How We Met Contest
Love story of Glynns began on college campus
Eric DeGrechie, Editor
Meeting that someone
special is among the most
wonderful moments in our
lives. The story of how it
all began is one we enjoy
telling friends, family and
anyone who will listen.
Here at The Beacon,
we run a number of different
contests throughout
the year. Based on the
response we usually get,
it’s the right call as our
readers like to participate.
This year’s How We Met
contest, in its sixth year
of existence, was another
popular one. Picking a
winner, especially when
it comes to something as
subjective as a love story,
is difficult. We applaud all
of the entries and enjoyed
all of your stories.
In the end, we went with
the tale of college sweethearts
Michael and Jasclyn
Glynn, of Wilmette. For
the winning entry, the
Glynns will receive a $50
gift certificate from the
owners of The Noodle
Cafe (708 12th St., Wilmette)/Depot
Nuevo (1139
Wilmette Ave., Wilmette).
Thank you to Rob Garrison
for the generous prize.
Here is the story of the
Glynns:
Her Voice
by Michael Glynn
My wife Jasclyn and
I met in college at Chicago’s
Illinois Institute of
Technology (IIT). It was
January of 1980, I was
a third year undergraduate
studying architecture,
Jasclyn was in her second
year, an engineering/business
major.
On-campus living accommodations
for undergrads
were dormitories,
my room at the very end of
a lengthy hallway. Bland
walls of painted concrete
block, a white plaster ceiling,
and a floor of beigey
colored vinyl tiles defined
the hallway, making it
a perfect echo chamber.
Back then, most of my collegiate
architecture friends
shared similar short term
life plans; graduate, find
employment, enjoy single
life along the way, and
postpone thoughts of commitment
or marriage until
your thirties. Our “boys
club” had a pact and I was
“all in” until the evening I
heard her voice.
It was a Tuesday night
about an hour or so after
dinner while in my room,
the doorway wide open.
Quite unexpectedly, coming
from what seemed to
be the distant end of that
endless hallway I began
to faintly hear a voice —
one I had never heard before.
It was a joyous and
gentle melody, a sincere
Jasclyn and Michael Glynn, of Wilmette, met while
studying at Chicago’s Illinois Institute of Technology.
Photo submitted
and warm breeze on that
cold January night, and it
seemed to be heading my
way. Life was about to
change.
Just a few heartbeats
later I eased over toward
the open doorway, quietly
peaked down that hall
and learned “the voice”
belonged to a stunning
beauty with an incredible
smile. I was awestruck, so
much so that by the time
she reached my doorway
— the exact time I needed
to say hello or anything
for that matter, I couldn’t
even speak. In an instant,
she smiled, gracefully
passed by, and was gone.
After some composure
rediscovery instinct took
over and for a budding
young architect that meant
heading right to the drawing
table to work out a
PLAN. So, Jasclyn and I
managed to “accidentally”
meet formally the following
day. We talked forever
and soon agreed to rearranged
our elective course
and cafeteria schedules to
coincide. About a month
later, on Valentine’s Day
she kissed me for the first
time on the right cheek.
We have been inseparable
since.
Several Novembers later
we were married and 32
more have quickly passed.
Along the way two spectacular
boys joined us for
our ride and today we have
our own “boys club,” so
blessed to hear that lovely
voice every day and it always
makes us smile.
princesses and you can
see the fun and excitement
radiating from both
of them.”
In usual fashion, the
event was once again sold
out with 250 dads and
daughters who appreciated
a night to have a little fun
together, away from the
distractions at home.
Glenview’s Scott Marwick
and his daughter,
Lucy, have attended for
the past three years, enjoying
their night out on
the town.
“This is a special night
that we look forward too
each year,” Scott Marwick
said. “It is a night we can
leave the brothers and sisters
behind and enjoy a
night, just the two of us.”
This year, Thomas also
added a new twist to the
evening by incorporating
a few fun activity
worksheets for dads and
daughters to get to know
one another better. A pile
of glow necklaces also attracted
the girls, who wore
as many at one time, lighting
up the dance floor.
Thomas also gave
thanks to their wonderful
and gracious hosts.
“Michigan Shores once
again blew me away by
their excellent service and
beautiful venue. I cannot
thank them enough for the
opportunity to host our
dance here again,” Thomas
said.
After working up an appetite
on the dance floor,
dads and daughters took
an ice cream break and received
a professional photo
shoot, only to once again
let loose on the dance floor
just like Chris McLaughlin
and his 6-year-old
daughter, Grace.
“I learn all my moves
from Grace,” McLaughlin
said.
For Isabelle and Bob
Laude, the night was about
finding some quality time
to build memories.
“I love dancing and being
here with my dad.” Isabelle
Laude said.
“I love the nice night out
with my very special girl,”
Bob Laude said.
