An exciting year to come
This year, we’ve started our
programme of events for Members
with two milestone topics from the
past and for the future.
To mark QMC 40, we delved into a
Potted History of QMC presented by
Paul Swift, Honorary Archivist for our
hospitals. Look out for many more
celebratory events coming up to mark
QMC’s 40th birthday this
year. In the meantime
if you have memories
of working at or
visiting QMC from
1977 you’d like to
share, then please
get in touch.
Volunteer for
Readers' Panel
Do you have an eye for detail and
a good understanding of how
to communicate to patients and
carers in writing?
The NUH Readers' Panel are a group
of members who have volunteered to
receive draft copies of the information
leaflets NUH publishes for patients
and carers, to read them and help
make sure they are clear and easy to
understand for all readers.
The Readers' Panel helps NUH to
produce high quality leaflets, and is a
vital part of our work in retaining the
NHS England Information Standard for
patient information.
Panel members typically receive
around one or two leaflets per month
(either by post or email) to read and
submit their comments back to the
patient information office – there are
no other commitments.
The Readers' Panel is always looking
for new members of all ages and
backgrounds. If you are interested in
joining, or would like to find out more,
please contact the patient information
office: patientinformation@nuh.nhs.uk
or call 0115 924 9924 ext. 67184.
March for men
Prostate cancer is the most
common cancer amongst men.
Over 47,000 men are diagnosed with
prostate cancer every year – that's 130
men every day. 1 in 8 men will get
prostate cancer in their lifetime. Over
330,000 men are living with and after
prostate cancer. The month of March
is Prostate Cancer Awareness month.
To help raise awareness and also to
check your own health visit:
March 8 – the day for quitters
Just under 1 in 5 (19%) of adults
in the UK smoke – over 9 million
adult smokers. But smoking rates
have more than halved since 1974.
Surveys show that about two-thirds
of current smokers would like to stop
smoking. If you have been thinking
about giving up smoking, then March
8 could be the day for you. It’s No
Smoking Day and all the help you may
need to help you give up will be even
easier to find.
