CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE
VICE CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE
The journey of excellence which started more than two decades ago,
reached a new milestone with the establishment of Ansal University under
the Haryana Private Universities Act, 2006. I congratulate the management of
this new age University for its progressive and futuristic approach to imparting
higher education to students drawn from around the world in disciplines
and professions that have the greatest bearing on the future of India and the
World.
The greatest universities in the world pursue their mission of serving mankind
through imparting knowledge and wisdom and exploration of the unknown
through in-depth research, thereby improving the quality of life. Ansal
University is regarded as an institution which lays extraordinary foundations of academic excellence. Our alumni, as
professionals and industry leaders have added value to the best companies and organisations throughout the world. We
aim to build the future on these strengths and rise to even greater heights of distinction, scholarship and service. We shall
develop Centres of Excellence that bring the cutting-edge to all fields, benefitting society as a whole and the poor and
underprivileged in particular. Our collaboration with the top ranked Universities of US, UK, Canada, Australia and France
have helped us in benchmarking the global best practices.
The future of our societies entails greater-than-ever-before responsibility on the universities. In a world which will witness
increasing age of its people, governance issues, newer horizons in use of technologies and fast changing economic
landscape, specialized knowledge and skills will be key resources and will be highly sought after. The challenges shared
by all universities, will be to generate new knowledge keeping in mind the environmental sustainability.
I thank the university staff, alumni, students and industry who have contributed to the growth of our institutions and
commit ourselves to nurturing students who shall lead the communities of the future and work with a visionary zeal to
serve the humanity and transform societies by bringing peace, harmony and prosperity.
The Ansal University is a new-age University known for globally
recognized quality education in technology, management, humanities,
architecture and design. At the University, we maintain the highest
standards of education and give our students the most stimulating
environment for learning. Our focus is on developing human resources
that are appropriate for India’s emerging needs as we go forward in the
new millennium. There has never been a greater need for having different
perspectives, right attitudes, relevant practical knowledge, softer skills,
innovative thinking, creativity and above all, leadership. The changing
business, social and economic environment needs restructuring of
educational processes and educational programmes in new areas.
At Ansal University, we believe in academic excellence, social responsibility, professional and personal growth of
students and faculty and these values guide us in every endeavour. Our faculty have the right blend of experience,
academic qualifications from leading institutions in India and abroad and rich experience of working in leading
institutions and universities. They employ latest pedagogical tools like structured lectures, seminars, case studies,
live projects and assignments to create a learning environment. The trans-disciplinary approach to learning helps
students develop integrative skills, research orientation, sound reading habits and inculcate team spirit.
There is a structured approach to engage the students in projects related to social problems to sensitize them
towards these issues and become better human beings.
The End of the Year book presents an account of varied learning activities undertaken by schools of the University
and represents rich learning our students undergo in an inter-disciplinary environment with understanding of multicultural
sensitivities.
Wish you an enjoyable reading!
TRUSTEE’S MESSAGE
Our cardinal principle at Ansal University is that we are ‘learning-centric’ and not ‘system-driven’. For us, the seminal
activity is the interaction between a teacher and a student, whether within a classroom or without. Every other is a support
to this seminal activity. The freedom of academic enquiry precedes all.
Each of our eight schools and programmes has its own specific pedagogy, methodology and emphasis. But still there are
some common qualities that mark an Ansal University education. This includes the high quality of our dedicated faculty
which has an international outreach, the small intimate size of our programmes and classes, the emphasis on dialogue
outside the classroom and the intensive nature of the education. Among these I wish to highlight two aspects that make
Ansal University experience truly distinct. First is a hands-on, discovery mode of learning: enquiry by doing. Across the
different programmes, there is an emphasis on concrete doing, of moving forward from concrete problems to solutions
and not from abstract principles or rote learning.
This segues into the second aspect of the unique Ansal University experience. This is the hands-on enquiry that happens
under the rubric of ‘Trans-Disciplinary Learning’. TDL, as it has come to be known, builds on the long tradition of a liberal
arts education: to think, learn, question and research liberally, freely and yet in a disciplined manner without disciplinary
boundaries. TDL emphasizes a necessary width of horizon in contrast to a narrow vocational focus and encourages
students towards dialogue and team-building. It espouses in itself all the aspects of a good education.
Our excellence is well illustrated by the global and national recognition our students and faculty have garnered. Across
the schools, our students have won national and international awards, our faculty has published in high-impact journals
and the University has hosted a number of international conferences. What has been truly remarkable are the many
international tie-ups as well as the students and faculty exchange programmes that have poured into the various schools.
We remain focused on the service of our nation, but our benchmarks are truly global. Our students step out confidently
not only into a fast growing country but as leaders in a global arena.
At Ansal University, we have embarked on a boundless journey of enquiry with imagination, discipline and determination. The
works, activities and conference notes contained in the year book here are a testimony to this and a harbinger of things to come.
ARCHITECTURE

SSAA 11
ethical - this is not just a favourable set of values one espouses when convenient, but what one deploys
even when not personally favourable. In a fast developing country with critical sustainability, environmental
and equitability issues, the ethical cannot be overemphasized. These emphases, and the dynamism of our
exceptional faculty, make SSAA the benchmark for every architecture school in the region today.
Two years ago SSAA had began focusing on sustainability and in incorporating the new tools that have
emerged in energy analyses. We specifically set out not to create an add-on understanding of sustainability but
to address it as a core concern of design. In the new curriculum and structure that SSAA has now adopted,
there is now even more hands-on training with this and the accompanying new digital tools. SSAA graduates
will be on the forefront of addressing any issue of sustainability with more advanced means.
Dean’s Message
Sushant School of Art and Architecture is now almost 25 years young. Excellence has been the mode of
existence since inception, and today we step forward with a confidence that comes only with success and
experience. An SSAA education is unique and marked for the emphasis on free thinking, technical expertize
and design that addresses social and cultural issues. Architecture for us is still heroic and modernist but today
it is also a mode for theoretical enquiry and consideration in a country that is now taking its rightful place in
the global arena.
At SSAA there are four aspects of architectural education, just as there are four legs to a chair. First is the
emphasis on vocational skills that one must learn to master just as any craftsperson. Second is the emphasis
on professional skills, which particularly in architecture means not only spatial manipulation, but also the
ability to concretize ideas in to built form. A third emphasis is that of liberal thinking- that is the ability to think,
analyze and learn freely and follow a query without a consideration for an end. This emphasis on philosophia
is what separates architecture from other professional and vocational training. A last emphasis is on the
With the completion of our digital lab with 3D printers/ rapid prototype machine, laser cutters and scanners,
we are now also setting up a new design pedagogy which will seamlessly move from digital to analog. In India
we are the first architecture school to do so. We are also now emphasizing more on intensive workshops
with emerging technologies such as robots in the construction industry, again a first. These workshops as
well as our dynamic student exchange programme and joint studios with international universities and our
guest lectures and conferences has brought home a simple point- our students and faculty exceed global
standards and yet remain focused on addressing problems specific to India with imagination and highest
technical expertise. The success of our students and faculty in national and international competitions as well
as publications makes this an indisputable fact.
Sushant School of Art and Architecture will continue to be one of the most intense and cutting-edge centres
of architectural discourse. With our community of innovative designers, architecture practitioners, scholars
as well as excellent students we will continue to structure professional roles, political agendas and academic
discourses in India and the global arena.
ABOUT THE SCHOOL
The Sushant School of Art & Architecture (SSAA) was established in September 1989 by
Chiranjiv Charitable Trust, a premier voluntary organization devoted to the cause of education.
In the last 20 years, SSAA has established itself as one of the top three architectural institutes
in the Indian subcontinent (as per the EUMD India List of Top Architectural Institutes in India
by the British Council). The B Arch. degree at Sushant School from the current academic year
shall be awarded through Ansal University, Haryana. The school is recognized by the ministry
of Human Resource Development, Government of India, All India Council for Technical
Education (AICTE) and the Council of Architecture (COA).
SSAA is located within a sprawling 14 acre campus against the scenic Aravalli hills and
boasts of modern infrastructure and facilities. In every stage of its long history, the school
has renewed the faith in the agenda of change, which can inspire the students to experiment,
create and refine their ideas and encourage a process of guided self learning. The emphasis
is on the development of faculties of perception, analysis, assimilation and decision making
with the help of both objective information and subjective attitudes based on reasons.
Architectural education at SSAA encompasses training in specific skills and exposure to a
broad range of issues. Technology and humanities are integrated with design to enhance
this process.
SSAA has a reputed tradition of excellence, which is demonstrated in excellent work being
done by the alumni in many countries across the globe. The faculty at Sushant School is
geared towards developing in each student, a strong sense of design, technical sensibility
and all–round awareness early in their career and endeavours to form many more research
and practice alliances in the future.
Through its alumni and faculty linkages, the Sushant School has cultivated associations with
a number of international universities such as Oxford Brookes’ University, University of York,
University of Melbourne, University of Virginia, University of Montreal, University of British
Columbia, and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, Illinois Institute of Technology in
Chicago, The Frank Lloyd Foundation, USA and The Schumacher Institute, Bristol, UK. The
school is an affiliate member of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA),
USA. International relationships ensure that SSAA renews its respected status within the
world design community.
brief of the programme
The five year under graduate programme in Architecture aims at attaining a high level of
excellence in architectural design, supported by lateral inputs from other subjects. The
students are exposed to a wide range of regular subjects and elective courses to equip
them with the knowledge and skills required to deal with the regional, climatic, economic,
technological and socio-cultural diversity of India, and the need for evolved solutions that
are unique to their context.
TO STIMULATE SENSITIVITY AND UNVEIL
SUPERVISION AND INTERACTIVE GUIDANCE
Each year of study at the school concentrates on a thematic base, addressed
programmatically in the design studio and supported by theoretical understanding and
related technological knowledge. Rural and urban settlement, social housing, community
structure and cultural fabric, urban process and architecture of the city are some of the
themes, connected with each other at various levels of the five years of study. The three
pillars of sustainability (environmental, social and economic) form the underlying principle
of learning at the school: a common thread through the years. Students are encouraged
to develop their individual design approach with an understanding of making of
architecture through the analysis of history of ideas, theories and cultural agendas, which
constitute the base for an architectural outcome of a particular time. Faith in creative
architecture therefore gets linked with the historical continuum in order to reinforce the
process of introspection.
SSAA 17
FIRST YEAR
THIRD YEAR
SECOND YEAR
FOURTH YEAR
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
Architectural design is seen as the central discipline of the architecture programme. The design studio is the arena
where the student develops his basic design skills while testing out the theories and methods learnt in the other courses
of humanities, technological and professional streams. The students understand the determinants of built form as
the interplay between form and space, affected by the contextual imperatives such as society, economy, cultural and
environmental concerns and the craft and technology of building. They review experiences from their own immediate and
personal environments as well as the values and perceptions of others involved in the process of design, namely, the user,
the client and the public at large. Derivation of concepts and strategies then lead to deliberate responses in the shape of a
specific design proposal with the help of organizational and communicative skills.
Each architectural design studio includes both short problems known as ‘time problems’ or sketches and major problems
that are process-oriented schemes. At every stage, the design problems are introduced through lectures, group discussions
and library research so as to provide the necessary philosophical and attitudinal background to a rational design approach.
The studio programme for various design problems is set well in advance of the commencement of the term. Wherever the
scope of integration exists, it is ensured that learning in other subjects is directly relevant to the studio problem.
The design faculty ensures clarity between cumulative and cyclical processes whereby the experiences from the previous
year are used as a base for increasing the depth and breadth of knowledge and development of skills in the following
year. There is an overall progression from first to fourth year, whereby the students start with engaging with spaces for the
self, to community, institutions and the scale of housing and urban design. Through the iterative and cumulative design
process, different sets of aesthetic operations are performed on available data of various kinds. This anchors research into
the design process.
YEARBOOK 2013

SSAA 19
First Year
The first year design studio gives an introduction to design, its meaning, relevance and impact on the society. All designs,
whether they are abstract or material, have a common basis that they always express a new idea. In order to design, one
must invent, create a new and original conception for the given problem and finally, develop and execute this invention.
The origin of design process lies in the creative thought that takes numerous factors into account. The studio enables the
students to understand these tools and begin the process of design thinking.
Introduction to the creative method through design principles and taking the mind of the student from the ‘known to
the unknown’ is a continuous process. The tangible outcome of the extensive studio assignments is, to corroborate
the perception of space. It exposes the students to the plethora of the space world. The students coming from the
traditional vertical system of education unlearn and relearn by focusing on ‘learning by doing’. The objective is to tackle
students from varied backgrounds to a highly focused training in analytical abilities, visualization, communication and
representational skills.
The syllabus of the first year provides a creative stimulus and a starting point towards visual design and basic elements in
design, that is points, lines, planes and solids along with their application. The creative exercises are designed with these
elements in conjunction with the design principles. The studio involves continuous research that prepares the student for
higher courses in the succeeding years.
YEARBOOK 2013

SSAA 21
Second Year
The second year design studio is envisioned as a ‘contextual’ studio that introduces an understanding of the urban
context, building bye-laws and opportunities offered by local environments. The design studio emphasizes on progressive
understanding of the site surroundings, up to the complexity and scale of a neighbourhood. Through the course, there is
an emphasis on overall built form and its integration with open spaces, constructional systems appropriate to social and
economic contexts and climate responsive design.
As a part of the studio, a study trip is conducted, during which the students undertake a settlement study. The emphasis is
on documenting and analyzing the cultural context and its impact on various building typologies and settlement morphology.
The final project of the studio enables the students to engage with the issues and opportunities that emerge from the
settlement study, culminating in a design project that embodies cultural expression and symbolism in form and function.
SSAA 25
Fourth Year
The intention of the fourth year urban design studio was to help students envisage an alternate future for Gurgaon,
understanding the unique conditions and possibilities it offered both as India’s first neo liberal city and a hub of the
service sector as well as a magnet for migrants of all sections of society. The studio faculty stressed on an urban design
pedagogy that focused on inclusive, people centric strategies taking into account the unique nature of urban design in the
Indian context.
The studio takes up for study, two sites in Gurgaon: the first was ‘Gurgaon Old City’, north of National Highway 8, and the
second, ‘the Rapid Rail influence corridor’, comprised of the area between Mehrauli Gurgaon Road and National Highway
8, including areas like Cyber City, Nathupur village, DLF Phase two, DLF Phase three and so on. The two sites were
taken up because they offered learning opportunities in terms of understanding different types of urban fabric, formed at
different times, shaped by different historical forces, and continuing to be acted upon by forces that range from migration
to global investment, from infrastructural interventions like the metro rail and personal rapid transit (under construction) to
significant shifts in ecology.
The studio started with an immersive pedagogical model, letting the students observe, document and express through
any combination of media, things that caught their eye and were of interest to them. This was followed by a structured
visual analysis based on an understanding of specific concepts from works of Kevin Lynch, Robert Venturi, Yoshinobu
Ashihara and Gorden Cullen. Parallel to this, the students were required to understand and present from two urban design
books, in a further attempt to introduce ways of thinking specific to the discipline. After the visual analysis, the students
moved on to physical network analysis (Module 2) and socio-economic analysis (Module 3) of their respective sites.
The entire site analysis exercise was instrumental in forming a Vision that took into consideration social and economic
issues and was articulated in coherent spatial strategies that imbue character and identity to the urban environment.
The Structure Plan, thus developed, then enabled the students to move on to the design stage where they proposed
interventions and specific projects on their respective sites.
understanding and analysis of the climatic, physical, social and economic contexts of the design, design methodology
and history of design development, selecting and devising appropriate construction systems, leading to a final design
An integral part of the architecture curriculum is the training of the students in documentation of historical landscapes.
This is seen as a way to inculcate the habits and skills of observation, measurement, documentation and analysis through
various formal and socio-cultural theoretical matrices. Students engage with local contexts through interviews of residents,
interaction with local government officials and inputs from experts and scholars. The documentation studio is also a life
changing exposure to non-urban contexts and lifestyles and challenges that students living in cities are rarely exposed to,
even when they venture out as tourists. The studio contributes to the building up of an archive of studies that the school
taps into regularly for providing the basis for further research and design intervention. A study tour is conducted every year
to expose the students to such unfamiliar urban and rural contexts so that they can expand their imaginations and get
familiarized with the realities of India.
BIKANER, RAJASTHAN
The objectives of the first year measured drawing exercise which is presently placed at the beginning of the second
semester are multi-fold. It should ideally span across the three main studios, i.e. Architectural Design, Drawing and
Communication as well as Building Construction with each studio focusing on the various aspects of documentation and
analysis of buildings, architectural forms and representation of the built form through graphical techniques. As a general
guideline, historic buildings are selected for study or traditional typologies, in order to familiarize students with issues of
local and vernacular architecture, as well as introducing them to construction technologies which they may not have come
across. The process included documentation of havelis in Bikaner and compilation of the study in the form of a report
including the macro level understanding of the town, the historical, physical and cultural characteristic of the havelis and
a comprehensive set of drawings of these. Students learnt to work independently on a problem on site and discover
innovative means to document a building, not just through tape measuring but also through photographs, sketches and
understanding geometric proportion systems. They developed on-site understanding into two dimensional representations
through the standard drawing formats and were able to document not just what they saw, but also what they couldn’t see
because of site constraints. They understood building systems in Bikaner and Jaisalmer and regional differences between
the two, along with learning skills of drawing and representation and working in groups. The study helped the students
understand the space making process in a haveli, response to harsh climates, volumetric proportions and historic building
styles, how ornamentation may have a practical function and stone masonry.
MAHESHWAR, MADHYA PRADESH
The objectives of the second year study trip were
to engage the students in the documentation of
physical and cultural aspects of a typical historic
settlement that has strong cultural components
such as social hierarchy and traditional crafts that
reflect in the settlement pattern and built form.
The study of socio-cultural factors was extremely
important as the students were to select a site,
develop a programme as per their analysis of the
contextual requirements and design a building
based on these. Documentation and analysis
of the fortified settlement in Maheshwar and the
areas that form an interface between the core
and the newly expanding areas, helped them
understand the morphology and transformations
due to economic and cultural factors. The study
was compiled in the form of a report including the
macro level understanding of the town, along with
the historical, physical and cultural characteristics
of the settlement. The students designed a building
as per programme developed by them individually
that varied from singular to mixed use such as
residences, workshops, community centre, school,
interpretation centre, museum, exhibition space,
retail, restaurant, ashram, dharamshala, women’s
empowerment centre etc.
The Founders Day
‘One perhaps looks back in order to have a clearer view of what is yet to come. Hopefully, all our dreams for the future too
will be much more than a mere match.’ – Mr. M M Rana
September 1st, the birthday of Mr. M M Rana, is celebrated as the Founders Day. Keeping the tradition alive, the students
of Sushant School of Art and Architecture had all come together to celebrate Sir’s 94th birthday on September 1, 2012,
in great festive spirit and ethnic wear! With the unfortunate demise of Mr. Rana, in less than a month of the celebration, it
turned out to be the last Founders Day celebrated with him, a memorable and unforgettable event!
Established in 1989 by Chiranjeev Charitable Trust and founded by late Mr. M M Rana, the school has built its reputation
as one of the top three architectural schools in the Indian subcontinent, because of the efforts of the great visionary who
made the journey full of milestones and progresses.
The day began with welcoming Mr. Rana, followed by the lamp lighting ceremony and the Saraswati Vandana. Mr.
Rana came up to the podium and addressed all, beginning with, ‘I am really happy to see that all my students are as
comfortable sitting on the floor as they are on a chair in an air-conditioned room. That is the spirit of Sushant. That is what
sets us apart!’ A series of stories, incidents and facts followed, about what it was like to be an architect, the possibilities
and the difficulties, the world outside, our responsibilities and much more. It was great to see Sir, old in age but still young
in spirit, and that sure is an inspiration for all the students.
An innovative birthday gift from the young students of architecture was a handmade calendar with all the memories
captured since the inception of the School, a portrait of Sir himself, a painting and a movie with interviews of the students
whom he had taught and the people who knew him since the establishment of the School. But the best part was the
‘curtain raiser’, when the students unveiled the wall dedicated to Sir, a portrait of him and got it autographed by him. And
that will remain forever in the physical memory of this college.
Alumni speeches, cake cutting, lunch and snacks and a lot of fun just enlivened the day.
Cheers to the Spirit of Sushant!!
PLATFORM Lecture Series AT
SSAA
Platform Lecture Series (PLS) at SSAA is a new and an innovative lecture
series that encourages students to experience and interact with realms of art,
architecture and beyond, leading to a gateway of emerging technologies in
the field. The topics range from basic art, scientific subordinate, community
development, investigative techniques, design and urban design that provide
the foundation for practice-based research in the architecture programme. The
Lecture Series features an industry guest speaker at the decision making level,
discussing challenges related to a real world implementation with the young
minds eager to explore their potentials. The event is a yearly series of guest
speakers, sharing conceptual ideas as well as practical aspects. SLS is held at
the beginning of every academic year so that the students get acquainted with
the knowledge and take insights in order to orient themselves in their research.
PLS at SSAA 2012 saw eminent architects of our country come down to talk
to the students. Prof. A G K Menon and Ar. Kshitij Rana along with our faculty
Dristi Neog, Ryan Sequeria and Manas Murthy were a part of the brain
storming Panel Discussion on ‘Gurgaon 2025: Resolutions in Infrastructure,
Housing and Transportation’, aiming to discuss the trends of development in
the city and in order to find out probable reformations needed to redefine the
city. The final outcome of the discussion led to one conclusion that there is a
potential to incorporate all the different complex parameters but retrofitting the
development will make it very robust and simple to use and have more people
oriented cities.
Architect Pradeep Sachdeva, Principal Architect at Pradeep Sachdeva Design
Associates, a studio that has been a pioneer in establishing bench marks for
innovative projects, talked to the first and second year students about ‘The
relevance of Contextual Architecture’, showcasing some of his prestigious works.
CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT
Campus development undertaken as a part of the annual Festival ‘Atharva’ highlights the Sushant culture. During Atharva
2012, walls around the entire campus were redesigned and painted by the students of the School of Architecture and the
School of Design. Lighting modules were also designed and installed, with which the entire campus was beautifully lit up
during the three day festival. SSAA students created a colourful mosaic using broken ceramic tiles for the amphitheatre,
along with designing and construction of a structure on the second floor.
Faculty - SSaa
Teaching design requires insight and perception. It is a mentoring method that has been honed into a specific
Sushant tradition, one that goes well beyond the shibboleths that go under design pedagogy. Just as much
for their dedication and perseverance as for their proficiency in their field of study, the principal source and key
resource for us is our faculty.
Left to right: Manas Murthy, Vanicka Arora, Guneet Raj Singh,
Bodh Saraswat, Parul G Munjal, Amrita Madan, Shikha Duggal
Relating with Sushant as student and as
faculty
All our faculty members are licensed architects with affiliations and memberships to a number of professional
bodies, both national and international. All of them also have at least one specialization at the Masters level,
and more than one third of them hold a doctorate, well beyond the Council of Architecture norms. These
specializations range from such new fields as Tall Buildings, Digital Fabrication and Sustainability to traditional
ones such as Urbanism and History/Theory. In addition to this, almost three-fourth of them have an international
education from such premium institutes as MIT, Harvard, Princeton, UT Austin and Arlington, AA London,
University of Nottingham, and Universities in France, Germany and Australia. The experience of the faculty
ranges from 35 years of teaching experience to that with just five, facilitating the students to interact with a
diverse range of ideas that they bring with them.
Being from the last batch to have passed out of the old campus of Sushant on MG Road, the last memories of the School
for me remained to be those of the campus that we nostalgically relate to: the tall trees as focal points around which
the built form grew, the C-shaped seating near the library and lots of memories of the daily trip to the almost deserted
surroundings, the annual festival, working late in studios and growing with the school.
Returning to the new Sushant as faculty, the first and foremost aspect that brought back familiarity were the non teaching
staff members who have been a part of Sushant for more than a decade and a half and are still on board, though as part
of the bigger institution – Ansal University. Despite the campus and life on it being much different now; irrespective of the
change in role from student to faculty, the ownership that one feels towards the School remains unchanged. It is indeed a
pleasure to be here and contribute to the shaping of the institution further.
Through the Sushant Cell for Research and Consultancy, SSAA faculty members have also acted as
consultants for both government and private projects in the fields of infrastructure, urban design, urban and
regional planning and architecture design, across the country. In addition to this, especially this year, faculty has
presented more than 11 papers in national and international conferences and have had five articles accepted in
leading international journals of high impact value. This has also led to some travel abroad, especially to France
and Singapore.
Another unique strength of Sushant is the highly diverse panel of visiting faculty. There is barely any leading
design professional or academician who has not taught at SSAA at some point. The insight provided by the
visiting faculty is one of the key reasons that Sushant graduates walk out as ‘market ready’.
THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER SIR JAMES BEVAN
‘Today’s youth is immensely talented and gifted. They are young and unique people, who are a
delight, “the next big thing”, because the future is theirs. Revolution makes diplomats a bit nervous
and I am nervous about the Third Industrial Revolution. The point is not to understand the world but
change it. Considering how India and UK are good at design, this revolution isn’t an armed struggle,
but a change through design and creativity. It is dangerous wiring with great people, because if
you ask for different designs of a light bulb, they will throw you with a question of the necessity
of it being a light bulb in the first place. Design enriches, improves life, constructs order, entropy,
mediocrity, it induces excellence, induces functionality.’
The international conference on ‘How design practice and pedagogy will steer the Third Industrial Revolution’ gave a
platform for expression of national and international views on the role of design thinking and pedagogy in bringing about
changes. Can design innovations guide the way for a sustainable future? Should the solutions be global or local? How
does one address the challenges of context, crafts, identity? Should design be for the few or for the many? As a part
of the conference, eminent academicians as well as practitioners in the areas of design, architecture and environment
converged and reflected on these questions and the common concern for defining a way forward.
DEAN SSAA RUPINDER SINGH
‘A very distinct flavour of design in India is “jugaad”, a poor translation of which is the word
“improvisation”. India has carried it out through ages, as proven by the continuity of the Ambassador
car till date. The original design is British, but it is the Indian jugaad that has kept it going.’
DEAN SSD MIKE KNOWLES
‘What does design mean in common language? It is the emphatic view towards
problems and solving them in a creative manner. Design isn’t something that one can
package. It isn’t something that one can teach, it is a power that is pre-conceived
within our five feet nine inch body. The beauty of being able to think upon designs is
something that everybody possesses. However, the way you present it is totally based
on your personal experiences and sensory connections. Further, if designs are correctly
harnessed, they can enhance life, create jobs and spread joy.’
SUNITA KOHLI ON LUTYENS’ DELHI
Sunita Kohli is a research-based interior designer, a leader in historical architectural restoration
and a manufacturer of fine contemporary and classical furniture. She specializes in the design of
public buildings, hotels and resorts, luxury hotel boats, forts, palaces, heritage properties, aircrafts,
corporate offices and private residences.
In New Delhi, Sunita Kohli has restored and decorated many British period buildings designed by
Sir Edward Lutyens, Sir Herbert Baker and Sir Robert Tor Russell; notably Rashtrapati Bhawan, the
Prime Minister’s Office and Secretariat and Hyderabad House. She has also restored No. 3 and No.
5 Race course Road, the Official Residence of the Prime Minister, among several other bungalows
in the Lutyens Bungalow Zone. Presently, she is also working on the restoration, decoration and
modernization of the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Along with this, she has also interior designed the British
Council Building, the largest of their 80 institutions worldwide and done the interior architecture and
design of the DLF Corporate Office on Parliament Street.
In 1992, Sunita Kohli was conferred the Padma Shri by the President of India ‘for contribution to
national life by excellence in the field of Interior Design and Architectural Restoration’. That same
year she was presented the Mahila Shiromani Award, which recognizes women of achievement, by
Mother Teresa.
In 2005, Sunita Kohli founded the Museum of Women in the Arts, India ‘to honour women artists
of the past, promote the accomplishments of women artists of the present and assure the place of
women artists in the future’. This is associated with the ‘National Museum of Women in the Arts’, in
Washington DC, where she has also served on their National Advisory Board.
Addressing the youth at the conference ‘Revolution by design’ at Ansal University, she shared a lot
of insights on ‘Lutyens’ Delhi’ and while discussing the design features of the Rashtrapati Bhavan,
she shared that: ‘Sir Edwin Lutyens was a man who was greatly taken up by crafts and paid a lot
of emphasis to them. One of the most important features of the Imperial style and that Lutyens
designed was the Delhi Order. He did not use any of the pre-existing orders in the Rashtrapati
Bhavan. He designed a new column with bells on all four sides. These bells pleased the Hindu,
Buddhist, Jain sentiments and hence were greatly appreciated.’ Further she mentioned, ‘according
to Lutyens, architecture was about building with wit. Despite all his influences from various styles of
architecture, Lutyens had a rare originality of mind and genius.’
SIR CHRISTOPHER FRAYLING
Sir Christopher Frayling was until recently Rector of London’s Royal College of Art, the world’s
only entirely postgraduate university of art and design, and was also Chairman of the Arts Council
of England. He was Professor of Cultural History at the RCA from 1979 until last year, and is now
Professor Emeritus.
A historian, a critic and an award-winning broadcaster on network radio and television, Christopher
has published 17 books on art, design and modern culture - including most recently, Ken Adam:
The Art of Production Design, Once Upon a Time in Italy and Henry Cole and the Chamber of
Horrors.
His television series include: The Face of Tutankhamun, Strange Landscape and Nightmare – The
Birth of Horror; his radio series include America - the movie and Britannia - the film. Christopher has
also introduced several of Tony Nourmand’s previous books on the history of film posters.
Christopher was knighted in the year 2000 for ‘services to art and design education’.
Addressing the conference ‘Revolution by design’ at Ansal University Sir Frayling discussed some
of the issues that design faces today. According to him some of these issues were: user centric
design, design and its effect on society, inspiring good citizenship via design, designing for the
elderly, issues of employment in the field of design, issues of lack of frugal innovation and interlinking
the capital D of design to the small d of design. Sir went to state a possible solution for all the above
as the extremely well known phrase-THINK GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL.
Karen Richmond. Camberwell College of Art and Design UAL
Karen Richmond has a broad practice, which includes making things, curation, site specific works,
installations, participation projects and research projects. Karen is currently Course Director for the BA
hons in 3D Design at Camberwell College of Arts, (University of the Arts London). In 2000 she received
an MA in Design Products from the Royal College of Art. In 1996 she graduated from Kingston University
with a BA Hons in Sculpture. Karen currently lives and works in London.
While addressing the students and faculty of Ansal university at the conference ‘Revolution by design’,
Karen began her talk by questioning the etimology (epistemology) of objects in other terms, why
objects are the way they are? She further added the interconnection between the form of the object, its
functionality and the feeling evoked by the final product.
Ms. Richmond also explained, how the concept of small d and big D, as explained by Sir. Christopher
Frayling, is also apt for creativity in terms of small c and big C.
She ended on the note that one should not try to create and analyze at the same time.
M N ASHISH GANJU
Delhi based architect, M N Ashish Ganju’s work seems to spring from the self same concern for
the user. His approach believes in a user-friendly architecture first and foremost. He calls his style
of architecture - quiet, unassertive, and simple. For him form is not just shape. It means the way a
building shapes up and integrates with the user, slightly similar to the sense in which we say – ‘this
is or isn’t good form.’
He mentioned in his talk at the conference at Ansal University that his work with Dalai Lama made
him introspect on a lot of questions of the past – ‘What is it that can make people construct such
large structures with no training in this field what so ever? Is it the devotion? What is it that makes
this possible?’
He felt that the possibility of creating such complex structures all by hand is all to do with dedication
and devotion. He concluded that the way of the future is to train our own interior mindscape.
Keeping a warm heart and working out the challenges of everyday life which are disturbing, would
make us better designers in future.
OF DESIGN

SSD 59
The design industry is dynamic, surging and demands extreme passion. India
is witnessing an upsurge in design. From cars to buildings and almost every
usable item needs design. Lifestyle products sell as designer items.
Contemporary times are the times for design, innovation, creation and
groundbreaking concepts. A lot of changes have been witnessed in every
sphere globally. With population increase and urban explosion there is
a severe demand and need for designers to create infrastructure, which
provides solutions.
At the School of Design the students learn how to solve problems from the
day they start to study, how to create new things, how to untangle knots and
at the same time turn the results into something beautiful and artistic. I don’t
just mean objects, indeed good designers can conjure up from the depth of
their knowledge and passion amazing bags, shoes, bottle openers and just
about anything. Not only these, great designers tend to develop systems,
projects, offices, spaces, malls, supermarkets and homes full of warmth.
Designers are people who work in teams, are user focused and very positive.
Thus, at the School efforts are made to hone the soft skills of students. Our
students become naturally entrepreneurial and enterprising. Our pedagogy is
designed to train and develop superb designers.
Ph.D
BASIC PHILOSOPHY
The Bachelors in Design (B Des.) programme begins with a foundation year where the students are exposed to the
multi-faceted world of the designer and the diverse skills that need to be developed for pursuing a career in design.
The First Year (Foundation) programme is an introduction to concept development, technique, critical discussion and
expression. Students develop a set of basic design skills and are introduced to methods of application. The programme
trains students to evolve a distinct design approach and to develop a holistic attitude to the creative industries that they
will choose to inhabit as professionals. Students apply their training in creative thinking and making to various mediums
of expression and materials for construction, including textiles, ceramics, metal, wood, paper, canvas, board and natural
materials. Students undergo a continuous learning process that culminates in the creation of a final design project at the
end of four years. This project is expected to represent the acquired knowledge and skills of each student.
SALIENT FEATURES OF TEACHING PEDAGOGY
The Bachelors in Design (B Des.) programme allows the student to gain a foundation in design in the first year, and
thereafter to branch out into three learning streams – Interior Design, Visual Communication, Fashion & Textiles. The
delivery of content is achieved primarily in the studio format, supported by workshops, labs and lecture halls. The
curriculum ensures that the student gets a consistent exposure and practice in the broad areas of learning, namely
Design and Theory, Technology and Materials, Media and Technology, Discourse and Discovery, and Creative and Cultural
production.
SCHEME OF THE PROGRAMME
PROGRAmme STRUCTURE
BACHELOR OF DESIGN
The detailed programme structure of Foundation year and year two for Interior Design, as taught over the last year is
outlined as follows:
YEAR 1 - FOUNDATION
Design Principles - The focus is given to design from a visual perception, with respect to various 2D and 3D form
development capabilities according to their creative skills.
Studio Materials - Material exploration and handling of the same innovatively is the key to great ideas. Developing the
skill to do so is the purpose of this studio.
Drawing - The objective of the course is to develop the basic fundamentals of drawing based on direct observation.
The students are to develop hand and eye coordination, to make drawings more accurate. They are trained to ‘see’ rather
than simply ‘look’, in order to develop their observation skills.
History (Civilization & Technology) - The Course objective is to introduce students to global histories through objects.
The objects chosen (from the project of the British Museum) all tell a story about how their local area has interacted with
the wider world. It aims to encourage people to discover the power of objects.
Research & Documentation - Research is all about addressing an issue, asking and answering a question or solving
a problem, so the objective of this course is to introduce students to the ethical methods of exploration, conducting
research, collecting information, analyzing it and documenting it appropriately in the fields of Art and Design.
Portfolio Techniques - The development of visual problem-solving presentation assignments to enhance the students’
personal portfolios. Portfolio techniques would make the students realize the importance of presentation skills and how
different tools of design combine to create a portfolio.
YEARBOOK 2013

SSD 63
Culture, Cinema and Media - The main purpose of this course is to introduce students to global cultures through
cinema and media and make them sensitive to good cinema.
Drawing & Sketching - This course aims at developing visualization skills, and to help the students generate and
transform ideas on paper
Creative Practice - The course synthesizes training in all aspects of design and guides in the development of a design
which is created due to a need based analysis. The course enables to understand the complete design processes and
methods of delivering a design from concept to consumer.
Story boarding and ideation - The development of visual problem-solving presentation assignments to enhance the
students’ personal portfolios. Story boarding would make the students realize the importance of design thinking and
converting verbal language to visual language.
YEAR 2- INTERIOR DESIGN
Spatial Design - The objective of this course is to introduce students to the process of spatial design through looking
at functions and concepts related to the Personal and Dwelling. Students gain an understanding of how basic functions
relate to one another and how to develop ideas around these functions.
Graphics & Representation - This course is about developing skills in graphic communication. It involves combining and
organising the graphic elements of type with illustrative and photographic images, diagrams, signs and symbols.
Structures: Principles & Systems - The objective of this course is to introduce basic structural principles that are
employed in architecture and the design of buildings. The learning is intended to give Interior Design students knowledge
and understanding of structural systems, elements and materials that are appropriate for the work of an Interior Designer.
Colour I: Theory & Psychology - We are constantly surrounded by colour whether in nature where colour is present
in everything, the flowers, the trees, the sea etc. or human-produced colour in the form of dyes, paints etc., everywhere
about us there is colour. Colour means different things to different people and colours impact people differently.
Interior Services I: (Climate & Lighting) - The objective of this course is to introduce students to the field of lighting,
with technical knowledge in creating basic lighting schemes related to type of function.
Object & Furniture - The built environment we now inhabit is contracted from objects and forms ranging from the very
small to the very large. It is an interior designers role to ensure that all those objects are in harmony and correctly suit
the purpose in every sense. As our world becomes ever more populated, energy and space demands will intensify. This
course will have this PROBLEM at it’s core.
In all streams, through year three, the basics and extended knowledge developed in Foundation year and year two are
applied to push the boundaries further, producing the ‘expanded designer’. The final year or year four gives the student
the opportunity to round off the knowledge gained through final project and internship. This can be in practice in India or
abroad or in a one term course at one of the schools of the University of the Arts London.
Materials & Construction - The course is designed to familiarize students with the process and nomenclature of building
construction and the various structural components associated with it. In parallel it would teach system and standards of
creating construction drawings.
History of the Arts - As consumer goods, unique artworks and various forms of visual communication are central to the
modern world, studying their history and culture is one of the most stimulating and rewarding ways to understand our society.
Technical Drawing - The objective of the course is enable the student to understand and visualize the relationship between
3D and its representation in 2D. The skills imparted would act as tools to design thinking, visualization and representation.
PAINTING WORKSHOP
This year SSD ran into one of the most daring and rewarding projects about deconstructing an existing artwork. The
students were encouraged to study and deconstruct a well known painting from a famous painter. The work was
reviewed by internationally renowned artist Subodh Gupta, and design guru Ambrish Arora.
Ambrish said Design as a domain has the power to deeply affect our lives. If design as a profession is to have a
sustained and meaningful impact on Indian society, this will mean having to fundamentally question and raise the bar
on the manner in which design education is being imparted in the country. It is not just a need but also an imperative. He
appreciated SSD and commented that it is successfully raising the bar.
Conference Theme
We are all aware that human values exist alongside technology. Technological advances occur all around, whizzing
by, while human values change little and at a much slower pace. As scientific advances improve our lives, they also
complicate how we live and react to the new technologies. More and more human values come into conflict with scientific
advancement as we deal with important issues such as nuclear power, environmental degradation and information
technology. To fully cover this field and the vital issues that arise on an almost daily basis, we decided to bring together
participants from all over the country and abroad from physical and social science domains to achieve sharing of new
ideas and approaches towards this objective of gaining new insights and ideas on the convergence of human values and
technology.
ICECHVT 2013 offered the best keynotes featuring technical paper presentations and demonstrations. We received
an overwhelming response for presentation of papers at the Conference. These papers were evaluated on the basis of
their significance, novelty, and technical quality. Of the various papers submitted, 54 were selected as regular papers
FACULTY ACHIEVEMENTS
Alok K Kushwaha
The purpose of engineering education is to develop a logical thinking process in a student to be able to analytically
evaluate every aspect of a task. This purpose is achieved by our faculty at SET, who enable students to learn the
application of engineering in creating the technologies they use in everyday life. They impart the best pedagogical
practices towards improving learning and also make recommendations for research aimed at enhancing what
they have learnt. SET has reform-oriented educationists grounded in enquiry, reflection, problem-solving and
experimentation, who involve the students in active, in-depth activities and focus on improving both content and
teaching techniques.
The faculty of Engineering has a clear focus on teaching and training in various areas based on a convergence
of theoretical knowledge, its application in industry and problem solving through live projects, simulation and
modelling. A special emphasis is laid on providing a hands-on experience to the students through in-house
laboratories and floor shops in the industrial units. Most of the faculty members have doctoral and postgraduate
degrees from renowned institutes like IITs & NITs and have published their work in top-notch international journals
like ‘International Journal of Computational Intelligence Techniques’, ‘International Journal of Semiconductor
Technology & Science’ and ‘Microwave and Optical Technology Letters’.
SET has meaningful collaborations with several government and private sector agencies such as Appin
Technologies, Automotive Skill Development Council and Sofcon India Ltd. for providing in-house training
programme to students, faculty as well as industry professionals. The faculty members of SET are committed to
develop the 21st century technical workforce by offering a well balanced education in a supportive environment.
The School faculty has an opportunity to engage in research activities related to automobile, information security,
non-conventional energy etc. through the Ainstein Center, a result of collaboration between Ansal University
and Steinberg University, Germany. By offering a hands-on learning experience through practicals, industrial
orientations, effective mentoring, application of latest technological tools and softwares, the faculty constantly
endeavours to provide an industry ready workforce.
MANAGEMENT: CAPACITY BUILDING FOR
ADDRESSING REAL LIFE CHALLENGES
The world of work is full of complexities and challenges. Business and industry thrive on identifying
opportunities, managing change, dealing with conflicts and solving real life problems. Management
education equips us with the requisite knowledge and skill sets and builds up our capacity in
addressing these challenges.
The School of Management Studies (SMS) at Ansal University strives to achieve excellence in management education through
imaginatively designed curricula for both under-graduate and post-graduate programmes. Not only do we offer the typical
streams such as marketing, finance, HR and International Business, we also enable our students to develop management
expertise in the emerging sectors of economy by providing sector-specific courses. The philosophy of trans-disciplinary
learning of Ansal University perfectly blends with this multi-dimensional learning approach offered by the School. The
underlying objective of the content and pedagogy followed in our programmes is to develop employability skills and a mindset
oriented towards life-long learning among our students.
It is no longer enough for students building up their career to bank upon academic courses which provide them with
conceptual learning in various streams of management. The students need to build up professional competence as well in the
fields of their choice through additional options that are valued by the industry. The School provides such options by offering
certification courses such as Certified Financial Planning certification of the Financial Planning Standards Board, India. We
recognize the prestige and aura associated with global linkages in the academic programmes of the School, and towards that
end, we offer our students the option of pursuing additional post-graduate degrees from our partner universities abroad. This
gives the students a dual advantage in building their career path.
The excellence of an institute depends upon the excellence of faculty and their ability to build win-win relationships with
the external community. We believe in continual interactions with the employers, contemporary academic institutes in India
and abroad, fellow professionals and the community at large by reaching them out through conferences, publications and
collaborative programmes. Our faculty members consciously build up their identity capital by enhancing their academic
and professional visibility to the outside world through research and publications in the form of books, journal papers and
conference papers. Many of our faculty members have won laurels and acclaims for their achievements.
HIGHLIGHTS OF 2012-2013
A MOMENT OF PRIDE
A group of SMS faculty attended a Global Business Workshop at Indian Institute of Management (Lucknow) NOIDA campus
as ambassadors of the newborn Ansal University on May 19-20, 2012. While the then-Director attended on day one, a
group of nine faculty members from the School of Management of AU participated on day two.
World-renowned faculty from Kelley School of Business, Indiana University, US, conducted the Workshop. The IUAA Delhi
India Chapter in conjunction with Kelley School of Business (KSB) facilitated the entire two-day programme. SMS faculty
Sangeeta Trehan is the founding President of the Chapter.
There was a glorious moment for AU when Sangeeta Trehan was honoured as the “distinguished alumna and Chapter
leader” by the visiting delegation from Indiana University Kelley School of Business (KSB) at the conclusion of the
Workshop on Global Business on Sunday, May 20, 2012. Prof. Rameshan (Director, IIM-Rohtak) was the guest of honour
on day one while Prof. M Akbar from IIM-L represented the IIM Faculty on day two. A host of IU alumni and their friends
from all over India attended as participants.
ORIENTATION PROGRAMME
Lao Tzu has so rightly said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. The first session at Ansal University
began with an elaborate and meticulously planned, three-day Orientation Programme to help its first batch transition
smoothly from a high school student to a college student. For the Undergraduate courses, the session was conducted
from August 6 - 8, 2012. On a similar pattern, the Orientation Programme was conducted for MBA and other AU
programmes later in the month. The programme was aimed at settling the newest batch of students and tackling their
apprehensions (if any). The entire Ansal University fraternity joined hands to communicate one message across the board
that the students were going to be in safe hands during the course of their stay here. A ceremonial havan was organized
to seek blessings for the Institution and the students. Honorable Vice-Chancellor addressed the students and also
showered his blessings on them. During these three days the students were given an insight into their course curriculum,
annual co-curricular activities, anti-ragging and disciplinary guidelines. A session on mentoring was also given wherein
the concept of faculty as mentors was introduced. As part of psychometric profiling, the students were familiarized
with transactional analysis and the Levensons’ Test of Locus of Control, which was a hit with the students. They were
quite excited to interpret their personalities. A session was also planned for their goal setting and career opportunities,
to help students identify the path they need to take for themselves and the preparation required to capitalize on the job
prospects. Talent Hunt brought in an element of fun and frolic amongst the youngsters, wherein there was dance, music
and a wave of enjoyment. Students were given a platform to shed their inhibitions and showcase their talent, the first step
of the University towards creating an all-round personality. A Panel Discussion was also scheduled wherein prominent
industry professionals were invited. We had Mr. Dheeraj Dogra (National Director – Retail, BNP Paribas), Mr. Daman Soni
(Co-founder, Adchakra), Mr. Rohit Aggarwal (Regional Manager – North, Firstnaukri.com), Ms. Usha Mehta (Manager-
Recruitment, Steria (India) Ltd.) who shared their views on the topic: Industry Expectations from the students. Welcoming
the students with open arms, giving a peak into the University life and helping them feel a part of AU, this session set the
ball rolling for the session ahead.
Just out of school, with expectations galore; college life brings in excitement and more.
‘CONFLUENCE 2012’
Ansal University was the zonal center for the two-day Entrepreneurship Workshop, Idea to Execution conducted by
Nurture Talent Academy in association with Confluence - International Business Summit of IIM Ahmedabad, where
students got a chance to learn how to generate ideas, make business plans, start a venture, manage finance and
launch their products in market. Held on September 28-29 2012, the workshop gave participating students a real
experience on entrepreneurship through practical, live and a very interactive workshop. The shortlisted students would
get an opportunity to participate in the Grand Finale of Masterplan Business Plan Contest to be held at IIM Ahmedabad
from November 30 – December 2, 2012. This initiative is in line with AU’s vision to have a significant impact on the
entrepreneurship eco-system in India and to further the spirit of entrepreneurship among students.
Mr. Raja Natesan, Chief Operating Officer (TUI India) and Mr. Vijay Rai, President and CEO (Powercon) shared their views
on innovations and sustainability. The Chief Guest also officially launched Trans-Disciplinary Learning or TDL during the
Inaugural Session. While counterparts in other Institutions are still struggling with the comprehension of the concept, Ansal
University is one of the pioneers in implementing TDL. Through an integration of disciplines, learning becomes relevant
to the real world thus leading to the holistic development of students. While technical sessions were spread across both
the days, a Panel Discussion was scheduled where the invited guests shared their pearls of wisdom around the theme
of innovation, ethics and business. The Distinguished Panelists in the Panel Discussion included Mr. Sachin Sethi, Sr.
Director (Deloitte Consulting); Mr. Niraj Prakash, Director (Oracle); Mr. Amitabh Srivastava, Director Technology (Impetus
Technologies); Mr. Puneet Mansukhani, Business Head (Infodart), Cdr MM Chaturvedi (Retd. Indian Air Force officer)
and Prof. AK Saini, Professor – Management (IP University). The technological innovations in industry particularly mobile
space, focus on greening and sustainability were the key points deliberated upon. Overall, the two-day Conference was
an amalgamation of research paper deliberations and expert deliberations on the current innovations, business ethics and
sustainability.
TRANS-DISCIPLINARY LEARNING
Trans-disciplinary Learning or TDL integrates the perspectives of multiple disciplines in order to connect new knowledge
and deeper understanding to real life experiences. By inculcating the understanding of various disciplines to address the
problem at hand, students are able to connect to the subjects rather than studying them in strict isolation. This makes
learning relevant to real world. TDL leads to the students’ holistic development through an active, participatory approach
promoting critical thinking thus enhancing their employability and acceptability by the corporate houses. SMS students
are involved in a wide variety of TDL projects like Social Marketing to Young People: What works In Youth Development;
Himachal Tourism, Advertising and Society, Food Adulteration and Chemical Pollutants, Waste Paper Management @ AU.
Supply chain in Hotel Industry, Primary education to the poor, Public Health- An Integral Part of Undergraduate Learning,
Writing About A Sunrise School
Faculty - SMS
We have a diverse set of students at SMS - in addition to students from NCR we get students from Haryana, UP,
Uttarakhand, Punjab, HP, Rajasthan and a few students from the north-eastern states of India as well besides
students from some African countries. And the students themselves are different.
Why are they here? By all accounts, they appreciate the kind of education they receive. Ranging from small class
size to the accessibility of professors to the responsiveness of the entire administration to the overall educational
experience, students here have a wide range of opportunities not available elsewhere in our region. These
include, for example, the academic freedom that is essential to higher education, potential for collaborative work
with faculty mentors for their professional and personal development, ability to participate in trans-disciplinary
projects in various skill areas and community service and availing a world-class physical and sports infrastructure
on campus. In short, SMS, nay AU, is becoming known for having a lively college atmosphere — in addition to
tremendous educational opportunities.
2012-2013 was an exciting time on our campus, as we played host to a plethora of activity. Writing an account
of the same reminds us just how much the student experience at AU has evolved in a short span of time. It also
calls to mind the many reasons why this is a great place to go to college. There’s a synergy of ideas and resources
like never before. We are proud of the progress we have made in our relationships with students, faculty here and
elsewhere, staff, community and business leaders.
Looking forward, it is no secret that we aspire to expand further and become home to more and more students. It
is a goal that guides us in our long-term planning to design and offer meaningful programmes, forge new alliances,
expand capacity, re-engineer workflows and upgrade facilities.
These highlights are just the beginning. With more bridges, paths, and ties to the student community than ever
before, we are not just shaping the footprint of our campus. Indeed, we at AU are helping to shape the future of
India. We look forward with great anticipation to the academic year ahead.
Sangeeta Trehan - Faculty
School of Management Studies
Collectively, the faculty of SMS represents a unique blend of youth, experience and commitment towards all the
values that a management faculty should stand for. These include excellence in teaching, aptitude for research and a
continual urge to update their knowledge through participation in academic conferences. The faculty members engage
themselves in institution building activities in a collective manner by organizing events in the campus in which international
academicians and participants from other prestigious business schools and management institutions of the country
participate. One such event was the international conference on “Global Competitiveness and Corporate Governance
Imperatives in Emerging Economies” organized by the School in February 2013.
Another highlight of the collective strength of SMS faculty is their compassion for and ability to relate with the students.
Their professional relationship with students extends beyond teaching them in the prescribed contact hours to mentoring
them and guiding them towards careers suited to them. The SMS faculty also easily relate with the philosophy of transdisciplinary
learning (TDL) owing to their multi-disciplinary orientation in management. This is seen by the fact that several
of the TDL projects pioneered by the SMS faculty have been appreciated in the social community to which these projects
were targeted. Besides, the faculty members aim to enlarge the learning perspective of their students by conducting
knowledge sessions on current themes, case analysis workshops, management club activities and other such themes.
In a short span of time, the faculty members of SMS have contributed to creating intellectual property for the university
and themselves. The School has brought out a volume of published papers culled out of the papers presented at the
International Conference held in February, 2013. The School has also regularly brought out “De Facto”, a thematic
quarterly newsletter. Three volumes focusing on the themes, (a) FDI in retail sector, (b) Corporate Social Responsibility and
(c) Knowledge Cities have been published that have had contributions from faculty and students as well as from industry
professionals and academicians from other business schools. Some of the faculty members have the proud distinction
of co-authoring books in their chosen management discipline and publishing research papers and articles in journals and
business magazines.
The SMS faculty members have yet another quality not usually seen in business schools- the sense of art and an aptitude
for theatre. The SMS faculty won acclaim by creating and enacting a play in the evening hours of the first day of the
international conference held in February 2013. Not only did this add some spice to the heavy intellectual activity during
the day time, it also revealed the multi-faceted personality of the faculty of SMS
A PAGE FROM SPITI DIARY
“My journey to Lahul and Spiti, my stay there, the people I met and the challenges I faced together are things that I would
cherish all my life...” says Apoorv Tiwari, a Gold Level Participant who is pursuing his IAYP award (The International Award
for the Young People).
For his residential project Apoorv went to Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, from June 9, 2012 to June 25, 2012. As part
of this project, Apoorv accompanied 23 other award participants from seven different countries of the world. In this
residential project all the award participants joined their hands in constructing a complete solar bath using the traditional
Tibetan technique and local construction material and thus making it totally eco-friendly. The completed Solar Bath was
inaugurated by the King of the Spiti Valley in a ceremony held at the monastery.
YEARBOOK 2013

SMS 117
During their stay at Spiti, all the participants lived in the monasteries with the monks and had a closer look at the Tibetan
life, culture and tradition in which they also enjoyed the local meals and cuisines (momos, yak milk), explored local flora
and fauna and were amazed to witness one of the most ancient monasteries and its architecture.
Besides his residential project, Apoorv also completed his adventurous journey which is another section of the Award.
He did mountain climbing and trekking for almost three days and finally reached to witness the pristine beauty of snowcapped
mountain at Bhalari, the highest mountain top. While on his way to this final destination he also confronted a land
slide, an incident which left an abiding impression on his mind.
To sum up Apoorv strongly believes in what Helen Keller says that “Life is an adventurous journey or nothing”. And his
stay at Spiti has one of the most memorable and learning experiences of his life.
SEVEN WONDERS/WHIZ KIDS OF IAYP@AU
Avi Bhargava, Priyanka Kumari, Chitra Sharma, Harish Vats, Charika Gandhi, Shikha and Nandini Vij completed their
Bronze level of the IAYP Award. As award participants, they consistently worked in the four sections of the Award, i.e.
Service, Skill, Adventurous Journey and Physical Recreation. All these awardees unanimously believe that the award
has enthused in them a new zeal to look at the things from a different angle and perspective and now they all believe
in confronting new challenges everyday as the tag line of the award also says “Challenging Young People Everywhere”.
Through the award, the awardees have honed their leadership skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills; creative
thinking, problem solving and all of them now see themselves as better team players.
The award has been a journey not a destination which has helped all the participants in exploring their self. Thus all the
awardees believe in what Aldous Huxley says, “There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving,
and that’s your own self.”
developed, deployed and assessed; evaluating their achievement (based on a range of evidence such as summative and formative
teacher, self- and peer assessment, course quality indicators; stakeholder perceptions of graduate performance) and benchmarking,
planning and monitoring enhancements. The intensive discussions was done during the interactive session of the workshop on
designing course-learning outcomes with employability-related generic capabilities, articulate standards in those course learning
outcomes, and design how they will be evidenced by graduates. It was also discussed that we must scope opportunities for workintegrated
learning within and beyond the formal classroom and also we should deploy portfolio approaches to self, peer and teacher
How Stories
Can Save Us
Professor John Ruff, Valparaiso University
The America fiction writer Tim O’Brien, in the last story of his brilliant collection of interconnected stories about a platoon
of American foot soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War, The Things They Carried, claims “stories can save us.” Not our
bodies, O’Brien contends, but our souls. And I think he’s right in a number of ways. Here’s such a story. Once upon
a time a young man named Henry David Thoreau built himself a cottage at the edge of a pond, on land a mile or so out
of Concord, Massachusetts that belonged to his mentor, Ralph Waldo Emerson. With a borrowed axe, with lumber
salvaged from an Irish railroad worker’s shanty, with the volunteer labor of famous friends, including Emerson and Bronson
Alcott, Thoreau fashioned for himself a place to read and think. While the rest of country put its shoulder to the massive
undertaking of development and Western expansion, digging canals, putting in railroads, building factories and forges,
Thoreau read, thought, took walks, filled his notebooks with news about the weather and the wildlife, grew beans and
baked his bread. The most famous fruit of his labor there was Walden, a book to which we can trace the origins of
environmental thinking in America--it is where ecocriticism begins, and where we find one of the shrewdest critiques of
American capitalism and consumer culture yet written.
In his journals, we learn that nothing he reads moves Thoreau more than certain ancient Indian classics he probably
borrowed from Emerson’s library, The Upanishads, The Vedas, The Law of Manu, The Dharma Shastras, and most of all,
The Bhagavad Gita. To students of American literature and culture, it can come as a something of a revelation, for some
it might border on heresy, to read that one of the prime architects of American individualism, American as apple pie in his
anti-authoritarianism and freedom of mind and expression, an American original if there ever was one, was in certain ways
an intellectual knockoff made in India. But it is a true, and there is evidence to support that claim all through out Walden.
And why does that matter? Well, consider how it might affect the way we read the writer of Essay on Civil Disobedience,
which Thoreau wrote to explain his decision not to pay a poll tax that would support a government that would launch
an unjust war against Mexico and countenance slavery and protect the legal rights of slave holders. In whatever
history of non-violent resistance you read, that essay is a landmark even as Sophocles’ Antigone and Plato’s Apology
are landmarks. Scholars debate where and when exactly Mohandas Gandhi read Thoreau’s Essay, whether it was at
Oxford in 1900 or in South Africa in 1908, when he and others went to jail rather than pay a tax imposed unfairly on
people of color there. One scholar I consulted says Gandhi read (or reread) Thoreau’s account of his night in jail while
Gandhi himself was in jail. One wonders if Dr. King, in jail in Birmingham, Alabama, about to write his famous Letter
from Birmingham Jail in the margins of a newspaper, though of these famous precedents. Now there can be no doubt
Thoreau’s essay contributed to the formation of Gandhi’s practice of satyagraha, which Dr. Martin Luther King himself
would embrace and implement as a young leader of a bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama. King claims in “Pilgrimage
to Non-Violence,” a chapter from his book, The Montgomery Story, that it was Gandhi who taught him how to read
Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount as bodying forth a philosophy of nonviolence and love that could be applied by oppressed
peoples fighting for freedom and justice. Prior to reading Gandhi, King claims he took the gospel message of turning the
other cheek and forgiving one’s enemy as applying to individuals, not entire groups. That is a huge debt to acknowledge,
as a Christian preacher descended from generations of Christian preachers, for being instructed on the true meaning of
his own religious tradition by a Hindu leader, though I seem to recall Gandhi also acknowledging Thoreau on having a
similar impact on his relation to the Gita.
That Thoreau influenced Gandhi, King, and Nelson Mandela is beyond doubt, and the impact of that influence in human
history is inestimable. Behind that long story stands, imperturbed, Arjuna’s story in the Bhadavad Gita. So what is the
point of all this? American philosopher Martha Nussbaum, in a recent book entitled Not For Profit: Why Democracy
Needs the Humanities, makes the argument that education without the humanities will leave us ill-prepared to create a
habitable future that is just and wisely governed; that the study of history, philosophy, and literature create such
intellectual virtues as curiosity, integrity, and self-scrutiny, habits of the mind and also habits of the heart, especially
empathy, without which a sense of community beyond the family cannot exist. For Nussbaum, Democracy cannot
exist without an educated electorate, and being educated for life means more than being trained for an occupation, and
neglecting to acknowledge that endangers our development and the full flourishing of humanity and a just distribution of
the world’s bounty.
John Ruff has been in the teaching profession for 30 plus years. He has taught in the English department at Valparaiso University since
1989. He specializes in teaching first year students, literary modernism, poetry, children’s literature, and American literature. Besides
teaching in the English department, Professor Ruff is director of Valpo’s CORE programme for freshmen- He helped develop and since
1998 has directed and taught in their first year core class, a year-long interdisciplinary humanities course that all first year students in their
general education programme take there. He says “putting together CORE was the most exciting thing I’ve done in my academic career.”
This inter-disciplinary first year core programme is the cornerstone of their general education programme and constitutes about a third of
the credits required for graduation for most students, no matter what their major.
John Ruff was an Assistant Dean for five years, so he has worked a lot in academic advising. He also served on a University Task Force on
Writing at Valpo that helped to design a campus wide writing programme modeled after some of the best programmes in the United States.
Faculty - SHL
FACULTY ACHIEVEMENTS
Ashita Sharma
The faculty of School of Humanities and Languages (SHL) at Ansal University strives for holistic development of its
students by teaching a range of subjects from hard skills to soft skills in the fields of Economics, Psychology and English.
Keeping this vision in mind, the members of faculty who are well versed in their respective fields provide robust grounding
in the subjects under inquiry. Through their teaching, training and mentoring, they guide and nurture students so that
students unleash their potential in an environment which is very conducive to learning.
Insatiable thrust for knowledge is the hall mark of this school; therefore the members of SHL keep themselves abreast
with the latest developments in their field of study. The testimony of this is their regular participation and contribution in
national and international conferences, seminars, workshops, refresher courses, MDPs, FDPs, and training programmes
related to their respective fields. The learning from these wide range of academic activities is efficiently blended in critical
pedagogy used by SHL members in their effective classroom teaching.
The mark of rich academic blend is profoundly visible in the erudite profile of the members of SHL. While some of the
SHL members have been nominated as the editorial members of national and international journals of standing in the field
of Economics, the others have unveiled their knowledge pool through significant publication in the field of Psychology.
Through their incessant endeavours, the members of English faculty have devised soft skills course for all the University
students with the aim of not only preparing proficient professionals but also shaping global citizens for tomorrow.
These members of English faculty have also been associated and certified as trainers by the International Award for
Young People and through this award they try to equip, engage and empower the students by organizing events and
adventurous trips for the overall development of students.
In addition to the above activities, the members of SHL have many research articles, papers, and other scholarly
publications to their credit in journals of national and international repute. Besides these research assignments, the
members have been invited in delivering lectures on issues related to the corporate world and have also been actively
involved in giving corporate training and consultancy services to various organizations. This entire exposure of the SHL
faculty bridges the ever widening gap between academia and industry and its culmination takes place in enriching
research and innovative class room teaching.
