Advanced Beg<strong>in</strong>ners French: This course<br />

will provide knowledge of more complex<br />

grammar (written and oral work); written<br />

and oral comprehension with the help of<br />

texts about daily life; conversations classes;<br />

communicative approach. The course will<br />

have a writ<strong>in</strong>g component that will require<br />

the use of simple letters and narratives to<br />

develop basic techniques for writ<strong>in</strong>g reports.<br />

Intermediate French: This is a more<br />

advanced <strong>study</strong> of grammar and syntax<br />

(written and oral work); written<br />

comprehension and expression us<strong>in</strong>g various<br />

types of documents (stylistic approach); the<br />

course will also have a civilization and<br />

contemporary literature component.<br />

Students will be evaluated on their oral<br />

expression skills—discussion of current<br />

events accord<strong>in</strong>g to subject matter, and<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g skills—simple writ<strong>in</strong>g and basic<br />

techniques of the written expression.<br />

Advanced French: This course will provide<br />

students with a mastery of French grammar<br />

and syntax; comprehension of texts and<br />

written work us<strong>in</strong>g difficult texts <strong>in</strong> different<br />

styles (literary, journalistic, economic, etc);<br />

the <strong>study</strong> of written expression techniques<br />

(commentaries, essays); and the <strong>in</strong>-depth<br />

<strong>study</strong> and practice of oral expression and<br />

communication techniques, e.g. speechmak<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> debates and<br />

defend<strong>in</strong>g an idea.<br />

Hous<strong>in</strong>g Options<br />

Students participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the IFALPES<br />

program have a variety of hous<strong>in</strong>g options to<br />

choose from. Students are matched with<br />

their ideal residence once they have been<br />

accepted <strong>in</strong>to the program and once they<br />

have provided IFALPES with the completed<br />

hous<strong>in</strong>g questionnaire.<br />

Hous<strong>in</strong>g arrangements are made by the<br />

Association for Student Hous<strong>in</strong>g<br />

(l’Association porle Logement des Etudiants<br />

ALE). ALE ensures lodg<strong>in</strong>g for all students<br />

enrolled at IFALPES. Students may live <strong>in</strong><br />

the town center or <strong>in</strong> the suburbs, and can<br />

choose from one of the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

Homestay/Host Family: There are a variety<br />

of host families of all ages and social<br />

backgrounds. Students are strongly<br />

encouraged to participate <strong>in</strong> homestays,<br />

which will allow for the students to practice<br />

their communication skills and to ga<strong>in</strong> a<br />

better understand<strong>in</strong>g of everyday life <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>France</strong>. This option provides students with<br />

half board (breakfast and d<strong>in</strong>ner) at 640<br />

EURO/month or bed and breakfast at 485<br />

EURO/month.*<br />

Shared Apartments: These apartments<br />

provide students with <strong>in</strong>dividual bedrooms<br />

and one shared bathroom. The apartments<br />

are furnished and beg<strong>in</strong> at 410 EURO/month<br />

per person for Chambery and 430<br />

EURO/month per person for Annecy.*<br />

Individual Studio/Apartments: These are<br />

located near or around the town center.<br />

They normally beg<strong>in</strong> at 400 EUROS/month<br />

for Chambery and 550 EUROS/month for<br />

Annecy.*<br />

Student Residences: These are rooms with<br />

shared liv<strong>in</strong>g areas available with<strong>in</strong> or near<br />

the <strong>in</strong>stitutes. They normally beg<strong>in</strong> at 380<br />

EUROS/month <strong>in</strong> Chambery and 350<br />

EUROS/month <strong>in</strong> Annecy.<br />

If a certa<strong>in</strong> type of accommodation is<br />

unavailable for your requested period, the<br />

accommodation service will send you an<br />

alternative accommodation as close as<br />

possible to your orig<strong>in</strong>al request.<br />

*A lodg<strong>in</strong>g book<strong>in</strong>g fee will be added to the<br />

student’s hous<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>voice. This fee will<br />

vary depend<strong>in</strong>g on the length of the<br />

student’s stay—40 EUROS if you are<br />

stay<strong>in</strong>g for one month and 70 EUROS if you<br />

are stay<strong>in</strong>g longer.<br />
