OUR VALUES WEEK
ISSUES IN THIS
EDITION
Our Values Week
Business
Colep goes to the
University
This year, “Our Values Day” evolved into “Our Values Week” in which the celebration
began on the 28th of November and went on until the 12th of December.
We had a very positive and strong participation from all sites, both through the
submission of nominations for the “Living Our Values Every Day” survey, as well
as through the celebrations that happened in each site. Having everyone’s involvement
allows for these kinds of initiatives to happen positively and strengthen
the bonds that keep us together, whilst reinforcing the culture and the values
of Colep. We intend to continue with this kind of initiatives and hope to keep
counting on you.
We would like to thank you for your support and contribution in making this
year’s celebration one to remember. Let’s keep working together!
New Faces

BUSINESS
Aerosol & Dispensing Forum in New York
Colep exhibited at the first ever Aerosol & Dispensing Forum
in New York on 13th & 14th of September, launching its
innovation offer to the US market and showcasing its knowhow
in aerosol technology from its site in Mexico.
Santiago de Querétaro is the fastest growing city in Mexico
for logistics and manufacturing, as well as a centre of enterprise
and economic development, due to its established
supply chain and well-developed road and freight transport
networks leading to Mexico City – the gateway to North
America. The region is industry-rich thanks to its membership
of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA),
which encourages free trade throughout Mexico, USA and
Canada, with emphasis on removal of borders and the free
movement of people, to achieve its economic integration
goals.
At the two-day event, that welcomed global brand owners
and suppliers as well as key players from the US market,
Jo Jackson (Marketing & Innovation Manager) presented
“What’s trending in Europe”, focusing on the European
trends that are currently shaping the Personal Care and,
specifically, the aerosol industry.
We are looking forward to transferring our expertise
and know-how in aerosol technology to the US market
through our plant in Mexico.
Paulo Sousa, Sales Director for the Americas
Colep has initiated its operations in Mexico in 2013 with the
acquisition of a plant in Santiago de Querétaro, the heart
of Mexico.
COLEP GOES TO THE UNIVERSITY
Networking Session
Rui Valente (Divisional Supply Chain Manager, Packaging Division)
participated in “Career Day for Executives”, an event
organised by Católica Porto Business School targeting the
school’s older and current students of the Executive Course.
Compromising by speed meetings of small groups with
managers from different areas and business sectors, this
was a unique opportunity for networking and presenting Colep
within a hub of experienced professionals.

From Strategy to Action!
Pedro Pinho (Improvement Agent, Packaging Portugal) conducted
the session “From Strategy to Action!” at the job fair
“StartPoint” in the University of Minho. The aim of the session
was to present the Packaging Division’s business model
of continuous improvement, in an attempt to strengthen
bonds with the students.
Entitled “Colep Packaging Business System” (CPBS), the
model began its implementation in 2014 and is a clear reflection
of our intention to be constantly innovate and add
value to our business. Targeting the growth of a continuous
improvement attitude, the commitment with more complex
and global projects and the creation of a culture of excellence
within the company; the model intends to develop
the foundations for daily management and Lean leadership.
The CPBS has four crucial cornerstones which interact
with each other and are responsible for the viability of daily
changes in all hierarchical levels: the “Leaders”, the “Daily
Management”, the “Project” and the “Support”.
Finally, another key element of this model is the commitment
to continuous training of our employees. The CPBS
also aims at raising awareness towards sustainability issues,
for fighting the feeling of acceptance, for achieving excellence
in our daily work and for creating value for our customers.
Visioning the model’s global implementation and consolidation
throughout all Packaging areas, the main focus for now
is the industrial area as the agents are working to create a
bottom-up flow of information.
We have received very positive feedback from the students
who attended the session, who contacted us demonstrating
interest in our company.
As it is said by the Continuous Improvement
team members, the operational excellence is
not nice to have, but a must have.
University & Innovation
Eduardo Teixeira (Account Manager, Consumer Products Division)
conducted a class of the course Innovation in Biodesign,
a part of the Master’s degree in Bioengineering, at the
Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.
The class began with the presentation of Colep, mainly focused
on the internationalisation processes and technological
topics. Subsequently, Eduardo explained how the processes
and the whole dynamic of Innovation works in Colep,
opening the discussion to the concepts of innovation and
product development and their applicability in the company.
After making the journey from innovation to marketing and
selling of products and technologies, it was time to explain
the process and main purposes of Business Development
in mature product/service segments, and the differences to
innovative ones.
With the student’s engagement about Colep, Eduardo described
general aspects of career development in our company
and presented Colep Academy, as well as the Leverage
Programme.
The time of the class was exceeded, as the students wanted
to get to know more about Colep’s business and future job
opportunities at the company.

COMMUNITY
Colep presents Sustainable Cosmetis in Paris!
Raquel Teixeira (Corporate Sustainability Manager) and
Michele Del Grosso (Sustainability Expert at Aptar) presented
at the Sustainable Cosmetics Summit in Paris from 24th
to 26th October 2016.
The presentation “Life Cycle Assessment of Aerosols with
different dispensing technologies” introduced the recent
project undertaken by Aptar and Colep when they carried
out the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies to evaluate the
environmental impact of different products using the different
valve technologies and propellants. The presentation
also showed the potential to run LCA studies within business
activities.
OUR TEAMS
Open day in Colep Poland
In June, our team in Kleszczów celebrated the annual event “Open Day” with the participation of 870 people (both employees
a The day began with a visit to the plant, followed by the “Colep Family Picnic”. This Picnic is planned not just for adults,
but especially for kids, with plenty of family games available
and entertainment lead by animators.
As for the adults, they have the possibility to participate in
sports competitions, such as the Colep Volleyball Competition –
and the 2016 winners was the team of
Marek Markowiak!
“Really well organised event. A lot of
fun and lots of attractions. I would
willingly participate once again”, told
us Katarzyna, a participant brought by
our employee Francisco Almeida.
The whole event was not only successful,
but what is even more important,
safe. Next edition will be in June
2017. See you there!
There were that many attractions and fun that I was
not really willing to leave the place. I have never
enjoyed so much.

Peddy Paper at Vale de Cambra
The 6th edition of Colep Portugal’s “Peddy Paper” was held
on 24th of September at the Vale de Cambra City Park in
a very relaxed and entertaining atmosphere. It was a day
well spent, filled with activities, with Sustainability being the
main theme. Around 400 participants joined the initiative,
divided into 23 teams, and were supported by 25 members
of the event’s organisation. This get-together within an informal
environment was thoroughly enjoyed by all who participated.
We had an early start at 09h00, and the day took
off with warm-up exercises to boost all the participants’ energy.
All the activities, regardless of their level of difficulty,
were successfully achieved by all the teams. After the conclusion
of all the activities, there was a buffet lunch with live
music and entertainment together with a magic show.
After accounting for all the scores, the three winning teams
were announced, being awarded a visit to Passadiços do
Paiva in Arouca on 15th of October.
At the end of the day, all participants, although tired, headed
home with a wide smile on their faces and a sense of
accomplishment.
This was the first time that I participated in this initiative
and I really enjoyed it. It was a fun moment where
everybody, regardless of their job function, was able
to be together, talking and sharing ideas in an informal
environment. I am excited to do this again!
Packaging Division
LOOKING INSIDE FOR BEST PRACTICES
Sharing Knowledge
“Technical webinars” is a project of Marketing and Innovation
department - online presentation provided monthly via
Skype by M&I members from around the world to ourselves
and other interested parties/departments. By using this
tool, knowledge is distributed worldwide in an easy manner,
we share the information and experience between each
other, which is especially useful in terms of new technologies
or product categories.
Webinars are divided into three phases:
. 1A (theoretical part – basics);
. 1B (theoretical part – advanced);
. 2 (practical part – ie. scale-up);
. Presentation lasts 1 hour and covers one chosen topic
such as Body Spray, Antiperspirants, Sun Care, etc., at the
time.
They are scheduled until the end of 2016 and planned to
continue in 2017 with new topics as innovations will come.
It was a fun morning with my friends. During the afternoon,
there was a lot of socialising and entertainment.
Joaquim Alves, Impressor,
Packaging Division
Main benefits are helping the newcomers to gain knowledge
in a very effective and easy way, allowing experienced employees
to maintain and enlarge knowledge of raw materials,
technology and products, especially aerosols.
In the future, the information from webinars might be
translated to the modern e-learning form that will be easily
accessible for any dedicated person within the company.

LOOKING INSIDE FOR BEST PRACTICES
Project ”Valorização”
2016 has been special for the Aerosol unit in Brazil, in special
due to the consistent results from the turnaround project,
started in 2015.
The company mobilized all efforts and worked hard to reverse
a difficult situation, which consisted of instable results
in productivity, costs, safety, quality and no profits since
started its operations in 2012.
In 2015, the management team launched the project “Valorização”
(“Enhancement” in Portuguese).
Initially oriented by consulting services, and with support
from Colep worldwide, they mapped out the main issues,
defined critical projects, implemented an information system
and KPIs, took corrective actions, and intensified training,
resulting in:
• Zero LTA since April 2015;
• 99% level of attendance to the production plan;
• OEE increased to an average level of 70%.
Congratulations to the team in Brazil for the outstanding
results!
Creativity Training
Focusing on creativity and relationships with customers, our
team in the UK planned a training with the aim of strengthening
presentation skills as well as building and using creativity
tools to support approach.
In an environment of openness and favourable to creativity,
the trainees were pulled away from their comfort zone and
addressed out-of-the-box questions like “How to increase
Value to Customer X” and “What are our main concerns
when we are presenting?”. The reasons for the creation of a
Marketing & Innovation department and the need for such
area in Colep were also an important chapter to mention
and, finally, the trainees had to do an individual and an in
group assignment.

PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT
Developing our People is one of our strategies for success!
The People Development Cycle (PDC) involves a
formal, structured system of measuring and evaluating job
related behaviours and outcomes. Furthermore, it allows
for a progressive alignment between the careers path of
each employee and Colep’s expectations and a sustainable
development of our internal talent.
The PDC is mainly focused on functions with management
responsibility and technical expertise.
This strategic tool assumes several main objectives with
operational and global implications:
• Align employees’ behaviour and goals with the organisation’s
Values, Goals and Strategy;
• Clarify job responsibilities and expectations;
• Enhance individual and group performance;
• Provide an overview of employees’ performance and
potential within all locations and divisions;
• Manage employees’ skills and competencies to foster
their maximum potential in a high-performance
culture;
• Manage succession planning for the entire organisation
and especially for key functions;
• Define measures and tools to support the development
of our employees;
The PDC has 2 steps illustrated through different colours:
the green that refers to the Annual Performance Perspective
(short-term) and the blue identifying Career Management
Perspective (long-term).
In each cycle within the Annual Performance Perspective,
we evaluate the alignment between the Colep’s Value
and Competencies and those of each employee and the
direct manager. In this phase each employee’s career ambitions
are registered on the system to be considered on the
individual development plan or in new opportunities in the
company.
The Career Management Perspective involves our Managers
inputs related to Sustainable Performance and Potential of
each employee.
This is a critical process for each person’s career development,
for the success of our operations and for the company’s
results.
Pay attention to the Next Cycle Calendar, because all of us
are responsible for leveraging our careers and for Colep’s
Future!
Leverage
Leverage is our international trainees programme, aimed at young graduates.
While on the programme, each trainee develops one project for 24 months in
one of our sites throughout the world, while having international exposure and
facing challenging opportunities. They are fast tracked through the heart of our
business with training, coaching and support along the way.
For the Leverage Programme we
look for…
• Young graduates with maximum
of 3 years of working experience;
• University degree (Master level in
Europe) in Management/Economics,
Engineering (mechanic, electronic,
chemistry, industrial/production)
and similar areas;
• English fluency and Microsoft Office
knowledge.
Who...
• Are proactive in meeting and exceeding
expectations;
• Have good relationship skills;
• Are open to learn and to strive to
continuously improve;
• Are committed to value creation;
• Have an international mindset and
look for global assignments.
The Leverage I, edition of 2016, was aimed at graduates in Engineering, Management
and other similar areas and now the trainees are working in projects in
Poland, UAE, Mexico and UK. The recruitment process took place in Portugal
and Poland and the selected trainees had one month of integration and specific
training together in Portugal, before flying to their destinations to initiate the allocated
project. The projects areas of 2016 were Finance & Controlling, Procurement,
Production/Operations, General Management, Supply Chain, Engineering
& Maintenance and Packaging Technology.
From Colep’s side it is offered:
• Full time involvement: coaching
and support;
• Opportunities to develop and progress;
• Base salary and mobility incentives;
• Flights, transport and housing;
• Visa requirements to be supported
and organised by the company;
• Health insurance will be provided
(when required).
and of course... the opportunity
to leverage your career!
The success of the first edition in terms of internal search and applications and
the selected trainee’s performance has led us to develop the Leverage II, to be
initiated in 2017. For this new edition, we are looking for Masters trainees in Engineering,
Economics, Management and Sciences to develop projects in Brazil,
Germany, Mexico, Poland and UAE.
The Leverage Programme gave me the opportunity to grow in a professional
way. Unlike my mates, I was already a Colep employee and I had the chance
to move to a completely different area: Operational Excellence.
This experience allowed me to grow in a professional way, while being in touch
with different cultures and business people. Also, my fellow colleagues from
Leverage push me to give my best, to never give up and, most importantly, to
achieve the goals of Colep.
Cesar Camacho
César Camacho, a previous employee
in Mexico with a background
in Engineering, is an
example of an employee who
joined the Programme. At the
moment, César is doing a project
in Excellence Operations in
Querétaro.
Applications for 2017 are almost open.
Stay tunned!

NEW FACES IN SENIOR MANAGEMENT POSITIONS
My first days with Colep
Christian Shmidt
Managing Director of Healthcare Division
Christian Habedank
Managing Director of Bad Schmiedeberg Plant
Although I have gone past the first 100 days already it is my pleasure
to introduce myself to all the new colleagues and especially to
those of you who haven’t met yet with the new guy in Laupheim.
As you may be aware of I took up my position as Managing Director
of HealthCare in May 2016 and realised soon that I took over a big
challenge as well as a huge opportunity for Colep and the site in Laupheim.
My professional background is Engineering and I have spent
the past 22 years or so predominantly in pharmaceutical operations
working mainly for larger OEMs. During those years I was awarded
with great opportunities to also work outside of my home country,
which is Germany and also outside Europe, which not only enhanced
my professional experience but also enriched my life experiencing
other cultures. I am looking forward to being a part of Colep family
and to meeting my new colleagues working in other affiliates of
Colep.
I so far really appreciated the warm reception wherever I came to
and all the support I have been receiving during these first 100 days.
Best regards,
Christian
Since the end of August I am the new Plant Manager of Colep Bad
Schmiedeberg plant. I believe that now is the best time for me to introduce
myself to all my colleagues throughout the world. Some personal
information about me: I can say that I was born in Berlin, Germany,
and now I am 47 years old. My wife and I have two children – a son
and a daughter. My professional background is Environmental Engineer
and Economic Engineer. In recent years I worked as a Production Manager,
Managing Director and Continuous Improvement Process Manager
in various German companies.
My aim is to move the things in the right direction and master the challenges
that lie ahead together with the workforce; thereby I would like
to strengthen the “Made in Germany” profile of the site. In particular,
the creation of a culture of continuous improvement is very important
to me. I would like to challenge all employees to ask themselves every
day: “What can I do today better than I did yesterday?”. In the daily
work I attach great importance to the fact that everyone assumes responsibility
and acts as a focused and goal-oriented team member. At
this point I would like to thank all my colleagues for the warm welcome
in the great “Colep Family”.
With kind regards,
Christian Habedank
