T&T and Venezuela Sign MoU<br />
HEADLINE<br />
On 22nd May, 2016, following bilateral meetings in<br />
Jamaica, the President of the Bolivarian Republic<br />
of Venezuela, His Excellency Nicolás Maduro Moros<br />
visited Trinidad and Tobago.<br />
Up<strong>on</strong> his arrival, President Maduro was greeted by<br />
the Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Senator<br />
the H<strong>on</strong>ourable Dennis Moses; Minister of Energy and<br />
Energy Industries, the H<strong>on</strong>ourable Nicole Olivierre;<br />
and Venezuelan Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago,<br />
Her Excellency Coromoto Godoy Calder<strong>on</strong>.<br />
During his <strong>on</strong>e day working visit <strong>on</strong> May 23, the<br />
Venezuelan President met with the T&T President,<br />
His Excellency Anth<strong>on</strong>y Thomas Aquinas Carm<strong>on</strong>a,<br />
before heading to the Diplomatic Centre to hold<br />
bilateral talks with Prime Minister Dr. Keith C. Rowley<br />
and a T&T delegati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Enhancing bilateral co-operati<strong>on</strong> between Venezuela<br />
and Trinidad and Tobago in areas of energy, trade and<br />
foreign policy am<strong>on</strong>gst others was the focal point of<br />
the discussi<strong>on</strong>s throughout the visit.<br />
President Maduro visited the Trinidad and Tobago<br />
Diplomatic Centre with a diplomatic c<strong>on</strong>tingent<br />
including:<br />
• Minister of the People’s Power for Foreign Affairs,<br />
Her Excellency Delcy Rodriguez;<br />
• Minister of the People’s Power for Petroleum and<br />
Mining, His Excellency Eulogio Del Pino;<br />
• Minister of the People’s Power for Industry and<br />
Commerce, His Excellency Miguel Perez Abad;<br />
• Vice-Minister for Latin American and Caribbean<br />
Affairs, His Excellency Alexander Yánez Deleuze;<br />
• Ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of<br />
Venezuela in the Republic of Trinidad and<br />
Tobago, Her Excellency Coromoto Godoy<br />
Calder<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Coming out of the visit, Trinidad and Tobago and<br />
Venezuela signed a Memorandum of Understanding<br />
(MoU) regarding natural gas resources, which will<br />
enable the use of Venezuelan natural gas within<br />
Trinidad and Tobago.<br />
“These discussi<strong>on</strong>s and the MoU we signed with<br />
respect to energy, could see the m<strong>on</strong>etisati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

cross-border gas, Venezuelan gas, in Trinidad plants,<br />
and together, Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago can<br />
approach the internati<strong>on</strong>al market,” said Dr. Rowley.<br />
“For the first time, we have set specific deadlines<br />
for these activities. We are very pleased to hear that<br />
financing has been put in place to enable the crossborder<br />
trade in manufactured items,” Dr. Rowley<br />
stated.<br />
He also menti<strong>on</strong>ed, “We look forward in Trinidad and<br />
Tobago to providing some significant relief to the<br />
people of Venezuela.”<br />
President Maduro said that a US$50 milli<strong>on</strong> fund has<br />
been set up to facilitate trade and the transfer of<br />
Trinidad and Tobago manufactured goods over to<br />
Venezuela.<br />
He reiterated, “Through a roving fund with US$50<br />
milli<strong>on</strong> we will be able to strengthen the flow trade<br />
through Trinidad (and Tobago) and the Eastern part<br />
of Venezuela.”<br />
