KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT
READY FOR A DOGFIGHT
KINGSTON LOOKING FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN OVER ICEDOGS THIS SEASON
They say revenge is a dish best served cold. For the
Frontenacs, revenge over the IceDogs from the
round 2 playoff loss this past spring has been served
over the ice of the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines
so far this season with 2 wins, and now shifts to Rogers
K-Rock Centre tonight.
Unlike the 2016 OHL Playoffs, the Frontenacs
haven’t had any problems getting pucks past the
IceDogs goaltenders, scoring 8 goals in the 2 games
so far this season. The IceDogs, without the veteran
scoring power they had last spring have only managed
a single goal.
The IceDogs come into Rogers K-Rock Center
tonight fighting for the final playoff spot in the Eastern
Conference. They’ve managed to put distance
between 10th place Barrie Colts, and have tied 8th
place North Bay Battalion, with 5 wins and 5 regulation
loses in their past 10 games. After 46 games
played this season, the IceDogs have 16 wins, 23
losses, 4 overtime losses, and 3 shootout losses,
good for 39 points. But with a record on the road this
season of only 5 wins, 14 regulation losses, 3 ovetime
losses, and a shootout loss, they are in for a fight tonight
if they are looking for the win.
The Frontenacs, with 10 points in their last 10
games, are looking to keep adding points to move up
in the standings to secure home ice for the first round
of the playoffs. After 45 games played this season,
the Frontenacs are seeded in 5th place in the Eastern
Conference with 20 wins, 17 regulation losses,
5 overtime losses, and 3 shootout losses, good for
48 points, just 1 point behind Hamilton in 4th place,
5 points ahead of the Sudbury Wolves in 6th place.
Frontenacs This Week // CogecoTV
The keys to a win for the Kingston
Frontenacs tonight against the Niagara
IceDogs will come down to how effective
they are on these key points in their game
plan.
1. FOCUS ON THE NOW Tonight’s game is what
is commonly known as a “trap game”. Niagara
is in a rebuilding season and is struggling on
the road. This is a game that Kingston should
win. On top of that, Kingston’s next game is
against a division leading team in front of a
sold out home crowd on Tragically Hip night.
Sometimes in these situations teams will start
major, as well as a game misconduct. Shortly
after that Desrocher took a 2-minute penalty
for kneeing. Both of these calls may have
been questionable, but that point is irrelevant
because a referee always has the final word.
The Generals scored on the power play and
worked their way back into a game. Kingston
held on to win by a single goal. Kingston
needs to stay out of the box to avoid giving
teams additional chances to hang around or
get back into games.
3. PEDAL TO THE METAL LKingston is known
for playing in a lot of one goal games. They
actually have done quite well in those games.
The problem is that sometimes they were in
complete control of those games before the
looking ahead to the next game a little too
early. Its easy to understand why they may be
thinking ahead. Paul needs to keep the kids
focused on the team they will face tonight
before they start to think about tomorrow
night..
2. STAY OUT OF THE BOX Kingston has a
decent penalty kill ranking for the season,
but anytime you give a team an extra man
it’s a dangerous time. Last week Kingston led
4-0 over the Generals before Rasanen was
called for boarding and received a 5-minute
game tightened up. We saw a 4-0 lead against
Oshawa become a one goal win, we saw a 3-0
lead against Peterborough become a 4-3 OT
loss, and there are other examples as well. If
Kingston gets ahead of a team, they need to
continue to put offensive pressure on them.
It’s easy to play defence if your spending the
majority of the game in the offensive zone.
ticket holder and is co-host and analyst on Frontenacs
y Doug Graham
Kingston Whig-Standard
The Kingston Frontenacs have made no secret
of the glue that keeps them together.
The team prides itself on a work ethic second to
none in the Ontario Hockey League.
Void of the big offensive stars that led the way
for last year’s Eastern Conference championship
team, this year’s version has nevertheless remained
in contention in a wide-open conference
race by its “hard work” mantra.
“We pride ourselves on that. In practice every
guy is working hard,” said fourth-year defenceman
Liam Murray.
good defensively. His gap control continues to get
better, his puck decisions continue to get better
coming out of our zone.”
McFarland had no problem using Murray to
play on the top two defensive pairings when Jacob
Paquette was out early in the season or when
overage defenceman Nathan Billitier has missed
games. Otherwise, Murray is the steady veteran
paired with a young Jakob Brahaney or Emmett
Gordon.
Murray, who is closing in on 200 games of service
in the OHL — he played 116 games for the
Windsor Spitfires over two seasons before coming
to the Frontenacs in a trade last season — said his
game has evolved since he came into the league
MURRAY
A STEADY BLUE-LINE PRESENCE
“It’s something we do to make sure no matter
what that every game we have that in our back
pocket, that we are going to out-work our opponent.
More often than not it is going to work in
our favour.”
The 19-year-old Murray is certainly doing his
part. The six-foot-two, 218-pound native of Orleans
takes a back seat to no one on the team in
the work department.
“For our group, just in our preparation for each
game, he is a huge part of creating energy, making
sure our group is ready,” said head coach Paul
McFarland.
“Liam’s hard to play against. He plays really
as a 16-year-old in 2013.
“I think it just comes with confidence. It’s my
fourth year so confidence plays a big part. Really
just making sure every day I do the same thing.
Making sure my routine never changes. It’s working
for me right now and things are going well,”
Murray said.
“I’m not a guy that’s going to score a lot or put
up big numbers. I’ve got to make up for it at the
other end in our D zone. I think that’s something
I’ve been able to do quite well this year. I’m just
looking to keep that up.”
Murray scored a big goal in the Frontenacs’ 4-3
win in Peterborough earlier this month. He has two
14 KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY MAGAZINE

goals and six points and has played in all Kingston
games. Amongst the team’s defencemen who
have played the most minutes–Stephen Desrocher,
Eemeli Rasanen, Billitier and Paquette–Murray
is the only one on the plus side in the plusminus
statistic.
“Obviously it’s fun to see him score in Peterborough
but he knows every night he’s got to find
ways to contribute in other ways, too,” McFarland
said.
“He takes pride in playing good defence and
getting the pucks into our forwards hands. He
knows how he contributes [to wins] is not necessarily
about points.”
Murray said that while the team obviously
doesn’t have the offensive talent of last year’s
club, hard work and role acceptance is helping to
counter that.
“We’ve got guys that are buying in, realize what
their roles are. Really just stepping up and doing
what is needed to get the win,” Murray said.
“Compared to last year we have some more
depth, more of an even-out team. I think we have
a team that can really surprise some people and
make a push into the playoffs.”
The Frontenacs, who are tied for fourth in the
Eastern Conference with the Hamilton Bulldogs,
are certainly adept in close games. The team has
an impressive .717 points efficiency in games decided
by one goal. The Frontenacs have picked up
33 out of a possible 46 points in games decided
by one goal.
“If you get 20 guys willing to work, willing to
block shots, willing to win races and they all do it
for each other I think you are going to have success
no matter what age you are,” McFarland said.
“Our guys have a great attitude at the rink every
day. Practices have been as hard [working] as any
team I have been around. Hopefully that continues
and we just keep pushing forward to get better.”
