London to
Barcelona...
in 10 days!
kilmacolm
& quarriers
.....................................................
Thankfully I was able to attend some council and community
events/meetings in June following my recent discharge from
hospital. It was great to return to council duties, though, I
had been warned to ease my way back and so sadly I had to
curtail what I was able to attend. In June there are always a
number of school shows and events to attend and while I was
pleased that I was able to attend a few, sadly I had to miss
others. It is always a joy to attend school and community
events. Indeed I find it one of the most enjoyable parts of
being a councillor.
Recently I received another complaint about speeding
vehicles on Port Glasgow Road in Kilmacolm which I again
passed on to the police and the council roads services to look into. The 30mph
speed sign was recently put back up, though, one constituent has suggested
to me that there are alternative road signs which show the speed motorists are
driving at and are used very successfully elsewhere. I have asked the council
roads services to consider this proposal as this type of road sign could be more
effective in reducing speeding on Port Glasgow Road.
Sadly again, I received a complaint concerning some St Columba’s School
parents parking over residents driveways on Park Road. This is a matter that
has been raised with me before and which I highlighted in a previous edition
of the Advertizer. I would urge any parents who are parking their cars on Park
Road or indeed beside any school, not to park over residents driveways. I know
none of us would like this to happen to ourselves.
Last month I had the pleasure of attending an employability event at Greenock
cinema which was organised by the local organisation Reach for Autism. The
presentation at the cinema highlighted the extremely low percentage of people
with autism of working age who are in employment, less than 15%. A film was
screened at the event showing some of the barriers that people with autism
face in trying to secure employment and a number of disabled people spoke
of their own personal experiences of looking for work and several of being in
employment. It highlighted that more must be done to assist disabled people
into work by government, local authorities and employers.
Now that the schools have closed for the holidays I would like to wish everyone
a nice summer and hope that those of you who are managing to get away for a
week or two that you have a great break and for those staying closer to home
that we have warm and sunny weather.
My next surgeries in July will be advertised in the local press and on my surgery posters.
Local lass, Lorna Carson and 4
others are attempting to cycle
from London to Barcelona in
10 days.
This is a challenge of a lifetime,
covering a distance of over 1665km (1040 miles), averaging over 150km each
day on road bikes and taking in two of the toughest mountain stages of the Tour
de France, Mont Ventoux (1912 m) in the French Alps and the Col du Tourmalet
(2115m) in the Pyrenees.
Lorna told The Advertizer, “This is a monumentous challenge for me as up until
two years ago I was 16 stone and in the year following lost 6 1/2 stone through
healthy eating and training in the gym.”
Lorna completed the West Highland Way last year over 2 days on a mountain
bike, having not been on a bike since she was a child!
She continued, “In November last year I bought a road bike and committed to
taking part in this challenge, which up until a year ago would never have been
physically possible.”
“The charity I’m raising money for is
Yorkhill hospital as it is an extremely
worthy charity close to everyone’s
heart. We all know family, friends or loved ones
who have benefited from and rely on the wonderful work they do helping sick
children not only in Glasgow and the West but throughout Scotland.”
Council Leads the Way for
Recycle Week
Inverclyde Council is helping residents take up the recycling challenge as part
of this year’s Recycle Week campaign.
The Council will be holding information sessions where people can pick up
useful promotional items and learn about the many recycling options available
in Inverclyde.
Environment & Regeneration Convener Councillor Michael McCormick said:
“Inverclyde’s kerbside recycling service is widely acknowledged as one of the
best in the UK and we also offer an excellent range of facilities at our recycling
centres making it easy to support this year’s theme of ‘Recycling Around the
Home’.
Councillor McCormick dropped in to meet local mum-of-three Kirsty Madden
and her children Josh aged 11, Jamie aged 8 and 6 year old Karis who are all
enthusiastic recyclers.
Kirsty said:
“The children
enjoy learning
about recycling
at school and
are happy to
keep me right
regarding which
bins I should be
using.”
Councillor
McCormick
a d d e d :
“Traditionally
this is the time
of year when people start to think about doing some work around the home
and garden so it’s great to see Kirsty and the children making good use of
their recycling containers. I am hoping Recycle Week will encourage everyone
to recycle all their unwanted household materials.”
Recycling information sessions take place on Thursday 25 June at
Kilmacolm Library, Kilmacolm: 2.30pm to 4pm and on Friday 26
June at Port Glasgow Library, Port Glasgow: 10am to 12pm.
The Recycling Helpline Number is 01475 715901.
