Nottingham Children's Hospital's
'Big Appeal' goes to the movies
Nottingham Children’s Hospital will have top billing at city cinemas alongside Oscars contender La La Land, Star
Wars Rogue One and Trainspotting with the launch of a short animation film about the hospital’s Big Appeal.
Fundraising
by staff set to
top £100,000
The film, produced by Nottingham
Hospital’s Charity, tracks the hospital’s
Robin Hood mascot showing audiences
what the Children’s Hospital at QMC
does and how to help raise £3million to
enhance children’s services. Launching at
Nottingham’s Showcase Cinema on 24
February, the film promotes challenges
from skydiving to salsa dancing which
put the fun into fundraising.
The Big Appeal – launched
last November by Chief
Executive Peter Homa abseiling
down a 100-foot wall – will fund
much-needed parent and family
accommodation, state-of-the-art
X-ray and scanning equipment and
life-saving research into childhood
illnesses as well as complementary
therapy and improved play-spaces.
Hayden Whitehead plans to back the
Appeal by cycling 300 miles from
Nottingham to Edinburgh, inspired by
his son’ George’s illness. George, 4, was
diagnosed with leukaemia after collapsing
at playgroup last year. He immediately
needed blood and platelet transfusions
and is now on a three-year programme of
chemotherapy, weekly home visits from
community nurses and frequent visits to
the Children’s Hospital.
Hayden says: “Visiting Daycare Oncology
several times a week opened my eyes to
the fantastic work all the staff do. They
are there 24 hours a day, seven days a
week helping children as young as three
months old battling cancer and offering
kind words of support and encouragement
to parents.”
NUH staff have proved they are
not only committed to caring for
patients but are also on track to
raise £100,000 this year to enhance
services.
The efforts of nurses, therapists,
administrators, doctors, managers
and even senior clinical directors have
ensured NUH is well on the way to
meeting a challenge of raising £1,000
per ward.
The Hospital’s ‘Challenge 1000’ target
of raising £100,000 by 31 March has
sparked a brilliant range of fundraising
ideas – from the Breast Institute’s Think
Pink day which brought in £3,000, to
the Radiotherapy team raising £5,000
by entering a team in the Robin Hood
Marathon, and Hayward House, last
year’s Challenge winners, raising over
£2,000 at their Christmas Fayre.
Money raised will fund specialist
medical equipment, staff development,
life-saving medical research and
improved spaces for patients and
families.
Naomi Walters, our Senior Community
Fundraiser, says: “Hospital staff have
yet again blown us away with their
fundraising efforts. Everyone has
worked incredibly hard towards the
toughest target yet, and collectively
have already beaten last year's total.”
