A Word From The (Former) President
This and that, then and now
John Jacoby
Contributing Columnist
• President Barack
Obama, in the closing
days of his administration,
reappointed Wilmette
resident Sam Gordon
to a five-year term on
the Council of the U. S.
Holocaust Memorial. Sam
is the Rabbi of Congregation
Sukkat Shalom at
1001 Central Ave. He was
initially appointed in 2013
to fill an unexpired term.
The Council is the governing
board of the Holocaust
Memorial Museum in
Washington, D.C.
Sam emphasizes the
Museum’s educational
role. “The Museum goes
beyond just retelling the
unique history of the Holocaust,
but seeks to apply
the lessons of the Holocaust
to other instances of
potential genocide in our
own day,” he explained.
“The Holocaust was
unique in its attempt to
eradicate the Jewish people,
but it’s also a lesson
in how the unimaginable
is possible.” The lessons
of the Holocaust apply to
current events in the Mideast,
says Sam. “Seeing
