. Families are a priority in
Rock Valley, and education is paramount. And faith ties the families, businesses, schools and
communities together. Churches of varied denominations are located throughout the county
and in Rock Valley.
Rock Valley is known way beyond its borders for its industry. Parts produced in Rock Valley by
world class manufacturing companies are shipped throughout the country. The highly skilled
labor force is recognized for its hard work, innovation and competency. The growth of the
manufacturing sector in Rock Valley is sustained through a total community effort. Rocket
Manufacturing is a modern manufacturing business located within the walls of the Rock Valley
Community School and operated by the students. It is one example of the partnership
between business and education to assure the growth and well-being of the community. Over
600 people commute to Rock Valley each day to access employment. Since 2015, the Rock
Valley Economic Development Corporation, in partnership with the city, has purchased over
300 acres of land for residential development. Over 100 new homes have been built in the last
5 years to suit a variety of family incomes. Additional home construction is underway.
Rock Valley takes care of its neighbors, so to speak, in recognition that “neighbors” reach beyond
the borders of the town. The citizens take that obligation seriously, as evidenced by a host
of Rock Valley non-profit organizations and ministries. In addition to Hope Haven, the Foster
Grandparent and Senior Companion programs promote volunteerism in schools throughout the
area. Love In the Name of Christ, one of 140 Love INC. chapters located throughout the USA,
