Final Graced by a Distinguished Bench of Judges
The Grand Final of the 2014 Annual Schools Youth Speech Competition organised by Renfrew
Speakers Club recently took place in the Normandy Hotel, Renfrew.
The panel of judges was made up of the Chief Judge Graham McLachlan, Immediate ASC Past
President, the current ASC President Margaret Robertson and Jeneffer Zielinski ASC Argyll &
Clyde Area President.
Six teams representing schools from Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Areas
schools took part, they being the winners and runners up from 21 school teams who had taken part
in the earlier ‘knock out’ competitions.
The students were given the choice of speaking on one of the following subjects:
With developments such as GPS, security cameras and mobile devices, it is often said that we live
in a ‘surveillance society’. Is modern technology becoming too invasive in our lives?
In an age of austerity at home, does the £11.5bn the UK is presently spending on overseas aid
represent value for money?
The UK used to pride itself in having an unarmed police force, but nowadays it seems that more
and more police officer are carrying arms. Is routine arming of police an inevitable consequence of
the threats face in modern society?
The winning team was Gryffe
High School from Renfrewshire
and they are shown in the
photograph proudly holding
the John Richardson Trophy,
accompanied our National
President Margaret Robertson
and by their teacher Jennifer
Higgins.
The runners up were St
Columba’s team No 1 from
Inverclyde and they are shown
in the photograph with their
teachers Anne Friel and Anne
Devlin.
As a permanent memento of
winning the John Richardson
Trophy last year St Stephen’s High School, Port Glasgow, were awarded an engraved glass roundel
trophy to add to their many Speech Competition Awards they have won over the years.
The Chief Judge Graham McLachlan commented on the quality of the speeches, gave constructive
evaluations as well as overall advice to the teams on how to improve their public speaking abilities.
The Chairman for the Final, Hunter Wilson of Renfrew Speakers Club, said that the standard of
public speaking continued to climb and the teams were a credit to their teachers, parents and
schools.
These schools speech competitions whilst contributing to the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence
aims which are to enable a young person to be a successful learner, a confident individual; a
responsible citizen and an effective contributor are completely in line with the Association of
Speakers Clubs motto ‘Achieve Speaking Confidence’.
