Boys basketball
Knights keep it close before losing tight game to Bloom
Frank Gogola
Freelance Reporter
The Lincoln-Way Central
boys basketball team missed
a pair of shots while trailing
by one point in the final minute
and committed a costly
defensive foul, dropping a
non-conference road game
in Chicago Heights.
Central failed to pull out
another close game this season
as it lost 58-54 to Bloom
on Jan. 10.
The Knights caught fire
after a poor first quarter, but
a fourth-quarter drought and
missed shots dropped them
to 4-12 on the season.
Trailing 55-48, senior
Aaron Michalak scored a
layup with 1 minute and 32
seconds to play, then poured
in a corner 3-pointer on the
next possession to pull the
Knights within 55-53 with
44 seconds left.
After a Bloom timeout,
Michalak (12 points) stole
the ball near midcourt and
was fouled going the other
way. He made the first shot
of a 1-and-1 to pull Central
within a point 55-54 with 23
seconds left, but he missed
the second free throw.
“I felt it right away that I
had left it short,” Michalak
said.
Senior Brian Ponton
grabbed the rebound in between
four Bloom defenders
in the lane and got off a lefthanded
jumper that hit the
back left corner of the rim
and bounced out. Bloom rebounded,
and Austin Richie
(16 points) took an outlet
pass, drove to the basket,
drew an and-1 and sunk the
free throw to make Central’s
deficit 58-54 with 12 seconds
to play.
The Knights missed a layup,
and Bloom ran out the
clock.
“The worst thing to happen
was the 3-point play, because
now we don’t have a chance,”
Central coach Bob Curran
said. “It turned quickly.”
Curran and his players
were disappointed with their
record in games decided
by one or two possessions,
such as the four-point loss
to Bloom and a loss to Joliet
West, one of the top teams in
the state, on a buzzer-beater.
Bloom (11-3) picked up its
seventh win in nine games,
which included an upset of
Joliet West, then 11-0 and
the No. 5 ranked team in the
state, at the Pontiac Holiday
Tournament.
The Knights have shown
they can compete with top
teams. The focus now is on
hitting a high point in time
for the postseason, and improvements
in rebounding,
passing and free throws will
help them better close out
games.
“For us seniors, we’re
getting more ready for the
playoffs,” senior Bryan
Ross said. “These games
are important, but we’re really
focusing on the playoffs
because I think we can
do big things in the playoffs
this year. Even though
our record doesn’t show it,
I know we [have] potential
and talent.”
Against Bloom, the
Knights fell in a 12-2 hole
with the only points coming
on a pair of Ross free
throws. They missed their
first 14 shots from the field
until junior Chris Robinson
hit a 3-pointer to beat the
first-quarter buzzer.
Central used a 17-7 run in
the second quarter to take its
first lead at 22-21 with just
under 2:00 left in the half. Junior
Jake Blount hit a pull-up
jumper for the lead, capping
the run that included baskets
from six different players.
quarter, Ross scored nine
straight points to put Central
up 38-34 midway through
the quarter. He made a pair
throws to give the Knights a
47-43 lead with 7:20 to play.
However, they were held
scoreless for 5:08, as their
next five possessions went
turnover, offensive foul,
missed 3-pointer, a pair of
missed free throws and traveling.
Bloom used a 10-0 run
during that span to go up 53-
47 with 2:50 remaining.
Central would only get as
close as one point.
“[The loss] hurts because
we know they’re a good
team,” Michalak said. “We
think we’re a good team,
too. We’ve played a lot of
close games this year. Our
record could be a lot different.
We just [have] to work
on finishing.”
