REGIONAL – Thanks to his
friendship with Brockett Parsons
from college, Charles Johnson’s
first client for their curved
keyboard was none other than
Lady Gaga.
Johnson, Parsons, Richard Sell
and David Starkey built the first
circular keyboard almost five years
ago. It weighed 1,000 pounds
and took five men to assemble
it. But that did not stop them
transporting it from the North
Shore to Seoul, South Korea to
join Lady Gaga’s concert tour.
Fast forward to Super Bowl
Sunday LI in Houston, TX, where
not only the New England Patriots
played the greatest championship
game in NFL history, but Lady
Gaga gave an eye-popping
performance, complete with a dive
from the stadium roof, hundreds
of drones and a 288-key, circular
keyboard.
AMESBURY – Walking around the collection
of buildings that once housed ARC Technologies is
a bit like visiting a museum or giant consignment
shop.
At every turn in the warren-like old brick mill
buildings that was used to produce advanced
materials for commercial and military uses, one
now finds a variety
of companies making
often incongruous
products and services.
The companies
exist, even thrive side
by side.
and a lot of Yankee
entrepreneurship.
In a cavernous
first floor of one
building are several
companies – one making new building insulation,
another installing specialized metal roofs, still
another creating a device that produces electricity
to power the cabs of long-haul trucks overnight
without idling. There is even a full-length truck
chassis.
A recent addition is a company making
improvements to Jeeps.
In the center of the manufacturing space is a
glassed-in room that protects a new 3D printer,
Johnson, the CEO of Ipswichbased
PianoArc, knew the
Brockett360 would be in Houston
for the Super Bowl and would
be played by Parsons, now the
company’s chief executive artist.
“We didn’t know if the camera
would actually find it,” he said.
Not only did the cameras,
including those in the drones,
find the keyboard, “there were
some great closeups,” he said.
He had spent Saturday before
the game upgrading his computer
server, but to Johnson’s chagrin,
the server was not prepared for the
onslaught of inquires that came in
from around the world. At 8:30
p.m., as Lady Gaga’s performance
ended, the server crashed.
“Sorry,” he wrote to those who
were inconvenienced. It was one
Museum of Old Newbury
Kicks Off 2017 Programs
Newburyport, - On Thursday evening, February 16, the Museum
of Old Newbury will host author William F. Quigley for an illustrated
presentation and book signing of his recently published book Pure Heart:
The Faith of a Father and Son in the War for a More Perfect Union.
The program will be held in the Benjamin Lecture Hall at the Cushing
House, 98 High Street, Newburyport. A reception will be held at 6:30
p.m. with the presentation beginning at 7:00. The program is free and
open to the public and is funded, in part, by the Institution for Savings.
PURE HEART is the story of a father and son lauded in their day
as exceptional American heroes. Their patriotism and principled civility
amid fiery partisanship, racial bigotry, and civil war are lessons for our
own time. In the summer of 1862, William White Dorr enlisted as a
lieutenant in the 121st Pennsylvania Volunteers, a new Union regiment
organizing in Philadelphia. Dorr’s regiment took a pivotal stand at
Gettysburg and ten months later, as captain, Dorr led his company
into the Wilderness, one of the most brutal and bloody campaigns of
the war. On the home front, his father, the Reverend Benjamin Dorr,
rector of Christ Church, Philadelphia, strived to prevent divisions in his
congregation from sundering that Episcopal church historically tied to
the nation’s founding. The emotional heart of the story lies in Reverend
Dorr’s relationship with his soldier son, poignantly revealed in a recently
discovered collection of his son’s letters.
Although born in Philadelphia, Captain William White Dorr had
strong ancestral ties to Massachusetts, and he and his parents are buried
in Salisbury Point Burying Ground in Amesbury.
William F. Quigley teaches history at the Governor’s Academy in
Byfield, the nation’s oldest non-sectarian independent boarding school.
During his 25 years at the Academy, he has served as head of the history
department, dean of academics, and dean of faculty / assistant head of
school. Bill currently coaches two varsity teams and is founding director
of the Academy’s Writing Center.
PianoArc’s Brockett360 Stars in Super Bowl
Continued from page 1
Johnson said, “was an overnight
success” four years in the making.
“Way to go Brockett!” he wrote.
PianoArc is also a Massachusetts
North Shore success story. The
keyboard, which now weighs
less than 200 pounds and can
be assembled in an hour by one
person, is built in Essex by Atlantic
International Models with the
help of Lightspeed Manufacturing
in Haverhill and Merrimack Tool
Co. in Amesbury.
Johnson is shy about discussing
the price tag for one of his circular
keyboards, which he describes as
the “Ferrari of keyboards.”
The Brock360 looks like
something out of science fiction.
A wide red stripe encircles the
288 black-and-white wood keys,
surrounded by green, yellow, red
and blue LED lights. For the
Super Bowl, the team used only
white lights to make the keyboard
stand out in the dark.
Traditional keyboards have
fewer keys, a maximum of 88.
Humans can hear 120 different
notes, Johnson said. So musicians
use several keyboards to produce
different sounds at the same time.
PianoArc’s instrument is like
having three keyboards in one.
And Johnson believes the
evolution of the Brockett360 is
only beginning.
“We have not explored fully its
potential,” he said.
Johnson has been building,
as well as playing, keyboards
since he was 13, but he credits
Parsons with the idea of a circular
keyboard. Friends since he played
trumpet in Johnson’s band at
Bucknell, Parsons was playing
keyboard for Lady Gaga, when
he approached Johnson about
creating a keyboard that would
give him greater stage presence.
Guitarists, vocalists and
drummers exude presence
on stage, Johnson said, but
keyboardists “look like data entry
professionals.”
The team decided to try to
build a keyboard that gave greater
presence and new capabilities for
a showman like Parsons.
It took four months, but the
team built it just in time to load
the mammoth instrument onto
a truck headed for Korea. At that
time, Johnson, who had a strong
background in retail, wholesale
and software, was not thinking
about building exotic keyboards
as a business.
After receiving great reactions
to the keyboard from crowds in
30 countries during Lady Gaga’s
“Born This Way” tour in 2012
and “ArtPop” tour a year later,
Johnson knew he had a winning
product. But it needed work.
So during breaks in the tours,
Parsons, chief technical officer
Starkey and Johnson began
improving the instrument.
PianoArc debuted its latest
model at the National Association
of Music Merchants conference.
“Wow! Four days at the NAMM
show in Anaheim has given us a
sense of the possibilities for this
concept,” Johnson wrote at the
time. “Thank you to everyone who
stopped by, played, discussed, and
shared with us their visions for
this new generation of keyboard
products. We’re already back at
work planning the next phase of
production.”
As the keyboard evolved, the
accolades showered down on it.
Superstar musicians, including
David Rosenthal, Billy Joel’s
music director and renowned
keyboard programmer, stopped
by the NAMM convention to
give the PianoArc a whirl.
In 2015, PianoArc won the
Chestnut Innovation Center Becomes CI Works
innovation. They also wanted to
jettison the name Chestnut, for
the street the buildings were on,
because it carried no meaning.
“Chestnut is not a well known
street even in Amesbury,” Friery
said.
They also wanted to drop the
word, center, from the name
because “it sounds too academic,”
he said.
They replaced it with the word,
Works, to emphasize their mission
of creating jobs, particularly
manufacturing jobs.
The success CI Works is
enjoying in Amesbury has
caught the attention of the
state Executive Office for the
Department of Housing and
Economic Development. The
agency has asked O’Brien and
Friery and provided a $25,000
grant to expand its operations to
other Massachusetts towns and
cities.
CI Works plans to open a
second facility in the large,
now vacant Cape Cod Times
newspaper building in Barnstable.
In the future, it hopes to expand
to Lawrence.
Both Barnstable, the Cape’s
largest community, and Lawrence
are designated Patterns by the & Accessories state as
Gateway Cities, which qualifies
them for additional state grants
and financial aid.
In Barnstable, CI Works plans
to focus on the blue economy,
industries and businesses that
thrive on bring close to the
ocean. Like other vacation
locales, including Nantucket and
Martha’s Vineyard, Barnstable
is losing year-round residents
because many of its jobs are
seasonal.
One of CI Works’ first tenants
at the Barnstable facility will be
Cape Built, a vacation home
developer, which is designing
cottages that exceed the standards
set by the Federal Emergency
Management Administration for
hurricanes and rising tides by 20
years.
Friery said he expects the new
facility will attract companies
initially that are suppliers to Cape
SNOWY OWL PROWL
Wide-open coastal sites are the
location of choice for wintering Snowy
Owls; common perches are dunes
and salt hay staddles. In winters past,
the owls have been frequent visitors
to the Crane Wildlife Refuge. Join us
as we hike the dunes in search of these
magnificent birds. Unlike most owls,
snowy owls are diurnal—they hunt
and are active both day and night – so
we have a good chance of sighting one
even in the daylight hours! February
a second death, a determined Inspector grimly following the twists and turns, and
Miss Marple on hand to provide the final solution at some risk to herself in a dramatic
confrontation just before the final curtain. Tickets are $14.00. Seniors and Students
NEWBURYPORT - Officials at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge have

February 15 - 21, 2017 www.TheTownCommon.com Page
announced details about the third annual Conservation Film Festival, which will occur Friday evening, March 3rd thru Sunday
afternoon, March 5th. The free public event will take place at the refuge’s visitor center and headquarters complex in Newburyport.
A diverse selection of award-winning, conservation-related films from across the world will be presented on the big screen in the
visitor center auditorium. Films that will be screened during the festival focus on a broad range of local, national and international
conservation topics. Here’s a quick rundown of just some of the films that are on the schedule. The Million Dollar Duck is a
documentary that focuses on the strange and wonderful world of the Federal Duck Stamp Contest, the only juried, art competition
run by the U.S. government. Ribbon of Sand, narrated by Meryl Streep, profiles the famed Outer Banks of the Carolina coast – a
fragile environment not unlike the barrier beach on Plum Island. Return of the River follows a group of strong-minded, committed
people as they attempt the impossible: to change public opinion of a town, and eventually the nation, to bring a dam down. Sonic
Sea is about protecting life in our waters from the destructive effects of oceanic noise pollution. Shored Up is a documentary that
takes a look at how development of our coastlines has put us in a tough predicament, and shows why it’s time to start looking for
innovative solutions. Love Thy Nature, an award-winning film narrated by Liam Neeson, shows how deeply we’ve lost touch with
nature and takes viewers on a cinematic journey through the beauty and intimacy of our relationship with the natural world. Of
Ants and Men is a film about the life and extraordinary scientific odyssey of one of America’s greatest living thinkers, E.O. Wilson.
A number of “critter pictures,” providing rare windows into the fascinating lives of wild animals, are sprinkled across the festival
schedule. All film festival screenings are free and open to the public. Seating in the visitor center auditorium is limited and will be
filled on a first-come, first-served basis (with a capacity of 85). A complete film festival schedule is available on the refuge web site:
Is there a solution to the dental
insurance problem we have in
this country? I can tell you the
way I see it, different groups of
dentists may have different views,
large dental chains see it from a
different perspective, consumers
have varied opinions, and
insurance companies are leading
the way with their solution. These
are all very different perspectives.
Ask someone how they feel
about their medical insurance and
they might say that premiums are
too high, deductibles are too high,
they can’t go to who they want,
it’s tough to get appointments
sometimes (especially with
specialists), etc. Employers
looking to cut costs, obviously
tend to choose lower cost plans.
That usually increases deductibles
and may limit which providers
the employee is able to see.
Depending on your insurance,
you may have decreased benefits
or none at all, if you see a provider
outside of “your network”.
What does “in-network” vs.
Coffee, specifically the caffeine
in it, helps reduce the chronic
inflammation that occurs in our
bodies as we age, according to
a recent study out of Stanford
University. Chronic inflammation
can cause any number of problems,
such as cardiovascular issues,
Alzheimer’s disease, osteoarthritis
and cancer, according to more
than 1,000 research papers.
Chronic inflammation starts
with the breakdown of molecules
in the blood, called metabolites.
Coffee apparently has its own set
of metabolites that work against
Brighter Smiles...
The State of Dental Insurance in 2017 - Part 3
“out-of-network” mean? A long
time ago, if you had insurance,
you could go to anyone and use
your benefits. PPO’s and HMO’s
eventually formed and were able
to provide lower premiums by
contracting with providers who
agreed to a discounted fee for
their services - the “in-network”
providers. Providers who do not
sign that agreement are considered
“out-of-network” providers. Your
insurance company decides your
benefit level with both in and outof-network
providers. The goal
for the insurance company is to
pay out as little as possible.
This is the way dental insurance
is trending in this country. There
are fewer plans being offered that
will allow you to use your benefits
with providers outside of their
network. Why? It depends on
who you ask, but I believe the
primary reason is to control costs.
And that is understandable…if
you’re the insurance company.
If you were running a business
with a 70% overhead and a major
supplier of your revenue decided
they were going to pay you 30%
less, would you be able to run your
business the same way? Of course
not. You would need to do things
faster, do more of it, and control
your costs by investing less in the
business, using cheaper materials
and paying people less. There is
only one winner in this game. Of
course, you could not accept the
30% less, have fewer customers,
Senior Scene
those breakdown metabolites. But
again, it’s the caffeine that does it,
and researchers are confident that
there’s a link between caffeine
intake and living longer.
Not everyone has a problem
with inflammation, say the
researchers, and those who don’t
are generally people who drink
beverages containing caffeine.
For this study, researchers paired
a large group of participants ages
20 to 30 with a group that’s been
part of a long-term Stanford
study, those who are over 60 years
of age and have been monitored
and tested for 10 years. They
compared portions of the blood
in both group, and here is what
they found:
--In the high-inflammation
and run your business the way
you see in in the best interest of
your customers.
You can’t be very happy reading
this, as a business owner, employee,
and/or consumer. It is important
to advocate for yourself, especially
when it comes to your health.
I get asked just about daily
by patients who are either selfemployed
or are not offered
insurance through their employer,
“Should I consider getting dental
insurance?” In most cases, in my
opinion, it does not make sense
to purchase dental insurance on
your own – at least the way that
dental insurance currently works.
You should definitely talk to your
own dentist about that prior to
purchasing something.
What happens if your dentist
doesn’t take (or isn’t in network)
with your insurance anymore?
Should you stay? How do you
find a provider in your network if
you choose to leave? What other
things do you need to consider in
making a decision?
….to be continued
Dr. St. Clair maintains a private
dental practice in Rowley and
Newburyport dedicated to healthcentered
family dentistry. If there
see written about or questions you
Drink Coffee, Live Longer
group, more people had high
blood pressure, more free radicals
running around the blood stream,
and fewer relatives who’d live past
the age of 90.
--In the low-inflammation
group, they found an abundance
of the metabolites found in coffee,
tea and chocolate.
If you search online for sources
of caffeine, you’ll be surprised
at how many foods and drinks
contain at least some of it. Ask
your doctor how much caffeine
is appropriate for you. Some
prescription and over-the-counter
drugs contain caffeine, and it can
act as a diuretic and might have an
effect on bone density.
