Architecture& Design Norway
A GLIMPSE OF NORWEGIAN
CREATIVE WONDERS
Architects and their buildings
Sykkelhtoell
Various Architects — No matter how small the project, this
Oslo-based Architecture firm aims to contribute to the local
environment. Explains partner Alexander Heien Berg: “In
addition to providing safe parking for 400 bicycles, the design
of Sykkelhtoell (Bicycle hotel) gives back to the city the area it
takes away by providing a public green rooftop.” The whole
building glows at night, creating a unique spot for anyone
to enjoy a moment amongst the green roof overlooking the
city´s skyline. As in many Norwegian designs, its minimalist
architectural style manages to convey a generous amount of
narrative.
Community Church Knarvik
Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter (RRA) — Independent Oslobased
architectural firm RRA has earned a reputation for
creating bold, simple architecture with a strong connection
to the Scandinavian context. The stunning church contrasts
with its dramatic spire yet at the same time quietly harmonises
with its landscape. Nestling in Hordaland, one of the wettest
regions in Europe, the church’s meticulous timber surfaces
of heartwood pine utilises a tradition in sustainable local
architecture that goes back to the vikings, who used the resin to
protect their buildings from the harsh elements. Its minimalist
design is inspired by the stave churches built during medieval
times, and today represents one of Norway’s most important
contributions to international architecture. Community
Church Knarvik was recently awarded GOLD in Institutional
Architecture by The American Architecture Prize 2016.
