4 York Parks and Recreation Department Senior Center The York Senior Center, located at 36 Main Street in York Beach, is a member based organization run by the Town of York Parks and Recreation Department. The Center’s Staff is dedicated to providing individuals in our community, age 50 and over, with opportunities to socialize, learn, recreate and be well through participation in activities and programs that are designed to enrich the mind, body and soul. Senior Center Annual Membership runs from July 1st to June 30th of the following year. Membership is open to Residents for a $<strong>15</strong>.00 fee and Non-residents for a $22.00 fee. All members receive a monthly newsletter and program guide, “The Scoop”. For non-members interested in what’s going on at the Senior Center copies of “The Scoop” are available in our office and on the Town’s website. Programs are also posted on the public access television channel 3. Some of our programs are reserved for members only, however there are many programs offered to the community at large, we welcome all to join in! We are on Facebook! Please be sure to “friend” us and be kept up to date with all the happenings of the Center. Additionally, we offer our members wireless internet access. Members are welcome to bring lap top computers, iPads, Kindles and any other devices that you might have that require internet service. While our programs and activities change from month to month, the following programs are offered on a regular daily, weekly or monthly basis. We welcome you to give them a try. Meal Program We serve home-cooked meals at 12:00pm, Monday - Friday. Our in-house chef works to provide you with the very best in both the variety and quality of meals. A meal donation of $4.00 per member is suggested. Non-member guests are always welcome at a suggested donation of $5.00 per person. Reservations for dining may be made up until 4:00pm the day before you wish to join us. In some cases, should space permit, we will accept reservations until 9:00am on a given day. Monthly menus may be found in The Scoop or on the website. In addition to noon time meals, complimentary (donations appreciated) coffee and “nibbles” are available each morning for our members. Maine Senior College Network South Coast Community College South Coast Community College is a division of the York County Community College and the Maine Senior College Network. The consortium of 17 independent groups from York County to Fort Kent offer adults over the age of 50 the opportunity to learn in a casual environment. There are no exams, no papers, no grades and no pressure. SCCC plans exciting, intellectually stimulating, non-credit courses and special learning opportunities; it’s learning just for the fun and enrichment of it. The Courses are held at the College (with a small exception of classes held at satellite locations) during daylight hours. Membership ($25.00 annually) in the SCCC program is open to anyone in York County and the Seacoast New Hampshire, who are over the age of 50, and is honored at all other Maine Senior Colleges. If you would like more information regarding the SCCC Program contact the York Senior Center Office. Cribbage Are you a cribbage player looking to play more often? There’s always a game or two going at the Senior Center. Senior Programs 5 Tai Chi Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese exercise that is well known for its health benefits including balance, memory and meditation. We are fortunate to have instructor Bob Porter on hand for this class and we welcome you to join him. No experience is necessary, just wear comfortable clothes and shoes and Bob will guide you through the rest. COST: $5.00 per class LOCATION: York Senior Center Activity Room DAYS: Fridays TIMES: 1:00pm Scrabble Calling all Scrabble players! Scrabble is a great way to meet new people, learn new words, use ones that you know and keep that memory going strong. All levels are welcome to join in the fun and challenge; we’ll be sure to pair you up according to your level of play. COST: Free LOCATION: York Senior Center Dining Room DAYS: Fridays TIMES: 1:00pm Dominoes Our group plays the game called “Mexican Train”. If you know it, that’s great, if you don’t we’ll teach you. All are welcome to play this exciting game; we look forward to seeing you here. COST: Free LOCATION: York Senior Center Dining Room DAYS: Mondays TIME: 12:45pm Wii Bowling Did you know that Wii Bowling is fast becoming more popular than BINGO among retirees? Yes, it’s true! Who doesn’t remember their first date at the bowling alley or those bowling shirts and personalized bowling balls? The best part of Wii bowling is that anyone can do it, even you! No need to worry about throwing your back out or hauling around a heavy ball. Success can be found with the gentle motions of a remote control. You can even sit, if it’s easier for you. We hope that you’ll plan to give it a try, it’s a ton of fun and ALL are welcome. COST: Free LOCATION: York Senior Center Activity Room DAYS: Thursdays TIMES: 1:00pm Mahjong MahJong is a game that originated in China, commonly played by four players. Similar to the game of Rummy, MahJong is a game of skill, strategy and calculation that involves a certain degree of chance. The game is played using a set of 136 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols. If you are a MahJong player looking for a game, we welcome you to join us. If MahJong is a game that you would like to learn be sure to check in with us as we occasionally offer lessons. COST: Free LOCATION: York Senior Center Card Room DAYS: Fridays TIMES: 1:00pm Yoga for You Join us at The Senior Center to experience the many benefits of yoga no matter what shape you are in. don’t have to be young, thin, or flexible to do yoga. Begin right where you are with YOGA FOR YOU. MOTION IS LOTION and this class of gentle stretches and accessible yoga postures, using a chair as an aid for balance and stability is for YOU. It promotes health through physical movement, will increase your flexibility, muscle and bone strength, joint pain, combat fatigue and enhance your overall well-being. Simple yoga poses circulate oxygen and nutrients through the body and help remove toxins and wastes from tissues and cells. So join us, try Yoga For You.
