CHARLOTTE, NC
OVERVIEW
Charlotte Rescue Mission (CRM) is a regional leader in providing cost-free, Christian, faith-based
residential recovery programs that help impoverished people struggling with the disease of addiction
achieve long-term sobriety, find financial stability and stable housing, and build healthy relationships.
In the 120-day structured program, residents experience weekly individual counseling, group therapy,
education classes, life skills training, biblical application for emotional wounds, and sober support
group development. The multi-faceted approach ensures that residents develop a deep understanding
of the root causes of their addiction. In doing so, they learn not only how to cope with the pressures
of staying drug and alcohol-free, but how to manage life scenarios that can trigger a relapse.
Charlotte Rescue Mission’s results are remarkable. Of the participants who complete the 6-month
program, 80% of them are sober 6 months after completion. This exceeds 30% of the recovery
programs in the nation.
After 28 years of leading Charlotte Rescue Mission, President and CEO Rev. Tony Marciano will retire
in June 2024 with the ribbon cutting of the new $40mm Men’s Recovery Center, Rebound. The Board
and Marciano feel this is an ideal time for the next CEO to begin a new season of leadership coinciding
with the new facility.
The next President/CEO will take over the helm of a healthy organization with a loyal executive team,
an accomplished board, a program proven to have exceptional outcomes, a superb financial situation,
and a stellar reputation in the Charlotte community. But there is more work to be done. The need for
CRM’s services is only increasing. First, the new CEO will transition staff and operations into the
newly built Rebound facility. Second, the larger facility means more people can be served, which
means recruiting additional qualified staff. Third, the next President/CEO will need to develop a plan
for the older Rebound campus when the new building opens in June. Fourth, more focus is being given
to increasing the program completion rate. CRM will continue to expand the recovery living program
to serve the needs of the program graduates. And finally, the next President/CEO will bring new ideas
for CRM’s future.
• Striving for Excellence
1. WE BELIEVE the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given
by inspiration of God.
STATEMENT
OF
FAITH
2. WE BELIEVE that there is one God, eternally existent in three co-equal
persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
3. WE BELIEVE that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. As God, His
death on the cross is sufficient to pay for our sins so that we may spend
eternity in Heaven with Him.
4. WE BELIEVE the Holy Spirit performs the miracle of new birth in
unbelievers and strengthens believers to live the life God has called
them to live.
The Board uses the Trinity as their model for governance. Just as in the
Trinity, each part of the Godhead honors each other’s role of:
BOARD
GOVERNANCE
MODEL
1) FATHER - initiates the plan of salvation
2) SON - executes the plan of salvation
3) HOLY SPIRIT - confirms we have been redeemed
The Trinity model identifies the responsibilities of the Board, President/CEO
and staff. Each has different roles, yet work in synergy to accomplish the
purpose of the Mission.
RECOVERY PROGRAMS
TRANSFORMATION FOR MEN
Located in the shadows of the Panther’s stadium,
Rebound is the recovery program for men. Rebound
provides a Christ-centered, faith-based, free,
residential recovery program for men who would not
otherwise be able to afford such services. The program
is modeled after the 12-Step Alcoholics Anonymous
curriculum but with one significant difference: by
providing credentialed clinical substance abuse
counseling within a Christian context, CRM’s program
completion rates are twice the national average.
TRANSFORMATION FOR WOMEN & FAMILIES
Located in West Charlotte, Dove’s Nest is the recovery
program for women and their children (ages 5-11).
CRM realizes that addiction is a family disease and
touches every aspect of the family, including children.
While at Dove’s Nest, children also receive clinical
care to begin their healing process. CRM strives to
help mothers gain the tools necessary to achieve longterm
sobriety while preserving and strengthening
bonds with their children. CRM does this through
Christian, credentialed counselors working in tandem
with the mother and child.
CRM’S HISTORY
1938
CRM was founded in 1938 by a group of Christian businesspeople who wanted to serve those facing
homelessness.
1990
Because many people who came to the Mission for help during those early years were struggling with
addiction, the Mission decided to pivot to focus on addiction recovery. The Mission provides free,
professional, Christian, residential recovery services using clinically trained counselors. With this,
CRM launched a 90-day residential program empowering individuals to move beyond cycles of
homelessness and addiction to become productive citizens in the community. Today, this program is
known as Rebound and has helped thousands of men over the years.
1992
Despite staggering community need, CRM’s leadership realized there was no similar program for
women. In 1992, CRM launched the Dove’s Nest for women, based out of a 12-bed facility in Dilworth.
1995
Rebound’s Recovery Residence opened its doors, marking the beginning of an ongoing focus on
supporting graduates as they transition out of the core program. The Recovery Residence provides
opportunities for Rebound graduates to maintain long-term sobriety as they transition out of
dependency on community programs and transition into self-sufficiency.
2008-2012
The Dove’s Nest Capital Campaign was launched to expand Dove’s Nest’s women’s addiction recovery
program to a 120-bed facility in West Charlotte. This facility would also allow mothers to bring their
children with them to the program. The doors of this new facility opened in July 2012.
2016
Both the Rebound and Dove’s Nest programs were expanded to 120-day programs.
2019
CRM opened Community Matters Café, a full-service restaurant and coffee shop adjacent to the
Rebound campus. Community Matters Café provides a six-month life skills training program that
teaches CRM recovery program graduates a variety of essential life and job skills that prepare them
for a successful transition back into the workplace. All proceeds from the restaurant are used to
support the programs of CRM.
2021
CRM launched Recovery Living, a new program designed to provide transitional housing and support
for up to two years after graduates complete the core 120-day program.
6
CRM’S PHILOSOPHY
It is important that the next President/CEO of Charlotte Rescue Mission understand and fully embrace
the philosophy of addressing addiction as a disease which is foundational at CRM.
Charlotte Rescue Mission accepts the American Medical Association’s definition of alcoholism as:
… an illness that is characterized by significant impairment in the emotional, psychological, spiritual, physical
and social areas that is directly associated with the persistent and excessive use of alcohol. Impairment may
involve psychological or social dysfunction. Alcoholism also is manifested as a type of drug dependence of
pathological extant and pattern, which ordinarily interferes seriously with the patient’s mental and physical
health and his adaptation to his environment.
Concerning the spiritual implications of alcoholism, CRM believes that alcoholism takes root in
alienation from God and the violation of conscience. CRM believes that God’s power can deliver
individuals from the compulsion to drink, and set them free from the emotional, psychological,
spiritual, physical, and social consequences of an alcoholic lifestyle.
Although an individual may be delivered from the compulsion to drink or drug (and is no longer a
“drunkard” in the spiritual sense), CRM recognizes that they are still an alcoholic or drug addict in
the therapeutic sense. CRM believes the continued use of alcohol or other drugs results in changes in
emotions, mind, and body that do not disappear upon an alcoholic’s salvation. On a physiological
level, they will always be “sensitized” to alcohol. Total abstinence, therefore, is a must; any use of
alcohol can “activate” the chemical mechanisms of addiction leading to compulsive drinking and
behavior.
7
CRM’S PHILOSOPHY
Charlotte Rescue Mission believes the physical aspect of the disease of alcoholism will remain with
the recovering alcoholic until they are glorified and receive their new body from the Lord.
Professional counseling and therapy is necessary to help individuals to overcome the consequences of
alcoholism and other drug addictions. CRM recognizes that alcoholism and other drug addictions are
a “family illness” and believes that all the members of the alcoholic’s family need to be a part of the
recovery process by receiving specialized help. CRM accepts the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous
as a reliable and orderly approach to recovery from alcoholism. CRM identifies the higher power as
the person and work of Jesus Christ. CRM also believes there are very specific scriptural principles
that must be applied to such an individual to assist in a victorious and fruitful Christian walk.
Many of the attitudes, temptations, feelings, and patterns of thought resulting from the alcoholic’s
lifestyle are not immediately removed upon an alcoholic’s rebirth. CRM believes these aspects
constitute elements of “sinful nature” or “flesh” that individuals will struggle with as long as they
remain in this world. Therefore, through a process of discipleship, individuals must “transform by
the renewing of their mind” (Romans 12:2) and must learn to “walk in the Spirit that they might not
fulfill the desires of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16).
COMMUNITY MATTERS CAFÉ
Community Matters Café celebrated its fourth anniversary in April 2023. When you walk into the café
on any given day, it may look like just another coffee shop or restaurant in Charlotte. But many of
the men and women serving there are strong people who have overcome addiction.
CRM launched the Life Skills Program at Community Matters
Café in April 2019 because graduates of the core program lacked
skills to thrive in society. Students in the 6-month Life Skills
program learn scheduled management, financial responsibility,
and coping with stress.
Guests at the café enjoy meals made from scratch, beautiful
surroundings, fellowship, and great coffee, all made possible
with the help of hardworking program graduates. The café is a
place where those who’ve walked through the hard work of
addiction recovery can confidently reintegrate into society in
the supportive company of community.
LOCATION
CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA
A beautiful yet expansive Southern city with over 880,000 residents (2.6+ million residents in the greater
metro area), Charlotte is located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina within a few hours’ drive of both
the Appalachian Mountains and North Carolina’s beaches. Charlotte’s geographical location, generally
temperate weather, relative affordability, and local culture draw many to the Queen City.
The city has cultivated a strong identity nationally as a finance and banking hub, second only to New York
City, and tends to attract professionals. Charlotte is a natural magnet for college graduates from
the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Duke University, Davidson College, and others in the Carolinas.
UNC-Charlotte, Queens University, Central Piedmont Community College, and Johnson & Wales University-
Charlotte offer a steady influx of graduates within the city limits.
There is no shortage of cultural options to explore in Charlotte. There are two Mint museums of art, the
Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, and the
Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. The Blumenthal Center presents the largest Broadway season in the
Carolinas, hosting more than 18 weeks of Broadway shows annually, from concerts to comedy to dance to
the Charlotte Jazz Festival and more. Charlotte is home to the Charlotte Ballet, featuring 28 professional
dancers. Sports fans enjoy an array of professional sports teams in the Queen City: Charlotte Hornets
(NBA), Carolina Panthers (NFL) and Charlotte Knights (minor league baseball) all have stadiums downtown.
An expansion Major League Soccer team, Charlotte FC, along with legendary NASCAR racetrack Charlotte
Motor Speedway and the PGA’s annual Wells Fargo Championship make the city a well-rounded center for
professional athletics. The U.S. National Whitewater Center offers whitewater rafting; trails for hiking,
running, and biking; ropes courses; yoga practices, and more. Charlotte is positioned between two lakes
– Lake Norman and Lake Wylie – where residents and visitors alike enjoy boating, swimming, and fishing.
Located in the historic Elizabeth neighborhood, Independence Park is the first and oldest park in Charlotte.
The 24-acre park features a rose garden with a gazebo, an adjacent perennial garden, a playground, athletic
facilities, hiking trails, and picnic areas.
There are multiple options for public transportation in the city. Charlotte offers the LYNX Blue Line light
rail system, multiple bus routes, bike sharing and ride-sharing services that provide transportation
throughout the region. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is a hub for American Airlines and the
premier airport in the region. For train fans, the city has an Amtrak station. The city’s real estate market
has appreciated in recent years, so home prices hover above the national median and rent prices are in
range of the national average. Property taxes are reasonable, and North Carolina state taxes rank in the
middle of the national average. “All in all, Charlotte offers a better value than some similarly sized metro
areas when comparing housing costs with median household income” (U.S. News and World Report).
Known by some as “The City of Churches,” there are at least 700 churches of many different types and
denominations in and around Charlotte. Well-known pastor and evangelist, Billy Graham, was born on a
dairy farm in Charlotte and buried on the grounds of Charlotte’s Billy Graham Library in 2018.
