SSAA 19
First Year
The first year design studio gives an introduction to design, its meaning, relevance and impact on the society. All designs,
whether they are abstract or material, have a common basis that they always express a new idea. In order to design, one
must invent, create a new and original conception for the given problem and finally, develop and execute this invention.
The origin of design process lies in the creative thought that takes numerous factors into account. The studio enables the
students to understand these tools and begin the process of design thinking.
Introduction to the creative method through design principles and taking the mind of the student from the ‘known to
the unknown’ is a continuous process. The tangible outcome of the extensive studio assignments is, to corroborate
the perception of space. It exposes the students to the plethora of the space world. The students coming from the
traditional vertical system of education unlearn and relearn by focusing on ‘learning by doing’. The objective is to tackle
students from varied backgrounds to a highly focused training in analytical abilities, visualization, communication and
representational skills.
The syllabus of the first year provides a creative stimulus and a starting point towards visual design and basic elements in
design, that is points, lines, planes and solids along with their application. The creative exercises are designed with these
elements in conjunction with the design principles. The studio involves continuous research that prepares the student for
higher courses in the succeeding years.
